Title: The Newsroom
Post by: Token on June 29, 2012, 05:15:41 PM
Anyone catch this on HBO?  I hadn't read any reviews on the show, but caught the series premiere a few nights ago.  A lot going on in that show, but I was interested the entire hour.  It will be interesting to see if they can produce the show without a political slant.

The underlying messages/lessons will be very liberal, as it's Aaron Sorkin, but the writing on its face probably won't be.  One of the first things they introduced about the main character (played by Jeff Daniels) is that he is known for his tendency not to make politically biased statements, or define himself as being part of any one party.

Seemed like a pretty good show to me.  I'm looking forward to seeing the next episode.

I was impressed by Jeff Daniels.  I guess he has some serious roles in his career, but I always think Harry Dunne when I see him.  And you're right, it appears the show will focus on NOT being slanted one way or the other, but I wonder if they will be able to keep it that way.

Sorkin + HBO means they won't keep it's in the middle for long.

I just found the thread on this show; three episodes in and I'm still enjoying it; I've always liked Jeff Daniels as an actor (except the monumentally juvenile "Dumb and Dumber" movie) and the character he plays in this program is exceptional; along with several other characters in the show like Sam Waterston and Emily Mortimer who plays the executive producer.  I'm impressed so far (much to my surprise).

I haven't watched it, been tempted.  Not a fan of the liberal fucking news period, not sure I would want to watch a show about it.

If anything it's insightful to see how liberals "think" if I can use that term very loosely.  Apart from that I just take it con grano salis and enjoy a well-written, adult-oriented tv show for a change.  I'm not a political fan of Sorkin but he does a top-notch job with this show (so far...I reserve the right to change my mind later on).

I will say this regarding "liberal fucking news" I did burst out in laughter (that was definitely unintended by the writer) when (in episode 3) the main character was rattling-off the names of "reputable" newsmen...the list went something like this..."'Murrow, Winchell, Huntley, Brinkley, Cronkite, Reasoner, Schieffer, and Rather'"...extra credit goes to the person who can identify the one name on that list that made me guffaw...

So far, they've taken shots at the tea party and a few republicans about a topic regarding Obama's trip to India.  But honestly, it's nothing that I disagree with to a point.  I'm certain we did elect some unqualified people into offices in the last mid-term, but only because the voters are so fed up with the democratic party.

As for the show, I enjoy it.  Jeff Daniels is doing a fantastic job with the lead character, and I absolutely love his campaign to "civilize".  I've wanted to say exactly what he said in the last episode to sooo many people.

Your mouth - it is very dirty and quite whorish at the moment.

It's like I don't know you anymore.

They did a good job.  They absolutely used the show to blast the tea party, but they also touched on a few things I agree with.  Made a huge point about the debt ceiling and also called most voters stupid for not understanding a damn thing or carrying about important matters, which I also agreed with.

But for the entertainment value, they did a damn good job with the show and I'll be anticipating season 2.  Loved Jeff Daniels in this.

But now, it's time for Dexter and Homeland.  Great television is about to begin!!

I tried to watch this.

Bored out of my mind.

I also no longer care much for Olivia Munn.  She should have stayed where she was on the G4.  She sucks.

It's more of a struggle not to kill others.

Don't have the menace or presence of Tony.

One of my favorite scenes is the one where he forced the guy in the restaurant to remove his cap just by invading his space and glaring down at him.

And then he sends the punk a drink.

I'd have to punch him out.
