Title: Small batch bourbons
Post by: MarkChand on October 19, 2011, 01:02:51 AM
I just finished a trip to Lewis-ville Kentucky. I was able to sample several local bourbons at the hotel bar. The bartender was quite the bourbon connoisseur so he suggested
several great sippin' whiskeys along with a local package store carrying regional spirits. I picked upa few bottles of bourbs that aren't available in my area. I'll have to sample each and report back my thoughts. If you guys are every in the Louisville area hit up the Brown Hotel downtown, great hotel with a super bar downstairs.

Do let us know.  Would be curious.  Also, I don't know what part you are from, but do yourself a favor and pick you up a bottle of Elijah Craig 18 yr Single Barrel.  You will not be disappointed.

I'll keep you guys posted as I sample each. I'm from the Montgomery area but currently live in Columbia,SC. The local package stores offer up a pretty good variety of bourbons but nor quite at the level that I found in KY. I had the Elijah Craig 12yr while I was here and it was very nice. Nice light amber color with oaky and almondy notes. I'm sure the 18 yr gains a little more complexity, I'll see if it's available back home. The Booker's single barrel is kickin my ass right now, 128 proof is no joke! Pretty smooth for that strength though.

I know some on here will rave about Bookers, and don't get me wrong, it's like you said, smooth for that strength, but it's expensive.  It cost me about $3.50 to $3.75 a shot out of a 750ml bottle and I can drink Eagle Rare or Makers Mark (booth smooth, enjoyable bourbons) for around $1.50 to $1.75 a shot out of a 750ml bottle.

The Craig 18 year is expensive as well.   I am a budget drinker.  I want the best bang for my buck, that is why I drink so much Eagle Rare and Makers Mark.

Basil is a damn fine drink, one of my favorites. It is probably the smoothest bourbon I've tasted so far. Back in South Carolina a bottle of Basil is $57, the store we went to in Kentucky had it for $40. I started to pull the trigger but I wanted to get a few bottles that I cant get back home.

Also, on the Elijah Craig 18, I got a bottle of that a few weeks ago at a privately owned lick her store.  It was about $28.00 and the owner said he had reduced it to get the only bottle he had off his shelf.  I asked him WTF because this is smooth stuff.  He said he ordered it because he loved it himself but apparently none of the burrbinz drinkers that frequented his store knew about it.

It was $48.00 at the store I go to.  Probably less in the ABC store but that's way out of my way to go get my drink on.

Evan used to be the burrbinz of choice for a long time.  Decent taste...mixes well with coke product....and didn't kill the wallet.

If you guys would use a little judgement and buy whiskey not made in the US, you wouldn't have to sift through 90% riff raff for diamonds in the rough and overpay for it. Just saying....the American whiskey market is saturated with a lot of crap forcing the consumer to look hard for anything decent. Most is very young stuff. The minimum aging on a non-US whiskey, meaning Canada, Scotland, Ireland - is much higher than the US minimum. They also tend to be made with better ingredients (corn vs malt, barley) and quality. Its an entirely different process. Its like looking at the plant that makes a Ferrari vs the plant that makes the Chrysler Sebring.

I didn't have the stomach to break the seal on one of the new bottles last night. The Booker's from the previous evening was still weighing heavy on my stomach and intestinal track all day yesterday. I'll break one out tonight and report back.

Scotch fucking sucks.  Jameson is the only Irish whiskey worth drinking.

I dont care for Johnny Walker much but Glen Fiddich is decent. Most of it is 8 years by standard. They have some 18 and 24 yr stuff like Jameson. Believe it or not, Crown is one of the better whiskeys for the price. I have some Crown Reserve yet to be cracked at the house.

Have you ever tried Red Breast, Powers or Michael Collins? All better than Jameson to me. And I love Jameson.

Those whiskeys are made the way they are supposed to be made. Not cheapskating it with fucking corn. :poke poke:

I keed though. We'll have to exchange a few glasses at a game one day AUT1.

Gotdamn, everyone know good whiskey is made with at least 51% corn.  God intended it to be made in Kentucky, everyone else is just pretenders.

I have tried Michael Collins, and Bushmills, it's not bad, I still like Jameson a lot better.  Not a Walker, Fiddich, Regal, fan.  If Scotch was any good, they wouldn't have to use old used bourbon barrels to age it in.  :)

Not much on the Canadian Blends either.  I do enjoy a shot of cold Crown from time to time and I do enjoy a 7&7 as well, but not to often.

TN Whiskey: Only Dickel no.12 is worth drinking to me, and I am also not much on the Rye's but for a few.

I am just a Burbbinz kind of guy.  If I do manage to get to a game this year, I will take you up on that offer for a drink.

Broke the seal on Noah's Mill: 12 year old 114.3 proof burb.

Tried to tackle this beast neat, bad call. Intense oakiness and burn like a hot oak ember on your tongue. The peppery fire from the alcohol kicked like a 3-legged ninja all the way down. I applied a thin coat of vagasil to my tender area and dropped 2 ice cubes into my glass. Completely different drink. The flavors really opened up, nice sweetness with a hint of vanilla, some tobacco notes also. The alcohol burn relaxed quite a bit too. I'm working on glass #2 right now.

So last night, I picked up a bottle of Basil Hayden. Upon opening the bottle, I immediately detected a hint of cinnamon and polmegranite.  It poured up in the Auburn stadium cup a deep golden brown and seemed to take on a more oreganoey aroma. As I added the coke product, the color turned a more chocolatey doo doo brown, but lightened as the ice cubes kerplunked in.  I shook the cup lightly and was pleasantly surprised by a fizzy, sort of bubbly popping, crackling noise.  Of course, the added coke product produced the wafting scent of a young school boys soiled undergarments.  The first sip started smooth but then exploded into a cornucopia of carbonationey meat marinades.  The finish elicited fond memories of afternoon showers with the football team.

