Title: Barbee's Boyz
Post by: Snaggletiger on October 31, 2013, 12:09:53 PM
Well round ball fans, another exciting season of Auburn basketball is about to get under way and as always, there's electricity in the air as everyone wonders if this group of Tigers will make another run at the Final 4.  As is the norm, Auburn is a heavy favorite to win the SEC again and the only question is will they be able to secure a #1 seed in the Southern Region this year and play close to home.  Only time will tell.  Already, the Auburn Arena is getting cluttered with the numerous banners being hung, but I'm sure they'll make room for one more.

I crack me up.

There's one more exhibition game to play this Friday and then the regular season starts on November 8th.  The good thing about this pre-conference schedule is they have at least added a couple more recognizable teams and every game won't be against Salem College and Devry University.  Early on, they host Murray State, then travel to Ames, Iowa to face Iowa State in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.  After that, they match up against Illinois in the ATL, then have home games against Clemson and Boston College.  I will say that under Barbee, they have continually tried to make the pre-conference schedule tougher with opponents people might actually want to see us play.

This year, the team will again look vastly different than the year before.  Hopefully, that's a good thing because Lord knows this team has been shitty for a while.  If they don't get kicked off for undisclosed violation of team rules, these dudes should play.  The main contributors from last year that return are guard, Chris Denson and forward, Allen Payne.  Size shouldn't be a problem (That's what she said) with the roster showing two 7 footers.  Pronouncing half the players' names should be a problem.  One of the 7 footers is Benas Griciunas and the other is Asauhn Dixon-Tatum.  Gricunas scored 15 in the first exhibition game and Dixon-Tatum still sucks.  Two new point guards join Denson, Malcolm Oh Canada and Tahj Shamsid Deen Abdullah Hassan Smith.  The two combined for 25 points in the win over mighty Victory while Denson scored 21.

The rest of the roster is rounded out by some other guys.  They'll play some too.

Oh yeah, and we're probably still shitty.

That's a shame.  It's a great place to sit while you wait for the football game.  It's also a great venue for Fan Day.

If they will fucking stop putting the Iron Bowl of teh roundsballs on Tuesday night...
We really need to make an outing happen this season.  It might be the last chance to get cheapish tickets, because after this year's final four berth, they will be hot commodities.

The problem with that plan is that someone with the actual tickets has to come withing miles of the arena to actually drop them.

Write up from AuburnTigers.com on the last exhibition game.  Opener this Friday night.

KT Harrell led five Auburn players in double-figures with 25 points as the Auburn basketball team defeated Paine College, 99-64, on Friday night in the team's final exhibition game. Auburn opens the regular season in a week against Nicholls State.

Harrell, who transferred from Virginia and sat out last season, went 9-for-14 from the floor, including 3-for-5 from behind the 3-point line. Two of his 3-pointers came in his 12-point first half as Auburn raced out to a 52-31 halftime lead.

Chris Denson also had a big night, finishing with 24 points on 8-for-10 shooting. The senior guard, who led the team with 21 points in the exhibition win over Victory on Monday, was 6-for-7 from the free throw line, where as a team Auburn shot 80 percent (16-for-20).

Center Asauhn Dixon-Tatum and Benas Griciunas each went for 11 points and combined to grab 14 rebounds, eight by Benas, while starting point guard Tahj Shamsid-Deen added 11 points and seven assists.

Auburn jumped out to a five-point lead, 7-2, just one minute into the game as Chris Griffin (nine points) and Harrell each connected on a 3-pointer on their first shots of the game. Auburn would maintain the 5-point lead for most of the first half before closing out the period on an 11-1 run over the final 5:14.

Auburn used a 15-0 run early in the second half to put the game decidedly out of reach. Leading 58-38 with 17:05 left, Shamsid-Deen hit a 3-pointer to start the run before Harrell went off for nine points, punctuating the run with a dunk off of a steal to make it 73-38 with 12:24 left.

Sean Morgan led Paine with 16 points while Darius Smith scored 14 and Kenny Fluellen 13.

Auburn and Nicholls State open up the regular season at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Auburn Arena. Tickets are on sale at AUBTix.com.

Another warm up (hopefully) tonight against Tennessee State.  Then the next 4 games get mo fo realz.

Iowa State

Illinois

Clemson

Boston College

Not exactly Kentucky, Louisville and Kansas, but should give us a better gauge on how competitive we might be in conference.  Outside of UK and Florida, this conference is still extraordinarily shitty.

Good Lord.  They had to pull out a 5 point win last night over 0-7 Tennessee State.

Last season was horrible.  This season could be epically shittastic.  Don't know if either of those are words but they sound appropriate for describing this program.

So far, Auburn appears to be right on track to match all previous seasons under Barbee.....and Lebo.  Shitty!  4-1 but lost to some team I can't remember the name of, which also hung about 200 on them, and has looked less than stellar against a handful of nobody's.  Get to find out tonight if they have anything fo realz as they go to Ames, Iowa to face the #17 ISU Cyclones.

Because ISU couldn't make their wide open looks. Once those started dropping, it was over. The game went from 12-5 Auburn leading, to 26-12 Auburn losing, in about 2:00...

