Title: The Current State Of Recruiting
Post by: Snaggletiger on December 30, 2020, 12:22:30 PM
The following piece from AUNerd with College & Magnolia either points out what a coaching change will do to recruiting, or just how crappy this class was going to be had Gus stayed.  Who knows?  On one hand, it sounds like a lot of kids decided to go elsewhere because of the change.  Reality is that we only had about 12 verbals going in.  The one thing that does come to light in reading different names and scenarios, is how different things are now.  We're basically in a free agent system and could possibly fill the rest of our class with the majority of them being transfers.  I guess that's the way of the college football world these days.  anywhoze....

Auburn’s 2021 signing class is officially a transition class which makes its #47 overall ranking (https://247sports.com/college/auburn/Season/2021-Football/Commits/) much easier to swallow. Obviously it’s not great but now it’s at least the first part of a recruiting class for a brand new coach rather than multi years worth of work from a coach in his 8th season.
What’s also nice for new head coach Bryan Harsin is that he has plenty of spots to work with over the coming months. The Tigers signed only 11 players during the early signing period. Blue shirt Oscar Chapman’s scholarship counted towards this year’s 25 incoming scholarship limit so theoretically Auburn should have 13 spots to fill.
Who might those guys be? Well it’s still pretty early so it’s hard to be too specific. Especially considering he hasn’t hired any new staff members. My suspicion is he will wait for Auburn to finish their bowl game before announcing staffing changes. I expect you will see targets start to pop up on the board next week. But for now, I am going to take some educated guesses at names to know and what Harsin might consider to be the biggest positions of need.
Offensive Line (2-3)
Remember how excited we all were about this OL class over the summer? At the time the Tigers had four commits, two from blue chips, and were still chasing the big fish of 5-star Amarius Mims (https://247sports.com/player/amarius-mims-46079928/).
Those days are long gone.
3-star Garner Langlo was the only OL signee two weeks ago (https://www.collegeandmagnolia.com/2020/12/16/22176972/2021-3-star-offensive-lineman-garner-langlo-signs-auburn). 4-star OG Jaeden Roberts elected to flip to the Tide (https://www.rollbamaroll.com/2020/12/25/22199976/flipped-former-auburn-college-football-commit-signs-with-alabama-crimson-tide-recruiting-class-2021) while previous flips 3-star OT J’Marion Gooch (https://247sports.com/player/jmarion-gooch-46058359/) (Tennessee) and 4-star OT Caleb Johnson (https://247sports.com/player/caleb-johnson-46082805/) (Notre Dame (https://www.onefootdown.com/)) both signed. It also looks likely the Tigers will lose Harvard graduate transfer commit Eric Wilson to LSU (https://www.andthevalleyshook.com/) though I believe Harsin is working to keep him the fold.
Put simply, Auburn’s new head coach has a lot of work to do in a short amount of time.
I will be shocked if Auburn doesn’t sign at least one offensive tackle from the transfer portal. My bet is the Tigers try to get two and maybe even an interior lineman. Auburn could also go to the JUCO or undergraduate ranks too. I think ideally, Auburn would get a starter caliber tackle from the portal, a prep OT with upside and then maybe one more starter caliber lineman from the portal. The Tigers need more competition up front.
Who might those names be remain a mystery. I was keeping an eye on guys like Triston Miller (UNC transfer), Junior Uzebu (Vandy transfer) and Willie Allen (La Tech transfer) but they have all recently committed. More names will likely hit the portal in the coming days as well. I also have my eyes on Marcus Minor (Maryland transfer) and Ty’kieast Crawford (Charlotte transfer). Both were former blue chip OTs coming out of high school.
