Title: 2023 War Tigers
Post by: Snaggletiger on February 02, 2023, 05:46:14 PM
The season cranks up in just over two weeks, with a 3 game home series against the Indiana Hoosiers.  The pre-conference schedule includes a trip out to L.A. for a 3 game set against USC.  They finish the pre-conference with Georgia Tech. 30 conference games, starting with the Razor Pigs.  No games this year against Tennessee, Kentucky or Vanderbilt.

It looks like we have a lot of experience returning in the field, and a good bit in the bullpen.  I don't recall enough about our starters last year to know what we have coming back.

Despite a good record and a nice run in the tourney last year, nobody thinks very much of us.  The preseason AP Poll has us at #37.  LSU and Florida hold the two top spots, with A&M, Tennessee, Arkansas and Vanderbilt all in the top 10.  Looks like the SEC will be stacked again.

Tigers took 2 of 3 from Indiana.  8-4 and 6-1 in the first two games, with great all around pitching. Rough outing for the starter and first reliever in the 3rd game, as the Hoosiers smoked us 11-2.

Tonight, they travel to play North Alabama (1-2), then it's out to L.A. for a 3 game series with USC. (3-0)

Tigers go to 3-1 with a 13-1 win over UNA.  Major storm brings major change.  USC is coming to Auburn because of a YUGE storm hitting the left coast.  Both coaches and admins really wanted to play, so they scrambled to cancel flights and get new ones booked.  Would love to see a game, but don’t know if the schedule will allow.

it’s time to stand up to mrs. snags and get your balls back…until then get in the kitchen and make her a sandwich.

it’ll be a great series. glad the teams were able to make it work.   f the pac12

I've got my balls back.  Problem is, I'm old now and they're pretty much useless.  Just kind of hang there.

Was at the game today. Bizzaro finish. Tie. And before that a run called back for usc for not touching home. Just weird.

Three game sweep of Lipscomb this weekend, puts the Tigers at 9-1-1.  6 more tune ups before they enter conference play on the road against Arky.

Did I tell you about the time Bill Clark won the World Series with a grand slam on two broken legs?  It only took him 18 minutes to round the bases.

After dropping 2 out of 3 this past weekend to SE Louisiana, the Tigers stood at 12-3-1.  I turned to the game last night against Georgia Tech, and they were already down 7-0 in like the 3rd inning.

Came back and won with a walk off single in the bottom of the 12th, to take a 12-11 win.  They had 20 hits last night. Gave up 22, but who's counting.  13-3-1.

Headed to Arkansas for 3 this weekend. Shit's about to get real.

Haven't updated in a while.  The Dudes went out to Fayettenam, and got a beat down, dropping all 3 games.  A midweek win against Samford, then took the first two from Fuck Georgia.  Had a tight game going late in the third game until FUGA scored....cough, cough.....16 runs in one inning to take a 24-7 win.  Tiggers scored about that many and smoked UNA last night.

They sit at 17-7-1 (2-4).  It don't be gettin' any easier from here, as they travel to Gainesville, to face #2 Florida this weekend.

18-9-1 (3-6) after dropping two of three in Gainesville. Took the first game 10-1.  Encouraging!  Got the shit licked out of them the next two.

Anywayz, headed to the Ham tonight to face the Dragons.

I got a feeling this will be another average year for the baseballs...
I'm not sure if we are just not getting the recruits, or if we may have hit our ceiling.

I think the hitting has been pretty solid.  They've got Ike Irish hitting something like .426.  Bryson Ware is hitting .396 with 14 HR and 38 RBI.  Several more hitting over .300.  The pitching is where it goes south.  10 guys with ERA's over 6.00

Yep, our guys are out there throwing batting practice.  Too Butch needs to let them know that the goal is for the other team to miss the ball swinging.

We need a pitcher...Not a belly itcher!

This is a fairly talented team. However, the pitching will keep us from making any noise.
Maybe we get that one good guy back and it makes a difference. But I don't see it happening.

I feel like the basketball guards are pitching for the baseball team.

Our baseball team is:

Losing 2 of 3 to one of the worse Bama teams in decades is incomprehensible.  Could have lost all three.  Up 8-0 in the bottom of the ninth in the series opener, our relievers hit three, walked two, gave up two hits and had the tying run at the plate before finally getting out of it.

Then we simpered out of the last two like a pack of drizzling pussies. Three total runs across two games.

That's SHITTY baseball. It's dysfunctional. It's almost unwatchable.

