Newton, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's preseason player of the year, skipped Saturday's loss to Bethune Cookman to avoid burning a redshirt opportunity by playing in his fifth game, a source told The Undefeated (https://theundefeated.com/whhw/howard-qb-caylin-newton-wont-play-saturday-may-redshirt/). If he transfers, the star quarterback who is set to graduate in May will have two years of eligibility remaining and could play immediately at another program as a graduate.

â€œHe hasnâ€™t officially made up his mind yet,â€ the source said of Newton, per the report. â€œThis has caught everyone by surprise. All we know is that heâ€™s not playing this weekend.â€

As a sophomore last season, Newton tallied 3,133 yards of total offense and 26 touchdowns, earning the MEACâ€™s Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Newton, a three-star in the 2017 recruiting class, was rated as the 204th-best prospect in Georgia and 133rd-overall as an athlete, per the 247Sports Composite (https://247sports.com/player/caylin-newton-67427/). He signed with Hampton over offers from Savannah State, Kentucky Christian and Hampton.
