Title: Auburn rallies to defeat the fighting rebelackbarbears
Post by: Saniflush on March 03, 2011, 07:22:23 AM
I still believe that that we are heading the right direction.  Three conference wins and one against FSU was more than what I was expecting.

Quote
AUBURN -- Auburn came back from 20 points down to beat Ole Miss 76-73 Wednesday at Auburn Arena.

Ole Miss guard Chris Warren hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining to cut Auburn's lead to 74-73. On the ensuing in-bounds play, Chris Denson got tangled up for a jump ball. The possession arrow favored Ole Miss. But the Rebels booted the ball out of bound, seemingly giving away their final chance.

But the teams traded turnovers in a zany final seconds before Auburn could ice the game.

Rob Chubb scored two key baskets and made a big block in the final four minutes. Kenny Gabriel scored 24 and grabbed seven rebounds.

Ole Miss blew out the Tigers in their earlier meeting at Oxford, and it looked like Wednesday's game was following the same script.

The Tigers (10-19, 3-12 SEC) trailed by 16 at halftime, but Gabriel nailed two 3-pointers in the first 45 seconds of the second half. Auburn tied the game by the 10-minute mark.

Three Ole Miss players fouled out. Two of them -- Reginald Buckner and Steadman Short -- departed without scoring a point or attempting a shot.

Dundecrous Nelson scored a career-high 30 points for Ole Miss, but 19 came in the first half. Nelson made six 3-pointers before halftime, but couldn't duplicate the feat in the second half.

So, if we finish strong with a win against LSU, do you think we could land that #2 seed in the East over Pittsburgh?

So, does this mean that Barbee is a candidate for COY honors?  I didn't expect a single conference win and expected about 5 wins max.

No way.  Barbee should never have lost to Presbyterian.  They had that game and let it slip away.  I was boiling mad after that one.  Almost as mad as the exhibition loss to Columbus State. The Samford loss got me too.

In all seriousness, what does it say when two of the big 3 programs in one year have losses to the likes of Columbus State, Presbyterian, Samford, Campbell, Radford and Bethune-Cookman?

Yeah but dammit, we beat FSU.  AU>FSU>Duke = AU best team in the nation!

Actually, Duke is at #5 right now so we're at least 4th.  I still say a #2 seed is not out of the question.  Man, is Selection Sunday ever going to be intense.

Regular season closes out with a road win against LSU.  Moral victory....yes...but I agree with Sani...right direction.  Get a little talent and Barbee could do some pretty good things.

How is it a moral victory if we actually won?  Explain that one to me, mr. smarty lawyer pants.

It was a literal victory.  And fairly significant.  If we sneak up on the 4th seed out of the East and win in the opening round of the tourney, we get Alabama instead of someone from the top teams in the East.  I want another shot at them and hopefully end their NCAA dreams with an early exit from the SEC tourney.

I believe he meant moral victory for the season.

What I really like about these last two wins is that we came back fr 10+ point deficits.

Until recently, we were blowing huge leads, as opposed to blowing them for the other team.

Exactly. And, we did this with basically two SEC ballplayers on team. I love some Barbee, I just hope tey will be able to get some players in at Auburn that will stay a while.

How could I possibly be upset?

The Tarheels just crushed Dook this past Saturday night at the Dean E. Smith Center to earn the outright number one position of the ACC Regular Season.

We'll see what Coach Ratface can come up with in response during the ACC Tournament...

I think he's eating kittens and puppies somewhere in Cameron Indoor Stadium right now...

Werd.  Fell in love (Not literally...I mean...you know what I'm saying) all the way back in 78' when they went to the finals against UK.  Classic David/Goliath matchup.  I've sat firmly on their bandwagon ever since.  Why not?  As an Auburn fan I have to have something to pull for during basketball season.

Just messing with ya. Seriously though, that was always my logic during bball season. I liked unc and chapel hill at a young age. Loved watching their games. Still like Auburn, but admittedly we don't get much to cheer about in bball.

Oh I know.  I've told this before but one of my big sports thrills when I went up to a Duke game several years back, was getting on the Dean Dome floor and shooting some baskets.  As you know, Duke's gym is a dump of epic proportions.  It's just the history and traditions that makes it so historic.  We just walked in Cameron Indoor any time we wanted, full access, no problem.  The Dean Dome.  Different story altogether.  You could go in the place but you weren't getting near the floor.  Me and my buddy lied to one of the ladies in the main office about how we graduated from there and just finished a 15 hour drive to get to the Dome and how it's our life long dream to shoot a bucket or two...blah, blah, waa, waa...

She goes and gets permission and takes us down on an elevator and we ran around like kids, taking pics of each other shooting baskets.  Pretty chilling stuff to stand at half court and look around.  A lot of fairly big names on the banners hanging from the ceiling.  You may have heard of a few

Why don't you just admit that you are a Carolina fan instead of being closeted?  No self-respecting Duke fan would ever admit to that kind of reaction in the Dean Dome.

And, yes, Cameron is a dump.

Yes, the last season was terr-ble but going from a pre-season poll rating of 8 to unrated then working steadily up to 7 (or 5 depending on what poll you review) is very satisfying.

What a season it has been; looking forward to the ACC Tourney this weekend.

1. Working my rear-end off...and watching lots of college basketball.

2. Yes, again, it was a phenomenal game; I was nervous all the way until the end because Dook is very, very dangerous; I was afraid that Carolina would let up on the pressure but they didn't; they kept it on and won.  I have been impressed with the progress of Barnes, Marshall, and Zeller as they've developed this year.

3. Yes.

You know we like you...well I do...I can't speak for the others.

I have a LOT of really good friends (and family) who are Duke fans.   It's a love-hate relationship.

I want to add too, especially in the wake of the awful incident with the trees, that although it's arguably the biggest rivalry in sports, Carolina and Duke folk simply don't seem to spew the vitriol in words and deeds as Alabama fans seem to (in my opinion and experience) towards Auburn.  I still don't have the words for something so obscene and malignant.

Not sure if you are talking program here or the fans of?  If you are talking program, then you speak crazy, if you speak of fans, then I don't know.  I know that I liked them back in about 83-84'ish when I first started paying attention to sports.

Carolina has the edge and the better history, but it's not like they are dominating Duke, even for the most part, which is a good thing to me being an outsider.   Carolina has been doing it longer, but Coach K has kicked some ass since 1980.

UNC leads the all time series 131-100.  That's a lot of roundball.

Not sure if you are talking program here or the fans of?  If you are talking program, then you speak crazy, if you speak of fans, then I don't know.  I know that I liked them back in about 83-84'ish when I first started paying attention to sports.

I have to admit that he has...but, you know, every time Dook wins with Coach K God kills a kitten and a puppy.

Why do you hate Islamic dwarfs?  My buddy, who I went to Raleigh Durham with, married a Carolina girl.  He's a Dukey married to a Heel.  They have two dogs so they compromised on the names.  Cameron and Dean

So, does this mean AU will most likely secure a #2 seed in the East?

Sounds like a good friend of mine who is also a Dukey married to a Carolina girl.  They have twin boys and I keep teasing them as to which school they'll go to when the time comes...probably Wake Forest or NC State...blech...(I just threw up a little in my mouth typing that last part...)

Of course!  As soon as Barbee gets a few years to turn this thing around and win the SEC

Now, I have to admit that I can see going with a Carolina girl.  I may be a blatant Duke basketball bandwagoneer...but that's as far as it goes.  That's an ugly group of white women.

No offense to any of you that may have married a Dukette.  I'm sure there are a few hot ones but for the most part....
