Title: Random Beer Rant Because A Friend Was Raving About It
Post by: Townhallsavoy on March 29, 2012, 09:57:38 PM
I don't drink Abita Strawberry or Sweetwater Blue.  I don't want pumpkin flavored ale or raspberry, banana, or apple.

I don't drink those beers because I am fucking man and I don't need fruit punch squirted into my lager for me to enjoy the taste.

This country needs more chest hair.

Sounds like a wine cooler. I bet Snaggle would love it.

Any of you tried the Guiness Black?  I drank a lot of Guiness on St. Patty's day, but not the Black.

I don't care for it if it's overdone, and too sweet, but I like Abita Strawberry.

And Purple Haze is delicious. It's raspberry infused.

Beers with Weskie last week and he suggested his "Go to" brew of choice.  Sweetwater IPA on draft.

Some people just never get out of the "widespread panic, phish, Zack Galafinakakjsasakkasas college guy" act.

And you are 100% correct. The Germans and their ancestors are weeping all over the Purity Law because of those "beers".

Well now, some very traditional beers are made with fruit and there's nothing wrong with it (Lambic, Saison, even Pumpkin Ale's are traditional back hundreds of years).  And some beers have a distinct fruit/vegetable taste without the actual addition of fruit (Hefeweizen often tastes of banana, Strong Dark Ale from Belgium often has a plum flavor to it, some Ale's have an apple flavor).  I just don't like the shoehorning of fruit in a non traditional style.  But as for the purity laws, there are tons of traditional beers that don't fit in in with the purity law.

I predicted this exact post when I saw your name pop up here.

I'll give you credit for jumping into your new city with both fucking feet.  Please, though, never move to Tuscaloosa.

Somewhat true.....

But Pumpkin Ales and Hefe's are a far cry from a Chocolate Oatmeal Wheat Stout or a Strawberry Banana Lime Malt Liquor "Beer". St Pauli Girl is a good simple lager I like. Paulaner is also a good one.

If you want beer get a beer.  If you want Bartles and James get that.  A light "flavoring" for aromatics is acceptable, but if the beer starts to get sweet or tastes of fruit, not just smell lightly of it, it's not beer anymore IMHO.

The aromatics should be mostly natural and definitely not part of the marketing strategy.

Here's a top ten of best fruit beers according to some effeminate drinker:

1. Samuel Smith’s Organic Raspberry – Samuel Smith Brewing
2. Sweetwater Blue – Sweetwater Brewing
3. St-Ambroise Apricot Wheat Ale- McAuslan Brewing
4. Raspberry Imperial Stout - Weyerbacher Brewing
5. #9 - Magic Hat Brewing
6. Black & Blue - Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
7. Frambozen Raspberry Brown Ale  - New Belgium
8. Wild Raspberry Ale - Great Divide Brewing
9. UFO Raspberry Hefeweizen - Harpoon Brewery
10. Samuel Smiths Organic Strawberry Ale, Samuel Smith Brewery

And the site's accompanying picture:

Covington is another New Orleans brand that makes a good strawberry beer. I like Abita's better.

I'm with THS on this.

I'm not advocating Leinenkugel's or Woodchuck Hard Cider. Or God Forbid any "Malternative" (that doesn't even belong in a discussion about beer).

But I'm on team "Man should not be afraid of fruit as an ingredient in his beer".

Partaking in a Samuel Smith's India Ale.

I am a fan of this brewery. Will definitely check their other offerings in the future.

FWIW, all beer regardless of flavor is nasty.

This thread is like a debate over the best tasting dog turd.  Do you prefer it if Fido has eaten a mango before he shits?  No! Be a man, eat straight dogmeal turds or nothing.

Any beers that you find better/worse on draft?  The other day, Weskie turned me on to Sweetwater IPA on draft.  A mighty fine product.  Bought a six this weekend and it didn't even taste like the same beer.  Most times, I find draft to be better but not in the case of Landshark.  Sorry if that's blasphemy to some but Shark is a smooth Lager IMO.  But on draft....don't care for it at all.

Was in the Wally Marks yesterday picking up some Conecuh for the afternoon grillings. I cut through the beer aisle to head to the check out counter, and wouldn't you know it - saw an older black dude picking up a 4 bagger of B&J (whatever flavor red is). He was taking that shit to the register like it was the last pack ever made and he wanted the world to know that HE had gotten it. It took every effort to supress the hefty guffaw that was building up inside. Dude was proud of his 'red' malt liquor beverage.

To each his own I guess.  Not liking beer at all is more acceptable than liking kool-aid beer I guess.  Sometimes, only an ice cold beer will do.  Hot summer day, after cutting grass...or with a great steak for instance.

Agreed.  What's weird is once I start or have eaten, beer is out.  I can polish off several and not get full.  I'll still be hungry and ready to chow down.  But afterward, beer just bloats the hell out of me.  Gotta' switch gears.

I generally prefer draft and usually when I am at a place that has an overwhelming beer selection I just narrow it down to what's on draft.  Draft is especially better on beer that comes in green or clear bottles as that stuff can get light struck (skunky) if it hasn't been handled right.  When you see Newcastle Brown (clear bottles) stored in a glass front cooler stay away from that stuff.  That goes for Heineken and Old Speckled Hen as well.

Also speaking as an accused beer snob (I'm not though, if somebody offers me a free PBR or Natty Light and I don't have anything else handy you better believe I'm drinking that shit) I prefer cans over bottles.  Now that Yuengling is available in cans it has become my go to beer to keep on hand around the house.

It just doesn't taste good to me at all.  None of it does. Can't stand the taste of any beer I've ever tried (and i've tried it a ton).

I did find a house brew once when I was in Vermont or Maine or somewhere up there.  All the place had was beer so I asked for something that wasn't bitter and had some substance to it (a little thickness).  She brought me something that I liked, but it was brewed there and nowhere else as far as I know.  Can't even remember the name of it.  Something like Springbok Mudflap.

If I absolutely have to drink a beer the only way I can choke it down is if it's almost flash frozen cold.  Like 20 degrees cold.  On the verge of turning into ice.   Otherwise?  It tastes like a gorilla pissed in a bottle to me.  I can take a sip or two and then I throw it away.

FWIW,  don't like the taste of ANY alcohol except vodka.

Hate brandy, sherry and cognac.  The smell of bourbon or scotch makes me want to throw up.  No way in hell I could drink any of that.  Rum tastes like pinestraw to me.  Tequila reminds me of squirrel shit.   I just don't like any of it.

Vodka?  I can drink that.  Just by itself.  Or with Dr. Pepper.  Or Mt. Dew.  Or in a milkshake (especially the gay vanilla or whipped cream kind).

Makes sense since good vodka isn't really supposed to have any aroma or flavor of its own.