I'd have to give it a solid B+

I have all but stopped buying it unless I'm somewhere other than the high priced likker store on the way home. It's run by a friend of mine and I think you saw a pic of the "Help".  Knob is frickin' $48.00 there.  Down at the beach, I can get the same bottle for $32.00 - $36.00.  Been hitting a lot of Woodford lately.  Sweet stuff.

Coke product may be the missing ingredien............wait, what the fuck am I saying?

Now see, $32-$36 is more like it.  I can't find it that cheap here.  More around $40.  At that price the Makers Mark and the Eagle rare at $26-$30 just seem to pull me in, every once in a while I am strong and hit a bottle of Basil Haydens or Woodford.   God how I love those two.  It's unhealthy, it really is, but I digress.  If I could find teh KC that cheap, it would be a staple.

Yes, I saw a picture of the help.  Love lickher stores like that.

Much to my dismay, she left to pursue other career opportunities.  Damn fine woman, she was.  I did grab some Basil last night.  I was wrong earlier as it was $44.00.  Still, I have to be in the mood to splurge before I eclipse the $40.00 mark for whiskey drinks.

Not withstanding the vagina jokes, any wine drinkers on board?  I am and usually start the night with a glass before or during supper. It took many years of experimenting before I landed on a type that I like.  Just wasn't in to wine but on occasion, would try something different when I didn't feel like anything heavy.  Was down in Destin several years back and tried a Chardonnay that made me go, that's it.  That's what I've been looking for.  Then I started trying to find Chardonnays with similar tastes and have really gotten into them.

If it's over $35 then 9 times out of 10 I am not buying unless I know that only myself will be partaking.   I never share my top quality with folks unless they are "special guest".   Ex.  My neighbor comes to my house, I offer him the house bourbon, if it's someone that I don't particularly like, he gets offered "cooking bourbon".  If it's someone new or someone I haven't seen in a while, then I will go to the top shelf...........and the new person better mind his fucking manners or he will soon be demoted to something lesser.

I have rules dammit! And no alligators!

Jack Black not really that often but I have bought it at times. Not really bad at all in my opinion but usually if I go that route I'll get the Craig, its cheaper. Funny thing is I originally bought the Craig because I wanted to try something different and it had a cool bottle. Wonderful surprise inside. As for the Evans, yeah I like it.

By the way, thats 46 thank you.

$40 is my threshold for pain too when it comes to buying a bottle. If I spend more than that I get that "You're fuckin' drunk and you spent too much money" look from the skirt. Most of the stores keep handles of the good stuff on sale right around the $38-$40 range. I'm still working my way through the handle of Maker's I got at the beginning of the season. It tends to last a little longer when I mix it with my coke product of choice, Sprite Zero.

Apple Pie, 1/2 gallon of Apple Cider, 1/2 gallon of Apple Juice, pour in a stock pot add about 6 to 10 cinnamon sticks, bring it to a boil, when it starts to boil add a 750ml bottle of Everclear and remove from the heat and stir it up real good.   Strain to get the trash created from the cinnamon sticks, pour back into the bottles and let it rest in the fridge for a couple of days.  Shit taste delicious, a lot like an apple pie, hence the name, but be careful, you can't taste the Everclear and it will get you in shitloads of trouble if you let it get out of hand and make you wonder why you woke up in a chair on the patio at 6AM as you are still dizzy and sick <----- speaks from experience.

Next day I stopped by my lick her store and had the little vixen hold up a bottle of Maker's. Isent it to him with the same caption.

Then I deleted.

Picked up my second bottle of Jefferson's in the last couple of weeks.  $33.00 at the Lick Her store I go to.  Probably $25.00 at an ABC.  I have a new entry into my top 5.  Very impressed.

Yes, I know, I have to qualify my list as being those that play well with Coke product.  Have no idea about over teh cubes but I can't imagine it not being impressive to those that love the burn.

I'm still alive, just spent a week a rippin' and a tearin' across the volunteer state for work.

Still working my way through the 3 bottles.

Noah's Mill- still my favorite. Relatively smooth at 114.3 proof. I would buy it anytime I find it.

Rowan's Creek- Noah's little brother, they are from the same distillery. My second favorite. It's a nice, sweet boubon. Reminds me of Basil with a little more fire at 100 proof.

Michter's US1: Meh, decent whiskey, but not up to the price. It's a more bitter bourbon, I can definitely detect sour notes in it. Reminds me of Knobb with a heavier price tag. Not on my try again list.

Went to my lick her store and decided on a bottle of Eagle Rare to get me through the weekend.  The owner gives me a bottle of some brand of corn whisky, free.  He said they had ordered a case to see how it sold but no one had touched it yet, so he asked me to try out a bottle.  I said "Some brand" because I honestly don't recall and I don't want to know.  I tried a sip straight....I mixed it with delicious coke product....I believe I might just bring the unused portion (3/4 of the bottle) back to him and cuss his ass out for asking me to try it.

If it's not made in KY, with at least 51% corn and aged in charred oak barrels, then it sucks.

Hell, it's so good that the Scotch and Irish have to buy old bourbon barrels to help it get some bourbon in it.

They actually started using corn here because the immigrants were as poor as a jaybird and corn was the only cheap, available grain in the area. It was makeshift...and inferior, just like it is today. Suck it AUT1!! Oh, and Duane Allman is a homo! Ok, ok I went too far.

