Title: Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All
Post by: AUChizad on August 28, 2011, 10:27:12 PM
Who's heard of them?

It's a rap group as big or bigger than Wu-Tang but it consists of all high school kids. They basically recorded a ton of shit on their computers and put it up on their website, and now they're relatively mainstream.

They're weird as shit. I'm not sure if I like them, but I think I do. It's definitely different.

This is Tyler, The Creator, who is to OFWGKTA as RZA is to Wu-Tang. The "leader" and producer.

This is Earl Sweatshirt.

Apparently, his mother sent him to a rehab boarding school in Samoa, so he is not presently a member.

I've decided. I like them.

This is the R&B singer. By far the most mainstream sounding of the group. The oldest member as well. He relocated from New Orleans during Katrina to LA where he met up with the rest of the members.

Kind of NSFW (Ghost titties)

Not his best song though.

These are more representative of the album.

I haven't really liked an R&B artist since high school. I like this.

Frank Ocean has a regular mixtape, consisting of the better songs, called nostalgia,ULTRA. It's pretty solid. He also has a 72 track mix-tape which plays more like 4 Pop 40 albums than a mix-tape.

Tyler The Creator ft. Frank Ocean - "She"

I know I'm probably the only one to notice the Troll II reference with the street sign.

No one has any comment?

This is the most fascinating music group to arise in quite some time, in my opinion.

I'm curious what others think.

This is the most fascinating music

Is that what the kids are calling that crap these days?

Now....get off my lawn.

Since Chizad has an erection for Odd Future, I thought I'd post this:

Nothing great, but okay I guess.

Didn't see this til just now, since I was out of the country when it was posted.

I dig it.

It creeps me the fuck out and I like it. I can definitely see why young kids would.

The song itself reminds me of an early Eminem, just naming celebrities and rattling off disses of a (what I assume to be) joking nature.  The video, on the other hand, is creepy.

Speaking of the video, I've often wondered where rap artists find old white people for some of their videos.  Especially one as creepy as this.  That's somebody's grandfather spasming in a corner mouthing, "Bitch, I'm a mother fuckin' Martian."

That's kind of Tyler's M.O., much as it was Eminem's back in the day. What can you say, he's a kid. Six years younger than Shady was when his major label debut dropped.

These guys are on some serious fucking drugs.

The new video for their major label debut as a group.

I liked the Troll II reference (Nilbog street) immediately followed by him slapping a crabby black girl in the face, and when she recoils, she's suddenly a satisfied Asian who appears grateful for having just been slapped.

The house number at 1:56 is 1488 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteen_Words). They constantly put tiny references to fucked up shit like that.

Um, no.

Um, no.
I wouldn't say "mainstream" as in not weird. But Devo was pretty weird. Fuck, Lady GaGa's pretty weird. It's what the kids are listening to. Don't blame me.

Yonkers (which I still think is the best song and video) was nominated for the MTV Video Music Award for video of the year over Adele, Katy Perry, the Beastie Boys, and Bruno Mars, and won "Best New Artist" around the time this thread was started. Pretty mainstream as far as modern "pop" goes.

Way late to this...just haven't had time to check in on what the kids are listening to.

I think it's great.  Fun, weird, and it disturbs adults.

When Anderson Cooper "came out", they were talking on the Adam Carolla podcast about how it's never shocking. Everyone knew that anyway. Elton John, Lance Bass, etc. He said he wanted to hear someone that no one actually saw coming for a mile away, just so it would at least be interesting.

Well, I'd say that happened in Frank Ocean yesterday.

As you are the only person who has ever heard of this formerly closeted gay, this news makes no ripples.  It's not even a blip.

On another note I've seen you in this thread (and others) make reference to "what kids are listening to these days..."

Based on what I've seen so far?  I submit that you have no idea whatsoever what "kids" are listening to and are (much like we all did at a certain stage in our lives) deluding yourself into believing you're still on the cutting edge.  The edge got up and ran away a long time ago.

Clue?  You're officially a fogey.  In a few short years you'll get to attach the "old" prefix -- if you're not there already.

Oh, I'm a fogey.

I'm just 20 years behind you. To me, great music was exclusively produced between 1992 and 1998.

Just borrowed my in-law's car over the weekend with Sirius/XM and blared Lithium, the 90's rock station, the entire time. Made the six hour drive fly by. Of the "new" music I'm into, the most common genre is some form of bluegrass/alt country/Americana folksy stuff. I'm into banjos, fiddles and upright basses. Can't get much more fogey than that.

As for Odd Future, you're mistaken if you think that this is my favorite group or something. Like dubstep, which has been discussed here before, I'm more fascinated by it than really into it. Well, moreso with dubstep. With that, I feel exactly like what my parents must have thought about the shit I was listening to in Jr. High. Confounded, really. But this? Some of their songs are really good and others are really bad, seemingly almost ironically and intentionally. Same "Lo-Fi" attitude prevalent in punk rock, especially in the late 70's.

The whole "coming out" thing has gotten old, big time. If you're gay, so what?  I don't need a formal announcement and for you to tell what friends have been "very supportive", as if you're dealing with a loss or some dreaded disease.  I don't give a flippity flop who is gay or not.

I think we need some celebrity that everyone just knows is gay releasing a sex tape with Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan.  That would cause TMZ to just implode into a black hole sucking in the rest of the entertainment world with it making the world a better place.

Just listened to Frank's DefJam debut channelORANGE for the first time.

Easily the best R&B album in the last 15 years, if you're askin' me.

And yes, we now know that he's gay, but just as equally as Dan Cathy being publicly anti-gay doesn't impede his ability to make delicious chicken sandwiches, Frank Ocean chugging cock doesn't impede him from making a damn fine album.
