Wow.  Death penalty for a beisbol team.
No doubt. Somebody woke up in a really pissed off mood this morning. Its my opinion that this was a bit too harsh especially this coming down an hour after the same two being suspended for 2020.

I was just listening to Dan Patrick and he played a clip of C.C. Sabathia calling out the Astros for cheating and saying they cost us (Yankees) a championship.

Patrick posed the question, "Hey C.C., didn't you win a championship with Roger Clemens and Andy Petitte?  Then shut up!"

This is really teh ghey.

Stealing signs isn't illegal and goes on all the time.  That's not really what they were busted for or the big problem.

The problem is you aren't allowed the competitive advantage of using technology to do it, especially in the dugout.  Gives the home team a much greater advantage. These guys were using direct cameras (aimed at the catcher) and TVs setup (basically around the wall from the dugout) so they could steal signs, also they had cell phones hidden in the dugout which would relay information from the home camera network team (who were in on the plan).

It's pretty much the definition of cheating.

Yes baseball is ghey and technically it isn't cheating until you get caught.

But essentially there are MLB rules that say no electronics (phones, tvs, ipads etc) allowed in and around the dugout so really can't say no one didn't think of it, everyone else was just following the rules.  Plus MLB basically caught another team in 2017 doing this (on a much smaller scale than what was happening in Houston and then Boston) and wrote a memo to the league reminding them of the rules, and said next people we catch doing it will be made an example of.  Hence where we are.

IMO I say just allow the shit and let everyone do it, might make the game more interesting.

Oh I agree that Major League hitters knowing the pitch is a much greater advantage.  But Dan is spot on.  If you benefited from cheating, then shut the hell up.  Plus, I'm 1000% certain this wasn't a couple of old guys trying to hang on.

I wish him nothing but the best, but we said that when we traded for him, and without Stanton protecting him, his production dropped (which I get), but then we get Goldy, and his production...  didn't really improve.

2016 (Miami)  .266/23 HR/76 RBI
2017 (Miami) .312/37 HR/124 RBI
2018 (STL)  .280/23 HR/88 RBI
2019 (STL)  .243/29 HR/89 RBI

If I had to guess a 2020 stat line for him, I'd go with a .265/26 HR/85 RBI

False.

He hit 40 HR and drove in 950 runs against the Braves in the playoffs.

BTW?  It's an Atlanta tradition to grab the guy who hammered them and then watch that guy turn to crap.

Dan "Chopper" Uggla?

That is the scary part.  They've had a long history of doing that.  My hope in this instance is that Ozuna was the best available to fill the power hitting role that Donaldson's departure opened up.  Maybe they weren't enamored by what he did in the playoffs and wasn't even their first choice.  They did try hard to get Josh back, but he was just asking too much at his age.

For me, if we can get a little better stat line than what Jar posted, closer to 30/95, he'll be worth it.

Even if you don't, it's a one year deal, so won't set you back years.  And shit, maybe he hits .315/35HR.  If he's really wanting to make bank, and get a multi year contract from some dumb organization like the Twins, then he needs to.

And Cards did offer him 17.3m, but he spurned us for your 18m.  So not like at least two teams thought he was worth it.  Me personally, I think he's a liability in LF, and doesn't hit consistently enough to warrant that kind of contract.

They were gonna end up paying Donaldson 1 mill per as well in the 3rd and 4th years of that contract. At least azuna is less money and Braves are only on the hook for 1 year. I’m ok with it.

Yeah, it's not going to hurt you guys long term if he doesn't produce.  And he's got every incentive to produce.  If he does, someone will sign him to a long term deal.  If he doesn't, then he gets paid much much less.  And I'm just a bit bitter because we gave up Sandy Alcantara (2019 All Star for Miami), Magneuris Sierra (.190 batter last year splitting the season between the majors and minors, but limited at bats at the major league level), Zac Gallen (called up in June went 3-5 with a 2.66 era and 91 Ks), and Daniel Castano (7-4 in the minors, 3.48 ERA, 104 Ks in 119 IP) for him, and only got basically a two year rental on a guy we expected to hit 35+ HR.

Alright, let's talk some biesbols.  I'll throw out a quick rundown of my Bravos and I expect some analysis from you ladies on your favorite club.

Let me say first off, I think this is as solid a club as we've had in quite a long time from top to bottom.  Which means they'll fall flat on their collective faces and win 73 games.  Honestly, the last two division titles were totally unexpected and may have been won by default as much as anything else.  The division just hasn't been very good overall, despite Washington catching fire at exactly the right time.  But still, the Braves were solid because of A.) Donaldson having a good year and hitting behind Freeman, which finally gave him some real protection, and B.) The emergence of several very young guys on the bump, like Soroka and Fried.  Plus, Acuna, Jr. put in an unbelievable all-around season.

The Ups for 2020:  Everyone is back with the exception of JD.  The young pitchers are more experienced and other young guys in the field like Acuna and Albies should....should only be better with another year under their belts.  Kind of an unknown because of his age, but you have to think the rotation got better with the addition of Cole Hamels.  Also, they added Will Smith, from San Fran, as the closer.  He had an ERA of around 2.50 and 34 saves.  Big guy who gets a ton of strikeouts.  It's been a while since we didn't have closer by committee and hopefully, he'll take over that spot and we have someone we can trust out of the pen.

Brian Sign Stealing Cheater McCann retired so the Braves signed well traveled, Travis d'Arnaud.  He played with 3 different teams last year; however, still managed a nice stat line of .251 16/69.  Honestly, if he can up those numbers even a little as the every day catcher, it's already a huge upgrade at that position.  Hell, I would be an upgrade over Tyler Flowers.

