Title: At least we have Evans left....

Damn Jax State. They are a thorn in our side.

Auburn RB commit Roc Thomas visiting Jacksonville State this weekend

Matt Scalici | mscalici@al.com By  Matt Scalici | mscalici@al.com

Auburn has fought off some of the top programs in the nation, including Alabama, to hang onto their commitment from 5-star running back Roc Thomas, but this weekend the Oxford High School star and Mr. Football winner will take a visit to another in-state school.

AL.com has learned that Thomas will visit Jacksonville State this weekend, his first visit of any kind to any campus other than Auburn since taking an unofficial trip to Florida State back in June of 2013.

Thomas' visit to the FCS school may come as a surprise for some but there is a connection: Thomas' former head coach at Oxford, John Grass, was recently named as the new head coach at Jacksonville State.

The visit could generate some excitement and enthusiasm for Grass' program as he works to attract some local recruits for last minute visits.

"Right now, the plan is to make the announcement of ESPN on Signing Day at the high school but the more we've thought about it, the more we think the pressure from being here in Auburn might be something we'd like to avoid. We haven't canceled that plan but it's on the table for discussion. If Rashaan ends up picking Alabama, it could obviously lead to some reactions from the folks from this part of the state and we don't want him to feel any anxiety about that, especially if it could affect his decision."

Been coming for a while.  He was never coming here.

What's hilarious to me is that the likelihood of him ending up in a situation just like Daddy's -- stuck behind somebody better than he is -- is honestly more probable at Bama.

If he chooses them?  He's not very bright.

Malzahn will have one last chance to meet with Evans and his family on Saturday when he attends a birthday party at the Evans' home that will include hundreds of friends and family members. It will also feature another guest: Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.

"They both wanted to be there for the party and we wanted to be able to spend time with both coaches so, I guess they are both going to be there," Alan Evans said. "It might be a little awkward I guess but that's recruiting. We are glad to welcome them both and it should be a great party."

This is what I envision....

College football is giving me a sour taste.  I mean, I still want this kid.  I think he can help us win football games.  But this is really getting fucking ridiculous.

Quote
Alabama and Auburn have engaged in some heated recruiting battles throughout the years, but the battle for five-star Rashaan Evans has taken the two coaching staffs to a unusual recruiting battleground: the dance floor.

According to Evans' father, Alan Evans, coaches from both Alabama and Auburn attended the five-star athlete's grandfather's 80th birthday party on Saturday night at a hotel in Auburn along with nearly 200 other friends and family members.

"When we got to the party about eight o'clock it was a packed house at the hotel," Evans told AL.com. "We walked in and the first people we saw was the entire Auburn staff standing there on our left and to my right was Kirby Smart and the Bama staff. I was like 'This has never happened in Auburn before and probably never will again.'  How long did he leave them waiting?

"As we went in, we were pulled left and right all night from Auburn to Bama. The coaches shook hands and talked but you could tell they were there for one thing and one thing only. Then the live band started playing and the Alabama and Auburn coaches hit the dance floor. It was unbelievable. I just couldn't stop laughing."

As the coaches battled for the attention of the family, Evans said family members and friends at the party began to jokingly cheer for either Alabama or Auburn.

"It was like it was a football game but it was being played inside the hotel," Evans said. "Auburn took on Alabama and have to say Auburn stood their ground but Kirby Smart began to take over as the night went on. He was all over the place, talking with everybody he saw. You would have thought he was at home in T-town.

"Gus was obviously attracting a lot of attention as well and had a line of people waiting to take pictures with him all night."

Another member of the Alabama program was also in attendance as Evans' former high school teammate Reuben Foster was a guest at he party as well according to Evans' father.

"Reuben and Rashaan running all over the place together all night," Evans said.[/quote]

Not to become buddy-buddy with AJ McCarron, but I have to wonder how much of his recent comments have merit.  He said that the 5 (super) star mentality impacted Alabama's ability to form team chemistry and play unified under their coaches.  I've been wondering how long they can keep signing the nations most coddled ultra-athletes and not be hit with the primadonna bug.

Guys like Foster and Evans are potential cancers.  I'd prefer to win with a guy like Cass or Tre Williams than with the body ready for the NFL, but maturity not ready for middle school.

Now, now...

I've seen AUFam blasted all over the Intertrons over the last few days for "stalking' Evans and making derogatory tweeters and having mean posts on their site about his performance during this recruiting reality show.

I've laughed heartily as their "don't ever say anything mean to anyone ever, ever, ever you nasty evil man" persona has blown up in their face and they're being forced to warn their own spike meters and spike their own wieners.

So we should only speak of rainbows, unicorns and lucky leprechauns when we refer to the Evans family.

Even if they're requiring grown men to behave like court jesters for their own amusement.  Even if they're adding entire new layers of prima to all the donnas in the world.   Even if they're making Billy Ray Cyrus look like a model of fatherly decorum. Even if they're trying their best to be the "Jeremy" to Rashaan's Justin Beiber.  Even if Joe Jackson is sitting back going "Damn, these people need to stay out they kid's bizness."  Even if Joe Simpson is thinking "I should made those boys have a danceoff!"

No, we should only be sweetness and light.

But you should know that he won't come to Auburn.  We don't coddle and create legends of paper tigers.  You actually have to do something and earn your stripes.

THIS x 1000000.  I wish Coach Gus had done this right there at the party instead of participating in some stupid mockery.  "Good luck, Kirby, he's all yours.  Enjoy dealing with daddy and mommy the next three years.  Y'all can kiss my entire hindquarters.  Auburn is OUT." before hitting the door hard.

