Title: Alabama Destinations
Post by: Townhallsavoy on June 03, 2011, 10:50:54 AM
I'm currently on day 5 of my 70 day summer vacation, and I'm already bored.

Next week, we go to Orange Beach for a few days.  I'll go to Nashville for a week in July.

But other than that, I'm just sitting here on the internet.

What is there to do around Alabama?  Cool small towns to visit?  Hiking destinations?  Historical sites?  Small town restaurants?  Any ideas?

Poke salad festival in Arab, Alabama.  That will really open your eyes.

I always like Sequoyah Caverns in Valley Head for a day trip (not sure where you are coming from, so it might be longer than a day).  Has some really nice natural reflecting pools inside the caves, it looks like you are looking into a huge hole but it just the high ceiling being perfectly reflected.  http://www.sequoyahcaverns.com/

Some nice hiking and caverns around Walls of Jericho north of Scottsboro, neat place.

I've heard Tigers for Tomorrow in Attalla is interesting, but I've never been.  It's a walk through animal park.  They have mostly large predators, tigers, wolves, leopards. etc.

It already passed.  I'll have to wait until next May.

Mentone is about 2 hours from me, so the caverns are a definite possibility.

AWK - No pool to sit by.  Although, we've considered budgeting to build an in-ground pool in our backyard.  Especially since we're both teachers and will most likely have every summer off unless we get real jobs.

Play golf?  Fish?

RTJ golf trail.  Some of the best fishing in the world at Wilson, Wheeler, and Guntersville.

In July come to Florence/Muscle Shoals for Handy Fest.  Always a blast, good music, good drinks and decent/ good food. Some really talented musicians will be playing there. Hell, if you need a place to stay close by, I have an extra room.  While you are there do the "Ivy Green" Helen Keller tour.  Interesting stuff if you like history.

Pretty sure you can go hiking at Noccalula Falls.  Hike at Oak Park or Horseshoe Bend.

Come to Huntsville one night and go eat at Connor's or Grille 29 and hit the Crossroads up and listen to a good band and have a drink.

Just some suggestions.

There are many pools throughout Birmingham you can go sit by for free.  For example, my old condo.

Ummm, well I'm just not sure Snag. Don't remember much from Sat or Sunday night other than those little bastards were pissing me off the way they were looking at me. With their heads barely above the water eyeing my beer and shit. Fuck them. The fight would've lasted 10 seconds. Because I wouldn't have lasted long in my drunken state. And then there's the fact that I am a human and they are gators with a 5000 psi bite. Still though, I wasn't gonna let em stare at my beer in that fashion.

Let me just say, I don't drive 1.6 miles to see Noccalula Falls. BUT, if you like hiking and are considering driving this way, do it next weekend so you'll get to enjoy the "Riverfest" in Gadsden. Where else could you see Randy Travis, Bo Bice, The Guess Who, Jessie James, and Flo Rida for $25?

Something about that combo don't sound right. But I'd pay that just to see the Guess Who and Travis.

I never thought I would see Randy Travis and Flo Rida at the same gig. The times....they are a changin.

True story, I whooped a chairs ass one night for tripping me after heavy amounts of drinking.  I was talked into it, but still......That fucker didn't trip anyone else after I sent to it to that great woodshop in the sky.

I think this is the first year for a rap artist. Friday night once was for rock and Saturday was country. Then someone complained about racism so now Flo Rida is on his way in for Friday. I think the Guess Who, Bo Bice and Randy Travis are all on Saturday.

The Chief Ladiga Trail is Alabama's first rails-to-trails project. The 33-mile trail stretches from the Alabama-Georgia state line to Anniston. The Chief Ladiga is on the same rail corridor as the Silver Comet Trail in Georgia. The two are expected to be joined after the Cleburne County section is completed. When the Chief Ladiga and the Silver Comet trails are connected there will be a 90-mile corridor available for non-motorized travel from just west of Atlanta, Georgia to Anniston, Alabama.

Hiking or biking up and down the former railroad.  You can camp along the way too I think.  Goes through the Appalachian Foothills and loverlee Piedmont, AL...

