I'm starting to get a little edgy waiting for college hoops to start...let's hope that it will be a better season this year...

Blue Ribbon Picks Tar Heels No. 1 In Preseason Poll

The respected annual named Tyler Hansbrough its preseason National Player of the Year.

Sept. 24, 2008

CHAPEL HILL - The 2008-09 edition of the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook will be available on newsstands and at bookstores soon, and the respected annual has named North Carolina as the top team in the nation in its preseason poll.

Blue Ribbon also picked Carolina to win the Atlantic Coast Conference for a third consecutive season and named Tar Heel senior Tyler Hansbrough as its preseason ACC and National Player of the Year.

Hansbrough, the consensus National Player of the Year last season, heads Blue Ribbon's first-team All-America squad, joining Blake Griffin (Oklahoma), Luke Harangody (Notre Dame), Darren Collison (UCLA) and Stephen Curry (Davidson). The second team is Tyler Smith (Tennessee), Tyrese Rice (Boston College), Sam Young (Pittsburgh), James Harden (Arizona State) and Damion James (Texas). The third team includes Duke's Kyle Singler and Miami's Jack McClinton.

Carolina tops Blue Ribbon's preseason national poll and is one of three ACC teams in the poll. Duke comes in at No. 8 and Miami is No. 14. Other 2008-09 UNC opponents in the Blue Ribbon preseason poll include possible Maui Invitational opponents Notre Dame (No. 3) and Texas (No. 10) and ACC/Big Ten Challenge foe Michigan State (No. 13).

Blue Ribbon's predicted order of finish in the ACC for 2008-09 is Carolina in first place, followed by Duke, Miami, Wake Forest, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Maryland, NC State, Boston College and Virginia.

I'm not sure where my other favorite team was placed in this poll (Auburn, of course).

Duke sucks...don't be ghey for Coach K!

Yeah, they've got uniforms and everything.

And we'll soon have a new basketball sports complex in which to play the game...and maybe a new coach if we don't make it to the dance this year...(notice I used the term "we" when referring to Auburn not "they").

Is it basketball season?

Has anyone transferred to the Big 10? Been declared academically ineligible? Had their father request a transfer to a lower-tier ACC school? Suffered a season-ending injury? Gone to the press with complaints about playing time?  Seen reports that AU doesn't have enough healthy bodies to scrimmage in practice?

Then no, it isn't basketball season yet.

So was Dick Vitale at Auburn's Midnight Madness and Dunk Contest?  Wait, we don't have anyone tall enough to dunk.

D.V.  is a fine example of another thing that is wrong with sports in general.

He should not be allowed to be around mange ridden animals much less college athletics.

I can remember when Dickie V was in Auburn during Auburn's glorious basketball season in 1999/2000 when they went all the way to the Sweet 16.  I was in the Haley Center Bookstore and in walks Dickie V to do a book signing at his designated spot in the store.  He was very callous and didn't smile much.  Maybe he wasn't looking forward to broadcasting that night's game at Beard-Eaves.  But his demeanor and attitude was a complete 180 degrees from what you see on TV, so since then my opinion of him has been a little jaded.

had the same experience with Corso several years back.  The Iron Bowl was that night and they were setting up that morning for Game Day (This was before that set became a mad house at every campus)  I just happened to be walking by when Corso gets out of a car.  Me and my two buddies went up and had a regular conversation with the man for a few minutes.  He was cool and there was no schtick until this one guy comes running up, making a bigger fool of himself than Corso's on-air persona.  Corso then kind of put his game face on and we walked off at that point.
