I'll always remember him for leading the Bulldogs to a 6-3 win over Alabama in 1980. Alabama was number 1 at the time and more than any other moment in the program's history, that loss signalled the end of the era. It was the first crack in the armor. Like when Luke and Han got in and out to rescue the princess. You knew right then that the empire could be defeated. It was going to crack and fall. Bo over the top was the deathstar exploding the first time.
Of course Bama fans ignore that and will try to lay claim to him since he invented the wishbone and they were the only team to ever run that offense. They will, of course, refer to it as the "Wish Bone" which is actually a salad dressing. Even the dog was smart enough to spell it correctly as one word.

Bellard, who developed the wishbone as an assistant at Texas under Darrell Royal in the late 1960s
Of course, this is the only part of this story that made the Houston News...

A HS coach that made a big name for himself running a new fangled gimmicky offense. He was an icon in the game.

But not too sporty as a head coach. Lesson there. Some people need to stay where they are.