The Downs: The glaring loss is obviously Josh Donaldson.  Marcel Ozuna was picked up, possibly on a one year rent-a-stick contract.  If he reclaims some of his magic from his last year in a Marlins uni, life will be pretty damn good as a Braves fan.  If he plays like he did as a Red Bird, we'll definitely feel the sting of losing JD.

If Hamels stays healthy and gives us 14-15 wins, he'll be worth the price.  But as much as I like this staff for the Braves future, Hamels is not what I was looking for in the off-season.  I think they're solid.  But there's no #1.  There's no Kershaw or Verlander or Strasburg or Scherzer.  How long ago was it now that we had 3 guys we could hand the ball to and think "W"?  I wanted them to find just one.  Didn't happen.

As nit-picky as this sounds, the one thing that makes me question the sanity of management is allowing Luke Jackson anywhere within 35 miles of the stadium.  Why is this guy on this, or any other Major League roster?  I truly believe Kaos could sit on the slider he throws weakly 90% of the time and bat .300.

The Bottom Line: I think the Braves are a little better and certainly more experienced than last year.  Not huge, but certainly improved on paper.  I didn't see the division get any stronger overall, so I look for the ATL to be right there for a division title at the end and a wildcard spot at worst.

Get to it!!!

Pitchers and catchers reported for the Cubs today and I have no idea what their bullpen will look like this season.  They have lost a lot and haven't made very many moves in the offseason. Not sure who the 5th starter will be either.
Hell, I'm not even sure they will have uniforms and everything.

Pretty sure most of them have uniforms.  There's plenty of time to get em' for the rest.

The thing that would concern me is there's probably a fairly short window to get back to the Series, at least pitching-wise.  Not that there's anyone "old" per se, but a lot of guys are on the back side of that prime in the starting rotation. The line up looks solid and should light up the scoreboard.

Here is my thing with Donaldson and to a lesser degree freeman. Sure they had nice seasons. But when it mattered. In the playoffs. They didn’t do jack fuckin shit. Freddie had the broken finger thing going on so I get it. He toughed it out. But Donaldson hit 250 for the season and 150 when it counted in the playoffs.

The biggest loss from Donaldson? Defense. He had one of the best defensive stat lines in the league. But a 35 year old who JUST plays good defense and goes all or nothing on the long ball is not worth 100 million. Not when he only hits 250. And not when he’s MIA when you need him most.

You know who did show up in the playoffs once his team got there? Ozuna

The Braves May have a drop off. Who knows. But it won’t have anything to do with Donaldson. More than likely luke jackson. Always blame Luke Jackson.

I do like the addition of Hamels. Yeah he’s past his prime but still a quality starter with a ton of invaluable experience.

Well, they do have this guy playing every position on the field.  He's a goofy looking S.O.B., but I think I have a mild case of man love going here.

Speaking of minor league contracts, I believe I saw where the Braves signed Charlie Culberson to one.  Not that he's an all star or anything.  He's one of those invaluable guys that can play just about every position on the field and seems to come up with clutch pinch hits all the time.  He's not on the active roster so I wonder if he's not ready mentally after getting his face bashed in by a 95+ fastball late last year.

Jar, fill me in on your Cards.  Who is in the rotation?  I see Mikolas and Flaherty but other than Waino, I really don't recognize a lot of names.  Maybe if I paid attention???

Looks like they stayed pretty much in tact with the entire infield, but outside of Dexter Fowler in the outfield, I'm not familiar with a lot of those guys.

They didn't do much this off season.  Just about everyone is back, except for one OF spot, and I'd expect rookie Austin Dean to be there by the time it's all said and done.  Dex, Bader, and then Dean in the OF.  Around the infield, Goldy, Wong, DeJong, and Carp.  You know the catcher, who is in the last year of his contract.

Starting rotation - Flaherty will be the ace, Hudson, Mikolas, and Waino (also in the last year of his contract).  Guessing the last spot will be Martinez or DeLeon.

Bullpen - Signed some guy from Korea, Kwang-Hyun Kim (could also be a starter).

Biggest question, honestly, is if Yadi and Waino decide to hang it up after this year, and what the last weekend of the season will be if they let Waino make a start?  Won't be a dry eye in the stadium.

A Toronto Blue Jays (https://www.foxnews.com/category/sports/mlb/toronto-blue-jays) catcher was arrested in Florida last week, accused of exposing himself in a shopping center parking lot. Reese McGuire, 24, is facing an indecent exposure charge. Deputies responded to a report of a man sitting inside an SUV in Dunedin, exposed, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

McGuire was cooperative during the arrest and didn’t deny the allegations, deputies said. Officials didn’t provide further details.
TMZ Sports (https://www.tmz.com/2020/02/12/reese-mcguire-toronto-blue-jays-exposure-of-sexual-organs-arrest/), citing a police report, said witnesses told officers that McGuire had been masturbating in his car. Police reportedly found McGuire with his shirt “barely covering his genitals” and his pants around his ankles.

Toronto released a statement on the arrest Wednesday.

“He has been in communication with the Blue Jays and we are working to gather more information,” the team said. “Out of respect for the legal process, neither he nor the club will comment any further at this time.”
McGuire played in 30 games for the Blue Jays in 2019. He batted .299 and hit five home runs in that span.
He was given a notice to appear in court on March 16 and was not taken to jail.

The Cards rotation takes an early, Braves-like, hit.  Miles Mikolas may miss the first month of the season with teh arms troubles.  Mikolas is another Cards pitcher that I love to watch on the bump. He might not be dominant, but he knows how to pitch.  Constant change of speed and location.  That's far more fun for me to watch than every new guy who comes in the game throwing 99 m.p.h.

