Title: Tarheels 0-2???
Post by: Snaggletiger on January 12, 2009, 10:39:40 AM
For the first time since Lincoln was assasintaed, UNC has started the ACC campaign at 0-2.  Quite honestly, I was wondering if they could be beaten this year.  I still think they're the best team in America but they've run into a couple of teams with guards playing lights out that night.

Everyone has been pimping the Big East as the best conference in the land but the ACC looks strong as hell at the top with UNC, Wake, Duke, Clemson etc.

Yea I didn't see that one coming.  They were the first team in a long time that I thought might actually have a chance to go from starting wire to finish line without a loss.

Does this mean that Tarheel on suicide watch right now?

Ordinarily I would say yes but since he has already posted today, Garman must have talked him off the ledge already.

I kind-of saw this coming which is why I have not been real boastful (and aside it's in poor taste to act so damn arrogant...like a Bama fan, I mean).  I write this because I don't want to sound arrogant in my criticism to follow because in all sincerity that 'ain't how I roll.'

The schedule this year leading up to the regular ACC season has had us up against teams that, quite frankly, don't match up with ACC basketball.  Our players are really good at what they do but they weren't really tested until that BC game...and, now, the Wake game ought to 'wake' them up (pardon the pun).  I saw the team that I'm familiar with in the last 3 to 4 minutes of play last night.  Were it not for that cheap time-out  by Guadio after we regained possesion we would have won it.  But I got to give credit to Jeff Teague...the kid was fantastic.

I remain cautiously optimistic about my Tarheels (and about my other favorite team, Auburn)...I'm not on the edge.

Wake looked solid.  Great guard play and strong inside game.  That place was rocking last night too.  But, if Ellington had done crap untill the last 3-4 minutes, UNC probably would have pulled it out.  Clemson looks strong but I'm not sold on them yet.  They traditionally start off hot as hell then fade.

I watched the Dookies Saturday on the road at FSU.  I was actually going to that until I remembered I'm coaching my kid's team on Saturdays.  Duke is the same as last year.  An entire team of guards and 6-8 small forwards.  Good enough to beat most teams but won't hold up against UNC and Wake with their size.

You are correct; Wake looked phenomenal last night, really solid play as you wrote, very impressive basketball playing.  I was impressed with Jeff Teague...what a kid!

I was impressed on-and-off with Danny Green last night too; he seemed to be the ONLY Tarheel to have some fire in his belly.  Everybody else looked really awkward as much as I hate to write it.

Good analysis, Birdman.

BTW, I've been to a few games at Lawrence Joel Veteran's Memorial Coliseum, being from Winston-Salem myself, and that place was almost out-of-control last night.  I don't care what anybody says the crowd can be a very strong factor in game play...those kids can feed off of that kind of enthusiasm.

Wise words to be soon tested at Beards Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
