Title: Officially done with McDonalds...
Post by: Kaos on November 03, 2011, 03:41:57 PM
Forget the health issues.  Indifferent and incompetent service has finally cracked my McD's egg.

In a major hurry and it's pouring rain today so I figured I'd slide through the drive through and make it quick.

As always seems to be the case with me, the car that cuts in front of me is also headed to the drive through.  That happens nine times out of ten lately. I'm behind a car nine miles from the nearest drive through and the son of a bitch will go right in ahead of me every time.

Simple order.  Double cheese (hold the cheese) combo with a sweet tea.  Pull up and pay.  The car in front of me then proceeds to sit at the window for 7 minutes and 43 seconds.  It was actually longer than that because I didn't pull out the stopwatch and start timing until the wait seemed inordinately long.

They finally pull off and I'm aggravated having sat for about ten minutes so far as rain roars around me.

First attempt:  I get two fish sandwiches and a sprite.  When I inform the gold-toothed cashier that this is not what I ordered, her response was to squint at some screen above her head and reply "yuh huh it eeeyuus."   So I patiently explain what it was that I ordered, she squints again, tells me to hold on and shuts the window.  A while later she reappears and says "you gon' havva pull up."

I pull up.

Second attempt (stopwatch running, it comes more than six minutes after the initial effort):  I get a Big Mac, fries and a coke.  Unaware of the Big Mac, I begin to pull off figuring I can take the coke and just get the hell away from this clusterfuck.  For the record?  I HATE Big Macs.  If I wanted salad dressing and lettuce, I'd order a salad.  Open the bag.  FUCK.  It's a Big Mac.  I'm not eating that shit.  It's also pouring rain and I'm not getting out.  So I go back to the drivethrough, skip the order box and cut in front at the window.

I'm no longer patient.  I tell them I don't want the Big Mac, I want my double cheese and I'll even take the fucking cheese at this point.  She tells me "you gon' havva pull up."

I'm not fucking pulling up.

So I tell her to fuck off.  Take the coke and give me the GODDAM sweet tea I ordered and as far as I'm concerned they can stick whatever assorted sandwich and fries they're going to hand me this time up their fucking ASS.

They outta sweet tea.  So pull up.  Window closed.

I wasted the coke on the drive through window, threw the big mac at the front door.  Ate the fries.

Good for you.
Almost as much fun as I had at the Burger King drive thru when the person told me they were out of burgers.

Speaking of fast food fries, what in the hell was Wendy's thinking?  Not a fan of their "New" fries.

I'm pretty big on hurling food back through drive through windows.  Particularly when it comes to tomatoes.

Hardees in Demopolis.  Told her THREE times I didn't want a tomato on my sandwich.  I knew the mommy part wasn't paying attention.  Tomatoes.  Drove back around and flung it through the window.

Hardees in Tuscaloosa.  Threw tomatoes on the cash register in the store.

Willy T's in Tuscaloosa.  Used a knife to stab a tomato to the wall of the restaurant.  Sent it back once because of tomatoes.  It came back with them again.

Sonic in Columbus MS: Poured milkshake all over the order screen after several botched attempts at getting what I wanted and a rude ass waitress cut up about it.

There are more.

Really hope you are wearing an Alabama hat while acting like an 8 year old who didn't get his way.  It's a tomato, take it off.

Semi-related: Don't let your curiosity and the hype of the elusive McRib get the best of you. It's barely edible. I assumed as much, but the "try anything once" in me made the poor decision to order one.

Spicy McChicken as a backup FTW.

Not a huge fast food eater.  Mostly by choice trying to keep the weight under 417.  But, I'm also not a big variety kind of guy.  I like what I like in just about every restaurant, fast food or not and I rarely say, "I think I'll try..."

Mickey D's:  Quarter Pounder w/cheese and large fries

Wendy's: Double w/cheese, mayo, ketchup mustard

Burger King:  I don't eat there.  That King guy freaks me out.

Speaking of fries, I don't eat at Captain D's much but when I do, for some reason their fries are just brilliant,

Wrong answer.  I would hurl one at you as well.

