Pete Alonso earned more for Home Run Derby win than he will entire season

New York Mets rookie slugger Pete Alonso has hit 30 home runs in his All-Star campaign.

And on Monday night, he hit 23 to outlast worn-down Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the final round of the Home Run Derby (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/allstar/2019/07/08/home-run-derby-2019-live-updates-results/1676504001/). In doing so Alonso won a $1 million bonus, which just so happens to be nearly double the base salary of $555,000, the league minimum, he'll earn with the Mets this season.

The 24-year-old said he will donate (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2019/07/08/mlb-all-star-game-2019-pete-alonso-living-fantasy-during-mets-rookie-season/1677822001/) 5% of the winnings to the Wounded Warrior Project and 5% to the Tunnel to Towers.
Alonso is the second rookie to win the derby, following Aaron Judge in 2017. He's also the first Mets player to win the derby outright.
The first basemen has been one of the few positives for the struggling Mets in the first half, ranking top five in the National League in 14 offensive categories. He has a .280 average, 68 RBI and a 1.006 OPS.
“I’m living a fantasy right now," Alonso said (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2019/07/08/mlb-all-star-game-2019-pete-alonso-living-fantasy-during-mets-rookie-season/1677822001/). "I’m sure I sound like a broken record, but I feel like the luckiest guy in the world. I’m just so happy to be here.”

Guerrero hit 91 homers on the night, including a record 29 in the opening round (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/allstar/2019/07/08/home-run-derby-vladimir-guerrero-steals-show/1680111001/), and arguably stole the show (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/allstar/2019/07/09/vladimir-guerrero-jr-home-run-derby/1680471001/). But Guerrero eventually ran out of gas in the last round following an epic semifinal matchup against Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson that featured three tiebreakers.

It was bullshit honestly, should have been Gurrero or Pederson.

Gurrero was plain gassed after his semis.

Great fun to watch either way though, first time in a long time.

Ed Zachary. Vlad Lite was swinging out of his shoes every time.  Acuna Matada was incredibly impressive. 180 pounds and jacking some mammoth shots.  The most impressive thing was that he was blasting them to all parts of the park.  Never seen that much range.

Couldn't believe Pederson's consistency.  He'd get on a roll and dinger after dinger.  He'd call timeout and have 6.  A minute later, he'd have 20.

I found myself wanting Pederson to keep tying it up just to see who could outlast who.

I just hate it gassed Vlad, because I didn't like seeing that little worthless twat who would have lost every other round but the rounds he was in, flip his bat and preen like he did something.

First time I saw Alonso at bat he jacked one in deep left center on a good pitch from Teheran. The guy can't field like Pujols but that same kind of power is certainly present.
