Title: TJ Finley
Post by: Snaggletiger on May 17, 2021, 03:48:00 PM
Who?  Mrs. Finley's boy.  Finley is a QB at LSU and is entering the continuum transfunctioner thingy.  He played some against Auburn last year as a true freshman, but he wasn't very good.  Overall last year, he was a whole lot of meh.  But then, overall last year, LSU was a whole lot of suck.

He's 6'6" 242 with a rocket arm.  And he's talking openly about Co Harbinz and Co. trying to get him to Auburn.  He said they want him to come in and compete with Bo Nix for the starting job.  His response was that if he feels like he can beat Nix out, he's on his way.

Quite honestly, that's not very reassuring to me.  Certainly you'd never turn down a physical freak to come in and join the QB group.  And maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it sounds like they're not sold on Mr. Nix.  That may be a stretch on my part, but then again, he hasn't exactly been playing all-world foosballz so far.  I like to think that's a Gus thang, and not a Nix blows dealio.

So our room would be:

Nix
Finley
Davis
Sandberg
Loy
Garnett
Lindsey
Pate

Seems unnecessarily crowded unless the staff isn't impressed with stars-in-the-making like Sandberg and Loy.

Also, Snags will be happy to hear that the future of the LS position is safe with Jacob Quattlebaum sitting there at SO and learning from the upperclassmen.

Not that he was going to push for playing time, but Mr. Sandberg left the building.  I believe he landed at Eastern Kentucky.  And the LS thing....the essence of wetness.

I saw that this post was today and I wondered how you missed that Sandberg and Garnett are gone.

I'm clearly slacking on my duties.  I'll try harder.

So we lost a journeyman (good luck, sir) and a nobody frosh?

I also saw Pate on that list and thought I'm living under a rock. No idea.  Looked him up and it's Sawyer Pate.  Graduated from 7A Thompson High in 2019 and threw for 3,100 yards and 41 TD's.  Won State.

Assuming he walked on.  How does a kid throw for 41 TD's at the highest level in this state and not get a scholly somewhere?  Anyone know his story?

We need another talented QB. Can Finley play at this level? I’m not sure. He didn’t look great at LSU last season. But as said, LSU didn’t look so great last season. Can he be the guy eventually? I have no idea.

Was a better QB for them than Tuarrr's brother the year before. It was night and day.

Im no huge fan of Nix but head to head last year....Bo Nix looked like a Heisman candidate compared to Finley.

I'm gonna disagree.

The kid's got a huge, massive, explosive arm and one of the sweetest ball releases I've seen in a while.  His mechanics are at least as good as Nix and when I saw him play, he was willing to do the one thing Nix seems incapable of doing -- using the pocket.

I don't know where his head is, but Finley's got significant potential.  I'm not sure what LSU was doing with him after he got thrown into the fire.  Their game plan didn't seem to play into his strengths.  Played in five games, completed 57% of his passes for just shy of 1000 yards.  Five TD, five picks.  QBR 118.  Pretty close to the same performance you got from Nix on average.

Consider that he was an 18 year old, tossed into the mix when the starter went down and it wasn't the trainwreck you probably think you remember.  Somewhere on this board is my take on his first start.  He cut South Carolina apart, leading LSU to 52 points.  You remember the Gamecocks?  Nix was awesome against them throwing three interceptions in a loss.

I'd be glad to have him on board.  Maybe he pushes Nix, because honestly he's sitting there knowing that he can throw the football straight into the ground on 24 consecutive plays and then take an 82-yard backward scramble loss and he's still in the game.  There's nobody off the bench to challenge him.

Again not a big Bo fan but they did go head to head last year. And it was a disaster for Finley. Perhaps both were misguided by horrid coaching and play calling. Benefit of the doubt there for both. But the biggest gain of adding him is what you said towards the end....to push nix. Because right now..bo has no competition in the locker room. And he needs some.

That was his worst game.  First start on the road. A week to get his head blown up after having a really good debut. Stupid coaching decisions to alter the gameplan they'd put in place when Brennan was the starter and try to get it done in a week.

On the opposite side, though, the receivers he had at LSU (and they coaching they got) could make any QB look decent.  They were better than anybody at that position.