As for the high school or JUCO ranks, 3-star OT Jason White (https://247sports.com/player/jason-white-46084267) is a current Boise State (https://www.obnug.com/) commit that might be someone Harsin tries to bring with him to the Plains. There’s also 4-star OG Josh Simmons (https://247sports.com/player/josh-simmons-46079618/) who he offered while at Boise State that appears to be trending to San Diego State. Might Harsin try to reconnect and convince him to give AU a look? Finally, 3-star OT Jordan Moko (https://247sports.com/Player/Jordan-Moko-46101830/), 3-star OT Jeremiah Crawford (https://247sports.com/Player/Jeremiah-Crawford-46085689/) and OT Matt Keeler (https://247sports.com/player/matt-keeler-46052060/) are JUCO names to monitor moving forward.
Again, there should be better intel starting next week when Auburn’s new coaching staff takes over.
Defensive Line (1-2)
Despite the coaching turnover, Auburn did a very good job keeping this solid defensive line class in tact. 4-star Lee Hunter (https://247sports.com/player/lee-hunter-46058922), 4-star Marquis Robinson (https://247sports.com/player/marquis-robinson-46080807) and 3-star Tobechi Okoli (https://247sports.com/player/tobechi-okoli-46094840) all elected to sign early. That gives Harsin two interior defensive lineman who could potentially help immediately and a developmental prospect at end with a high ceiling.
Now Auburn needs a pass rusher. 4-star BUCK Jeremiah Williams (https://247sports.com/player/jeremiah-williams-46055165/) flirted with the idea of waiting until February but decided to stick with the Gators. He was likely one of the two players Kevin Steele mentioned that “they flipped but they flipped back”. 3-star BUCK George Wilson (https://247sports.com/player/george-wilson-46094970/) and 3-star JUCO BUCK Byron Young (https://247sports.com/Player/Byron-Young-46109385/) both were trending towards Auburn the week before Malzahn’s firing. That changed things and Wilson ended up signing with Florida State (https://www.tomahawknation.com/) while Young surprised a lot of people by signing with Tennessee. The final bit of bad news came with graduate transfer Keion White (https://247sports.com/player/keion-white-46037948/) deciding to sign with Georgia Tech (https://www.fromtherumbleseat.com/).
But it’s not all bad. Long time Auburn target 4-star DL Dylan Brooks (https://247sports.com/player/dylan-brooks-46079585/) did not sign early with Tennessee and per AuburnUndercover’s Keith Nieburh, Harsin has made him a top priority. Boise State has had some great success putting pass rushers in the league and Harsin is attempting to sell that background to Brooks. Given Brooks family ties to the program and the fact he decided to wait to sign makes me believe Auburn will end up snagging the top 100 player come National Signing Day.
There’s also 3-star JUCO DL Jimmori Robinson (https://247sports.com/player/jimmori-robinson-46101764/) to consider. He was an early Auburn target before they elected to push for Byron Young instead. Robinson committed to UTSA but decommitted this week. If Harsin wants to add another edge player to this class he might circle back to the JUCO standout.
Also always the possibility Auburn gets a pass rusher from the transfer portal.
Defensive Back (2-3)
I have no intel backing up this claim but I suspect most of the juniors in Auburn’s secondary will declare early for the draft. Jamien Sherwood, Smoke Monday, Roger McCreary and Christian Tutt are eligible to head off to the next level. It would not surprise me if at least two, if not more, make that jump.
If that ends up being the case, I imagine Harsin will attempt to add a few more DB pieces to this 2021 class. He inherits three good ones in 4-star Ahmari Harvey (https://247sports.com/player/ahmari-harvey-46080583), 3-star Kamal Hadden (https://247sports.com/player/kamal-hadden-46054532) and 3-star A.D. Diamond (https://247sports.com/player/armani-diamond-46086246). Do it all athlete 3-star Tar’Varish Dawson (https://247sports.com/player/tarvarish-dawson-46056861) is still committed to Auburn but has now become one of the hottest names on the recruiting trail in the late period. He’s landed a bunch of offers recently most notably from Texas A&M (https://www.goodbullhunting.com/). Auburn has its work cut out to keep him but Harsin has made it clear to the long time AU commit he wants him in this class.