Scotland - circa: A long time ago

"This whiskey that we made not using corn tastes god awful!"
"Hey!  Maybe if we set fire to the peat bog under it people won't notice!"
"Great idea!"

circa: 2 weeks later

"Hmmm....still taste like shitake!"
"Hey!  Maybe if we buy some used bourbon barrels from America and put our whiskey in it people won't notice!"
"Great id....What the fudge is America?"
"Just go with it man!"

circa: 10 years later

"Hmmmm...  This still tastes like shitake!"
"Hey!  Maybe if we put a fancy name on it like Single Malt and charge people $50 bucks a bottle, they'll think it's good and buy it anyway."
"Brilliant!!!"

So it is that time again.  I am having a co-worker who is headed to hotlanta this weekend make a run for me. He stops at a place over there called Total Wine or something like that.  Getting a 1.75 ML bottle of Makers, .750 of Buffalo Trace, .750 of Elijah Craig 12 year 94 and I told him to get me a liter of George Dickel #12 since it was cheap and the holidays are coming up.   I need some nasty TN shit to give to visitors.

Damn, and it just seemed like not too long ago I bought up a bunch of bourbon.   :(

My strategic bourbon reserve is tapped out as of last night so I have to make a shopping trip also. My wife and I each had a Basil last night polishing off the bottle. For my second drink I had to lower myself to drinking freakin Bushmill's Irish whiskey that has been hiding at the back of my liquor cabinet for 10 years now.

I'm wanting to try a few new things this time. I've never had the Buffalo Trace, any good?

Other suggestions besides Rebel Yell and Fightin Cock?

Finally decided to treat myself to a bottle of Elijah Craig 12 year. I must say this is a damn fine bourbon! The local lick-her store had it on sale for $27.99(reg $32.99), not sure how that compares price wise to your loal markets but I may have to pick up another one before the sale ends.

I spotted another bottle, Old Whiskey River, that was on sale too but I didn't bite. It had a Wille Nelson guitar pick hanging from the bottleneck. I guess ole Wille is a fan, anyone had this?

There was also a massive display of Crown 750ml bottles on sale for $19.99. I may have to get one of those since I am the suxxor at picking freakin' bowl games...not looking like I'll get a free bottle this year.

PS Snag, please to be sharing pictures of the hot lick her store chick, my favorite store only hires the old heffers

No travel for me except last Saturday to Monkeytown. My buddy and me exchanged our usual.  He got Crown and I got Woodford.  One thing that I noticed was several of the gifts I got centered around lick her.  Two people gave me wine bottle openers.  I got 2 bottles of wine and one big bottle of Woodford.  Not complaining but I think it kind of says something about what people view as being my interests.  Hey, Snags is an alcoholic...he's easy to buy for.

TN whiskey is not that good.

If burrbinzz wasn't king then the Irish and Scotts wouldn't need their leftover barrels to get some of the bourbon in their product to make it drinkable.

That sounds like a nice marketing catch phase for Bourbon makers. Too bad that ain't why they buy them.

They do buy and use the barrells from Kentucky for Scotch and Irish Whiskey but its only to meet demand in those countries. Their whiskey is typically aged longer on average. Realtive to the size of those 2 countries, the amount of whiskey made there is astronomical. Bourbon, by law has to be aged in NEW American White Oak barrels. Since it typically doesn't age nearly as long as the other 2 styles, turnover is a lot higher. The reality is, America has a shit ton more wood and barrels at their disposal than does Ireland or Scotland as well. It makes perfect sense really.

International Whiskeys:
JAMESON = 30 million bottles sold yearly.
Johnnie Walker = 130 million bottles sold yearly. (biggest selling spirit in the world, period)
Chivas Regal = 55 million bottles sold yearly.

Thats a LOT of demand coming out of 2 countries that have less than 10 million people combined. And those are just the Big 3.

Other notables from a 300 million people populated country (US) for comparison sake:
Jim Beam =  72 million bottles sold yearly (biggest selling Bourbon in the world)
Jack Daniel's = 120 million bottles sold yearly (biggest selling United States whisky)

Some rarer ones:
Knob Creek = 2.5 million bottles sold yearly.
Woodford Reserve = 1.9 million bottles sold yearly.

Now granted, my evaluation is based around mixture with delicious coke product, but I think Woodford is one of the mildest, sweetest tasting burrbinz out there.

Tell me more?

Go to Makers Mark dot com, and click on the ambassador link.  You can sign up from there.  Your name will be put on a barrel and you can track your barrel over the six years it is in the distillery.  They also send you a gift each Christmas.  Once your barrel is ready you will get an invite to come up and get a bottle (or two in Jumbo's case) of single barrel burbinz from your barrel.  You also get to dip your own bottle.

Jumbo, did you drink one and hang on to the other?  What changes as a Sr ambassador?

Four Roses single barrel is kinda rough stuff.  The Four Roses small batch is pretty good though.

Nah, not a surprise.  If you notice, I don't ever talk about Jim Beam, or anything like that.  I want my bourbon to be aged, which is why I like the small batch stuff and the smaller distilleries.  Aged and single barrel if available.   Which would be why I rave over the Eagle Rare so much.  10 years and single barrel..... Makers Mark is about the only "mainstream bourbon" I drink and it is still a small batch.

I do want to go to the Maker's distillery just for the experience like Jumbo and ssg have spoken about. Actually most southern distilleries are pretty cool culturally, regardless of taste buds.

Done.  As much of this stuff as I have drank, I never knew about it.  I knew about the squires club with Jack Daniels, but fuck that, it's a shit product and I don't want to be associated with it.  I can't even drink Gentlemen Jack or the Single Barrel much anymore.

I've never heard of the Maker's Mark deal either. Just went and signed up also. That will give me a great excuse to go visit in a few years.

Just made it back from my Christmas trip back home to Alabama so I've been away from my boubon stash for a few days, my grandam doesn't approve of teh drinkin'. I tried several new bourbons before I headed back to home for the holidays.

