Title: Cowherd says someone is going down.
Post by: AU_Tiger_2000 on March 01, 2011, 01:21:59 PM
Listening to Colin Cowherd at lunch today.  Near the end of his broadcast he said than in the next couple of weeks a major publication is going to issue a report that will take down one of the "top 10-12 college football programs" for major recruiting violations.  He said he had received tips from two credible sources on who and what this would be about, but he was not willing to say anymore on it because it was not sources that had been verified by ESPN.

He added at the end, "I will say this.  It is not Auburn."

So, top 10-12 program about to get busted for recruiting violations.  I don't know what Colin' criteria for top 12 program is, but here are my idea of some possibilities.

Auburn (but won't be us)
Bama
Tennessee
Georgia
Florida
USCe
Miami
Florida State
Va Tech
West Va
Penn St
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Michigan
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Texas
Texas A&M
USC
Oregon

If I had to take a swing at a big time program that might be up for getting the take down I would guess Bama (of course), Michigan, USC (again, which would be mega serious), Nebraska, or Notre Dame.

Putting these out there due to factors of them having top recruiting classes, a need to win at any cost (USC, Bama), get back on top (Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame), rumor mill, and reputation of coach (Rich Rod at Michigan, Callahan at Nebraska, Weiss at Notre Dame).

I don't even blink at these stories any more.

Especially if it's coming from Cowherd or anyone from ESPN.

Well he did change the tune up a little bit by saying it's not Auburn.

This is what I'm thinking.

But I'm not sure how much of it will be paying players and rogue boosters.

Texas has had issues with their female hostesses, and I know a guy lost his job for it.  We posted a link to their message board when the meltdown occurred.  I bet it's linked to that if anything.

I was thinking this or LSU to be honest.

Also seeing a lot of other rumors on other boards about Oregon being it.  I know most people don't think of them as a 10-12 type program, but they have been the past few years and Cowherd would have no problem in thinking of them that way since he is an admitted West Coast homer.

I was thinking them or OU.  Unless the NCAA, while sniffing around in Alabama, MS, and GA, stumbled on some bammer shit.  Which would be funny as fuck with them being so adament about us going down.  Or maybe Urban got caught up in it all and thats why he bailed.

Ha!  Can you imagine the way people would go crazy if the team from the NC game that got busted for violations wasn't Auburn?

Just going on what I am reading.

Still think it could be LSU. Dirty as hell.  It would be a damn crying shame if Thayer uncovered their dirt while he was down there trying his hardest to make sure we got the hammer?  Why that would break my fucking heart.

The Texas ncaa stuff has been rumored since the cam stuff came out.

Cleve Bryant, Gloria Allred, ATM cards, boosters.....pretty blatant stuff if true.

http://www.shaggybevo.com/board/showthread.php/79356-Recruitocosm-hints-at-wider-scandal-possible-big-story-about-to-break

I would think it would be a team you've at least heard something about. Even if only rumors so far. Bama would be my next guess after Texas.

Here's the deal.  I wouldn't mind something coming out simply from the standpoint of it deflecting the shit storm away from Auburn.  But as I basically asked earlier, is this what it's come to?  Is trying to get the goods on someone else what's important now in college sports?  If all was exposed today...on every one....and the NCAA had it in front of them right now.....college football would cease to exist as of tomorrow.  I'm 100% convinced of that.  It's everywhere and not just football.

Did anyone catch part of an interview with Bobby Knight and Coach K this weekend.  Knight said without reservation how corrupt NCAA basketball had become.  Jay Bilas said he had talked to a coach a couple of weeks prior and jokingly...but seriously asked, "Remember the good old days when the players were the ones that benefited from illegal payments?"  Now, it's the "agents" and parents and AAU coaches etc.

I heard this rumor last week on the-mainboard (I occasionally lurk).

The original report, the source of which I can't remember, said something along the lines of "It's a Top 10 program, but not one that anyone would expect", which pretty much eliminates the entire SEC. The way the country thinks the whole SEC is dirty, the only SEC team people may not "expect" would be Vandy, and they certainly aren't a Top 10 team.

I think that would point more towards Pac-10(2) or Big-10(2).  I don't think Texas would be a team nobody would expect.  They haven't been dirty officially, but there is tons of money floating around that school which is always a temptation.

Like Snags said earlier, I'm not generally in the "oh god let the hammer drop on these fuckers" camp, but we've got to get this damn spotlight off of us, and the entire SEC. I don't even want bammer to get in major shit because of this. Unfairly or not, the SEC's image is we are all a bunch of filthy cheaters. Can't wait for some shit to stick to a high & mighty Big 10/Pac 10 school.

I think tOSU.

The NCAA was sniffing around because of the Tyrell Pryor thing - add in Mo Clarett (I know, it has been a while... but still...) and all the other shit that rolls off of them every year, and I would not be surprised one bit.    They are a perenenial top 10, whether they deserve it or not, and nothing EVER sticks to them.

So if the hammer came down, I personally would be surprised, not because they are clean but because they actually got nailed for what they have always been doing.

Which is why I have a greater concern for the basketball program, because it was in such a sorry state and what Barbee must feel compelled to do just to compete.