I don’t have a ton of names right now which shouldn’t come as a surprise. There are a few guys though that are worth monitoring. From the transfer portal, keep an eye on former South Carolina Gamecock Jammie Robinson. He played with Big Kat Bryant in high school and the Tigers recruited him hard a few years ago. In the prep ranks, in state stand out 3-star Juwan Gaston (https://247sports.com/player/juwon-gaston-46108900/) is someone Kevin Steele is reportedly high on. Will he land an offer with this new staff? No idea but definitely a name to watch.
Running Back (1-2)
Auburn has already lost two running backs to the transfer portal this year and could lose more following the bowl game. Before I go any further, no I do not believe Tank Bigsby will transfer. He’s the one I am most confident in returning next season.
Best case scenario, Auburn has 3 backs return next year in Bigsby, D.J. Williams and Shaun Shivers. Worst case, only 1 in Bigsby. Either way, Auburn needs to add more bodies. My suspicion is the Tigers will look to add one back from the portal and one from the prep ranks. The portal names to watch are Deondrick Glass (Oklahoma State transfer (https://www.cowboysrideforfree.com/)), Markese Stepp (USC transfer), Iverson Clement (Florida transfer) and Christian Turner (Michigan transfer). In the high school ranks there’s former Boise State commit 3-star Eli Sanders (https://247sports.com/player/eli-sanders-46098989/), 3-star Alton McCaskill (https://247sports.com/player/alton-mccaskill-46084459/), 4-star Ke’Travion Hargrove (https://247sports.com/player/ketravion-hargrove-46099596/) and 3-star Jaylin White (https://247sports.com/player/jaylin-white-46097494/).
It will likely be difficult to convince a kid from the portal to be Tank’s backup so I lean more towards Auburn working hard to keep Williams and Shivers on the team while adding one back from high school ranks.
Linebacker (1)
Before Malzahn was fired, Auburn was on pace to close very strong at this position. 5-star Terrence Lewis (https://247sports.com/player/terrence-lewis-46058521/) and 4-star Trevin Wallace (https://247sports.com/player/trevin-wallace-46101045/) were likely to commit and sign with the Tigers during the Early Signing Period. But the coaching change has understandably shaken things up.
It now appears Auburn is out of the Lewis sweepstakes. Maryland and Miami have now emerged as possibly the top contenders and it doesn’t sound like Harsin is going to push to get Auburn back in the race. Wallace, however, remains a top target for the Tigers. Per Keith Niebuhr, Auburn’s new head coach had a positive one hour conversation with the four star linebacker (https://247sports.com/Article/Auburn-football-coach-Bryan-Harsin-makes-strong-first-impression-on-key-target-157914475/). If Travis Williams is retained, I believe Wallace still ends up in Auburn’s class. If not, Auburn will still have a chance but will likely face some stiff competition.
Quarterback?
I am as big a Bo Nix fan as you will find on Auburn internet but even I have limits to my homerism. While I believe Bryan Harsin can unlock Nix’s 5-star potential, it would be foolish to assume that just because there’s been a coaching change that things will get much better at quarterback. Nix has under performed in his two years as starter and will need to take a major step forward in 2021 if the Tigers want to challenge for any sort of championships. 4-star Dematrius Davis (https://247sports.com/player/dematrius-davis-46042948) is a big time player and could push Nix this spring but don’t be surprised if Harsin decides to bring in someone from the portal to compete for the starting job.
I don’t know of any specific target but some names to monitor are former UNC 4-star signee Jace Ruder and USF transfer Jordan McCloud. It also wouldn’t surprise me to see Auburn kick the tires on guys like Jawon Pass from Louisville and Jake Bentley.
In a perfect world, Nix will click with Harsin and Auburn fans can finally see the former 5-star reach his potential. But if it doesn’t happen, Auburn’s new head coach will need to have a backup plan. He didn’t recruit Nix so there’s unlikely to be the same attachment we saw with Gus Malzahn. Just one of the many interesting storylines to unfold this off-season on the Plains.