Tequila

Remember it like it was yesterday.  Broke up with GF, go to party at someones house I didn't even know, slam nasty tequila, get hammered, kick chairs ass after my "friends" insisted I do it.

Get into yelling match with owner of said chair, fisticuffs with owner of said chair, all the while my "friends" are watching this go down, wind up crashing through glass storm door with owner of chair coming with me.

Go to the hospital for stitches and get sewn up.  Wake up next day sore and hungover and just happen to look at my paperwork and noticed it said "patient is intoxicated and somewhat uncooperative".  Bad, bad, bad couple of days for ole AUT1.

EDIT:  I have since mellowed out and don't give a shit anymore and learned to control myself.  I can drink anything and will wind up the night telling everyone I love them and give them hugs, free bottles of booze and good cigars.  I am a pretty good drunk for the most part these days.

A little correction to the blurb you found...it is now connected to the Silver Comet trail. Together they span 90 miles straight of paved recreational path. That would be a fun 3 or 4 day bike ride there and back depending on how many miles a day you want to do. 180 miles total.

Wife was out town a couple of weeks ago, thought I’d watch the SEC cham game and MNC game as there was nothing else on. Watched both game and before I knew it had gone through almost a 12 pack of hoegarden.

After the games the music (XM-from Direct TV) got good to me and I got good to it.  To this day my dog looks at me very funny.

On a physical note: I kicked the shit out the trash can as it tried to stop me from getting my last beer. When you have had 11 beers and you open the fridge and see that last cold beer and know you have no more. You get a little depressed.

See I may still do that, it all depends on what comes across my impaired mind.  I have a friend that we can call in the middle of the night when we are drunk arguing about useless trivia, he is a fountain of useless knowledge.   He always answers and tells us he will call us back in a minute when he has a moment to think clearly about it.  He has never failed to call.  Damn good friend that guy is.

I have a number of good drunk stories I can tell.  Some are funny, some make you think, WTF are you thinking.   These stories today have made me gwaff heartily though.

and why haven't you contributed a good drunk story to this thread yet?

When I was co-oping in Atlanta there were a couple of guys that I hung out with who had been hired in right out of school (one from Miss St, the other USCe - the Jam Master Jay drunk caller) so we would drink and talk a lotta smack after work about the SEC.   Well my next to last day we started at lunch by going to this  :tits: bar in Marietta called Boomers (it also had an all you can eat buffet, and you can bet there was some high quality there, both on the stage and on your plate).

After work we went to this Mexican restaurant that had free chips and salsa, gigantic mugs of beer, and karaoke.  We finished up at the house these two guys were splitting up in Woodstock.  His place was the perfect just out of college house, hardwood floors, huge bonus room, a half working pinball machine, a cheap pool table, and an old glass bottle dispensing Coke machine full of cheap beer.

Some other people from work showed up and I was already pretty well smashed by then.  We started doing shots of tequila except for this one guys wife who refused, so I started drinking her shots also.  Next thing I know I had crawled out onto his back deck and had my chin resting on the railing so I could puke 15 feet down to the ground.  The sober wife is freaking out that I am going to die, which seemed like a pretty good idea at the time.  They got me back inside and that's the last I remembered for a while.

I woke up about 8:00 the next morning (we were supposed to be at work at 7:30) and stood up.  I had fallen asleep in the middle of his living room floor (hardwoods remember?) and something was killing my chest.  I looked down and somebody had pulled my shirt off and rolled me onto some twist off beer caps two of which were at this point were imbedded into my chest.  I went to go puke again in the bathroom, I tried opening the door to his hall bath but it would only move about 6" and then stop.  Things were getting dire at that point so I started throwing my shoulder into the door and finally I heard from the other side, "Stop it, man."  USCe guy had decided to just pass out in the bathroom and I was crushing him up against the cabinet.  I went to wake up the homeowner (Miss St guy) and he was asleep buck naked on top of his covers.

