Title: American Horror Story
Post by: Kaos on October 06, 2011, 06:33:47 AM
Wow.

Stumbled across this on FX last night.  Got to say it was one of the most intriguing, creepy series debuts I've ever seen.

TV-MA for profanity and nudity.  Too bad the nudity was a dude constantly walking around the house bare assed but still, what a freaky opening episode.

You've got a dude ready to get it on with a 60-something maid with a glass eye, you've got the mom from Friday Night Lights getting grudge fucked by a guy in a latex body suit who may or may not have been her husband (and now she's preggers), you've got a daughter cutting herself, you've got maid masturbating and then dude following suit on top of an end table and you've got Jessica Lange syruping it up as the next door neighbor.

The show starts with a creepy mongoloid girl if that tells you anything.

Film quality was movie level, acting was top shelf (although some of the storyline was a little confusing and contrived) and the promise for this one is great.

If you like freaky horror shit, set the DVR and give this one a few episodes to see where it goes.

Watch the show.  Curious to know what you (collectively) think.

Reviews are mixed.  Some are saying it's nothing more than a Nip/Tuck remake made as a horror vehicle.  But that's because they know the Nip/Tuck guys are behind it.

Dylan McDermott whacking off to the masturbating 60-year old maid with a glass eye is worth a look anyway.

So is Jessica Lange slinking and prowling through the show.  She was great.

There are so many quirks and divergent stories -- the psycho student, the dark daughter, the baseball twins, "The Gimp" in a rubber suit, the mongoloid, Jessica Lange's feral sweetness, new baby coming, crispy critter man, naked McDermott, what's burning?, the heads in the basement, sexy-hair Friday night Lights mom getting gimped, the two faces of the maid who may not be alive -- I don't see how they'll wrap all that up in a season.  It's like the opened every door in the house (and it's a big house) in the premiere and I guess they'll slowly walk through closing the doors one at a time.

Saw this first on the program website:

NOT interested.

In the context of the story it was an interesting scene.  Not what I expected to see.

FWIW?  You could not force me to watch Gleet and Nip/Tuck never interested me.  I tried it a few times.  Not my bottle of pepper.

Had I known beforehand the glee/tuck people were behind this I would have skipped it. Glad that knowledge was unavailable to me.  Will give it a couple of weeks to see how the stories resolve.

Three episodes in and the weirdness factor has grown exponentially.  What's going on?  I have no idea.  I like that.   Worried that the eventual end reveal will be a cop out but so far?  It leaves crazy threads hanging -- where's rubber body suit guy? -- and opens even sicker cans of worms.

I feel like the last episode may have revealed too much too soon.  Of course, that's without knowing what else there is left to reveal.  There's still a mystery left with the kid that's seeing the daughter, although they sort of let that one be known too, just not as directly;  I'm pretty sure I know who he is.

But yeah, the gimp is noticeably missing and still unexplained.  However, based on the last episode's retelling of Lange's past, I think I've got him pinned down too.

Well when you said Connie Britton was getting grudge fucked in the 1st episode it caught my attention.  I have it on DVR and I haven't watched one yet, waiting to get 4 or 5 episodes in hopes that I will want to immediately go to the next episode.

The show took a decidedly hard left away from horror and into kinkiness last night.

Two blow job scenes, one that ended with an old crone wiping her mouth with a handkerchief.

Connie Britton massaging her hoozit with a dildo and imagining being stroked by a variety of dudes.

And a bunch of other bizarre shit including a chained up retardo, more backfill from burn man and the slow slide into assimilation with the dead/undead for Violet.

I liked the "make me a sandwich" quote.

It will allegedly veer back into horror next week with the unveiling of rubber man.

I still haven't watched.  I have them all on the DVR just waiting.  I have read what people think about this show.  The general consensus that I get is "think Rob Zombie level of freaky and WTF, without the Rob Zombie gore".  Does that seem about accurate?

If so I can't wait to start watching.

Wow.

Tonight's reveals, while I guess you could have seen them coming were pretty good.  I guess you could say you saw them coming, perhaps, but only if you threw out about a dozen possibilities and this was one of the ones you proposed as possible.

The show turned me around again.

Outstanding dialogue, Jessica Lange continues to chew on scenes like Mark Mangino eats cake (she's outstanding),  and even eight or nine episodes in we're still introducing or reinventing characters.

If you're not watching it and you enjoy good story-telling, solid pace and psychological twists you're really missing out.

The minute she ran out of the house and the dog barked but the people didn't respond...I knew. Good shit.

What do you think burn dude has planned? I know that he isn't just going to go away...especially after the scene with his wife and daughters...