I don't want the tomato on my sandwich P.E.R.I.O.D.   If I did, I would order it with one and then take it off.  I don't want the juice from the fucking thing leaked on my bread.  I don't want the shitty little seeds sticking to my burger.  I don't want the discoloration it leaves on my cheese.  I fucking hate tomatoes.  Hate. Hate. Hate. Hate. Hate. Hate. Hate. Hate. Hate tomatoes.   If one is on my plate I'm not eating anything on it.  The plate goes back.

Because I hate them so much and I realize that my complete and total revulsion could be misconstrued as merely a mild dislike and a willingness to remove the offending fucking thing on my own, I am EXTREMELY specific when I order.  I repeat it several times to make sure they got it.

"Ok, that's a Hardee chicken sandwich, fries and a tea?"
Yes, but I do not want tomatoes on the sandwich.
"Ok. A fry chicken sandwich combo?"
Yes, but no tomato please, can you repeat that back to me?
"Fry chicken sandswich combo."
Right. No tomato.
"No tomato"

If the sandwich has a tomato on it, I'm not going to be amused in the least.

And I'm not taking the fucking thing off.  The sandwich is completely and utterly ruined if the motherfucking thing has ever thought about being on it.

I reserve my hurling for those who need it.  For those who combine shitty service with an indifferent attitude and a smart mouth.

The Willy T's incident?  Fucking hog ass bitch said the same thing you did.  I sent it back because I didn't want the fucking tomato.  It came back with the tomato on there again.  She made the mistake of saying "well, you can just take it off if it bothers you THAT much."

Fuck her.  She can take it off the shit-bleeding wall.

The McRib was way better 10 years ago. That's really where it got the reputation of being a good sandwich.

I had a similar incident with a Waffle House last month. 3 of us called in a to-go order while at work. Mine was a Texas patty melt plate with hashbrowns covered and chunked. A co-worker picked it up. Mine turned out to be a regular hamburger, on a hamburger bun, with burned hashbrowns and nothing on them. I call down there to let them know what's up (Politely, mind you. I don't believe in acting like a child over fast food.) and I get a "Well, I will let the cook know. Sorry. *click*"

Calling back to ask them to cook my shit right serves no purpose at this point, because now they know it is for the police department since somebody came and picked it up already. They're just going to spit in it and drop it on the floor. I politely complained on their website instead. The manager of the region called me back about a week later and profusely apologized, and promptly sent a $10 off coupon in the mail. I love Waffle House, so that will come in handy.

Awful House used to be my pregame meal growing up.  Whether it was football, baseball, basketball...hell, I was even into tennis for several years and entered some local tournaments...it had to be "steak", eggs and hashbrowns.  Put a couple of pieces of toast on there dripping in butter and half a bottle of ketchup......I think I was 10-1 with that meal.  They were out of "steak" one day.

Yeah but the minimum wage jockey behind the counter doesn't care about the tomato on the wall.  That's relatively easy to clean up and they're not buying the tomatoes.  But the people who make the food are usually also cleaning the bathrooms.  So what you do is go take a dump in the floor and stick the tomato on top.  If you really want to make your point you can try writing "No Tomatoes" with your own excrement, just remember to use hand sanitizer before you leave.

So apparently no one else ITT has a problem with Wendy's new fries?

I can't recall ordering any since they changed them.  I never was a huge fan of their fries anyway.  When they were first cranking up, they had the big, thick cut fries.  They did get much better over the years as long as they were salty.

Speaking of salty fries. You can't properly salt the spuds AFTER you get to the table.  Appropriate fry saltage must be done as soon as it leaves the 2 week old grease, so that it will stick to them and become one with the potato.  It's just too late if you have to go back up to the condiment counter and grab a few packs.

Don't eat Wendy's.  I stick to fast food places that have other acceptable options besides burgers (largely for the reason that K quit on McD's; too many things can go wrong with a burger).  I tend to stick to Chick-fil-a, Arby's, Jack's, Zaxby's, Subway, etc.  Chick-fil-a being best in terms of food+service.  Last time we went for lunch from work the place was packed, still got my food out fresh, hot, and correct and the manager offered to throw my trash away for me so I wouldn't have to.

When the dillhole behind the counter is paying for my food then they can have a say in how its prepared and if I should peel off the tomato. Until then get it right or piss off.

