I need to wipe a MacBook, but know jack shit about their software.

(Seriously? Depending on the OS, there is probably a utility built in that will allow you to perform a sufficient data removal. I think it's as easy as opening the disk utilities menu and then picking the drive and level of destruction. That gets data.