Bet the ratings are going to suck out loud after all the hemming and hawing to get here. No fans in the stands as well. That's going to be a test balloon for other leagues. I'll be surprised if the Rona-worshipers allow anyone to get withing six feet of pleasure for two years.
I watched some EPL over the weekend, and NBC was piping in crowd noise for the TV feed.  Honestly, the lack of fans didn't bother me, although I'm not a big EPL fan...

And when I say "watched" I really mean, I turned it on, it was live sports, and watched about 5 minutes before taking a nap...

I'm normally one that has no problem with huge contracts and obscene amounts of money many pro athletes make.  The reality is, they wouldn't pay them those sick amounts if the money wasn't there.  It's going somewhere so divvy it up any way you want.

But this back and forth the last few weeks has been a huge turnoff to me.  When there's widespread panic over the Covids and I walk in the Publix and see a bunch of young kids wearing masks and around hundreds of people all day, while making $8.50 an hour, I believe someone bitching about ONLY making $3.9 million to play a few games can kiss my entire ass.

60 game season is crazy enough.  But, looking at the standings and seeing the Braves at 11-7...the Cubbies at 10-3.....and the Cardinals sitting at 2-3???

Those crazy Covid Cards.

I'm happy to have the games cranked back up, but I honestly can't get into cardboard cutouts and the atmosphere sounding like every Marlins home game.  As for my Bravos, they have a solid line up from top to bottom.  But as soon as we lost our ace in Saroka, that was pretty much it.  Our pen is pitching great.  Our starters are teh suxxors.  Other than paying an injured Cole Hamels $18 large to sit at home, they did nothing in the off season to help themselves with the rotation.

I don't see how the cards can even get all their games in, even if they could start later this week.

Uecker is one of my all time favorite personalities.  He was on the Dan Patrick show a few weeks back and man, that interview brought back memories. Yes, I'm old.  But when me and my pops knew that Uecker would be on with Johnny Carson, that was an event. This quote was typical of how all his appearances went.

"The biggest thrill a ballplayer can have is when your son takes after you. That happened when my Bobby was in his championship Little League game. He really showed me something. Struck out three times. Made an error that lost the game. Parents were throwing things at our car and swearing at us as we drove off. Gosh, I was proud."

BTW, one of the things he brought out in his interview with Dan Patrick was that pretty much all of his play-by-play scenes in Major League were ad-libs.

Pretty much at the half way point for most teams....cough cough covid...Cards.  It looks like normal early season standings with a few teams like Minnesota, Oakland and San Diego at or near the top.  History shows they'll usually fade and the cream will rise.  Mmmmm..... But with a 60 game season, who knows?

The Cards (10-8) are playing catch up to the Baby Bears (18-10).  I haven't looked at the schedules but I assume they've got a lot more double dippers ahead of them.  That could be tough.  The Braves (16-12) are hanging in there but injuries and Coronas are kicking them in the teeth. The short season may help their rag-tag bunch of schleps in the starting rotation get through.  If it was a regular season, it could get ugly.

The Dodgers (22-8) are Ron White in-laws level L-O-O-O-A-DED. They'll run away with the entire National League until they hit the playoffs and Clayton Kershaw goes full tard.

With an 8 teams in each League making the playoffs, Cards aren't out of it.  In fact, as of two days ago, they would be a #4 seed in the NL:

#8 Rockies (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/colorado-rockies) (13-15) at #1 Dodgers (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/los-angeles-dodgers) (22-8)
#7 Giants (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/san-francisco-giants) (14-16) at #2 Cubs (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/chicago-cubs) (17-10)
#6 Marlins (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/miami-marlins) (11-11) at #3 Braves (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/atlanta-braves) (16-12)
#5 Cardinals (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/st-louis-cardinals) (9-8) at #4 Padres (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/san-diego-padres) (18-12)

Does this cover just about everyone on the X for the NL?  Even GF's team is in it.

Over in the AL:
#8 Orioles (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/baltimore-orioles) (14-14) at #1 Athletics (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/oakland-athletics) (20-9)
#7 White Sox (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/chicago-white-sox) (17-12) at #2 Rays (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/tampa-bay-rays) (19-10)
#6 Astros (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/houston-astros) (15-13) at #3 Twins (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/minnesota-twins) (19-10)
#5 Indians (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/cleveland-indians) (17-11) at #4 Yankees (https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/new-york-yankees) (16-9)

So no Sox, but Kaos doesn't care anymore, anyway.  Even the Os get in on the fun.

We're at about the "All star break" and I finally have started watching cards game every night on the local channel....

Yo Jar, very happy with Ozuna so far.  Hitting .282 and leading the team in HR (8) and RBI (23).  Can't say I ever paid much attention to his demeanor, but since he's been with the Bravos, this guy looks like he's having a blast.  Always laughing and cutting up.  Plus, with him hitting more gooder right now, he's giving Freeman the same protection that Josh Donaldson gave him last season. With somebody solid behind him, Freddie is easily a .300+ hitter.  Without, not so much.

Looks like Paul Goldmember is having a helluva year so far at the plate.  Not a ton of power (3 HR) but .349 BA? Daayyyuumm.  The power will come when a guy that skrong is making that much contact.

As far as Ozuna goes...  It's amazing how a change of venue works out for someone.  I hope he does well.  He's there on a one year deal, right?  If so, he's going to get paid next year.

Meanwhile, Yuuuuuuuuuu is leading the NL in ERA with a 1.47.  Go figure...