Double Baconator or a Double stack with cheese are the only acceptable foods they have.  Spicy chicken sandwich is pure shit compared to a Chick-fil-a Spicy Chicken Sandwich with a slice of pepperjack and Chick-fil-a sauce.   <3

Oh, no doubt.  Chick-fil-a is God Tier fast food.  We quit going to the Arby's on University.  It's sad when you have to tell the cashier which button is the pic of the "Big Montana".   I miss Back Yard Burger.   5 Guys is my go to spot for a burger now.

Shittng in the floor requires planning and prep.

The hurling of food is an immediate hulkian response.  It's the inner asshole exploding through the serene veneer.

I've tried it both ways.  I've done the complaint gig.  Feel like a wussy douche taking that route.

If I contact a manager it's usually because I got GOOD service.  They don't hear much of that.  They only hear from whining bitch pussies like the goat fucking skeeze.

Don't ask much.  Competent service and a little effort.  I tolerate "takeyaohdah" and food thrust out the window without a word of acknowledgement.  I tolerate mistakes if they make even a half ass effort at fixing it.

Combine a fucked up order with hostile behavior?  I'm going to do something unfortunate.

I don't count it as fast food, but I don't put it in the same category as Cheeburger Cheeburger or Red Robin either.  It's really a tweener.  I miss Cheeburger in Providence.  Damn the reality company and the high rent.  Now I have to drive all the way out to Whitesburg.

Good rule to live by.....don't eat anything cooked by minimum wage workers that isn't prepared in front of you.

But if you have to, you better just take off what you didn't want or just get your money back.  If you take it back and complain about it not being right, you're going to get a dickslap burger in return.  It may not have a tomato, but you can damn sure bet it'll have a mushroom stamp.

I don't even know where one is near here. The one in Foley closed years ago, and the one in Pensacola is now closed as well. The closest ones now are in Fort Walton Beach and Biloxi.

Their burgers are awesome. $3-4 more expensive than BK or McD's, but you knew where that extra money went when you ate it.

I've learned to go inside to make an order. I admit I talk with a Southern Drawl and it isn't comprehended by most people especially those that work at fast food restaurants.   Chic Fil A is the bomb as far as FF goes.  I try and hit a Jacks when I am in North Alabama, they don't exist in this part of the state.  I do like Wendy's new fries, it is probably my 2nd favorite behind MCd's.  If I am in a fast food pinch I usually go through the Steak N Shake Drive thru it is cheaper than MD and it is 3x better.  Side note I went to Momma G's on Airport in Mobile this weekend and 2 employees were wearing Bama shit and they had bama shit hanging on the wall.  Only Auburn stuff was a schedule poster.

Im a bit of a fast food snob. I dont go to the "scum of the ghetto working behind the counter and doesnt give 2 shits about the customer" type of place USUALLY. This is why I like Chick Fil A. Everytime Ive been they bend over backwards (go ahead make a joke here) and are almost too polite. Its like a training school for mormons or something, as if the Osmonds all work there. I laugh about that, but the customer service is grade A. Subway is good most of the time due to their assembly line nature but Ive had a few bad experiences there, but its the exception not the rule.

Im with K, Fuck McD's and the ghetto employees that dont even have an IQ of 43. BK, Wendys, Krystal and KFC arent far behind them. Every other time I go to KFC to get some original recipe, they are out and it will be 20 mins for a new batch... You are out???? of Chicken????? Ive literally stormed out of there on many occasions.

Anyone ever been to Los Pollos Hermanos? I hear the chicken is top shelf.

I have to admit that the BK here in Huntsville that is located near Research Park on University is actually fast for how crowded it is, they get your order right 9 times out of 10 and they are friendly.  I just don't do BK all that much.   All this talk is making me want a Chik-fil-a Spicy Chicken though.  :)

Subway is solid.  Hard to screw it up when you're standing right over the process going, "That...some of those...a few of those...wait, a little more of that...."

Hardees is one place that I grew up on as a kid.  There was one 2 blocks from the house and the "Big Twin" was a staple of my childhood diet. Helped me to become the morbidly obese dreg on society I am today.  However, they lost me a long time ago.  I've never been able to keep up with what's on the menu.  They add some thickburger, carb free, bowl of eggs something or other every few months.  Had some great commercials over the last couple of years, though.