There was no chub or even slight tingly sensations while reading it.  I guess the only positive is possibly claiming some experience and talent from the continuum transfunctioner thingy.

I don't know if anyone watching the round hoops game caught it, but one of the announcers made the comment as they were showing Coach Harvinz waving to the crowd, that they love him now but wait til he loses one game.  Go....Fuck....Your....Self!!!!

I have noticed that the older some people get, the worse their sense of humor. It’s especially noticeable if they had a shitty personality  before senility set in.

A look at Auburn's O-Line recruiting compared to other programs
ByJason Caldwell  (https://247sports.com/User/JasonCaldwell/)18 minutes ago

AUBURN, Alabama—When evaluating the issues and reasons why it ultimately didn’t work for Gus Malzahn (https://247sports.com/Coach/Gus-Malzahn-17) during his time as head coach of the Auburn  football Tigers, you have to look no further than offensive line recruiting to see why. It’s no secret that Auburn has struggled to sign top offensive line prospects in the last five years, but when you break it down and look at the numbers compared to Auburn's biggest rivals in the Southeastern Conference the numbers are startling.

Since the 2017 signing class, which makes up five recruiting classes when you count the most recent early signing period, Auburn has signed a total of just 14 offensive linemen compared to 20 for Alabama, 22 for Georgia and 18 for LSU. Just in terms of overall numbers, the lack of options is one part of the equation, but that’s just the beginning.

It’s not just numbers, but the talent level that remains a serious issue as well. In the last five classes Auburn has signed just one 5-star (Calvin Ashley (https://247sports.com/Player/Calvin-Ashley-35824)) and three 4-stars (Austin Troxell (https://247sports.com/Player/Austin-Troxell-77294), Nick Brahms (https://247sports.com/Player/Nick-Brahms-78712), Keiondre Jones (https://247sports.com/Player/Keiondre-Jones-83780)) on the offensive line.

By comparison, Alabama has signed 17 5-star and 4-star offensive linemen during that same stretch. Georgia has signed 18 such players during the same span while LSU has signed just nine with no 5-stars in the bunch.

Auburn's goal is not just competing in the Southeastern Conference, but challenging the top teams from anywhere t try to make a playoff run. That means going up against the most consistent teams in college footbLL like Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma. In addition to the three SEC teams, those are the three most successful programs in the country at the moment.

When comparing Auburn to those three teams the issue remains the same. Ohio State in the last five classes, including this year, has signed 19 total offensive linemen with 14 of those 5-star or 4-star prospects. Over the same period Clemson has signed 19 offensive linemen with 11 of them either 5-star or 4-star prospects. Oklahoma is much of the same, signing 19 offensive linemen with 14 of those considered blue chip prospects.

To take things another step, comparing Auburn to Tennessee you see the Tigers were even behind the Vols in terms of recruiting on the offensive line despite the program being on much more solid footing. In the last five classes the Vols have signed 19 total players on the offensive line with three 5-stars and three 4-stars. While that’s much more along the line of Auburn, signing an extra lineman on average each year gave them an opportunity to build more quality depth.

One more comparison is at Kentucky where the Wildcats have put together some strong offensive lines under Coach Mark Stoops (https://247sports.com/Coach/Mark-Stoops-43). While they have done a great job of coaching up guys and development, Kentucky’s recruiting has been very much on par with what Auburn has done over the same period. In the last five classes the Wildcats have signed five 4-star prospects and 13 3-star offensive linemen. While it’s pretty close it’s pretty clear Kentucky has done a better job of recruiting up front than Auburn in the last five years.

If the Tigers want to get back to the top of the SEC and begin competing for championships once again, that’s going to start with putting more of an emphasis on offensive line recruiting moving forward. That starts now for Coach Bryan Harsin (https://247sports.com/Coach/Bryan-Harsin-799) and his staff.

That piece was Snagaliciously eye-opening.  Plus, no mention of a long snapper anywhere in there.  Curse you Gus.  In all seriousness, that paints a great picture of why Coach Habanero comes in behind the 8-ball.  The numbers and ratings speak for themselves, and when you think about the transfers they've gotten over the last few years, the pic gets even uglier. They've had O-line transfers from UMass, Akron and now Harvard.  Although, Jack Driscoll did make it in the pros. No wonder why we can't line up with anybody legit anymore.

