Title: Pandemic Viewing
Post by: wesfau2 on December 08, 2020, 11:53:48 AM
Whatcha watching on lockdown?

Wayne: ultra-violent, do-gooder teen seeks family heirloom.  Awesome and highly recommended.

The Mandolorian: Stylish, action-packed, nods to the old films and extended SW universe.  Cannot recommend enough.

Raised by Wolves: Alien canon backstory about the humans' exodus from Earth.  Slow-burn and I'm only halfway through.  Recommend: TBD.

I Know This Much Is True: Goddamned depressing story of twin brothers, one institutionalized.  Great acting by Ruffalo, but FUCKING DEPRESSING.

On steady repeat: Community and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Ill be your huckleberry here although I'm not sure what is locked down where you live in the land of Deregulated Desantis Sunshine 9 months in.....BUTTTTT

about 3 months ago I switched from Sling to the Hulu Live TV Bundle (Hulu on Demand, Hulu Live TV guide with HBO MAX, Disney+, ESPN+ - yes, I like the 30 for 30s) - damn that was like going from a dinky moped to a new Corvette in one move. Anywho....been catching a lot of overdue movies on demand on Hulu Base and several movies/docus/series on HBO as well. Caught the Richard Jewell movie last week which is a fascinating study really on overzealous journalism that we've all seem to forget about. Highly recommend. Also caught a few others as well around Halloween - spook movies - Annabelle, the new Halloween, Llorona, etc.

HBO has great original programming, I have to admit. From Sopranos, True Detective and others not mentioned. But they had one recently called the Originalist that took place in Georgia. It was pretty good. Apparently based off Stephen Kings stuff too.

Just to kill time - the old standbys - nothing crazy great, just good mood lifteruppers - Friends, Sunny in Philly, Impractical Jokers, Dirty Jobs, Pawn Stars. Usually they become nice background noise while doing something else.

Agree with Wes on Mandalorian.  The last 2 episodes have been the best Star Wars since Empire Strikes Back.

The Right Stuff - think I like the old movie better.

the irony in a show like gunsmoke being looked at as boring (and it can be, I agree), is that what it is about was historically anything BUT boring - in the day and part of the country (or err territory) where you didn't know if that night's nap would be in your bed or in a pine box. The Wild West was wacky.

I really enjoyed it.  Didn't rely at all on the movie and the acting was solid.   I honestly didn't know where it was going up to the end.

NOTE: if you are bothered by current social commentary, you might get TRIGGERED by this show.

I'm about to start Schitts Creek.  I watched one episode the other night, not sure what season it was from, but I knew I needed to go back to the beginning.  The one I watched had a bit of that Always Sunny feel to it.

If you love you some music, there's nothing better on the tubes than AXS TV.  One of the best channels I've ever seen.  With a few exceptions, it's all music, all of the time.  In the last few months alone, I've seen concerts from Heart, Bad Company, Peter Frampton, The Eagles, Tom Petty and a butt load of others.  You got Live From Daryl's House, Rock Legends (They're doing Bon Jovi today along with The Rolling Stones), The Big Interview with Dan Rather.

BTW, Dan Rather does one of the best interview sessions with a veritable plethora (Yeah, I said it) of stars.  These are one hour interviews and Rather covers it all and pulls no punches.  I've seen Kid Rock, Bryan Adams, Don Felder, Jack White (Great take on social media) Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ice Cube etc.

Long story short, AXS has become my "lock down" go to.

The Expanse. Gritty sci-fi.

I have been told is good:
Bosch

I forgot Utopia.  Amazon show that is quite literally pandemic viewing.

Watched it all.  Weird.  Possibly the worst timing of any show debut in the history of man.  There's a graphic novel comic that foretells a worldwide man-made pandemic with a billionaire at the center of a conspiracy that's driving it.  Is he making people sick on purpose to promote his agenda?

The show follows the carnage-filled exploits of a group of nerds who converge at a comic convention to bid on the surprise discovery of the follow-up to the original graphic novel.  They aren't the only people wanting it, though.  Some want it more than others.

The problem for the Scooby gang of comic nerds is that their beloved graphic novel doesn't directly explain what's going on, the pages of the book are filled with context clues that hard-core followers pore over to glean the hidden meanings and understand the reality behind the facade.