I don't know how good he is or could be, but I saw him in several games.  He's one of the few QBs I've seen in a while where I thought "that kid could be really good with a little time and coaching."

Reminded me of a mix between Jamarcus Russell and Dameyune Craig.

Russell was who first came to mind when I saw his footage and height/weight.

His mechanics are better.  I think they are better than Nix.  Doesn't mean HE is better, but his ball release, the consistency, the almost always perfect spiral that's got a little zip on it?  All better.

The guy breaking that video down doesn't seem to realize that most of those passes were pre-snap reads. And the other video only shows a few plays where he had to read the D. But even with the inexperience reading the D, he is dead on with most of his passes.
Does this mean that LSU thought Johnson was a better reader of defenses?

Will the Finley kid be stuck his whole college career making making bad reads look better because of his accuracy?
Its a tough call. But he definitely has a better upside than any other QB not named Nix on the AU tigers football team.

I was mainly looking at his mechanics.  Footwork.  Release point.  Velocity.  Tight ass spiral.  He’s got that kind of arm that makes it look like he’s throwing a baseball.  I don’t dislike Nix. He doesn’t really have any of that.  He throws a football like it’s heavy.

He’s raw.  No doubt. Question is whether he will take to being coached on the things you are talking about.  Nix never got any.  At least before now.

Oddly I still run across early mock drafts that have nix as a first or second round pick next April.

I'm ambivalaquent about it.  As I said before, I would never turn down a physical freak like this guy.  But, it tells me that Co Hargrinz doesn't think that much of Mr. Nix.  It also means you can be 100% certain that one of the other QB's will now enter the Transfunctioner.  Hopefully not Dematrius Davis.

This is interesting if only for the competition. This is gonna be a long year, folks. Might as well buckle in and hope they use the lube this time.

Probably, but the schedule is about as good as we could hope for.  With so many additions on the D through the Transfunctioner, I'm getting a little more optimistic every day.

I don't think it was a move for this season at all honestly.  There was a huge gap between Nix and Davis that The Malron never could fill.  I think this gives Coach Hamsammich 2 possibilities for next season as starters.

I'm stoked about this D, something I had zero warm, moist fuzzies about only a few months ago.

First off, Co Pitman put the beef on these guys, and the big uglies in the trenches who got pushed around last season, should be able to do some pushing back.  And when you add guys like Lee Hunter (6'5" 321 Freshman), Marcus Harris (6'3" 288 Transfer from KU) and Tony Fair (6'3" 330 Transfer from UAB)....along with Andrew Leota (6'4" 250 Transfer from NW) it looks like we'll be able to rotate a bunch of quality foosball players across the front.

Our linebackers are as good as any in the country, bar none.  Don't know how much depth we have, but ZMac, Pappoe and now, Chandler Wooten, will light bitches up.

DB is where things get real.  I thought we would be pretty good back there with a lot of experience returning in Smoke, Roger McCreary, Nehemiah Pritchett (25 tackles), Jaylin Simpson etc.  But now, you add Dreshun Miller (WVU), Donovan Kaufman (Vandy) and Bydarrius Knighten (3 year starter at SE Missouri State), all three of which are bad asses, you'll have guys fighting for playing time.  From what I just read, Kaufman may start at corner right away.

The piece I read also said that other than maybe the LB from Texas A&M, (Forgot his name) Harvinz is most likely done on D.  It said look to add one name from the portal for each room.  QB just got checked off. Look for one RB, WR and O-Lineman to finish off the roster for 2021.

I agree. I don’t thin TJ will start next season. But I do think if things go south or Nix gets hurt, we will actually still be competitive. I could see him start some next year and then be the man after that. then again, Nix my have one of those stubbier games and corch harbinger might be quick with the hook

Mechanics won't mean jack if the o line is as bad as it was at times last year. Auburn made Finley look like Clint Moseley. We all know Bo Nix's one move when the pocket collapses (or he thinks it's collapsing) - roll right and fling it.
I'll admit it was bad.

It was also frustrating as FUCK (the limited amount I watched) to see Nix spin and roll out when he could very easily have taken a step forward and used that second or two to give our receivers a chance to break coverage.

Oh, who am I kidding on that?  Our receivers got even less quality coaching than Nix.  The routes were abysmal and ridiculously sloppy.  A ten-yard route could be eight, eleven, six, or fifteen yards.  There was some quality talent there, but it was so poorly taught that it had no chance.

