Title: New Offer
Post by: War Eagle!!! on November 17, 2008, 03:47:11 PM
I love hearing these recruits refer to Auburn as "us". It brings a sense of pride to Auburn IMO. Several recruits this past weekend refered to Auburn as "us"...

Auburn looks good with Lutz and Cotton and McCaleb. Those 3 there are big time recruits! There are good articles from this week on Rivals if you have a subscription!

A standout senior season has shot Brantley (Ala.) athlete Anthony Gulley up the recruiting charts this fall.

Gulley's rise hit a high note this Saturday before the Auburn-Georgia game when he met with several AU coaches including head coach Tommy Tuberville and assistant James Willis.

Auburn is recruiting Gulley as a slot receiver and return specialist.
"Coach Willis said that they were going to offer me," Gulley. "They just told me that they wanted me to come play for them at Auburn.

"I was shocked. I didn't even know what to say."

Gulley said he's still trying to sort through the excitement of picking up an offer from the Tigers.

"My family, everybody is excited," Gulley said. "I'm pretty sure I'll go there. I'll probably wait a little bit to make my decision.

"Auburn is definitely my favorite team. They've been my favorite team since I was little."

The offer from Auburn came a day after Willis and assistant coach Greg Knox watched a startling performance from Gulley in a 49-18 win over J.U. Blacksher in the second round of the Class A playoffs.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Gulley carried the ball six times for 190 yards including touchdown runs of 79 and 95 yards. He also caught a 77-yard touchdown pass and returned a punt 40 yards.

Gulley totaled 307 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns on eight touches, averaging 38.4 yards per touch. What's even more amazing is that Gulley did all his damage in the first half on an ankle that's still not 100 percent.

On the season, Gulley has now scored a total of 30 touchdowns. He's rushed for 1,160 yards and 18 touchdowns on 58 carries (20.0 avg.), caught 13 passes for 461 yards (35.5 avg.) and eight touchdowns, returned two kickoffs for touchdowns (78 and 68 yards), and returned two punts for touchdowns.   :jaw:

No. 2 Brantley hosts No. 1 and defending champ Sweet Water this Friday night.

Gulley is also a standout baseball player who hit .560 with four homeruns and 39 stolen bases as a junior. He said he'd like to play both sports on the next level.

Gulley said he was disappointed in AU's loss Saturday but had a great time at the game.

"(The atmosphere) was great," he said. "I never felt anything like that before. The stadium was real packed. Auburn played a great game. Georgia is a good team too. Penalties just killed us."

I watched Gulley play earlier this year and saw him last year too.  Now granted, this is 1A ball and I saw him against a bunch of slow white boys from Providence.  My daughter is a cheerleader at Providence Christian in Dothan.  In the game this year, I watched him take the opening kickoff 75 yards for a score....take a handoff and go around left end for 90 and a score...catch a pass out of the backfield and go about 70 for a score and then pick up a punt that was about to roll dead and boogie 76 yards for paydirt.

Now, at this level, it's not uncommon to find one athlete that dwarfs the rest and basically carries the team by himself.  Brantley is good but but they're a 6-4 team without him.  The most amazing thing about what I described above is...he was never so much as touched.  Not one hand on him during any of those runs.  And the guy is so NOT a showboat.  Every time he hit the goal line, he took a step or two across and casually handed the ball to the ref and jogged off the field.  Never saw one "Me, me, me" gesture in either game I saw.  And he scored quite a few times last year.

Having said all that, I have no idea how any of that would translate to D1 SEC ball.  But, he looks like someone to at least take a long hard look at.  Also, it may be hard to get him to play football.  My understanding is that football just isn't that big a deal to him.  He loves baseball first and foremost.