Actually, if you believe Jason Caldwell over at scout, he said Friday on the Radio that we offer Boston that means we missed on the other true safety targets (Bonney, Parker and Simmons) and that RE wasn't considered to be a part of that group.

Don't get me wrong, I would take Evans, but we are still in good shape if we don't get him.

Sure.

But if his family does cause problems and turns into a primadonna that negatively affects the team, we'll cheer for him as much as we cheered for Kiehl Frazier.

If he comes in and plays well and seems to be an Auburn guy, then we'll cheer for him under the assumption that the coaches kicked his and his family's ass.

I don't think this will happen at either school he chooses. It happens at some places but I don't think Gus or Saban would allow this, no matter how good a kid is.

Personally, I don't think there is necessarily a direct link between Alan's love of the spotlight and his potential meddling in coaching decisions. More likely from someone who would want both coaching staffs at a grandparent's 80th birthday party? Probably. But Gus is too strong of a leader to let it become a problem.

If he comes, he will play for us early and often. If he doesn't, we will still be in very good shape with a top 10 recruiting class and key position needs filled.

^^What WGT said.  I don't see Saban or Gus allowing that to become a problem.  Gus has proven that he will not put up with bullshit and I don't think they would still be pursing Evans as hard as they are or at least have an idea on how to deal with it if he got that vibe at all.

Boston is a safety. Evans is not being recruited as a safety. The Boston commitment doesn't have anything to do with Evans.

I still want Evans...I think he could be a hell of a player. If Gus and Co. still want him and are going through whatever to get him...I would like to see him wearing orange and blue. It's not you fucks having to recruit him, so why is everyone so bent out of shape about it? You only know what is being reported in the media...the same fucking media that bad mouths everything Auburn does anyway...

So like I said earlier, get your big girl panties on. If Evans chooses Auburn...great! If not, fuck it. No sense in worrying any more or any less over it than that...

I hope you're right. If so, the walls probably really are crumbling. It would be unusual to have sustained success while catering to the prima donnas. I thought that only worked long term in the NFL.

Doesn't even work in the NFL and yeah, it's cracking.

I've been around coaches and coaching styles long enough to have a general idea of what works and what doesn't.

Dictatorial regimes (which Alabama is) tend to do well at first and then crumble over the long term.  It takes a ton of effort and attention to detail to maintain absolute control.  At first it works because you come into a situation where people are desperate enough or hungry enough that they're willing to tolerate whatever you dish out if it changes their circumstances.  If the change doesn't happen immediately, of course everyone thinks you're an ass and you get run quickly.  If you get results, you are hailed as a messiah.  But absolute control is an illusion.  No one can hold that tight to all things for all time.  Eventually you're dealing with a crisis at home and winter  on the Russian front and people start to leave, turn on you, question your decision making. Another aspect of the dictatorial regime is playing favorites.  Dictators always have pets.  This works at first because everybody strives to be a pet.  Over the longer term it builds resentment because the simple fact is that everybody can't be a pet.  And it falls apart.  These can work and work well in the short term, but they can't sustain over the long haul.

At the other end of the spectrum is the short-term buddy, buddy you're my pal coach.  This also works in the short term because players feel empowered, they buy in to the idea that they've got some control and say in their future.  This fails long term because no matter what they think, the monkeys cannot run the zoo.  The coach loses control because he loses respect.  Discipline is arbitrary and again, pets come into play.  Some players are better pals with the coach than others.  Resentment builds.  Chaos ensues.  Usually the staff fractures first, so you can see the tsunami coming.

The only thing that works long term is a coach who maintains respectful distance from the players, who clearly separates the role of being in charge from being their "friend", who defines his role and the fact that he is responsible for and to them, and makes sure they understand that discipline is his duty.  He has to deal with all players honestly and fairly. Has to establish that the word "fair" does not always mean "equal."  Has to act decisively.  Doesn't ever throw players under the bus to hide his own shortcomings or mistakes.

Frankly, though, the game-planning and technical skill is less important than the rest.  Doesn't really matter what kind of defense or offense you run, the key is how you handle everything else personnel related.

All of these personality types have to have a plan. They have to understand how offense and defense works and how to build a program that effectively implements their plans.

Coaching is a lot like soap.  Hold it too tight (Saban) and it's going to eventually squeeze from your grasp.  Hold it too loosely (Chizik maybe?) and it falls to the floor.

Like how Tre Mason was. He was our fall back when Isiah Crowell committed to UGA. I think it worked out better for us than UGA. I'm getting more and more where I want solid guys who want to be at Auburn. Period. Crowell was a 5 star #1 recruit btw.

Like the .38 special song.

Drop it at Penn State, and you're no longer a tight end

Just had a meeting with a Bama-loving contractor.  He said "Rashad" Evans has been a bama lock for weeks and has been recruiting behind the scenes for them for quite a while which is gonna lead to some surprises tomorrow.

That's the consistent story I'm getting from them lately.

This is actually true.

I like Mike but he has such a macro view of it now. The guys in the trenches seem to know more now, ie Hokansen, Tate and the like.

I disagree on Hoke.  He has been stepping all over his own dick here lately.  Giving out wrong info and later having to correct it.  Not that he doesn't get the right info, but I think he needs to wait until he gets it right before going off half cocked and posting something.  Also hate the fact that if someone knows something and they post it, Hoke will make it go the way of the poof and then repost it about an hour later as his own news.  I didn't think anyone could make JLee look any less of a douche but Hoke is giving it a run.  Of course I have a little bias against our Rivals site and may not be looking at it objectively.

24/7 has the best guy imo when they hired Keith Niebuhr.  Caldwell and Murphy are good at sharing any info they have but they don't ever predict anything.  Which I guess is a good way to cover your ass.