Can't STAND John Cusack, but he plays Bill Gates basically.

What's stunning to me is how closely some of this stuff hews to what's actually happening in the world today (sans the prophetic comic, of course).  If you can take a crowd standing outside a town under quarantine changing "release the vaccine"?  Then this probably works for you.

What have yo done to earn your place in this crowded world?

Has Jessica Rothe, Dwight (from Office), a few other faces you might recognize.  And a icily cruel quasi-bad guy who doesn't really fit any traditional bad-guy mold.

VERY odd show.  Pacing is weird.  It lags in odd places, flies in others.  There's a resigned brutality to it that almost seems normal.  Well, yeah, in a real situation you'd probably have to shoot that one.  Just how it works.

Didn't much like the way it closed out.

NYPD Blues-  Never saw it

Dateline uncovered-  this show, shows me how stupid and greedy folks are.

I liked Schitts Creek. Saw all of it I guess. I put it up there with Ozark but maybe a little better to me. Not as good as Saul but that was my favorite of modern TV.

But you have to keep in mind my taste is much more refined.

He's the poster child for the transition from actual unbiased reporting to crusading, rampant bias masquerading as journalism.

His AXS interviews aren't always awful.  I liked the one he did with Styx and his interview with Paul Stanley was good.  When he reins in his insufferable "holier than thou" pontification and eases back on his penchant for talking down to the viewer, he's not bad.  But that's what makes it so frustrating because he rarely does that.

I've never really liked him, though.  That dates all the way back to his days as a field reporter in Vietnam.  Even as a kid, I found him to be pompous and un-American in the way he presented things.  I blame him, in part, for the "America bad" slant that has become part and parcel of mainstream media coverage.

So nah.  I don't much care for him.

Started my annual rewatch of the James Bond series. Got through all the Connerys so far (and the one Lazenby while skipping the farce version of Casino Royale). Hoping to pick up the Roger Moores starting next week. Good chance this will span into 2021.

On deck for the movie podcast:
Back to the Future parts 2&3 (1 is already recorded and in the can)
Diabolique (1955)
Labyrinth (I've actually never seen it so should be fun times.)

I'll tell you what, some of you guys ruin a good thing with your child perns.  I was enjoying my pandemic viewing and now this.  From foxy newz

Pornhub issued a series of new restrictions on user experience Tuesday as it faced backlash over an explosive report on underage (https://www.foxnews.com/category/us/crime/sex-crimes) sex trafficking victims being exploited on its platform.

"At Pornhub, nothing is more important than the safety of our community," a statement from the company read. "Our core values such as inclusivity, freedom of expression and privacy are only possible when our platform is trusted by our users. This is why we have always been committed to eliminating illegal content, including non-consensual material and child sexual abuse material."
The streaming giant announced, among other things, that it would only allow "properly identified users" to upload content on the site. It also announced it would ban downloads and expand moderation on the site.
While the site has faced scrutiny in the past, the criticism seemed to intensify after New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof detailed multiple allegations (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/04/opinion/sunday/pornhub-rape-trafficking.html) of sexual exploitation on the platform.

One of those victims, a woman identified as "Nicole," claimed underage videos of her naked were posted to the site. She reportedly told Pornhub: “You really need a better system. … I tried to kill myself multiple times after finding myself reuploaded on your website."
In a statement to Fox News last week, Pornhub denied allowing child sexual abuse material on its platform.

"Any assertion that we allow CSAM is irresponsible and flagrantly untrue," a statement from the company read referring to child sexual abuse material. "We have zero tolerance for CSAM. Pornhub is unequivocally committed to combating CSAM, and has instituted an industry-leading trust and safety policy to identify and eradicate illegal material from our community."

Its newest rules came amid renewed scrutiny in the Senate and as major credit card companies (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/07/business/visa-mastercard-pornhub.html) said they would investigate the platform's activities.

However, Dani Pinter, Nicole's attorney at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, maintains that the platform can't be trusted even with its new policies.

"I don't trust them at all to do what they're saying they're going to do -- first of all," she said. "And secondly, it's really irrelevant because there's nothing new that has come to light to them. We have at the national center have been talking about all of these issues for years -- specifically targeting Pornhub."