Buffalo Trace- Very nice drink for the price. Similar taste to Eagle Rare(I think they are from the same distillery)

Old Weller Antique Bourbon- This gets a big ole meh. Nothing special at all, this is destined to meet a nice coke product... It's only real benefit is the 107 proof

Elijah Craig- Mighty fine sippin' bourbon. Can't believe I haven't had this before

I just stopped by the store for something new today, picked up Clyde May's Conecuh Ridge Whiskey. I had to try it because the bottle said it was Alabama style whiskey made from Clyde's secret recipe. Also picked up a bottle of Ezra Brook's 12 Year Single Barrel. I'll give them a taste tonight and report back.

We took some family up for the tour of JD in Lynchburg.  The tour guide could not have been any better if he was pulled out of central casting.  Around 65, overalls, flannel shirt, straw hat, 6'5" and 300lbs.  Talked out of the corner of his mouth with the thickest drawl these south Alabama born ears have ever heard.  Imagine a human version of Foghorn Leghorn.  Told us that on the last Friday of every month all the employees get a pint of JD to take home.

"We cawwwlllll that Friday, 'Goood Friday'......to be follerred hard upon by 'Baaad Saturday'"

The only person I have ever seen who fit in better for his job was the lead singer for a blues band at Fat Matt's Rib Shack in Atlanta.  Looked like BB King's and Howlin' Wolf's love child and his first song was "My Baby's Love is Better Than Collard Greens".

If any of you get the chance you need to try Moose Drool.  It is an brown ale that is from Big Sky brewery in Montana.  It is one of the best beers I have ever drank.  Kansas is the only place I have seen it though.

From their website,

That first taste, the best part of a beer after a long day. We want to make that better than ever. So we made Moose Drool. The name sounds a little iffy, but it's really the best Brown Ale you'll ever taste. That's why Moose Drool is far and away the best-selling beer brewed in Montana.

It's chocolate brown in color with a creamy texture. A malty beer with just enough hop presence to keep it from being too sweet. The aroma mostly comes from the malt with a hint of spice added by the hops. Moose Drool is brewed with pale, caramel, chocolate, and whole black malts; and Kent Goldings, Liberty, and WILLAMETTE HOPS. It has an original gravity of 13 degrees Plato, and is 4.2% alcohol by weight, 5.3% by volume.

I'll have to look for that.  I don't normally care too much for brown ales but if this one has a little more hops to it it might be good.

Haven't had any of this yet but it seems like an interesting drink. I have to agree that I normally steer clear of the standard Beam products. Beam does do a nice job on their small batch products. Booker's has kicked my ass on several occasions. I'm sipping on Baker's right now, it's pretty damn good!

If you can find it in a mini or pint bottle you might want to try it for yourself. I found it to be much too harsh, the heavy oak flavor was too much for me. The real pisser is that I bought a fifth for $23. Hell, I couldn't had a much better bourbon or whiskey in that price range.

Took a bottle of Jefferson's to the lake this weekend.  Didn't come back with any.  Can't take credit for consumming all of it, though.  Poured out two good stiffies.  Once because I had mixed one up, went outside to grill and by the time I got everything all set up and the fire going, the 96 degree weather had melted all the ice and it weren't fit to drink.  The other was Saturday night.  We had kind of sort of been drinking most of the day and night.  Late that evening, there was a gathering of some friends a couple of cabins down.  In my wisdom, I thought I needed one more, so I mixed one up and headed down there.  20 minutes later, I'm falling asleep on their porch..full drink in hand.  I went to bed.

I'm still around and kicking. Haven't been able to sample anything new in a while. I recently moved up to North Carolina leaving behind my favorite beverage emporium in Columbia, SC.  The local liquor stores only carry the basics. I have to scout around Greensboro(25 mile south of here) to find a new hotspot.

One interesting fact, about 5 miles from my front door is the joint: http://www.catdaddymoonshine.com/ (http://www.catdaddymoonshine.com/)

You can't buy direct from the distillery, but the package store a few blocks away usually has their goods.

The Junior Johnson Midnight Moon was nice and smooth but really lacked any distinct flavor. There was the faintest hint of corn but for the most part it was like a nice vodka. On the other hand, the blueberry was mighty tasty! A good three finger pour put me right to bed last night.

I started to pick up a bottle today of the Midnight moon and remembered what you said.  I just went with a standard stop of Elijah Craig 12 year and Eagle Rare.  The Jefferson's Reserve caught my eye, but at $50 a 750ml made me rethink that decision. Had a bottle of Bulleit not long ago.  Not bad stuff, not bad at all.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet, it's in the $50 range also. Why pay $50 for one great bottle when you can get two very good bottles for the same price?

Another bourbon that I tried recently, quite similar to E. Craig, is 1792 Ridegmont Reserve. Same price point as Craig. Give it a shot if you ever see it.

yeah, for 50 bucks I would agree. That's pretty damn thrifty for 18 year.

Ive bought 8 and 12 years for more than that. There is a reason I buy 18 yr Glenfidditch and Jameson sparingly. I may actually try some of this 18 yr Craig you speak of.

If you want to dog cuss bourbon, then Craig 18 year is not for you.  It will make you like my Scotch drinking boss.  I offered him a shot of it, he hates most bourbon, took one sip and said "DAMN!" with a pissed off look.  I asked him "Do you not like it" and his response was "No, I like it but it goes down way to smooth and it's at a good price."  He adds it to his collection now days.

Anything that is 18 yr, whether its Bourbon, Tenn or Irish/Scotch whiskey better go down smooth. At that age, it really doesn't matter as much, as its all good quality. Never had Craig, but I can assure myself blindly that 18 yr Craig will not resemble Beam in the least bit.

