Title: XBox question
Post by: DnATL on November 22, 2011, 01:55:36 PM
Is the 250GB XBox worth $100 more than the 4GB?  What would you save on it that would cause you to need that space?  Seems to me you could get the 4GB version, and add an external hard drive - or would that be slow access?

It's for boys age 10 & 12 (no Sandusky)

I would go ahead and drop the extra C note.  Gonna be less problems in the long run.
They are gonna want to save some games on the hard drive so the cd is not constantly spinning.

They are buying it themselves with what they have earned & saved from neighborhood grass cutting, etc. (no Sandusky)  So, funds are limited, and a hundred bucks is significant.  They may get some federal fatherly matching funds if the extra space is worth it.  So you're saying you use all that extra space to load the games directly into the player's memory, and avoid the disc-read errors, scratching discs, and wear-and-tear on the disc motor?

Yep, and the higher grade X-Boxes seem to run into less problems.  I.e. Red Circle of death.

Most games when loaded onto the hard drive will take up about 6 gigs of space.  Trust me even with not loading games on the hd 4 gigs is not much space.  Pops best come off with some matching funds.  or send them to PSU for the weekend.

I got the RCoD on my first Xbox when the original came out roughly a decade ago. Happened after playing a war game on it after 3 days. Called MS and they told me to send it to them and they would fix for free. They sent it back after about 3 weeks and I havent had an issue with it or my Xbox 360 since.

Is it the Xbox 360 "Slim" that has the 4GB drive?  If so, you may want to consider buying a larger Xbox 360 Original HD for it (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Microsoft-120GB-Hard-Drive-Xbox-360-Black-X812646-001-Used-/250938272842?pt=Video_Games_Accessories&hash=item3a6d162c4a) and doing this:

The ad that I see on their website looks like it's the Slim model.  It basically looks like the old regular Xbox 360, except the middle of the console is slightly narrower, and the narrow portion is closer to the bottom.  The "regular" Xbox had a more curved design, with the narrowest portion in the center.

I don't think Xbox sells the "regular" models anymore, e.g. the Arcade, Pro, and Elite models.  So any new model you buy is going to be the Slim model; it's just not expressly referred to as "Slim," due to it being the only design now.

This website indicates that the particular bundle you're looking at is the Slim model:

Thanks!

That is a damn good deal though.  I'd keep the hard drive thing in mind, as you should be able to easily upgrade the storage space (if you find later that you need it) for about $30-$40 if you keep a look out on Ebay.

Wish I had read this thread sooner...we went to the Wall-Marks an hour or so before the sale was to start and found they had given out the last voucher over an hour before that.  Got to see a couple of cool cat fights though, so the trip wasn't completely wasted.

We ended up ordering the same setup from microsoft directly online yesterday for the same price.  The only thing different was no gift card.

Found this interesting....

The company says it sold more than 960,000 consoles in the U.S. during the week of Black Friday, of which more than 800,000 were sold within a period of 24 hours, according to internal sales data. Additionally, more than 750,000 Kinect for Xbox 360 sensors were sold in the U.S. – standalone and bundled.

That's one of the MANY battles they win against Sony. The whole hacking acct numbers thing isn't too cool either. Probably a feature that Sony should have left off the PS3.

The A/V cables are high definition, technically.  They display at 480p.  The HDMI cable simply allows you to display at 720p and 1080p.

If your eyesight's bad, then you won't notice much of a difference.  Even with good eyesight, the difference is noticeable, but not vagina-wettening awesome.

720p and 1080p are most noticeably different from 480p when watching sports, but you'll notice some difference while playing games as well.  It's basically up to you, but I just wouldn't go into it expecting any extreme difference.

Don't you have some LED light bulbs to install?

He's right.  If you are Mr McGoo you will not notice a difference.

You will see a big difference.  I went from the shitty 420p cable to the other about three years ago and the difference was night and day on COD.

Trent Richardson reads gooder than me.

Go ahead and get the HDMI.  If you already had an Xbox hooked up and were using the yellow cable, I was going to tell you to try out the red, green, and blue cables.  The yellow cable is a standard connection, whereas the red, green, and blue will give you low-level, 480p HD.  You'd probably be satisfied with the 480p, but if you simply just want to get the most out of it, then get the HDMI cable.

People's testimony can be misleading for a variety of reasons.  Person A says 1080 is not much different than 720.  Person A doesn't realize that he has 1080i, and due to the nature of how interlaced signals are displayed, his "actual" resolution as the human eye sees it is the equivalent of 720p.