That still doesn't excuse Nix for flatly refusing to play quarterback and step up into the pocket, set his feet and throw.  For all Finley's assumed faults, I at least saw him do that. He was, in high school, getting better coaching than Gus provided Nix.  When Finley chose (or had to) to run, it wasn't eighteen yards back and in a big ass circle.  He went forward.... Because he'd stepped up and the pursuit was behind him.

It's not a Nix thing.  It's a Gus thing.  He did exactly what he was coached to do.  Remember, Stidham did the exact same thing.

If that's too engrained in his psyche and he pulls that shit this year, sit him and play the big kid from the Bayou.

My only two problems where Nix is concerned are 1.) he's just not very accurate at all.  Don't know how to fix it, and B.) He refuses to eat it when it does break down.  He's far more apt to sling an underhand pass 20 feet up in the air while parallel to the ground than just take the damn sack.

That^^. Mostly.

im no huge fam of what nix is right now. I watched him in the 6A title game on a cold day in December of 2018 at jhs before the 7A game. He looked the part of a sure fire thing as much as I’ve seen in person. Maybe not Trevor Lawrence or Tim Tebow type hype but he was good. His mechanics were good. Decision making was good. He has absolutely regressed under two years of gustard.

with Finley - I’m willing to give him The same benefit of the doubt. K mentioned earlier in this thread the cons he had on his side with that gutted team. I also still have a bad taste for ensminger.

id like to give both nix and finley a fresh start with harsin and Bobo - who I think of much higher collectively than Gus and Ensminger. And their re-development May not happen overnight.

But the great thing here is coming out of high school we know they were super talented with the tools. They will push each other. If nothing else, I like that aspect of this move.

Bobo knows how to get the most out of quarterbacks.  Neither Gus nor Ensminger realize there are more routes than the bubble screen or the go route.

You remember the Gameroosters?  Nix was awesome against them throwing three interceptions in a loss.

I'd be glad to have him on board.  Maybe he pushes Nix, because honestly he's sitting there knowing that he can throw the football straight into the ground on 24 consecutive plays and then take an 82-yard backward scramble loss and he's still in the game.  There's nobody off the bench to challenge him.

Kaos.  Again.

What did he do that didn’t look like just a taller Nix?
A QB cannot play with that same intensity for four quarters. After a quarter of running for his life, he’ll look just like Bo.
He did a great job on that last drive, but the other drives give you an idea of what he is.
Let them fight it out during practice. Play the hot one and pull his ass quick if the job is not getting done.

I disagree.  Completely.

Gus ruined Bo.  What is fucked can't be unfucked.

The other drives?  He had AU moving and headed in to score way before but somebody other than him fumbled.

I don't dislike Nix.  Some of this is not his fault.  If he'd stayed in the game we'd be sitting here looking at the most humiliating loss in Auburn football history.

He was yanked off the bench, where he'd been sitting around re-braiding his hair, and thrown into a game that was, at the time he entered, a lost cause.

It took him a few minutes to settle down.  Did he miss some?  Yeah.  He missed some.  But it took a while to get control of things.   Once he settled in, he also made a handful of throws Nix can't make.  He throws right now like his shoulder is ruined.  He's shotputting the ball. Nothing on it.

I'm not a Nix hater.  But I said when Finley signed/switched he had a lot of raw talent. I said he could challenge Nix. I said he'd step up in the pocket and make plays.

Said it once, will say it again.  Nix plays all four quarters?  We're sitting here tonight bleeding from the mouth, trying to make sense of the most humiliating loss in the history of the program.

I'm not sure what happened, but the entire offense was out of synch with Nix in.  Receivers couldn't catch shit, Tank looks half the man he used to be...Hunter and Shenker seem to be the only consistent bright spots.

That said, K is right, after he shook off the surprise entry into a losing effort, Finley looked in command.  He tends to throw too hard sometimes, but he was still hitting our mostly stone-handed WR corps right in their drop-mitts.

The most frustrating guy on the team is Kobe Fucking Hudson.  Flashes of brilliance marred by complete dipshitted dumbfuckery most of the time.

Its a lot of it yes.