If it tastes good to me, I'm down with it. So if Craig 18 yr is good n smooth for 50.00? Great. That said, I am not down with anything Beam.

Small Batch only when it comes to Beam.  Have you ever tried the Woodford's Reserve?  Another fine KY product.

MarkChand must be drunk again.  Not one update in a while.

I have drank the Pappy Van Winkle 12 and 15 year and they are delicious.  I had the privilege of trying the 20 year for the first time every last week and..................Jesus De Christos!  That is by far the best bourbon I have ever had.  Snaggle, you wouldn't even need coke product.  Smoothest by far.  I have got to get my hands on a bottle of that!

If it's the 20, get ready to lay a Benjamin and then some on the counter.  It's not cheap.

I've been searching for Pappy but have never ran across it in any store or restaurant. That stuff is as elusive as Jim and his damn dream catchers.

I haven't had anything new in a while, my local store doesn't have anything super rare, I've been sticking with Elijiah Craig recently. I did pick up a new bottle of Booker's a few weeks back. This batch checks in at 130 proof and you feel every bit of it!

Bookers is a little rough for me.  The Pappy is about $110-$150 a bottle for the 20 year.  Not something you want to sit there and pound on, but it's so smooth you could easily go through a bottle before you knew it.

What 20 year is? If you get a 20 year for under 100 bucks you may want to question whats in the bottle.

I've never had a 20 year bourbon, but I can understand the Benjamin+ price tag that it would sport. This makes the 18 year Elijiah Craig seem like a steal, @ $50-60 depending on the store.

The 18 year Craig is a steal.  I think the 12 year is a steal as well.  For the price, those two are hard to beat.

Found out some interesting news today.  I always thought that Old Rip Van Winkle was it's own distillery but was not.  It was a company owned by Van Winkles and was distilled and bottled by Stitzel-Weller.  Stitzel-Weller closed it's doors in 92 and this is the last year you can get the "original" 20 year and 2015 for the 23 year.  The releases after that will be from Buffalo Trace and they will replace the rye with wheat.

This is a good and bad thing.  Bad b/c I want a bottle for a mantle piece so I can look down on people like the asshole I am, and good b/c trace products are easy for the stores around here to order.  Also bad that they are replacing the old recipe, which is up for debate as well, and I don't know if it will be the same.

Supposedly the originals came from a stock from distilleries that Old Van Winkle company bought up and used.  Took all the reserves and mixed them together to make the special reserve line.  So truly the "original" will be gone before too long.  Also "experts" are thinking the new line from Buffalo Trace will be very good, just not God Tier whiskey like the current line.

I have a confession to make, I haven't had the first burb since football has started.....

Game 1 we were flying to beach, didn't arrive to the condo until kick off, no time to make a bottle pick up
Games 2 & 3, too early for me to partake in the the sweet corn nectar. Went with Bloody Marys.
Game 4, Played 18 that afternoon, heavy beer drinking that day and stuck with beer for the night.

So you can put the blame for the piss-poor performance of our team squarely on my shoulders, I've broken the mojo...

My bourbon reserve has been sparse as of late, I'm sitting on a bootle of Booker's(can't indulge in that too often), Baker's (Booker's little brother, still ass kicking at 107 proof), and a bottle of pure piss water they call Devil's Cut, I share that with people I don't really like.

I still haven't located a proper bourbon honeyhole in the area where I can pick up really nice stuff, the search will continue....

As a matter of fact, stopped by my lick her store last night and the owner....as he is apt to do...let me sample 3 different burrbinz he got in that day.  Over ice and no delicious coke product.  Wish I had on the first one.  Burned so bad I forgot the name of it.  One called Sam Houston was quite nice and the third, Stetson, was pretty meh.  Enjoyed the Sam Houston.  Drove home wondering what my blood alcohol was.

I am catching up on this thread as I have been exploring the burbonz as of late.

Question to the esteemed counselor from Dothan.  Why do you spend so much on stuff like Basil Haydens if you are going to mix it with Coke?

Seriously, though.  I have always been a huge rum drinker.  Sometimes I want a cuba libre...but I am not going to pour coke into my Zaya, that is when I'll pull out the Captain.  Zaya only gets a couple of ice cubes. I have had all different types of rum mixed with coke product and for the most part unless it is spiced or clear rum there is not a huge difference.  So I ask again, why an (more) expensive bottle of  Whiskey if you are going to mix it?

Honestly, I guess that's just the way I was raised. My mom and pops always came home from work, turned on the 6:00 news and eased back with a CC and 7.  If they drank anything else, it was something like a screwdriver or a Bloody Mary.  You just mixed stuff.  I never really took the time to try and develop a taste for any liquor straight up.  In college, it wasn't about enjoying the flavors or intracasies of a fine bourbon or rum.  It was about making it taste good so you could get toe up from da' flo up.

Over the last year or so, I've been going to a lick her store a friend of mine opened.  A couple of times a week, he'll pour us up a glass or 3 over ice.  Mostly different bourbons he's gotten in and wants to try.  I'll admit, I've found a few that are fairly enjoyable with nothing more than a melted cube or two to dilute it.  But I still find about 3/4 or 67% of them too harsh to make me want to sit down and enjoy sipping on them. One that stood out the other day was a Woodforde Double Oak.  Actually had real flavor and no burn on the finish.

I used to mix when I was in college. Granted I was drinking KY Gentlemen and Old Crow at $13 for half a gallon.  I remember waking up one morning hungover so bad that I told myself, "once you get out of school and get a real job, no more cheap shit." and I have kept that promise to myself.  I haven't bought a bottle of cheap shit other than to cook with.