Some will retain.  Viv, Tate, Violet, the gays, Moria (why did she get older?), Hayden, the nurses, Thadeus, the doc, his wife, Bo, Boy Dahlia, Dahlia, the twins... they're all stuck anyway.

There's going to be something really fucked up that we didn't know that will be revealed next Wednesday.

Completely different shows.

Breaking Bad has been such a good story for 5 seasons, and I really don't think AHS can pull this off for a second season. I didn't think Breaking Bad could be beat for leaving me "WTF?", but AHS has done it. I can't decide which one I like best. I have gone back and forth on both since I started typing...

Got to say I was unhappy with the sappy happy resolution to the season.

Great series overall but the resolution was just too tidy. It was like the writers said "well, we fucked with their minds long enough.  Let's just put a bow on it and add nothing with spice or intrigue.

Be curious how season two unfolds.

I was a bit dissappointed too. The finale was all over the place. They stuck a lot in that episode and it felt really rushed. The part where they were trying to scare the new family out of the house was stupid. It was like Beetlejuice.

I am not sure how they are going to do Season 2. I would guess more with the little demon child and less with the house? I don't know. It seems there is a "good vs. bad" thing going now with the ghosts of the house, but there is only so much to keep my attention than a new family moving in and then getting scared out.

Will be interesting. Does anyone know if they have the new season planned yet or when it will come back?

Just caught up on this show.

I think it was the best show I've possibly ever seen.

I feel like they wrapped it up as if it were a one-season mini-series, although starting with like the third episode I thought they were answering too much too quick. Despite that, it never disappointed me in coming up with new questions and twists. I suspect season 2 to continue doing that.

Like you guys, I was expecting a new couple to move into the house at the end of this season. But I didn't expect them to be out already. As for the "big reveal" you guys were talking about a few pages back? I definitely saw that one coming from the moment she was given the pills. After Tate brought her in the shower, I thought the audience was supposed to realize what happened. With her not going to school, staying in her room, and not eating for weeks. I figured that was intentionally obvious.

Look forward to next season. If there's going to be one.

According to Wikipedia:

Quote
In October 2011, the FX Network renewed the series for a second season. In December 2011, series co-creator Ryan Murphy announced his plans to change the characters and location for the second season.[4] In March 2012, Murphy revealed that the second season has been designed for Jessica Lange, saying: "This will really be the Jessica Lange show so I’m very excited about it. We are designing this amazing new opposite of the Constance character for her. She and I have spoken about different things. She has a lot of ideas, and has a lot of input into her character. She told me some things she has always wanted to play as an actress."[8] Zachary Quinto, who had a minor role as Chad in the first season, was confirmed as one of the male leads in March 2012.[9] At the William S. Paley Television Festival, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, and Lily Rabe were confirmed to return in unspecified roles.[10] It was also reported in March 2012 that Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine is in negotiations to appear in the second season. He will be playing a "contemporary character and half of a couple known only as 'The Lovers'", according to Tim Stack of Entertainment Weekly. The show's producers will be accommodating Levine's busy summer schedule.[11]

I feel like they wrapped it up as if it were a one-season mini-series

Unknown to me at least, this was the original intent.  Each season of the show was supposed to be a new and different story which is why the entire arc completed at the end of season one.  That was to be the end of that house and those people.

But the success of the show apparently created a conundrum.  I can hear the Fox executives now.

"She just won a fucking Emmy.  You seriously telling us you're going to just ditch the Constance character and put Jessica Lange on the shelf?  No.  I don't think so.  And that house?  It's iconic.  People associate that house with the show.  It's got its own personality.  You can't eliminate it.  So get your happy asses back to your trailers and think of something else.  Now, dammit. Go."

I feel like the only question they left unanswered that demanded an explanation was why does the maid look like a haggard old lady to women?

As a ghost, it appears to be her default form, but clearly it's not the real her considering A) Constance's husband cheated on her with her, and B) When the police are interrogating Constance, they show a picture of the young, hot version of her attached to her file.

I don't know that I accept that as a full explanation.

Like I said, she obviously really looked like that in life. Both evidenced by her file when the detectives confront Constance, and the fact that her husband lusted after her the way he did while she was alive. When they show Constance shooting them both, she saw Moira as the young vixen.

No one else in the house ages a day beyond when they died. Tate hasn't aged a day. The Montgomery haven't aged a day. Why Moira?

She only became the old hag as a ghost. Why?

If anything, "Men see what they want to see, women see things as they are" just confuses the issue more, because Sani's dead on. It's completely the other way around. The men see her as she was in life, and only the women see her as the old glass-eyed woman.
