Title: iPhone Jailbreakers...
Post by: AUChizad on February 06, 2011, 04:59:35 PM
The new jailbreak for IOS 4.2.1 is out now.

http://www.greenpois0n.com/

I just upgraded, and re-jailbroke.

I had an issue with AptBackup, so I lost all my Cydia apps. It was a blessing in disguise though, because I had to do the research all over again, and got some of the latest updates to those apps.

Two things I wanted to share.

1) Firewall IP is awesome. Use it as an adblocker if nothing else.
2) The new version of Install0us that came out a couple of weeks ago is AWESOME. It makes getting AppStore apps, as well as maintaining the latest versions of them SO MUCH easier than the older version of Install0us did. A MUCH needed and VERY well done improvement. If you're Jailbroken and don't have Install0us 4.0 or later, get on that shit now and thank me later.

I still haven't taken the jailbreak step with my iPhone 4.

Not sure if I should yet or not.

The answer is yes. Unless you don't like getting everything free that you're currently paying for, plus more.

No better time to do it than now, and install Install0us 4.x.

Find My iPhone location feature is free for (iPhone 4, iPad & 4th Gen iPod Touch) running on iOS 4.2.1

The only things I've noticed is the "HDR" feature in the camera, which supposedly takes better pictures, the "Game Center", which is basically like OpenFeint, as you can see from above, just a bunch of better performance.

It's usually not worth the hassle, but I always feel like if there's as clean-cut of a jailbreak release as this one, go for it.

Just back up your iPod, download the new IOS, restore all the Appstore stuff, then jailbreak with greenpois0n.

I made an attempt to backup my cydia apps with AptBackup, but it didn't work for me. Another buddy of mine said he did it and it worked fine for him, so I might have used it wrong. Either way, it's not the end of the world to go out there and redownload some of that cydia software.

I can't state enough that Install0us 4 is completely awesome, and a dramatic improvement over the 2x. version I was using before.

Speaking of jailbreaking, since I have the Droid 2.2 OS, has anyone "rooted" theirs yet?

I know wesley has teh Evo and Chop used to. RWS has one but I think its older.

Just curious. I've yet to do it because Droid is so open source anyway.

I did however check out the iPhone4 at Verizon Friday. It was ok. Not great but not bad either. I was, however, blown away by the iPAD. Loved it. Thinking of getting one next week through Verizon. Anyone else got one? Opinions?

Non-techno-guy question:  what would this accomplish other than voiding the warranty?

Short answer:

Get AppSync for 4.0+ And Installous 4.

Then get everything for free.

Probably want to change your password from "alpine" with Open SSH. Google it.

For any other questions:

I really jailbreaking does much more than rooting. Not as much return imo.

I have a Droid Eris running 2.1 that is almost a year old. I get a free upgrade in November, so I might switch over to the iPhone then. Not really sure, I guess it will depend on what all is out there. I'm pretty happy with Android, so will probably stick to that. I haven't rooted mine or anything. I'm fairly tough on my phone, so I don't want to fuck it up while it's rooted then go into the VZW store expecting them to fix it, and they give me the finger.

While I'm thinking about it: OtterBox. Best $30 ever spent.

A coworker rooted his EVO, and says that it really didn't do much for him after all...just as you said, it it already open source.  I am still on the 2.1 os myself on my Vibrant.

I actually "un" jailbroke my iPhone last night.  Restored it.  One, I might make a jump to the Atrix next week, and I didn't want to explain, or chance not being able to something with this phone (I got it less than 30 days ago as an early upgrade, long story).

I don't think I do nearly as much as I thought I would with the phone.   I actually miss having swype on my phone more than anything.  That's one of those things that you get really used to, then when it's gone, it sucks.

iDemonoid.

Fucking awesome.

You have to already have a Demonoid account, which I've tried to convince you grandpas to do when open enrollment was going on.

But this is badass. Now I can download any torrent I can think of to my computer at home through the connection to my phone.

That's pretty sweet. I know how to do my own icons. Rarely mess with that (Only did for BiteSMS's ugly ass icon. Just traded it for the regular assed Text Icon).

I'd like that AU Carrier logo and how to do it. I'm sure it's easy to find, I just rarely do customization stuff like that.

BiteSMS is a kick ass replacement to the standard text program on the phone.  I am actually not using Firefox, I just replaced the safari icon.

Just discovered these directories:
System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/TelephonyUI.framework
System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/
System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone/ATT_US.bundle/

This is apparently where winterboard alters stuff. Don't see why you couldn't manually alter stuff here.

Godfather, can you just post that AU Carrier logo png?

You can just drop it on top of /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone/ATT_US.bundle/Default_Carrier_ATT.png & Default_Carrier_ATT@2x.png, and also FSO_Carrier_ATT.png & FSO_Carrier_ATT@2x.png and that should work.

I'm sure Godfather could do some cool stuff with the keypads, lock screen icons, battery logo, etc in some of these directories.