Little Buzz is still infatuated with McDonalds, but I couldn't loathe a fast food restaurant any more if I tried.  There are only 2 things that I can tolerate from there...the regular hamburger with no onions and the caramel frappe.
7 times out of 10  I will still get onions on the burger from the one closest to us, even though I say "no onions" at least 3 times while ordering.  The only thing their fries are good for is scraping onions from the soybean patty.

It was years before I tired a Hardees burger.   I was convinced by some co-workers to go their for lunch one day a few years back and was pleasantly surprised how good it was.   IMO, the best fastfood burger and on the same level as Back Yard.   Not 5 guys level, but 5 guys isn't really fast food.

Five Guys?  Seriously?  I've tried it a couple of times and was not impressed one bit.  Terrible burger.  Garbage on a bun.

Best burgers ever:

1. Hawaiian Burger at Niffers in Auburn.  Awesome, awesome concoction.
2. Eastern Shore Burger at Panini Pete's in Fairhope.  Onion confit and herbed goat cheese. Damn fine.
3. Whiskey River BBQ Burger at Red Robin.
4. Mushroom Swiss Burger at Old 27 Grill in Daphne/Fairhope.
5. Jesse James Sourdough Burger at Butch Cassidy's in Mobile

But better than all?  Patty Melt at Town Square Diner in Carrollton, AL.  Thick, heavily buttered and toasted bread. Grease, grease, grease, greasy cheese, greasy onions and a big side of tots.   Three arteries just shut down thinking about it, but it was worth it.

Also good:
Regular Jack's Hamburger, the old 15-cent variety.

Hardee's Frisco Burger.  Great tasting fast food.

Goal Post hamburger at Goal Post in Anniston (is it still there?  The neon guy kicking the neon football is one of my favorite childhood images)

What you did there.  I see it.  That was bad.

One note on a relatively obscure eatery.  In Destin at Destin Commons, they had a "Dave's Dog" in the middle courtyard area.  Free standing kiosk place with a grill. Big ass beefy sausage dogs on buttered Texas Toast type buns. An absolute must for mini-snags every trip.  Place closed down. Gone, kaput.  We stood there in the courtyard for about an hour in disbelief.

Don't recall if Wes was a fan of teh Dave's, having worked in that complex, but he can testify as to it popularity.  At least with mini-snags.

The best 2 Burgers I have ever had were at Spinnaker in Panama City and Fudruckers in Columbus. I know the latter is a chain. We also have a 5 guys, Red Robin and Backyard (although it just closed) nearby and I thought Fudruckers was way better. The way they let you do your condiments is the shizzle.

I can't even recall what the 5 Guys burger tastes like.  All I remember is the 8 pounds of fries they stuffed in the bag.  Hellz to the yes.

My wife and I hit one up on the way home from our 1st anniversary in Panama City Beach a few years back. I had always heard good things about 5 Guys, but we were both underwhelmed really. The fries were decent, but the burgers weren't anything special at all.

The Goal Post is still around in Anniston. My Pops lives in Anniston now, the neon sign is still kicking as of my last visit in September.

I always had BBQ there as a kid. The thing I remember most is the buttered, toasted hamburger buns they serve alongside the bbq plate. Simple yet tasty.

BTW, Firefly in PCB is pretty damn awesome food.

They've got the best fast food fries.

IF they're fully cooked!  Usually they think you're in such a hurry you want soggy, greasy assed potato sticks.

5 Guys is good, just way too damned expensive for what you get.

Best burger: Green Valley Drugs, Hoover, AL.  R&J's in Marion, AL.

Another good one: Baha Burger (Now Riff Burer) in Hoover near 5 Guys.  Great Onion Rings too.

Best real fast food: Whataburger.  Cooked to order every time.  They don't pull up an order of fries early because they think you're in a hurry.  Hot and Crisp EVERY MOTHER FUCKING TIME.  Do you have to wait 3 minutes?  Yes, but well worth it.  Overall, the food is fast food quality, but of the highest fast food quality there is, and consistent.   Every other place is hit and miss, and you run the risk of being pissed off by completely disinterested employees there to get a check and that consider customers an inconvenience.

Exception: Chic-fil-a.  If it's what you want, it's right.  Waffle fries suck, but oh well.  They missed badly on the spicy chicken ( was hoping for better, Wendy's hit a bullseye).  But if you want a decent chicken sandwich served quickly, it's good.  Look behind the counter at most and you'll discover why.