We made it to work about 9:30 with me in the same clothes I had spent most of the night puking in.  One guy came in and gave me a, "Hey, B! Heard yall tied...."  He then got a whiff and turned and high tailed it out.  I didn't get a lot of people coming up to shake my hand and tell me bye, they mostly did it from a distance.

There was also the time I took a nap while my friends went around looking for me under a truck in the AGR parking lot at Auburn.

Or the time that we had a party at my apartment at Concourse Apt's and Chris Porter showed up, which was kinda like having Snoop Dogg and Shaft all rolled into one showing up at the revenge of the nerd's frat house.

That is killing me, b/c first I have uttered the words, "please just let me die"  and have passed out on the bathroom floor thinking before I passed out "oh sweet jesus, this is cold on my face."

You drunk bastards.

Back in my much...uh....younger days, I had been known to partake of the herbal essence.  This is not a too drunk to function story but more one of those Cheech & Chong WTF just happened occasions.  Playing baseball and coming back from a road trip from scenic Selma, Alabama one night, me and 2 other guys had listened to a doobie brothers song and were kicked back, gotten kind of quiet.  I was in the back seat and just kind of staring out the window while we drove down this winding country road.  All of a sudden, the lights hit this huge cow right on the side of the road.  Must have missed him by 3 inches....it was like there and gone in a flash.

I sat up real quick and noticed that neither of the other two guys said anything or gave any reaction.  So, in my current altered state, I started questioning whether that was real or just my mind playing tricks on me.  But damn, I know I saw it.  How could they not have seen....I ain't sayin' anything.  But I know I.....it was like 2000 pounds 3 inches from the car....they had to see it......what the hell?

We drove on for about 10 more miles and no one said a word until the driver goes..."Hey...did you guys see that cow?"

Nobody could stop laughing til we got home.

I will testify to this, cause they cut me out.  We were in the new student union and due to amount of imbibed alcohol the previous evening and that very morning, I had to get to the facilities for I had to pee outta my butt.  When I finally get out of the bathroom the motherfuckers have already gone into this room and helped themselves.
Weskie did make up for it though by leaving the stadium at halftime of the Ole miss game, going to the car, refilling the seat cushion with bourbon, and coming back in before second half kickoff.  I don't remember much after that.

Peeing out of the butt is never fun but it is a sign that the previous nights drinking goals were met. I am curious as to what TV crew it was because if it was the one old Verne Lundquist is a part then GF and Wes were putting themsleves in danger.

I lived there from fall 1990 until June 1992.  But I never had that experience - of course, I was in grad school and had a lot of night and weekend classes, so I was never home.  Also, my two best friends (guys) were always with me when I was around - one was Special Forces Reserves and the other was a very large Criminal Justice major with a DO NOT FUCK WITH ME attitude - I have never been safer.

I think it was LF.  Otherwise I don't know if we'd have been there for breakfast.

That said, the halftime run to the tailgate feels like it occurred in the late afternoon, which would make it the CBS game.  My recollection of the day took a huge hit in the 2nd half.

I was talking to our IT director (old friend) this morning and we thought back to our early 20's at a time when Grandpa Jones was walking around a bar we liked to frequent, with a security t-shirt on and how he managed to bring people to the ground with ease.  Dude had to have been 70 or he lived one rough life.

Of course he had one of these as an equalizer.

For those of you who had your hearts set on hearing Flo Rida at the Gadsden Riverfest, he's canceled 2 days before the event, because of problems with his management company.

How shitty is your career when you cancel a shitty gig at a shitty event because of a dispute with your management company?  Fucking pathetic, I say.

Oh well, he's been replaced by the headline band, Sugar Ray.

How shitty is your musical career when you are called last minute because Flo Rida pulled out?  Yeesh.

On the plus side?  I actually might attend this shitty event for the 1st time in 18 years to listen to Drivin' and Cryin'.

I wouldn't mind seeing Sugar Ray...or better yet, seeing them when they were somewhat relevant.  They had a string of pretty good songs but what's funny is the songs that made it to mainstream radio really weren't of the same style SR normally played.  They started out doing some pretty hard driving rock.

They used to put on a great show, but the last time I saw them was at Spinnaker in 1993.
