Title: 2018-19 Coaching Carousel
Post by: wesfau2 on November 26, 2018, 09:20:57 AM
Mack Brown rumored to be the HC at UNC.

Will "retread" be the theme of this year's carousel?

Not a rumor any longer. The powers-that-be in Chapel Hill clearly had that wrapped up before they broke off Fedora.

Lots of places where Chip Lindsey could spread his wings...

As to the hire of Mack, does it portend an atmosphere where the PTB are going to be looking for stability and known quantities rather than trying to catch lighting in a bottle with an up-and-comer?

If Lindsey gets some interviews, I'd love to be a fly on the wall and hear what he has to say.

I expect you'd be disappointed.

When hiring, I generally pass on candidates that want to shit-talk their former employer.

These coaching interviews happen in a very small community and I doubt you hear anything scandalous.

Not looking for scandalous or shit talk at all.  If he's asked what happened against LSU in 17' and if he thought it was sound offensive strategy to run the ball up the middle 16 straight times on first down, does he say he just had a brain fart that day?  He's been here two years and there have been numerous head scratching offensive game plans and decisions, like running already injured players into the ground.  I'm more curious about the control issues.

The thing is, if he's being interviewed for an OC position, there's no doubt prospective employers will be pointing out specifics and asking him to explain himself.  If there truly were times where he had no say in anything, and I believe that to be the case, I don't expect him to needlessly fall on the grenade and protect Gus when he's trying to land his own gig.

Mack Watson Brown 3 years after retirement > Gus
Fixed it.

Here's something to gnaw on.

Doug Barfield got five years.  His record over those five was 29-25-1 with a 15-14-1 (.533 WP if you give him the tie, .500 WP without) record in the SEC.

Now let's look at gloomy gus. If we accept that his first season was an anomaly (and it was) he's 40-25 over the last five years, 21-19 in the SEC (.525 WP).  Where do the 11 extra wins come from?  Expanded schedule with luminaries like Alabama State, Jax State, teams we can't remember.

Barfield never got AU near the SEC title. Never beat Alabama. He did beat Georgia twice and tie them once in one of the gutsiest AU games I've ever seen.  Orange jerseys.  William Andrews inches short of a TD as the first half expired -- and if they'd had video replay back then AU wins that game over a Top 10 UGA squad.  We denied them the Sugar Bowl.

Gus isn't as bad as Barfield, but the situations are similar.  Bama running roughshod over the competition and the rulebook.  Georgia a barking nuisance and some pretty good teams.  A wealth of talent.  Barfield's Auburn teams had William Andrews, James Brooks, Joe Cribbs, Frank Warren, Byron Franklin, Reese McCall, Sedrick McIntyre, Freddie Smith, Edmund Nelson, Chester Willis, Clifford Toney...

You ask me to list Auburn's coaches in order of greatness?

Donahue
Dye
Jordan
Tuberville

As much shit as we like to give Bowden (yes, myself included), his teams were competitive every year other than 1998.  I would take 1993-1997 Bowden a hundred times over Gus...that in itself makes me sad.

Still, focus remained on Malzahn’s job status following the team’s 31-point loss to top-ranked Alabama to close the regular season. It was the most lopsided loss of Malzahn’s tenure at Auburn, and it dropped the Tigers to 6-13 against their three biggest rivals -- Alabama, Georgia and LSU -- over the last six seasons.

I wouldn't mind the 7:00 am critical analysis write-ups on Sunday morning.
Your opponents and rivals would hate you to the very core.
This might come as a shock but you have a penchant for name calling while taking jabs at the appearance and demeanor of others.
I'm cool with it but you're not everybody's cup of tea.

I can see it now.

Auburn reportedly hires Coach Hugh Freeze as OC, everyone is all happy and slapping hands. Then OSU hires him at the last minutes as their new HC. Leaving Auburn without a OC. Malzahn names Kodi Burns as OC...then hires Pat Nix as Co-OC/QB Coach. And we finish another season looking absolutely confused on offense.

Sounds good for Mack Brown.

On another note, I'm wondering if Chip Lindsey didn't get himself into the same situation he had under Gus.  Les Miles was so damn stubborn about 3 yards and a cloud of dust, is he going to let Lindsey do his thing or stick to his guns?

Based on nothing but nekkid speculation, it seems like Les is in Hawaiian-shirt mode.  Half-retired.  Get P5 money...at a place with no real expectations...and get fluffed by the local media.

Seems like a great opportunity to "re-invent" his style and go full CEO.  Let the kids grind...Uncle Les has another banquet to attend.

Neal Brown to WVU
Good hire IMO.  Troy is pretty big here in the Wiregrass with it being about 45 minutes north of here so we get a lot of Troy news.  Brown did things right..  He took over a program that had become stagnant under Larry Blakeney.  His first task, other than replenishing the talent there, was to create real fan interest through participation in a lot of events and really getting tailgating cranked up on campus.  To have an actual game day atmosphere.  He was readily available for all types of interviews and doing whatever he could to promote the program.

They struggled the first year, going 4-8.  Since then, he's gone 31-8 with 3 straight 10 or more win seasons and was 3 for 3 in bowl wins.  Beat LSU in Baton Rude in the process.  People have been saying he would have the most talented team yet coming back next year.

I'm still of the opinion that if AU had sent Gus packing, they should swing for the fences with a Stoops or Urban Meyer (I know he's not coming) type hire.  But had Neal Brown been considered, I wouldn't have a problem with that at all.  Let's just say I'd have been a little more optimistic than when they announced Malzahn was the new coach.

Wes puzzled and puzzled till his puzzler was sore.  Then Wes thought of something he hadn't before! Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store.  Maybe Christmas.....perhaps.....means a little bit more!

I'm pretty sure Zac is with one of the directional Louisiana schools.

Love the guy, but not sure he's ready (see also: Cadillac Williams).

This staff needs proven coach/recruit talent.

We are both wrong. He's at Houston with Dana Holgerson.

(https://uhcougars.com/coaches.aspx?rc=539&path=football)Auburn doesn't have a problem attracting talent. Doing anything with it is another story.

Currently a Seattle Seahawk, mostly playing special teams but they like him to run fast down the field on kickoffs.

Kodi Burns would make an outstanding DB coach, plus he's a first rate recruiter.
After all, it's a DB's job to disrupt a potential reception.

We can get anybody to teach a kid to catch.

So Greg Brown leaves Auburn for essentially the same job at Purdue.  Brown was making $400,500.00 on the The Planes and got a $25K bonus for staying on through Dec. 31st.  The coach he's replacing for the Boilermakers was making $320K.  Don't know what Brown will be making there but I don't imagine it will be a raise.

Since this past season, our OC left voluntarily to go do the same thing for less money at Kansas.  Our DB coach leaves voluntarily for the same position and probably less money at Purdue.  And Malzahn demotes one of the most successful RB coaches in the game and he leaves and takes the same position at Vanderbilt.  So far, we've replaced two of them with a 12 year old OC who won't be calling plays. (Until Malzahn goes bi-polar for the 15th time and gives it up) And a high school coach.

What are we down to with Gus' contract....just 6 more years?

I know McGriff had a couple of interviews with Taggart at FSU a few weeks ago.  Assuming nothing came out of that because I don't see any updates on staff changes.

BTW, if it said that in your twatters post, my interwebz getting device will not let me view it saying I have to turn off ad blockers and tracking protection.  Don't know how and don't want to.
