So let me get this straight.  Idol hires rock star Steven Tyler and pop singer Jennifer Lopez.  Then Idol is able to convince Steven Tyler to release a pop single. 

The two finalist were in the country genre.  The winner was a throwback country singer who apparently was singing the likes of George Straight, Garth Brooks and Randy Travis?

I'm going out on a limb and saying the producers of American Idol has no clue as to who their audience apparently is.

Their audience is whoever can give them ratings and money. That show is so full of shit. To quote Elton John, its helping to ruin the music industry.