She also pointed to activist Laila Mickelwait's work calling out the company, including a massive petition which received 2.1 million signatures backing her call to shut down the platform.

"People have been directly asking Pornhub to respond for months on end so clearly this is nothing but self-preservation and gaslighting," Pinter said.
Pornhub did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment.

Pinter intends to bring civil litigation, leveraging an exception to the legal immunity typically granted to platforms like Pornhub. In 2018, President Trump signed legislation that blocked sites from using Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act as a defense for several sex trafficking offenses, regardless of whether they materially contributed to the unlawful conduct. It specifically aims to hold (https://wagner.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/wagner-statement-on-president-signing-fosta-into-law-0) platforms accountable if they knowingly facilitate sex trafficking.

While the scope of that exception is unclear, Pinter is contending it applies to platforms that "should have known" about trafficking content.

For months, Pornhub has been fending off criticism like Pinter's and faced a petition with 2.1 million signatures calling for the site to be shut down. At the congressional level, the company faced backlash from lawmakers like Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., who called on the Justice Department to investigate the company.

Last week, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., also vowed to introduce legislation that would grant sex trafficking victims a federal right to sue Pornhub.
As part of Pornhub's new policies, it pledged to release a transparency report on its content moderation from 2020.

Started a new one tonight on hbo max. Just came out this week. What appears to be a 4-5 part episodic view of the Heavens Gate cult that existed from the mid 70s to 1997 when they all rode the comet to suicide. I’ve seen numerous documentaries and interviews about Jim Jones. But damn these heavens gate people were another level of crazy. Essentially a ufo “religion”. It’s crazy yet fascinating at the same time.  Much like the Jonestown stuff.

Not locked down by any means.  Fuck that noise.

I'm finally catching up on Better Call Saul, Criminal Minds, last season of Black Mirror, Chicago PD, Law & Order: SVU, and several serial killer documentaries.  Manhunt: Hunt for the Unabomber is a 6 episode series on Netflix and it is good.

Also wanting to start Blacklist in the next week or so.

I got bored with Blacklist pretty early on.  There was this whole period where the main chick was clearly wearing a wig and I hated that.

I've kicked over to some of the British shows lately.  Luther is pretty good. Early Idris.

I don't like Binklecrimp Dinglesnatch at all, but I have to admit that his Sherlock is actually really interesting.  It's implausible at times, but you can see how it impacted the RDJ version that came later.  I don't think those (entertaining) movies would have existed without this series to set the stage.

Benny Hill.  Dumb comedy that would be eviscerated in the current "everybody's offended" culture, but it just makes me laugh.

Also found an old comedy called Keeping Up Appearances.  It has its moments. I much prefer the British comedic style generally.  It works for me. What passes for comedy in the US doesn't as a general rule (Carrey, Ferrell, Rogen, any Wilson, Vaughn.... none of them are funny in the least).  KUA wouldn't be for everyone (and probably not for most here).

Snagette loves her some Criminal Minds.  I, on the other hand, want to punch every one of them in the larynx.  So, the team is called to a murder scene in Reno Nevada. They see the body of a young girl stabbed multiple times and tied to a chair.  Based solely on this, they gather the entire Reno PD in a room and take turns bringing them up to speed on the "Unsub".  The Unsub????  What the fuck is an Unsub?  Pow, right to the larynx.

The Unsub is a man in his mid 30's with short brown hair and a tennis shoe fetish.  Preferably Adidas.

He's into weight lifting but was traumatized as a child when his mother forgot about him and left him in a grocery store while she drove home and put away the groceries.

Our Unsub has a thing for Orville Redenbacher popcorn, the buttered kind. And he's likely to be hanging out in front of dry cleaners around lunch time.

We know that he has fantasies about cereal bowls and loves to polish rear bumpers at local used car dealerships after hours.

POW!!! Right to the larynx.

We're riding the same bus.  I can't STAND that show.  I'm sick of hearing my daughters tell me how "beautiful" Matthew Cock Gobbler is.   That wormy pseudo-intellectual fop sickens me.

But every single time I think I just want to nuke the show from my television for all eternity?  This happens.

I'd like to punch that in the larynx but with a different appendage.

I used to love Black Mirror...some episodes are better than others but I like the underlying theme in them - esp today in 2020....