By the way...

McDonalds are all about management.  There are a few here and there that deliver "McDonald's" consistently with decent service.   In the small town I work in, if I want variety, and am too lazy to bring  my lunch, McDonalds is something I eat at least once a week.  I have to be honest and say they get it right 90% of the time, or better.  Their fuck ups are largely insignificant, few and far between.   And this McDonald's is manned by the dumbest of the dumb for the most part.

We have a place called Smashburger - I know there are others here in Houston, but not sure if they are in other states as well.  That is a DAMN good burger and they have five different kind of fries - sweet potato and four different seasoned regular fries. Kind of expensive but it's actually worth it.  Their chicken sandwich is supposed to be awesome too.

Chik Fil A is so good because they generally hired college bound students.  They can earn money for college if they work enough hours and make good grades. Lots of scholarship money too.  Makes a huge difference. Lots of turnover in employees but worth it for the outstanding customer service and giving back to the community.

Regarding previous.  My daughter has a peanut allergy so when we first found out we asked at all the food joints we stopped at if they used peanut oil.  One old lady at some Mom and Pop place told us "Lawwd no, honey!  We use laawwd."  She really pronounced Lord and Lard the same.  I wasn't sure at first if she might have been cooking in the blood of Christ or rendered pig fat but it was the best fried chicken and catfish I had had in a long time.

You don't like tomato?  Or just not on a Chicken Sandwich?

No tomato on anything.  Won't eat anything a tomato has touched unless it's been made into ketchup.

What I hate is places like Ruby Tuesday where they go "it's ok, the tomato is on the side."

No, that's NOT okay.  Did you think I was ambivalent about the tomato when I said I didn't want it?

Did you think I'd go to the trouble of telling you if having it floating near my food was acceptable?  I don't want it on the side, I don't want it near my plate, I don't want it on the table, in a bowl and I'd be okay if the fucking things weren't even in the kitchen when my food is being prepared.

So I tell them specifically.  I don't want it on the side, or on my plate and I don't want to even see it anywhere around my table.  About half the time here it comes anyway.  I've had several waitresses go "oh, you said no tomato" and then try to scrape the fucking offending, oozing thing off the bread.

Big mistake. Depending on my mood I can be such a hardass about tomatoes that I won't eat anything on that plate and ask them to take it off my bill.  And I don't want anything else they have because I know it will be spit on or fucked with in some way.  That occasionally results in a pissed off manager who doesn't understand why they can't "make it right."

I know this is basically a fast food thread, but I just got back from lunch and one of my favorite, good for you and tasty as hell meals.  Restaurant opened here a couple of years back called...of all things...Red Elephant.  It may be a chain but I'd never heard of it until they started building it here.  Of course the obvious first impression was, how frickin' stupid to build a resaurant with a Crimpsum Tahd theme.  I will never set foot in the place.  Turned out to be nothing of the sort.  Has nothing to do with foosballz or any school.

Saw two buddies walking out and stopped to talk.  What'dja have?  What else, blackened mahi and steamed veggies.  Under $10.00 for the meal. I eat there at least once a week and I NEVER order anything else.  Damn fine place.

Pardon the hijack to sit down food.  Continue.....

That's why I like Chick Fil A. They put a big red "NO PICKLES" sticker on the sandwich wrapper alerting you that your sandwich is embalmed cucumber free.

And the proper way to eat a Chick Fil A is with mayo and Chick Fil A sauce for the waffle fries.

Mmmm....waffle fries.  As long as...timely salted.  See post above about proper fry saltage.  Must be immediate after removal from hot grease for adequate stickage.  Unsalted waffle fries are like cardboard.  Properly salted waffle fries...heaven.

Waffle fries are good straight out of the oil.  As stated, salted timely.  Problem is they have too much surface area and dissipate heat too quickly, and can't be eaten fast enough.   And don't even think about trying to transport them to go, or you'll have soggy potatoes when you arrive.

Maybe.  I usually just threw random amounts of money at them in a rush to get to a seat and take my first bite.

How good is your team going to be next year without Carp and Puljos?