Look, we don't want to hear about your Cubs.  When it's a foregone conclusion that they'll win the Series, it gets kind of boring to talk about them.  We want to discuss up and comers, not someone already at the mountain top.

I'm beginning to worry that Brian Snitker is doing hits of acid between innings.  His coaching, or lack thereof, has cost the Braves 3 games in the last week alone.  Head scratching stuff.

In one of the games, they were down one run going into the 9th.  He decides to put a guy on the bump making his major league debut.  Mind you, the announcers were seriously questioning it, saying there were 3 or 4 guys in the pen who had hardly been used over the previous week.  It didn't go well.  He couldn't get anyone out and what was worse, Snitker didn't have anyone warming up until the kid had thrown 40 pitches.  The Braves scored 2 in their half of the 9th, but too late.

Yesterday was a situation that if I had any hair, it would have all been pulled out.  This is not just a Snitker thing, it's something that's been going on in biesbols for years.  If you have the winning run on 2nd base with nobody out, what is the ONLY call you make?  You...

BLUNT!!!

At the very least, you make every attempt to hit the ball on the ground to the right side.  But, no on both counts.  Just like American History books have been thrown out of our classrooms, it appears Baseball For Dummies, is a thing of the past too.  There's no sacrificing, no moving the runners, no stealing, no hit and runs.  We've digressed to everyone swinging as hard as they can.

Troof.  I wanted JD back but the reality is he was asking way too much to be on the back side of his career.  Obviously, Ozuna has been a good rental so far, but that may wind up being exactly what he is, a 60 game rental.  It appears we've been doing that a lot recently with Matt Kemp, JD and now Ozuna.  But Ozuna is only 29 so he may be one they want to lock up for a while.  I guess they could use that $18 large they're paying Cole Hamels to sleep in every day to help get it done.

The Braves pitching is so depleted that when it was 16-8, I was thinking how embarrassing it will be to score 20 and lose.

Not that it really matters since the Cubs are going all the way, but still pretty cool to see a NL record get broken.

Cards now have 23 games in 18 days.  No breaks between now and the end of the season.  If we make the playoffs it will be a goddamn miracle.

Cubs have no double headers, and two days off.  Braves with no double headers and one day off.

Question for Jarbuzz, since you guys are the only ones ever in here.  So we're 40+ games into this shortened season.  Well, everyone except the sickly Cards.  What do you think about the rules changes implemented for this shortened season.  Am I right in understanding they're experimental?  There are others, but basically, the big changes are:

Designated hitters in the NL

Any pitcher who comes in the game must face a minimum of 3 batters

7 inning games in double headers

Every extra inning begins with a runner on second.

I'll step out there and say I love every one of them.

DH in the NL:  I've been an advocate of that for years.  Even though the numbers don't bear it out so far in this shortened season, I think in the long run, another legit bat in the line up has to add more excitement to the game.  Honestly, I don't want to see your two worst batters in the 7 and 8 spots, and then a pitcher who is 2 for 47 come to the plate.

3 Batter Minimum: No brainer here.  Critics of the game and its snail's pace, have ripped the practice of bringing in a pitcher to face one batter.  Then doing it again, and again, and again.  It just brings the game to standstill.

7 inning double headers and the runner on second:  Baseball purists may have a legit gripe with putting a runner on 2nd to start an inning, but I'm fine with it.  I can live with that change to stop games from drawing out 5 1/2 hours til 2:00 in the morning.

Most of these rules are to speed the game up and add some excitement and hopefully attract a younger demographic.  I'd even consider implementing a pitch clock.  Get the damn sign and throw the ball. And Mr. Batter, get your ass in the box and hit.  I don't want to watch you step out after every pitch, undo both batting gloves and re-strap them, take three practice swings, hold your hand up to the ump for time while you dig back in....

Please opine.

I have never been a fan of the DH.  I like that the pitcher has to bat, I like the strategy of it, walking a guy to face a pitcher with 2 outs.

The other rules haven't bothered me.  I didn't expect like starting a runner at 2nd in extra innings.  Wondering if baseball needs to modify it's standings, so instead of just win/loss, go to a point system.  So even if you lose in extra inning, you still get a point - similar to hockey losing a game in an extra period or a shoot out.  So win gets you 3 points, extra inning loss gets you 1 point.

There's no other sport that I can think of where a team HAS to send their weakest link up to face the opposition.  The other team literally gets a freebie every 9th batter.

There are exceptions in that there's a handful of pitchers who can consistently put good wood on the ball.  (I said wood and ball in the same sentence.) But as a Braves fan, I can name very few who I would stop and watch with interest that something might happen.  And that spans back a long time. Tom Glavine and Greg Maddox could hit, along with Smoltz.  Tim Hudson could rake too.

BTW, every time I think about Hudson's stats at Auburn, it leaves me bumfuzzled.  1997 stats:

Pitching:  15-2  2.97 ERA  165 K's

Hitting: .396 average  18 HR  95 RBI

That's an okay season. Holy shit! I do agree having pitchers hit forces a manager to make more actual in game decisions other than when to go to the pen.  You start having to go to your bench and also decide who you want to save as a pinch hitter for the late innings.  Maybe that's why I'm against it, because we have Brian Snitker making those decisions.

I take back my "rake" analogy.  More like a whisk broom.  I don't know how his stats compare to other pitchers but he was in the .160's during his 9 year ATL career.  Rarely went deep (3) and averaged 3 or 4 RBI a year.