I am kind of like Michaleen Flynn from Quite man: "When I drink whiskey, I drink whiskey; and when I drink water, I drink water. "  I love the taste of the charred oak, the burn of the spices and the nutty, toffee flavors that you get from your higher end bourbons.

Rather than using the supplied whiskey, I would prefer to find some local shine to add to the barrel. Also they will not ship this product to North Carolina or Alabama, fuckers.... However, I can have it shipped to friends in South Carolina and arrange a pick up.  Thinks it's worth $150 smackers?

Have a buddy that is closing on his house and will be having a house warming party coming up.  Called the lick-her store earlier to see if they had and when they would be having some more Pappy 20 year in.  Said it would be there the first weekend in Nov and I would be #37 on the waiting list and that unless about 15 people canceled there would be no way I could get a bottle.   He said once people figured out this was the last run of the "original" that people want it.

This used to be me, but now I enjoy the taste. I started on Knob Creek and Makers, with a splash of water to cut the taste a little. You can still taste the bourbon but it is not as strong. Once you start acquiring a taste for that, you don't dilute it as much. Then you can move to other bourbons and really figure out what you preferences are.

Decided to try something a little different, Bernheim Original wheat whiskey produced by Heaven Hill distillery. Nice, smooth little drink. The additional wheat cuts down on the typical alcohol burn. If you ever spot it locally it is definitely worth a try.

I brought a bottle of Bulleit and a liter of Crown down with us. My BIL(lives in Nashville) brought a bottle of a TN Whiskey distilled in Nashvegas, Collier & McKeel. Pure piss-water...I tried to drink it on the rocks and it was a no go. Snags would be proud, I added some Coke Zero to the mix to make it palatable. I didn't touch that shit the rest of the day.

Larceny gets the Markchand stamp of approval! Very nice, robust type of bourbon. I would compare it to Eagle Rare or Craig. Definitely worth picking up if you run across it.

Just got a bottle of Jack Daniels single barrel select as a Christmas gift, and I am impressed with how smooth it is.  I usually don't even look at the Jack section, but this is worth a look if you haven't tried it yet.

I tried one of the maples a few weeks ago. Can't recall the brand because the owner of my favorite lick her store let me sample it.  Thought I would spew. It was like turning up a bottle of Mrs. Butterworth.

On our "tastings" at my lick her store, we always start out letting the caramel colored liquid socialize only with ice.  If it's pleasing to the palate, we continue that monogomous relationship. If not, then it becomes a threesome as we introduce some form of delicious coke product to the mix.

I found something new this week, Angels Envy. Bourbon finished in port wine barrels. This burb was a little bit sour, possible from the port barrel? All in all it was quite good. The closest comparison it can draw would be Blantons. The Blantons I've tried had a bit of the tartness similar to this. Definitely worth trying if you see it.

Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon earned the Chairman’s Trophy as the world’s best bourbon at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge in 2012 and 2013, scoring three points higher than Pappy Van Winkle’s 23 Year Old Bourbon in 2012 and two points higher than Pappy Van Winkle’s 20 Year Old Bourbon in 2013. Definitely a different taste, but I like.

Blanton's is definitely a quality bourbon. It's a bit on the pricey side around these parts, @$50 for a fifth. It's not in my regular rotation, it's more of a splurge for me.

There are 6 or 8 different corks to collect that have the horse and rider in different riding positions. If you get drunk enough, or perhaps ingest a hallucinogen, your cork collection will appear to trot across the room.

Since you all are the gurus of bourbon -

When does Pappy Van Winkle release its product?  And where could I grab a bottle?  I'd be willing to drive anywhere.

I've grown in love with bourbon.  I have not yet tried anything high end though.  Jim Beam is my drink of choice because I can afford it regularly.  They had a sample of Devi's Cut with the bottle I bought yesterday.  It's incredible and is making drinking regular Jim Beam seem less enjoyable.

Ok so to expand you knowledge base...

Case of beer = 24

Case of wine = 12 or 6 depending on who packages it.  Which means you need to ask when you are buying it this way because what you think is a good deal may not be.

Case of bourbon = 6

Usually March and November.  Good luck finding any.  I got a call from the ABC store telling me that they had zero bottles and that private liquor stores got all the stock.  Called one of them up and they started selling at noon on a Tuesday and to get there early.  I got there at 11:45 and was one of many who didn't get there in time to get a bottle.  I was probably 40th or so inline and getting only 3 cases of each they sold out before I could get any.  Luckily the ABC store called me back and said they got 3 bottles of the 10 year Old Rip Van Winkle and the 12 year Van Winkle Special Reserve.  She held one of each for me long enough for me to drive from work and pick them up.  The 15, 20 and 23 is hard to get and I have never seen the Family Reserve Rye at any place in Alabama.

The 10 year isn't one from that line that gets talked up too much.  Mostly the 15, 20 and 23.  I agree it is about the same level as Woodford.  It's a good 10 yr bourbon for $42 (what I paid for it), nothing more, nothing less.

Out of the Van Winkle line I would much rather have the 15 than any of it.

The state of Alabama sucks monkey balls for many reasons and I have another one to add to the list.

It doesn't have these:

Purchased two 4-packs of Kentucky Barrel Ale, a bottle of Bulleit, and a bottle of Jameson - not the small bottles mind you - and only spent $71 total.

It didn't really hit me how cheap the prices were until I had already left.  I didn't get a chance to go back.

The fact that chart has "Four Roses" anywhere on it makes it invalid.

Found a bottle of Elmer T. Lee on a recent trip to Chesapeake, VA. I had my first sampling last night and it was outstanding. Elmer is made with the same mash bill as Blanton's, only not aged as long. The similarities in taste are undeniable. I paid $27 for this bottle, or roughly 19/32nds the price of a bottle of Blanton's. If you ever see it, buy it!