I am done with BK as of Tuesday night.  Xmas shopping, which I loathe, but it's for the kiddo, so it was good this time.  It's getting late, we decide that he needs some nugsets and size (nuggets and fries in 20 month old).  We go to BK.  Quick, easy, get some nuggets, fries a chicken sandwich, softdrinks, should be simple, no?

Cashier has attitude from the get go, "What do you want?" There was no "May I take your order please".  Which brings me to another point.  What the hell is wrong with teenagers?  I hate them.  I haven't been around one in the past several years that didn't make me want to choke the shit out of them within minutes......anyhow.....As I am waiting on my food, the cashier chick pulls out her cell and starts chatting it up while taking the next persons order.  As I walk up to grab a straw, the lady is bitching about her order being wrong.

No milk in the kids meal, small fries and drink instead of medium,  fries instead of onion rings on the other order, mayo on on both sandwiches, one was supposed to be without.   Whatever, I can deal with it, besides the kid is smiling and happy, so all is good.  Then I needed to go to the bathroom.  No sign saying it was out of order, open the door and there is shit/piss water from an overflowing toilet in the floor.  I almost walked in on it.  No one gave a shit either.  Done with them.

Not sure who said it (either JR or Kaos maybe), but if you want to see the diff in BK/McDs/Krystal and Chick Fil A, just look around or behind the counter. Watch how they operate, their attitudes, etc. You will see stark differences in many ways I won't get into it any further.

We stopped at a Checkers or Rally's once.  Years ago and I have forgotten which it was.  That ever happen to you?  :)

Anyways, I was the only one that didn't order fries.  Everyone else asked me when we sat down why.  I told them to go look on the floor by the fry cooker.  They were in a pan on the floor with all sorts of shit, Coke, grease, hair, sweat from the cooks...etc...etc...etc... falling in the pan.  I caught it out of the corner of my eye when I was about to order.  "Cheeseburger and Dr. Pepper please!"

Had a buddy have a similar experience at 5 Guys in Jones Valley.  He came in after the lunch rush when everyone in the kitchen was cleaning up.  He saw his burger on the griddle and the guy came by and started cleaning the hood over the griddle and spraying some type of cleaner on the hood and overspraying on the food.  He called the manager over and asked him if he saw a problem.  The manager apologized profusely, got them started on a new burger after cleaning the griddle, and comped his lunch.  Right way to handle it.

It was I.  My brother and I walked in to one not long ago, and saw a rare sight behind the counter...seriously first time EVER...we both looked at each other and said "Holy Shit" at the same time.  Kinda shocked they've never been sued or called out by the media.

Another experience, positive.  I was at the McDonald's across from Elmwood Cemetery.  All locals working there.  Talk black gentleman is the manager, and he's standing watch, and helping move food.  It was very busy.  The cashiers were polite, smiled, and said "May I take your order sir?" and got it right.   Manager would occasionally make some correction if they didn't do something just so, even if minor.    Food came out hot and right, with little wait for the amount of business.  It was clean, napkins and straws stocked, if some fool left their stuff on a table like they were in a full service place, it was cleaned and wiped down in minutes by a kid apparently assigned to the lobby area full time to clean.  It was so smooth and pleasant I took the time to tell the manager that it was the most  polite, clean and efficient McDonald's I'd ever seen.  He thanked me and took a minute to talk to me about training the kids to understand their role in the service industry, and that he wouldn't have kids that didn't get it.

Starkville McDonalds, 1996

I was at the counter.  Woman in the drivethrough orders a 20-piece McNugget.

Window clerk grabs the box and runs into one of the other workers.  McNuggets spray everywhere.  She picks them up from the floor, the counter and a shelf.  Puts them back in the box.  Adds two more as a bonus.

Hands it right out the window to the unsuspecting driver.

Turns to me:  "Can I takeya odah?"

No thanks.

Side note:
Never ask me what we did to pizzas during the one month or so I worked at a Pizza Hut in the 1980s.   Suffice it to say I didn't eat at a Pizza Hut for nearly 15 years after that.   Still choose something else whenever possible.

No Steak 'n Shake fans?

I like it, but the closet one to me is always packed at lunch time and you can't get in until around 1:00PM.  I am usually hungry at 11 and don't want to wait that long.  Every once in a while we will leave at 10:30 and beat the rush, but it's not often.