Cliff note version:

Gus didn't recruit OL worth a damn, Gus didn't develop any QB's, Take away the 2013 season and Gus was a below average coach who walked away with 11 million and left Auburn in a shit hole.

Picked up a giant (6'7"/315) OT....yes, an actual Offensive Tackle.
3-4* depending on the source.

He was the first pickup of the Harbinger era.  6-2, 250 DE.  Samoan, I think.  Prowlie would be proud.
This is pickup #2...a dang pickup of an OT that had been committed to Tennessee.

Rivals 250 is picked clean by the haves in the AP final seven plus Florida, Oregon and USC.

Our highest rated player is Lee Hunter a defensive lineman which we definitely need.

Hunsucker is gonna have to scrounge for the last ten or so from the can under the sink.
There's barely a crumb left to be had. The cats even fared better.

LB didn't seem to be an area of need necessarily tho.  Maybe he could turn into a rush end?

Read an article of former players praising Derek Mason, one in particular at Vandy and now in the NFL. Spoke of the first time he was beaten deep by a FUGA receiver (Godwin) for a score and how pissed he was and how Mason spent almost two hours with him afterwards.

Anyway I'm not sure Mason has time to burn on any one individual in our secondary but I imagine he's seen some film and could handle it by appointment.

No disrespect to Bo, Hershcel, Billy, Barry, Emmitt or anyone else, but Marcus Dupree was quite possibly the most talented running back I ever saw.  Uncanny combination of speed, power, vision and balance. You go watch his high school highlights and its stunning. Cover five yards in a step and a half. Bull over and through people.  He could have played any position and dominated.  His high school wasn't far from where I grew up and we started hearing about him when he was in 8th or 9th grade.

It's a shame his brain was behind the rest of his body.  I still wonder what he could have become without the entourage of 'uncles' and handlers who latched onto him, got into his head and ruined his career.  He had the potential to be on the Mount Rushmore of college backs with Herschel, Bo and Barry.  And without that dumbass Switzer loading him up like a pack mule, he might have gone on to an NFL career people would talk about forever.  But none of that happened. So.

I made the mistake of doing what I swore I wouldn't.  (Not that this is the first time that's happened) I fell for the click bait and read a piece that was entitled something along the lines of Harvinz already being behind.  What in the wide wide world of sports is this guy's problem? He's not necessarily wrong, but it's not just a Harsin problem.  EVERYONE is behind Saban and there doesn't appear to be any way to catch up with him consistently.

It's definitely draining the fun out of the game for 99.9% of college football fans.

Also, the above tweets were about a MS running back that broke Marcus Dupree's TD record signing with AU and Truesdell returning for his 2nd senior season.

Smart move by Truesdale.

I’m not sold on the Hunter kid just yet. Good speed and size, but I didn’t see a lot of wiggle. After watching Tank, I need more wiggle!

I like the Hunter kid, if for nothing else, depth at the position.  Less than a week ago, we had two scholarship RB's on the roster.  With Swing Pass Barrett returning to the position, at least we have some bodies back there.

Same goes for True.  I don't mean this the wrong way but, not a fan.  New would occasionally jump up and make a decent play, but True was just occupying space.  But I'm glad to have him back.  As I said earlier, we played the majority of the bowl game with Jeremiah Wright at nose tackle.  Huge kid and maybe that's a better fit for him because he was signed as an offensive lineman.  There was very little behind True and New last year.  I'm hoping Wright develops and a couple of these incoming freshmen turn out to be studs.

The kid that just broke his record that Auburn signed is not a 3 star. No way in hell. Ratings were affected this year by lack of camps and visits. Rivals has even admitted such. There will be a lot of 3 star type guys from this entire 2021 class that will overachieve because of this. Not just auburn but a lot of schools. Ratings are just extremely skewed right now past the top 150 overall players.