The thing I didn't take into account was that before Atlanta, he was in the AL for 6 years with the DH, so I imagine it was hard to adjust.  That goes along with another reason I'm not a fan of pitchers hitting.  Not only are they in the league solely for their arm, they only get a couple of plate appearances every 4-5 days.  That's tough as hell on the regulars.

yeah. I was lambasted by most of my fellow Braves fans over that take back in the off-season. I posted it somewhere on here too at some point. Sorry he just wasn’t worth that. Not when he was gonna be close to 40 at the end of that contract.

Who knows. But it won’t have anything to do with Donaldson.

most of the way there. Let’s see how the playoffs go to complete the story

Cards split a double dipper with Detroit.  Cubbies handle the Little Red Machine and the Bravos come back to top the boys from DC.

As for Donaldson, Ozuna has more than filled that void.  I wanted JD long term in the ATL, but like GH said, at that price on the back end of his career, it would have been like the Angels signing Pujols.

Wasn't just that we split a double header, we had a 3-1 lead in the top of the 7th, and our closer, Gallegos, left in the inning with a groin injury.

Could be bad with a ton of games on deck.

How would you like to be San Diego and have the 2nd best record in baseball and still be 2 games out for your division?

Took 3 of 4 from the Nats, then got on a bus and went up the road to Baltimore, where the Orioles administered a 14-1 anal raping.  Went in dry.

Playoffs will be interesting this year.  Some new faces scattered in with some old ones.  The Astros will somehow limp in and will probably set the record for hit batsmen in the LDS round.
Waiting for the Orioles to make it so they can face off against the Braves/Cards winner for the whole ball of wax.

There seems to be a lot of that crap happening.  18-3 in your game.  We got beat 14-1 the night before.  Scored 29 a week ago.  The Yank Me's were up 20-3 last night last time I saw it.

Here's what I think is happening.  I've heard critics say this many times, but last night was the first time I started to believe it.  I think I watched 9 fly ball outs in a row from the Braves. It's like they're coming out of their shoes trying to go yard on every swing.  And the announcers are right there with it.  Every call is, "Just missed that one."  "Got under it just a bit."

From the get the hell off my lawn department...whatever happened to your lead off man being the slap hitter who would get on any way possible and a threat to steal a base every time?  The two spot was the guy who could handle the stick (Mmmm....) and would find a way to get the lead off man in scoring position.  Then your 3, 4 and 5 hitters could drive the ball.

Our lead off hitter is Ronald Acuna'.  Yes, he's fast but he needs a chiropractor after every game just to get his spine back in place.

Could be Snags, or could be that shortened spring/summer training is hurting the pitchers?  We expected some sort of asskicking on the Cards because of their schedule and double headers, so I can at least explain it for them.  Thin staff.  I dunno.

I blame Buzz, to be honest.  He's got a voodoo doll for the Cards and Braves.

BTW, totally random hijack here.  You seemed a bit flustered last night.  Feathers ruffled, if I may. Pissed even.  I didn't ask on the bookfaces, but there's only 3 people here.  Did a board member personally single out your wife?

Yes.  At the monthly board meeting, he (an elected member of the school board) slammed my wife, who is teaching his child, saying that she's (my wife) not doing her job, and how she refused to engage with him (he's never called/email, but his wife has - and my wife has responded within an hour to her) and how his daughter is struggling (My wife has made a zoom video just for his daughter, who for some reason, will not click on the link) and it's all my wife's fault.

It can't be my lazy daughter's fault, so it has to be the teacher!  Isn't it great when those fools get a little bit of political power?

The union president called my wife this morning and said what he said was unacceptable, and that the union was now involved.  The school principal called my wife this morning before school, and the school super met with her right when she arrived this morning.

One of his points was his daughter was receiving "2.5 hours a day instruction" (so zoom calls) and it should be "5."  My wife clarified to me that Illinois said the 2.5 hours was strictly zoom calls, and the student was to have 2.5 hours of additional homework to get them to five.  So he's confused as to what the rule is, or he's being an asshole, but either way, incompetence or being a bully, should prohibit him from being an elected official.  He's clearly in over his head.

I posted on facebook hoping that some of our mutual friends would comment.

I don't know what incontinence has to do with anything.  Sounds like you're getting a bit personal here.

Srsly, it's just childish to use your position as an elected official to bring up your particular child's teacher. Leave the board out of it and schedule a parent/teacher conference and talk about what's going on.  But instead, you "tattle" to the board.

That's what pissed off Mrs AUJ the most, besides how everyone heard him say she's a bad teacher.  She worked in Atlanta off Bankhead highway, she can handle hostile parents, but you do it, without even attempting to schedule a one on one?  That makes you a fucking coward.  And the fact none of the other board members said "not appropriate" also pissed me off.  GEORGE IS GETTING UPSET.

Not exactly relevant, but my wife taught second grade for over 25 years.  Most of it was in the public school system.  She was as proactive a teacher as I've ever seen.  She got home and as soon as supper was done, she was grading papers and on the phone to parents, literally for hours each night.  If she thought there was a problem that a simple phone call couldn't fix, she demanded a parent/teacher conference, along with the child.  Unfortunately, the schools, kids and parents got so bad that during her last year, not one parent showed up.  Not even for school sponsored parent/teacher nights.

She spent the last 6 or 7 years in a private school where people actually gave a shit about their kids' education...and making sure the teacher had everything she needed.

On a baseball note, since we're about 80% through the regular season, we finally get to see what we paid $18 large for.  Cole Hamels takes the bump against the O's tonight.  I now they can't expect more than about 3 innings out of him.  We'll see.

How many teams will get in from each league?  8?  The top 2 from each division and 2 at large?