Just got back from 5Guys.  The burger is what it is.  Just a good burger.  Agree with JR it's overpriced, but they help you out on the fries.

Bacon Cheeseburger, mayo, lettuce, mustard, tomato, onion, Jalapenos, A-1 and pickles.  Reg order of Cajun Fries and a sweet tea.  I am stuffed.

We have a McDonalds close by that is the same way.   Depends on which manager is on duty though.  One really doesn't care and it's shitty, ,cold, wrong and dirty.  The other takes pride in his job and the place is spotless, the kids are well mannered, the food is right and it's hot.  Not tasty, b/c I don't really like anything there other than the sweet tea, chocolate shake and fries, but it will do in a pinch.   Most of the time it also depends on the location.

Take Huntsville for example.  Lots of people in Huntsville with lots of choices for lunch.  Get it right, do a good job and people will be back.  Fuck it up and well, there are tons of other places to eat.  Then look at Athens, about 10% the size of  Huntsville.  There aren't many places to eat.  They get it right and do a good job, gravy.  They fuck it up, no big deal b/c you will get tired of the other places really fast and come back sooner or later anyways.

One of my good friends owns the Atlanta Bread Co. here.  The location is in a building where NOTHING has ever worked.  I can think of at least 7 restaurants that have come and gone in that location.  The reason he's been open 9 years now is simple, service.  He demands it and openly preaches to his employees within earshot of the customers.  If there's a slow time at the counter, quite often he'll gather 3-4 of his employees up and have a "teaching moment" with them.  Simple stuff, but they pay attention.  He's also quick to compliment them.

Mello Mushroom tried it's hand in Dothan a few years back.  The service was so universally bad, it quickly started failing.  It wasn't just one or two instances.  People were excited about it coming, but everyone seemed to have the same shitty experience.  45 minute waits for food.  Employees standing around, laughing, talking on cell phones.  Incredible how obvious the bad service was.  My buddy was asked to come in and revive it but it was way too far gone.  I started going back when he went over there because I knew it would be good.  It was.  But, by then the word was out.

Location means ALMOST everything.  However, it can be overcome.  Milo's in Vestavia, the old location, was such a place.  Over my 30 years of memory, it had been over a dozen restaurants, all failed.  It didn't have a traffic light or dedicated turn lane.  I don't recall when Milo's came in there, but it was in the late 80s/early 90s.  When I was a cop there, I worked traffic as an extra job.  Help people get in and out quicker.  The manager at the time was a first class asshole, and a slave driver, but he got those burgers and fries out in a fucking hurry.  The drivethru would be wrapped around the building and spilling out on to Hwy 31, yet people would wait because they didn't really have to wait long, and it was ALWAYs hot and right.

One day, after my lunch gig, I went in to get paid, and  have my free lunch.  Jimmy, the manager is dressing down one of the employees.  "That "extra" quarter of a meat patty we put on burgers?  It's not FRIGGIN' EXTRA...it's what we do!  When we put a bag of fries in the to go bag...that "extra" tong load of fries we throw in on top?  It's NOT EXTRA...IT'S WHAT WE DO...YOU DO WHAT WE DO, OR YOU DO WHAT YOU DO SOMEWHERE ELSE,  GOT IT?"   When Jimmy quit, buisiness declined noticeably.  I bet that new location in the new building grosses 75% of what the old place did with Jimmy.

Management is everything.  It even trumps food, unless the food isn't edible.

I have been to a few places that had subpar service that I would go back to for the food.  First place that comes to mind is Interstate Barbecue in Memphis.  I had heard about the place for years, while passing through the wife and I stopped by.  Took forever, waitress was borderline rude, drinks never got refilled, but once the bbq hit the table it was all worth it.  Especially the bbq spaghetti.

It's so ironic we're having this discussion about service.  Just got back from Subway.  Two girls behind the counter and no one else in the entire place.  Ordered my usual chicken sandwich and wanted green peppers on it.  They both started laughing and said that was the one thing they hadn't put out and were about to go chop some up.

One of them tells the other girl, "I'll run chop those up and you give him his complimentary blow job while he waits."

"We're very sorry, sir. If you'll just come around here, I'll get right on that blow job.  Swallow or no swallow?"

See, it's all about customer service.