Not just in game but philosophical and development. Were not at practices and seeing the things the Head Guy is seeing. I know this.....the guy replacing him has done nothing but produce high powered offenses and was a Broyles Award finalist last year. He's replacing a lifelong Sun Belt/Conf USA coach whose unit produced hardly anything this year and he's made zero improvement on the recruiting trail from Kodi Burns. There was also a ton of disagreement over who should be on the field vs who should be on the bench.

Every position on the field now gets graded - and our WR corps is the worst by that measurable standard.

Harsin has a pretty long leash in my book.  At least 3 years...barring some Chad Morris/Arky collapse.  He gets the benefit of the doubt.  When he starts canning his guys, then he's buying time and will be suspect.

Its why most think there is more to it than simply "coach wasn't performing". By that measure - yes you are right - many aren't performing. But how any of them "not performing" are not on board with the general direction and consensus of the rest of the staff/team?

...and if they're not "on board" then why the fuck did they show up on campus?  A little early for a mutiny and I've seen nothing to indicate one is warranted (ie - practice fights, general police blotter activity...).

CW was not one of "his" guys.  Werd on the skreet was that some folks on the inside were high on his ability to 'cruit.  There's a reason Harsin had his former OC in an administrative role and had him "working alongside" Williams throughout the spring and fall camps.  This weekend was the perfect opportunity to put the wheels in motion.

From all accounts, he interviewed well and many vouched for him. But his passion wasn't up to Harsin's expectations. While maybe a few of the other coaches are also not performing (one could argue Bobo, DL Coach, even Mason), they are in sync with Harsin on how to right the ship - their approach, their intensity. I think this is where Corn was perhaps different. The Boise guys know what is expected of Harsin. The SEC guys know what is expected at Auburn/SEC. Corn was that odd man out coming from Sun Belt and no P5 experience. But sometimes these things don't rear their heads until you are on the job. And its obvious sometimes that its not going to change. Doesn't mean Corn is good or bad - just that there is a difference in approach that Harsin doesn't think meshes with his overall vision at this point - and that it won't anytime soon. And when you have a Broyles Award Finalist that has worked for you before just sitting there to be had, and he understands that expectation fully? I think it was an easy decision. Now, why he didn't initially hire THIS guy is beyond me. Perhaps it (at first) had to do with Corn's ties into South Alabama and recruiting. But he wasn't exactly lighting it up in that dept either.

I haven't read anything on the subject yet, so I don't know if Co Harvinz has named a starter.  If not, I see Nix starting with a very short leash.  Ironically, it was the Auburn/LSU game last year when Finley got benched and Nix had the best game of his career.

perhaps rekindle the magic of last year against that same LSU team minus Stingley and a couple of DL.

Tony Franklin eviscerates Auburn, Bryan Harsin: ‘You hired a weak man with no backbone’

By Mark Heim | mheim@al.com
The beginning of the end for Bryan Harsin has already begun.

That’s quite a statement, considering the man has coached a grand total of four games at Auburn.

However, the signs have already reared their ugly heads, if you subscribe to Tony Franklin’s line of reasoning.

Yes, that Franklin. The former Auburn coach offensive coordinator fired mid-season by Tommy Tuberville in 2008 held nothing back when talking about the Tigers on “The Coach Tony Franklin” podcast.

“You hired a weak man with no backbone who is gonna get run over by all these boosters,” he said.

It’s already happened, he explained.

The wheels were set in motion on Saturday, Sept. 18 in Happy Valley. Facing fourth-and-2 inside the 5, the Tigers called a questionable and unsuccessful pass play. The result: Penn State 28, Auburn 20.

“You called a press fade for the inside slot receiver for your go-to play to beat Penn State?” he asked. “That’s your go to? That’s what you got? That’s what you go to?”

As a result, the boo birds were out, questioning the play, from Internet trolls to big-money men, Franklin contends. So, Harsin had to give the masses something to quiet the negativity. He gave them a scapegoat, according to the former coach.

On Sunday, Harsin parted ways with first-year wide receivers coach Cornelius Williams less than 24 hours after Auburn completed a come-from-behind 34-24 win against Georgia State in the team’s nonconference finale.