If that's the case, the Central should get 3 teams in...assuming nobody goes on a tear to end the regular season.  Looks like the Giants and whomever ends up 3rd in the Central will be the at-large teams.

Cardinals (27-26, .509)
Yesterday’s result: Lost 12-3 vs. Royals (https://www.mlb.com/cardinals/news/carlos-martinez-hurts-back-in-loss-to-kc)
Where they stand: The Cardinals and Reds trail the Cubs by 3 1/2 games in the NL Central, with St. Louis currently holding the No. 5 seed in the NL. The Cards and Reds are one game ahead of the Brewers for the division's second guaranteed playoff spot. One thing to keep in mind: Because of the extensive postponements the Cardinals had in August due to COVID-19, they are currently scheduled for 58 games. If either of those two additional postponed games, both against Detroit, end up needing to be made up to settle home-field advantage or who is in or out, they would be played on Monday. They will not be made up if the only thing left to settle is seeding that has no impact on home-field.

Reds (29-28, .509)
Yesterday’s result: Won 6-1 vs. Brewers (https://www.mlb.com/reds/news/trevor-bauer-intense-in-short-rest-win-vs-brewers)
Where they stand: The Reds are tied with the Cardinals for the NL Central's second guaranteed playoff spot, but the tiebreaker goes to St. Louis. Cincinnati currently occupies the eighth and final NL playoff spot, percentage points behind the No. 7 seed Giants.

Brewers (27-28, .491)
Yesterday’s result: Lost 6-1 vs. Reds (https://www.mlb.com/brewers/news/keston-hiura-adrian-houser-stumble-in-loss-to-reds)
Where they stand: The Brewers are a game behind the Cardinals and Reds for the division’s second guaranteed playoff spot, and one game behind the Giants for the eighth and final NL postseason spot.

Cards magic number down to 4 after last night's win.

In the AL, everyone had clinched at least a spot, except Houston, who have a magic number of 1.  AL Central and West titles still on the line, so seeding could change.

Toronto Blue Jays (8) at Tampa Bay Rays (1)
Cleveland Indians (7) at Minnesota Twins (2)
Houston Astros (6) at Oakland Athletics (3)
New York Yankees (5) at Chicago White Sox (4)

In the NL
San Francisco Giants (8) at Los Angeles Dodgers (1)
Cincinnati Reds (7) at Atlanta Braves (2)
Miami Marlins (6) at Chicago Cubs (3)
St. Louis Cardinals (5) at San Diego Padres (4)

Marlins magic number for wildcard is 2, Reds also 3 for wildcard.  Braves, Dodgers, Padres, and Cubs have all clinched a playoff spot.

Huge double header today vs the Brewers for the Redbirds.

Yep.  If he had any defense in his game at all, he'd be firmly in the mix for MVP.

Jar, you saw him last year.  Now that he plays for the ATL, I've now noticed that's one quirky bastard.  I'd swear the man has Tourette's.  From the time he leaves the on deck circle and all through his at-bats, he's doing the funky chicken.

AL
Bluejays vs Devil Rays
Indians vs Yankees
Twins vs Houston
As vs White Sox

NL
Dodgers vs Brewers
Padres vs Cardinals
Cubs vs Fish
Braves vs Reds

Jays/Rays winner will play the Tribe/Yanks winner in ALDS.  Twins/Houston vs As/Sox in the other ALDS

Dodgers/Brewers winner vs Padres/Cards in one NLDS, Cubs/Marlins and Braves/Reds in the other.

On the NL side, I'm going with Dodgers/Padres vs Cubs/Reds (sorry snags).  In the AL, Rays/Yanks and Twins/As.

Cards throw Kim vs Paddack in Game 1.  Waino, in maybe his last Cards game, in game 2, and Flaherty in game 3.

Not sure I'd wait until game 3 to throw Flaherty, I think he's the future ace, but Kim has had the numbers this year (3-0, 1.62 era), but his Ks/9 (5.5) and WHIP (1.02) don't give me warm fuzzies.

Yeah, ALDS between Rays and Yanks takes place in San Diego.  Astros play the winner of the As/ChiSox in LA.

NLDS between Cards/Padres and Dodgers/Brewers takes place at Ballpark in Arlington, while the Cubs/Fish and Braves/Reds takes place in Houston.

NLCS will take place in Arlington, while ALCS will take place in San Diego.

So basically, if the Cards or Braves win today, they go into a bubble.

Yeah, we'll put it up on the shelf beside the only other one in franchise history, 25 years ago.

Thanks man.  I never saw this coming.  I thought we'd have to "outscore" (DUH!) everyone. Our offense was tops in runs scored and second in HR's.  Our pitching is Max Fried and whoever we can find walking by the stadium who looks under the age of 30.  So true to form, they pitch 22 innings of shutout ball.  Sweet.  We can rest some arms and kick back and watch you guys now.

Good luck to the Cards/Cubbies.

I had a good one this morning.

The Fathers' bats came to life last night, but the reality is despite their wall banging, the Cards were matching them right down to the end.  That has to concern San Diego.  It's like we scored 11 but Goldmember is still jackin' bombs.  Jack Flaherty goes today for the Cards and it looks like the Padres will name a starter come game time, unless I missed it.  Flaherty hasn't been his bad ass self like he was this time last year, but he's still #3 in the league in strikeout percentage.

Cubs in a must win game against the Fish today.