Watched all three games.  Holding LSU to a three-game run total that's right at their per-game average?  That's a pretty decent weekend.  LSU came into the series averaging about ten runs a game. They'd scored 55 in a six-game sweep of Alabama and Ole Miss. Left after scoring just 11 all weekend.

All season LSU has delivered big innings in situations where they had runners on, especially in one-out situations. Didn't happen last weekend. They had baserunners, but the big innings were thwarted.  Auburn escaped several bases loaded spots with some gutsy pitching.

It was an interesting series.  Game 1, LSU pitching dominated, but AU limited them to just five hits.

Game 2, LSU looked dominant until their pitching lost the strike zone and walks opened the door. After that it seemed like the momentum flipped and AU remembered how to hit.

Game 3 was more of the same.  321 walks in the first inning and from that point on, AU was the better team. LSU never challenged.

Other than Skeene, Skeeve or whatever his name was Game 1, AU looked better across the board, especially from the mound.  Third base scared me. That dude gave them opportunities with some really bad plays, but settled down.

Hard for me to figure out how a team could look so bad against an anemic Alabama team, barely scrape by a putrid Mississippi State (giving up 11 runs in back-to-back games) and then play like a Top 5 team for the next two series.

If you look at what Butch lost from last years great squad, it was truly going to be a rebuild for a while but he seems to have them in sync now.

anyway...yeah great series win after another one the previous week.  i'm still skeptical on the pitching.  butch has been massaging that rotation and finding the right pieces for the puzzle.  still skeptical but the pitching squad has improved...just not sure the lugs are tighten enough to make a comfortable ride.

Back to back dominant performances in yesterday’s double header. The Rebel Black Ackbar Bears were never in either game.

Been a long time since a series win in Oxford.

I hate when hope starts to creep in there.

On another note, this league is BRUTAL.  The USA Today Coaches Poll at the end of the regular season has:

Florida #2

LSU #3

Arkansas #4

Vandy #6

Tenn. #13

USCe #19

Kentucky #21

Auburn #25

I think AU is #19 in another poll.  You get zero breaks.

Hosting a Regional for the second year in a row.  Awbren opens against Penn, the Quakers, not Penn State.  Penn is 32-14.

The other two teams are Southern Miss, (41-17) and Samford, (36-23)

Troy also earned a spot in the Crapstoned Region, and will start off facing Boston College.

We picked a bad time to start sniffling glue.

Lots of extremely tentative at-bats over the last two weeks.  Little to no swagger.  Crushing strikeouts in critical situations.  Looking at pitch after pitch. Virtually no solid contact.

Three home runs in a loss to Vandy in the tournament and then the bats just died.

Oh well. Glad we could get Penn their first ncaa win in 34 years.  Fuck.

I know this wasn't Auburn, but...

I watched the deciding game in the LSU-Wake series just to see the two pitchers.  One with a weird moustache, one with weird hair.  Both likely to be in the top 5 draft picks.  Both were as good as advertised. Two really, really good pitchers flat out bringing it.  Only eight total hits in 11 innings, and a combined 21 strikeouts between starters and relievers who were equally solid. Neither team had an error. Just good solid baseball.

The game went to extras and Wake's closer lost it in the eleventh when the first pitch he threw was launched into the left field seats by a chubby, hairy LSU dude.  That's the play everybody wants to talk about. That he bombed the first pitch from a guy who'd said two days prior that Wake Forest was "pretty much unbeatable" was pretty decent karma.

That never happens, though, without a play in the eighth inning turned in by LSU's first baseman Tre Morgan. I'd kill to have that guy or somebody like him at AU.  He's probably the best defensive first baseman I've ever seen.

Situation:  Wake gets a runner on, moves him to second and then he takes third on a REALLY shitty effort by the LSU catcher on a ball in the dirt that should have been a strikeout. Runners first and third, one out.  Wake tries to squeeze the runner home.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-ux133Ofo38

It's as good a play as I've seen from a first baseman in a while.  In a weird twist it comes just days after Morgan was thrown out at the plate in the 8th in a game LSU lost 3-2 to Wake, in a very close call.  If Morgan doesn't make that play (and the catcher doesn't atone for his awful effort in letting the ball get away on what should have been the second out of the inning on a K)?  LSU's season is over, a 1-0 loss in nine in the books. Instead they'll play Florida for the title.

Didn't really have a horse in the race at all, but it was kind of restorative to watch two decent teams and a couple of great pitchers duke it out.  Ask me?  The real hero of that game - and in effect, LSU's entire season -  was the first baseman.  He's really, really good.