“Four games in and you crack, and you fire your receivers coach?” he asked. “The best coached group on the field for offense was your receivers. You’re basically firing your receivers coach because your offensive line sucks. Your offensive line is bad.”

The proof, he explains, was in the game against Georgia State when TJ Finley hit Shedrick Jackson for the game-winning touchdown with just under a minute to play.

“The ‘great’ Georgia State team that came in and deserved to beat you,” he started. “... You had an offensive lineman who missed a block. He whiffs. Your quarterback makes a play. Then, the play of the day, your receiver, who was coached on what to do on a scramble play, makes the catch for the touchdown.

“Did you fire the offensive line coach? He’s an Alabama guy (Will Friend). That would make all the Auburn people happy. Fire the Alabama offensive line coach. He started four years at Alabama, and you hired him as your offensive line coach?”

Friend, for the record, had coaching stints at Tennessee, Colorado State and Georgia before landing the job at Auburn.

Now, Franklin knows what you are thinking. He is bitter toward Auburn because he was fired in the middle of the 2008 season. In addition, he coached Williams at Troy, so he has a personal allegiance to the former Hoover High star.

You’re right. He loves Williams, but he also loves Auburn, he said. He went on to say he “deserved” to be fired in 2008 and “is good with it.”

“You showed the powers that be they run the show,” Franklin said of Harsin. “They make the calls.

“If you want to blame somebody for sucking right now, the way your football team sucks, I got a great idea. Instead of firing Cornelius, or whoever the next guy is you’re going to fire, just quit. Just resign.”

Franklin continued to hammer away at the Tigers, who he said are nothing more than a reflection of their coach.

“The characteristics of this football team are the same as the coach: soft, soft, soft,” he said.

“They aren’t a physical team. I’ve seen physical Auburn football many times in my life as a fan, as a coach.”

Franklin’s zingers continued throughout his 22-minute podcast.

Here are some of the more sensational comments below.

On the OL

“The offensive line is worse than bad. They don’t look like they know what they are doing. ... They can’t pass pro(tect). The quarterback already has the yips. I don’t think the quarterbacks are well coached either. The running backs don’t make plays in space against a good team.”

On playing hard

“The offense and defense are soft. They don’t play hard, and they’re not very good or talented. If they played the hardest they could play, you could be a middle-of-the-pack SEC West team. If you don’t get it fixed, I don’t know if you can win a game in the SEC.”

On Georgia State

“You almost lost to Georgia State? You should have lost to Georgia State. Georgia State has a better team than you do.”

“The problem, no offense to everybody that was there before you, you don’t have many good players.”

On Harsin being the next Tuberville

“We turn into Tommy Tuberville No. 2. The thing about Tommy Tuberville is he’s gonna get some good players. Whatever it took to get him, he’s gonna get them. Now, in the end, he didn’t have good enough players. He knew (Alabama coach) Nick Saban was gonna beat his brains out, so he quit. They paid him $5 million to quit.”

On competing with Alabama

“You’re not in the same hemisphere with Alabama talent wise, but you are also really poorly coached. That’s a reflection of you, sir, Bryan Harsin.”

Check out the Franklin podcast here.

The only thing a pocket passer will be able to do in this offense is get killed.

Our line is pretty solid in run blocking.  If the gawldang WRs would catch a fucking ball (looking at YOU Kobe Hudson), the offense could get some room to breathe.

I anticipate that nasty UGA defense will stack the box and hound Nix all day.  So, we need lots of slants, screens and QB draws to slow them down a bit and loosen up the D a bit.

The ONLY thing that is going to slow them down is when they are briefly resting on the sidelines in between their offense shredding our weak secondary.  I feel like the only hope we have is that they make themselves tired from all the excessive scoring and dancing they will do against us. That will be our chance to sneak up and thump them on the nutts.

. Now, why he didn't initially hire THIS guy is beyond me. Perhaps it (at first) had to do with Corn's ties into South Alabama and recruiting. But he wasn't exactly lighting it up in that dept either.

From what I was told, the new guy was not available at the time of hiring. He was hanging out in Boise and expecting to get the BSU job. By the time that did not happen, Harsin had already hired Corn. So he hired the new guy as an analyst.

Not saying that.  I always believe in showing up.
I just think I am being pragmatic based on what empirical data we have up to this point.