Marlins:  Sixto Sanchez  3-2  3.46 ERA  33 SO

Cubs:  Yu Darvish  8-3  2.01  93 SO

Obviously, the Baby Bears are sending the man to the bump.  2.01 ERA is sick.  Sanchez is solid.  I watched him against the Braves the last week of the season.  The Cubs have obviously contracted a bad case of ATLatosis in that they have scored 11 total runs in their last 8 playoff games.  Their big boppers were like 1-12 in the first game.  That shit needs to change.  Time to get the sticks going.  Ross said he's starting Bote at second base as he's been ripping any and all heaters that come his way.  On another note, Starling Marte may try to play but will definitely be hindered at the plate with a fracture in his hand, finger or some bone in that general area.

War Cubbies.

(Hank Aaron told me) ‘Don’t dig in against Bob Gibson, he’ll knock you down. He’d knock down his own grandmother if she dared to challenge him. Don’t stare at him, don’t smile at him, don’t talk to him. He doesn’t like it. If you happen to hit a home run, don’t run too slow, don’t run too fast. If you happen to want to celebrate, get in the tunnel first. And if he hits you, don’t charge the mound, because he’s a Gold Glove boxer.’ I’m like, ‘Damn, what about my 17-game hitting streak?’ That was the night it ended.”

One of the best period. Def prob the greatest single season in modern history. His era numbers on some of those seasons will never be approached again. Maddux was the closest we will see to Bob.

I'll take the cheating Astros vs the Yanks in the ALCS and the Braves/Dodgers in the NLCS.

3 hit shutout for a 2-0 win.  I would have never in a million years predicted 3 shutouts in 4 games.  We're a pitching machine.

I kind of like these early games in the playoffs because all I can do is keep up with them.  If I'm watching, I'm suffering through every pitch and yelling at the TV, aka Brian Snitker.  I like winning a game and then sitting back and watch everyone else suffer.

America's Favorite Drive Thrus, Ranked

Who’s America’s favorite drive thru? FoodserviceResults studied consumer satisfaction across a range of metrics like speed, accuracy, and customer service. Taking all metrics into account, the winner is perhaps no surprise: Chick-fil-A gave the most satisfaction in every category except Menu Item Availability. While its lines may be long, there’s no denying Chick-fil-A is a step above when it comes to drive-thru service—and customers notice. in contrast, Popeyes finished dead last in all categories.

The Braves have hit a hot streak at exactly the right time.  Giving up one run to the Dojjers is next to impossible. And per usual, about the only way we can score is by those long balls that chicks dig so much.  Still, LA is the most loaded team in the game.

He hasn't pitched in 3 weeks and wasn't mentally prepared to do so on short notice. It being the pennant, what will be his mindset tonight? Dodgers have also ruled out Kershaw for game 3 as well, with Game 4 being a best case....meaning, at most the Bravos will only have to see him once. This will also probably force Roberts to pull May and Urias out of the bullpen for the playoffs and put them in the starting rotation....the bullpen - overnight - will suddenly look like a weak spot leaving the 2 who got shellacked last night in relief and Jansen (also gotten shellacked lately) as the main options.

Snitker realllllllly needs to rethink when he wants to use Tomlin again. I get wanting to save melancons arm some but he probably could have gotten out of the 9th in less than 10 pitches. I knew when albies committed the error that Bellinger was coming to the plate with piss n vinegar.

I know it’s a brand new park - and beautiful May I add - but why do the walls on all sides of this park not bounce a baseball? Other than a line drive to the outfield wall, the balls die once they hit any wall.

Game 5 if needed will end up being either a closer game or Freid/buelhler on short rest - which may also turn into a closer committee game.

Let me climb up on that soap box and rant some more. That game started at 5:05 yesterday AFTERNOON.  At 9:00 last NIGHT, they were just entering the 9th inning.  No wonder there's always talk about how to get fans back to the game, a younger demographic or whatever.  Well, there's the problem staring you in the face.

The best thing they've done is requiring any new pitcher to face a minimum of 3 batters.  That's a start.  But you have to put a pitch clock in play.  I was checking out some of the Rays and Stros the other day.  The pitcher looked in while the catcher went through 5 series of signs.  They couldn't get together so the pitcher stepped off.  He takes a heavy sigh, goes through all his routine, toes the rubber again and watches as the catcher goes through the same series of signs.  The batter gets frustrated and steps out.  The pitcher steps off.  They both go through their little routines.  The pitcher toes the rubber and looks in.  I thought, "I'd rather watch Blues Clues."  BTW, last night was an episode about Pirates and they had to find Blue's treasure...and....wait....

I probably watched less than half of that game last night.  I love baseball and love my Bravos.  But damn, I also have a life. Sort of.  Anyway, I'll get down off this box.  Somebody give me a hand, I'm getting old and it hurts my knees when I step down.

wait, what channel was Blues Clues on? I looked and looked and thought I saw every channel in the lineup but never saw that episode listed. Pirates and Treasure...boy oh boy, sounds like a real good one was on last.....I mean, anyway back to the game. Yeah, my thought exactly. I looked over at the wife when 9 cst/10 est hit the clock and said "in 5 mins this game will be 4 hours old and were just in the middle of the 9th". Thats unacceptable.

Well, Nuke's scared because his eyelids are jammed and his old man's here.  We need a live...is it a live rooster?  We need a live rooster to take the curse off Jose's glove and nobody seems to know what to get Millie or Jimmy for their wedding present.  We're dealing with a lot of shit.

I think we definitely have the momentum going into tonight.  Right after it was 15-0, we outscored them 3-0 over the final 6 innings.  Money!

Look for more of the same in tonight's game.  Bryce Wilson, he of 42 total innings of Major League experience, is climbing the bump for the Braves.  Some guy named Sammy Kershaw is going for the Dodgers.