Person A says 480p is the same as 720p (or 720p vs. 1080p); Person B says, "FUCK YOU! I noticed a major difference."  Neither person realizes that the distance at which you watch television, as well as the size of the television, makes a huge difference in whether you can discern the HD quality changes in each.  Being further back from the TV, you'll notice less of a difference in HD between 480p, 720p, and 1080p, generally speaking.  Sitting closer to the TV results in a person noticing more of the HD difference, again, depending on the size of the TV and exactly how "close" the viewer is.  Most studies show that, for your average sized flat panel TV in your average sized family room, most people sit too far away from the TV to realistically be able to notice the difference between 720p and 1080p.

There are too many variables that go into the differences between the three HD signals (including the capabilities of your TV, type of TV, what device is sending what type of signal to the TV, etc.) to simply state that one is clearly better than the other.  But, just to simplify things, they have made three basic categories for HD, and tout that the higher the number, the better the picture.

Generally true, yes, but a variety of things that you do or don't do will affect how "mother fucking awesome holy shit balls!" the difference is.

Like I said, go into the purchase expecting a slight change, because if you buy the cable thinking that it will definitely be a "night and day" difference, or otherwise will bring you to a sexual climax of epic proportions, then you may very well disappoint yourself.

HDMI makes a big difference.  But different brands of HDMI do not make a squat's worth of difference despite what the douche bag at Best Buy will tell you.  So I reccomend these.

This is pertinent info for the dashboard update that should hit in the next week or so.

The final product is sleeker than the developer build we saw last, which was already a cut above the old dash. The flat, Metro squares put the console in a Microsoft uniform while providing better access to content in a more appealing style. Navigation is quicker, snappier, more enjoyable, and downright futuristic feeling when paired with a Kinect sensor and voice integration. The new dash even seemed to boot our old Xbox 360 Elite up a few seconds faster than the old guard, clocking in 22 seconds from "on" to home screen as opposed to the previous Dashboard's 25 second clock time. By the time the new dash caught up to the old, the Kinect sensor had finished its warm up and was ready to take commands.

We would have liked to see motion or voice control dig a little deeper -- there are still some corners of the Xbox that need a controller to be navigated properly, namely the settings page, Avatar editor, and a handful of prompt screens. But, other than these minor shortcomings, the Dashboard's Metro overhaul succeeds in revamping the console interface into a more intuitive, user-friendly and appealing environment. It is, without a doubt, the biggest and best change since NXE, and we won't miss the old "new experience" one bit.

Xbox Live profiles are now universally accessible from the cloud. Players behind the Xbox Live Gold paywall also have access to cloud based storage for save games -- a boon for gamers who migrate between consoles, or upgraded to slimmer Xbox, for various reasons. The Xbox's cloud storage feature needs to be activated through the console's settings page before it can be used -- our system offered us 511MB of cloud space after we switched it on. Uploading data to the cloud was as easy as saving games to a memory card, we effortlessly traded data with the Xbox hard drive using the console's data management tools.

Naturally, cloud saved games won't be available if you aren't connected to the internet, but a sudden disconnection won't ruin your day. We pulled our console's ethernet connection out midway through a session of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but the Xbox had no trouble loading or saving our game, and didn't default back to its hard drive until we exited to the Dashboard. When we plugged the console back in, the saved games we created while offline were right there, in the cloud, seemingly stored locally in the interim. Half a gig of cloud storage isn't a ton of space (heck, our Skyrim save data totals over 1.3GB in of itself), but we can definitely dig the convenience of accessing saves remotely without lugging around a memory card. We didn't get the chance to access our Xbox Live profile remotely via the cloud, but as we understand, it's as simple as signing in at home -- the old "gamertag recovery" feature is dead and gone.

This is the cable that comes with the Xbox.

At least, when I bought my Pro model in 2008 (middle of the road model), it came with this cable.  That's why I asked whether your cables had red, blue, and green component connectors.

These component connectors are analog connectors.  Basically, you're taking a digital signal and converting it so that it is sent through to the TV as an analog signal.  Doing this results in some quality loss.

I can't find anywhere online what type of HD quality you'd be getting with these component cables, though I've always heard from various techies that it will likely be between 480p and 720p.  You won't get true HD video to the tune of 1080p quality unless you get the digital HDMI cable, which looks like this:

Little Buzzs' XBox came on the UPS truck last night, and I had to hide it quickly...so I didn't get a chance to open the box yet.  Is there a special HDMI cable or adapter that you have to use with it, or can I just use a standard HDMI cable?  I still have a few that I ordered dirt cheap from overstock.com last year and I had just planned to use one of them, but I would hate for him to wake up on Christmas morning and not be able to enjoy his Kinect Adventures in stunning 1080p.