Just catching up on this thread, but full concurrence on Blanton's.

Same distillery makes Buffalo Trace, which IMO is the best budget bourbon. They also make Pappy's & Sazerac Rye.

My bar's currently got a bottle of Buffalo Trace, Blanton's, Woodford Reserve, & Bulleit. (Also Sazerac & Jack Daniels)

The hand model in this picture appears to hold and caress the top of this bottle as if it were a stubby little dick.

Well he touches his own a lot so he has experience with stubby dicks.

Did any of you get a bottle of the Pappy Van Winkle 23 year old reserve?  I saw on the news where grown men were lined up outside ABC stores like teenagers trying to get concert tickets.

Haven't reviewed in awhile been drinking Michters Rye and Bulleit (orange) Bourbon as of late.

Decided to try some new stuff...

Bowman Brothers
Picked this up at ABC in preparation of Uncle Sani and Garman visit.
I give it a solid B+
Cost is $39 decent for the quality.  Smooth, not real strong. Definitely worth a try.

Breaking and Entering Bourbon
Again picked up in preparation of upcoming circle jerk visit.
C+
Again cost was around $33.
Not overly exciting, fairly smooth, I wouldn't get again.

Michter's Unblended American Whiskey (the Blue Label (far left))
I am not a tried and true Rye guy, I usually prefer bourbon. However Michter's Straight Rye is the exception to this.  I have reviewed the rye before and it has become one of my top shelf buys.  Cost anywhere from $39-$45.
Because of this I decided to try the Unblended American Whiskey

I give it a B possibly B+ it's a bit sweeter than the rye and as smooth, but it doesn't have anywhere near the complexities of the rye.  Definitely worth a try if you see it around.

However in my opinion the Rye is still where it is at for this particular label of whiskey's.

While the young Tiger's have been busting their tails on the practice field I have been prepping my liver for the long season ahead.

Bulleit Rye: Primarily used for Old Fashions

Lacerny:  Wanted to try in in the place of Elijah Craig(our house bourbon). Certainly a good bourbon but it will not replace E. Craig in the regular rotation

Willett Pot Still Reserve: Very smooth and tasty drink. This one disappeared quickly. Not quite sure on why my wife insisted on keeping the bottle after it was empty...

Sad Story Bro:

My girl loaded up my bday present, a bottle of Pappy (not sure the vintage), a bunch of food and assorted sundries in her dad's Yeti cooler to bring to me for a weekend of debauchery.  Her boss, ignorant fuck that he is, is worried that the cooler might leak on his floors so he insists that the cooler be stashed on the office's back patio.

Some limp-dick motherfucker came by and snatched the cooler (likely with no idea the treasures it held) and now I have no Pappy.

Below is part of a piece from the October/November issue of one of my favorite mags, Garden & Gun.  If you've never checked this magazine out, do so.  You'll be hooked.  This is all they put out of the article on the website, but it's a good look into a bourbon I'd never heard of.

by Wells Tower -  Tennessee -  October/November 2015

What happens when a dozen-odd whiskey aficionados, led by one maniacally obsessed Southern chef and the reigning bourbon king, gather to test twenty-four years’ worth of a legendary brand? Among other things, a hell of a good time.

“I’m not sure we’ve got enough bourbon,” said the chef Sean Brock on the morning of the epic whiskey tasting. Brock was joking. The quantity of bourbon in the room had turned the daylight brown.

Bourbon was not only the dominant decor in Brock’s downtown Nashville loft; it was, by volume, the primary occupant. Crowding Brock’s living room were geriatric gallons of Old Grand-Dad and Old Fitzgerald, enthroned on their own miniature rocking chairs. Imp-scale bottles peeped out from behind cured hams (another form of furniture here). Against the near wall stood a four-shelf bookcase stacked three deep with bottles that would make a bourbon fancier take out a second mortgage. Shelved there were delicious antiques including but not limited to Old Rip Van Winkle, David Nicholson 1843, and Very Very Old Fitzgerald, which Brock sells at his acclaimed restaurant Husk for $240 per pour.

The business at hand, however, was not Brock’s deep holdings but a lately acquired army of fifths, pints, and handles crowding the kitchen island. With the help of his girlfriend, Adi Noe, Brock—known for his Charleston, South Carolina, restaurants McCrady’s, Minero, and also Husk, whose Nashville branch opened in 2013—was draining the bottles into anonymously numbered flasks for the day’s blind tasting.

The collection represented a twenty-four-year “vertical” of W. L. Weller Special Reserve containing a bottle from every year from 1987 to 2010. Vintage Weller is a substance direly coveted by bourbon fanatics. It is a close sibling of Pappy Van Winkle, a bourbon over which the whiskey world has lately gone insane. Empty bottles of Pappy can sell on eBay for upwards of a hundred dollars. A full bottle, when it can be found, will set you back thousands. The good news is that modern-day Weller is a lot easier to find than Pappy, and it is genetically identical to the celebrated stuff. Weller and Pappy enter the world in the same distillation. As they age, the most extraordinary barrels get set aside for the Van Winkle line. The unchosen ones are sent off to market under the Weller label at a bit north of twenty dollars a bottle, within reach of the common man.

In Chef Brock’s unguarded opinion, vintage Weller is “the best damn whiskey ever made in the whole world. You taste it and you have to have it, no matter the cost. Then you become obsessed with different labels and expressions and years, and then you wake up one day and you have way too much whiskey in your apartment.”

The loosely scientific purpose of today’s gathering was to determine which bottlings and distilleries have produced the tastiest Weller. This advance in whiskey knowledge, Brock explained, had come at considerable inconvenience and strain. “This will only happen once,” he said, topping off a taster’s flask. “It’s a pain in the ass and it’s expensive as hell.”