Looks like we have one very consistent player in Chris Denson, averaging 22 points a game.  He had 27 last night.  KT Harrell looks to be solid too. However, something is just not right about anything Barbeez is doing with this program.  Then again, Leblow sucked his entire time here.  Can it ever be turned around?

I've evolved on the Barbee debate. It's time for him to go. We will have premiere football & baseball programs. We may never have a premiere basketball program, but Barbee has proven he can't even keep us in mediocrity.

Serious question: Does anyone follow basketball enough to know of an up and coming coach that could possibly garner Auburn's attention?

I follow it but I'm more along the lines of finding someone willing to take it that has been there and done that.  Don't know if it's possible to make a "splash hire" at AU given our history.  But geez Louise, I just want to be competitive and make the dance every now and then.

Maybe all it took to motivate Barbee was me finally jumping off his bandwagon.

So far, a pretty incredible turnaround since that post.

IF we keep winning (and history does not show that we will) and have a relatively successful SEC run, then he might have saved his job.

I personally hope he can. I like him and don't think we can do better, as sad that is.

they are but I'm willing to continue doing what has helped get us to where we are now. I know that Gus appreciates me. So far, I've been able to find one key tendency with their starting QB, Winston.

I've pinpointed that he tends to throw the ball down the field, toward the opposing end zone--in hopes that one of his players will catch it and run across the goal line.

They've performed this trickery many times this season. He does not receive the snap and run like hell or hand it off to an awaiting runner like we do. It's new fangled forward pass sorcery and hopefully the NCAA will do something about this.

A forward pass?  Next thing you know, they'll be running plays real fast without a huddle.  That's flat out dangerous and could cause numerous injuries to tired defensive players.

They've performed this trickery many times this season. He does not receive the snap and run like hell or hand it off to an awaiting runner like we do. It's new fangled forward pass sorcery and hopefully the NCAA will do something about this.

This brings me to my next point, men.  Don't do crack.

Well, I actually watched my first bit of Barbeez Boyz last night.  91-59 thrashing of Louisville...err, North Carolina....I mean Arizona...okay, Arkansas Pine Bluff.  7-3 on the season with one more tune up before conference play.

This is easily the biggest team we've had since Cliff Ellis corched here.  Not saying they're any good but AU can put some 7 footers on the court now.  Anyone recall Lebo's first year when they didn't have one player over 6'4" on the entire roster?

51 seconds left, down 3 with the ball.  Auburn comes down and starts launching 3's like there's 5 seconds on the clock.  Long rebound...get it out quick...launch another 3.   Was that the play you called, Tony?

There is something to be said for rebounding in the game of basketball, particularly on the defensive end. And after three tough loses in a row Coach Barbee now says "the lid is off." What first comes to mind is the heart stopping novelty item containing artificial snakes. But if we could only open our minds and look deeper into his message what he is telling us is that this team is oh so close.  War Damn Barbee!

Just listening on the radio, but what the hell was that possession all about when we got the ball at about 1:15 left, down by 3?  It sounded like there was no clear direction from the bench, they just came down, passed it a few times and then got it blocked on the eay to the basket.  I would rather have Denson or Canada pull up for a three right off the bat.

Florida went with big lineup at that point (Donovan) with the percentages in their favor knowing a drive inside would only yield one attempt. We failed miserably at the line as the game wore on.
Nice effort.

We're close to being a pretty decent team, but just can't make it over the hump. We need to recruit a couple of those 7 footers that seem to exist in abundance in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia or in the Ukraine.

The team all but disassembled when Lebo was sent packing.

I get that and all.....but then I see a school like Vandy with a similar handicap - academic standards for them - being successful in spite of it, and in all 3 major sports. Same with Duke before Coach Ratface showed up. I'm just tired of a handicap being an excuse for being a bottom dweller. Not asking to be elite or anything - just to have some decent seasons every now and then. At least we did that under Smith and Ellis. World beaters, no. But they weren't horrible either.

I mean, are other schools that have a better roundball program really getting that many AAU recruits either? There can't be that many AAU guys at Vandy, Iowa State and Miss State. And all of those teams are better.

Goto this site for the telling results: http://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basketball/team-stat/shooting-defense-category (http://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basketball/team-stat/shooting-defense-category)

Auburn is recently giving up over 50 % to opponents, same for a good Wisconsin squad that won 16 straight before going on a three game skid giving up over 55% in those three loses.

We also were outscored 28-0 by State's bench.

Our defense in the paint resembles a broken windmill on a putt-putt course.

There's a common theme among the better teams- Michigan State, Arizona, Cincinnati then in the SEC with Florida, Kentucky and even LSU-ALL STINGY! And they all regularly hold their opponents below 40 % shooting.

*I haven't searched for the exception to the rule or the roundball equivalent of Auburn football which often employs gimmicks and blind luck to dazzle its opponents.

**Kentucky (with better talent) holds UGA to 33% shooting, wins by 20.

The gators win 71-66. We were tied with :20 to go, missed a free throw, fouled the rebounder (who hit both free throws). We followed that up by throwing the inbounds pass out of bounds.

All in all, a good gutsy effort on the road.