Suddenly, the Stros and Rays have tightened sphincters.  Mine remains clamped tight facing the Dodgers.  Their bats went silent last night, but they also put up 22 runs in a 6 inning stretch before that.  Maybe the best thing besides winning was that Bryce Wilson gave most of the bullpen a rest.

Question:  I follow my club for the most part so I don't know how others manage.  Is it just Snitker or is everybody obsessed with limiting a starter to 5 or 6 innings?  Wilson pitched 6 complete, held it to a 1-1 tie, had given up only one hit and Snitker yanks him.  He's 22 years old.  I'm guessing he wasn't tired.  What would Wainright say to Schildt if he had a 1 hitter after 6 and was told, "Nice game, hit the showers."

As much as I agreed with you last night and still do to an extent, it would appear that they may use him for 2-3 innings Sat or Sunday if we get to the weekend and its needed. Reason being is today will be a Bullpen game for Green, Smith, Martin and Melancon - maybe even Wright (NO!) and Tomlin (God no!). They'll need a somewhat reliable fresh arm out of the pen for Fried Sat if it comes to that.

"Sorry, skipper, I couldn't hear you with my two world series rings plugged in my ears."

And I agree with the decision to pull your starter.  Game was well in hand, let the guys who get paid to do relief do their job.  If for some reason this goes 7 games (it won't) you want him available to pitch.

Going to popeyes for lunch, to get the bravo special - three piece white, spicy, with biscuit and red beans and rice, and one large sweet tea.

The only issue I have with that is he was yanked when it was still 1-1.  He was done and hanging on the dugout rail with his buds in a tie game.  The Braves just happened to explode in the bottom of the 6th, but his night was already over.  Braves lose last night and it's a completely different series at 2-2.

Snit could have easily sent him back out but he didn't. I see both of sides of this one now knowing that they may use him Sat/Sun if necessary. 4-5 relievers will get worn out tonight. Hopefully they get the W so that none of this matters.

Troof.  I'm just questioning his overall philosophy of taking his starters out so early.  Ear-regardless of how they're pitching, you rarely see a starter go past 5 innings.

if you'd actually watched, you'd see it wasn't a choke of Braves years of old. More of a ran out of gas situation against a much more powerful engine. Past Braves teams were the bigger engine that underachieved. Mark Bradley's writeup in the AJC yesterday was well put IMHO....and I usually don't care for him.

Whack, right to her knee cap.  Then she'll have to constantly drive to her right, and then teams will pick up on that and know to shade her to that side and then her scoring average drops by 4.6 ppg and boom, there goes a promising career.  All because you couldn't resist asking who could we get that's better.  That's all on you, man.  All on you.

What you've got to do is cut the hamstring on the back of his leg right at the bottom. He'll never play golf again, because his weight displacement goes back, all his weight is on his right foot, and he'll push everything off to the right. He'll never come through on anything. He'll quit the game.

You know she plays golf, too, right?  I've been trying to convince her that women's golf is where it's at.  You don't even have to be good to get a women's golf scholarship.  The local d2 school has girls on scholarship who average about 105-110.

Wow!  Definitely push that.  Plus, you can stay relatively injury free with golf.  Obviously joking about the knee thing, but if you cut the wrong way on the court, you could put a career in jeopardy in a heartbeat.  What's her handicap....I mean besides having a Cardinals fan for a dad.

She averaged about 115-120 on the 18 hole courses.  55-60 on the 9 hole.

She gets frustrated in golf, like we all do, because it's the first sport she has played where she isn't just naturally good at.  Although she goes to Top Golf and wacks it 200 yards.

No doubt it's the most frustrating game out there.  But, you can shoot 102 and still think about the 3 shots in that round where you put it on the green in regulation or made that long putt.  Keeps you coming back.

I also have a really good pre-round ritual you can use if there's a lot of water on the course.  It involves 3 candles, some baby oil and a sliver of cow dung.  A little messy but guarantees you won't sacrifice more than one sleeve of balls to the water Gods per round.  Very effective.

Bump on the biesbolz.  Theo Epstein steps down from the Cubs' President of Baseball Operations.  Good Buzz or Bad Buzz
Wait, I thought this guy is dead but didn't hang himself?  If he's dead, how in the hell is going to step down from anything?

He stepped down off the chair with a noose around his neck.

Too early to start a 2021 MLB B&M thread, unless it isn't.  But I have a question for the Buzzer.  With the unloading of Darvish to the Fathers, is the skuttlebutt true about the Baby Bears tearing it down Braves and Astros style? Truthfully, they have become a bit stagnant the last couple of years, but are they at the point of sell, sell, sell?  I hope not because that was a sick feeling for a couple of years with the only drama being the over/under on 100 losses.  Intel?

Looks like the Padres have gotten serious about the Series with the addition of Darvish and LHP Blake Snell from the Rays. Plus, they developed a real hate/hate relationship with the Dodgers last year, which could be interesting for 21'.

On the Braves front....a whole lotta' MEH!!!!  They added Charlie Morton.  Yaaaawwwwnnn.

It sure looks that way.  Word on the Bleachernation skreet is that they are still looking to unload Contreras as well.  That would leave them with a player/coach situation at catcher...

I feel a lot of bitching and maybe a little extra moaning in my 2021 future.  They may be really good by 2025...

So there's that.

Honestly would hate to see a sell off.  I have no idea what their payroll is and maybe that's the problem.  If you're not the Dodgers or Yankees, it's been a good recipe for future success given what Cleveland, The ATL and Astros have been doing in recent years.  And even a huge market/payroll team like Boston burned it all down last year.

If you have great prospects in your system and are getting some low priced, young talent in these trades, you can rebound pretty quickly.