Assembling the twenty-four Wellers took him the better part of a year and the better part of ten thousand dollars. So where did he find all of these obscure bottlings? I asked Brock. He looked at me as though I’d demanded power of attorney. “It’s a secret,” replied the chef, a solid, low-built man of thirty-seven with plentiful tattoos. “If I tell you where I bought it, then you’ll go buy it all, and then I’ll kick your ass, and then we’re not friends anymore.”

Sampling all twenty-four bottles would be a full day’s work running from noon to night in two shifts with a lunch break in between. Right around twelve o’clock Brock’s team of connoisseurs arrived. There were twelve or so of them, I think (soon into the tasting, they became hard to count). Mostly from out of state, they were a disparate bunch of middle-aged men who had intersected over the Internet at a common node of bourbon obsession. There was Mike, a guy from Pennsylvania who, in addition to ransacking “dusties” from the storerooms of rural liquor stores, worked for a water quality bureau and also collected jeeps. There was a hulking man named Jared, the whiskey curator of the Washington, D.C., bar Jack Rose. Rampant peptic ulcers had forced Jared onto the wagon, but his commitment to bourbon was so intense that he had traveled more than five hundred miles merely to smell the Wellers. There were guys who worked in restaurants and residential construction and a guy who claimed to be the campus chaplain at a university in Florida. Beyond maleness, their only ostensible common thread was a nearly hazardous degree of whiskey expertise. To get into conversation with these fellows was to become a receptacle for information about tax stamps, the history of sour mash, Distilled Spirits Plants codes, and the chemistry of barrel char.

Elevating the gathering from an assembly of serious bourbon hobbyists to a conclave of the royal whiskey society was the arrival of Julian Van Winkle III and his son Preston. Julian III is the president of the Old Rip Van Winkle company. He is the grandson of Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr., the late co-owner of the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, which sits at the headwaters of the Weller/Van Winkle bourbon streams. It was Julian III who first bottled the Pappy Van Winkle line of whiskeys and who also made a bourbon extremist out of Sean Brock.

“I wasn’t a bourbon fanatic until I drank Pappy Van Winkle, which wasn’t until 2007,” Brock recalled. At that point, he had been confining his culinary relentlessness to the meticulous sourcing of heritage rice strains, cowpeas, grits, and Ossabaw Island hogs. In 2008, Van Winkle collaborated with Brock on a Pappy Van Winkle dinner at McCrady’s. After that, Brock fell into an obsession whose ferocity outstripped Van Winkle’s own.

“Damn,” said Van Winkle, taking in Brock’s bourbon rack. “And I thought I had it bad.” Then Van Winkle turned toward Brock, and in a coals-to-Newcastle gesture, presented the chef with a bottle of twelve-year-old Weller. “What do you want for it?” Brock asked.

“I don’t know,” said Van Winkle, musing. “Let me drink good whiskey all day, I guess.”

By now, the connoisseurs were getting restless. They were up on their toes. They were ready to drink. A visiting journalist, however, was feeling pangs of concern. While the rudiments of bourbon drinking are not lost on me, twenty-four was more glasses of whiskey than I usually have in one go. Grateful though I was to be along for this once-in-a-lifetime binge, I did wonder how much of the vertical I would manage to blind-taste while remaining vertical with sight left in my eyes. The temptation was strong to batten down, to put leashes on my wallet, phone, and keys, to pin to my lapel the address of my hotel. Still, this was anxious expectancy of a pleasurable kind, like anticipating the onset of a sumptuous typhoon.

But in his wisdom Chef Brock had laid in a hospitable array of sobriety preservers: a fleet of deviled eggs, pimento cheese and crackers, ham biscuits with pickled cauliflower, and a saw-your-own hog leg over by the bourbon shelf, a saber jutting from the meat.

There was no spittoon in sight.

Yes you did. And you've also already pulled up the W.L. Weller's website.

Spent the weekend roaming the hills of Kentucky touring various distilleries and sampling the wares created from at least 51% corn. We had originally intended on taking in a football matchup in Lexington Thursday evening but with the season in the tanks we diverted funds to a more worthwhile and pleasurable endeavor. We were able to visit Maker's Mark, Willet, Barton's and Jim Beam. Bulleit was on the agenda but they closed for the day just prior to our arrival.

From Left to Right:

1792 Port Finished Bourbon: From Barton's distillery. After aging, the bourbon spent another 2 years in Port Wine barrels. We tried this last night and it was damn fine. You could definitely detect the port flavors very similar to Angel's Envy

Maker's 46: Nothing fancy just a higher end version of Maker's with French Oak wood added during an extra aging process

Maker's 46 Cask Strength: Uncut 46 only available for purchase at the distillery. This batch came in at 109.6 proof. Have yet to try this one

Wathen's Kentucky Bourbon: Never heard of it or tried it. Hopefully it's good

I.W. Harper: This is a 15 year old bourbon once again available in the states as of this year. It was an export only product going to Japan.

Johnny Drum Private Stock: Produced by Willet distillery. Pretty tasty drink, it's a bit fiery due to the high rye content.

Willet Estate Single Barrel: This was aged 13 years and hand selected by the distillery for single barrel bottling. Only 169 bottles from this barrel. May have to save this for a special occasion.

WL Weller Special Reserve: A Buffalo Trace product. This is a very smooth, easy drinker. It is highly wheated making it sweeter versus fiery.

Jefferson's Ocean: This is the fancy stuffed aged at sea as it floats on a cargo ship. Supposedly the rocking back and forth on the ship forces the bourbon in and out of the barrel wood. Haven't opened it yet but it will be on this weekends playlist.

BTW, none of these will ever mingle with DCPs. Maybe a cube or two of ice or a few drops of water but that's it!