I wouldn't guess Ohio State,Texas or currently sanctioned USC. Cowherd would call them top 5. Alabama and FSU are too recent to land back in trouble.
I'll take a stab at "sweetie pie" Swinney over in the state of SC. Plus, I like the way he celebrates victory prematurely. Eh, I could always say Richt, that would make Finebaum happy. Dickey isn't screwing up, nor is cud chewing Les. Spurrier no, Michigan perhaps but top 15 even? Not anymore! FLORIDA...hmmm...nope it's Clemson and that's my final answer.
Quick, tell me what I won Johnny.

Clemson isn't near top 10 status.  It isn't Bammie because Prowler's skreets would have produced at least a tiny nugget of information/rumor/innuendo gold by now.

SPuat first then Oregon.  The new information will be about Oregon.  The SPuat dealio is coming from people in the know.  They're being looked into as I type, REC business', Car Lot(s), etc. That would explain the constant venom being spewed towards Auburn in an effort to direct attention away from their program.  They might want to wait before they bolt that statue in place.

While this is A story, I do not think this is THE story Cowherd speaks of. This handler (Lyles) has sent many guys to schools, not just Oregon and Bama. Its pretty common knowledge. Oregon is also not a Top 10 program. They have been ranked in the top 10 recently but they are not a top 10 program.

Best bets:

Texas
LSU
Tenn

Maybe USC, but I doubt Cowherd would shit on his own love fest school.

The sportsbybrooks tweet references TCU being happy with something coming out tomorrow. The only thing happening that would benefit them would be Texas going down. TCU would own the state at least for a little while in recruiting and wins.

My guess is that if Cowherd is in the loop it's probably west coast.  He's an unabashed USC homer so anything that helps the Trojans would be on his radar.

That's why Oregon makes the most sense to me.

Michigan would be my second guess.  For no other reason than I like the Maize and Gold and it would piss me off.

The TCU being happy twat is probably unrelated.  Lots of schools would benefit before TCU.   A&M, Baylor, Tech.

OK is the main competitor but TCU would DEFINITELY be the top competitor in terms of recruiting over the last few years.  Patterson has done miracles, plus TCU is a private school in the DFW Metroplex - all the attraction of the Big D and Cowtown.

Not the Ducks:

Quote
Shortly after Cowherd’s words hit the airwaves, John Canzano of The Oregonian was contacted by, he writes, “several national college football writers after those early rumors began to point at the University of Oregon being that program.”  An Oregon source denied they are the football program in question.

Made some calls. A reliable source high in the athletic department said everyone there was ”surprised” to hear about the rumors. They have not been contacted by the NCAA on this matter, nor anyone else.

Said source: “We haven’t heard a peep from the NCAA. If there was something going on, we’d typically hear about it way beforehand.”

Ducks coach Chip Kelly said he was also unaware of any violations. Kelly attributed the rumors to the program’s recent national success. Said Kelly, “We’re going to have to endure some of this.”

For the record, Oregon is not the school we have heard connected to these rumors.  Nor is it Auburn.  Nor will we mention the school’s name we’ve heard floated around as it’s not been remotely confirmed.

Suffice to say, though, it’s going to be a very interesting next week or so around the [school redacted] campus if the rumors come to fruition and the allegations that are currently making the rounds are published.

It has to be Sports Illustrated.  It could be another NYT hit piece... but since it is not Auburn, I am guessing that takes the NYT out of it...

Or maybe it is... copied from ShaggyBevo.  None of the t-sips seem to be in panic mode... and then I read this:
Quote
Its Oregon, Its a SI investigation

Taken from Oregonlive.com:

It's a Sports Illustrated investigation, not an NCAA investigation. When the story comes out tomorrow (as originally scheduled), the NCAA will have to examine the evidence and reach their own conclusion of what rules were broken. Actual sanctions could take 6 months-2 years to be handed down.

So of course they haven't "heard a peep" about NCAA violations.

From what I can gather, the investigation revolves around the recruitment of Lache Seastrunk, Tahj Boyd, and Anthony Wallace. All three had the same "family adviser" (agent) named Baron Cortez Flenory Jr.

Google Mr. Flenory's name, and you'll get a preview of what's going to be in the SI article.

Did anyone say that the NCAA has been involved yet?  I thought it was just news coming out soon about a Top 10 - Top 12 Program...not necessarily involving the NCAA yet.  So, with Oregon taking DeAnthony "Black Mamba" Thomas away from USC, hailing from Texas and Lache Seastrunk.  I still say that the story is about Oregon.  I'm not sure what Brooks is talking about regarding TCU being happy....guess we'll see soon.

You guess this is why all the schools except Oregon dropped of the recruiting map for Lache right before NSD? I still say this has something to do with James too.

You know, Oregon is new to this top ranked team bizz. They are probably 2 decades behind on how to cheat and get away with it.

The influence Phil Knight exerts on the athletic program is a clear cut case of lack of institutional control.

Even if they are not the targets, they will be one day.

Best bets:

Texas
LSU
Tenn

Maybe USC, but I doubt Cowherd would poop on his own love fest school.

The sportsbybrooks tweet references TCU being happy with something coming out tomorrow. The only thing happening that would benefit them would be Texas going down. TCU would own the state at least for a little while in recruiting and wins.

Cowherd's a bandwagon jumper of the first class.  To him Oregon would definitely be a top 10-12 program.

I mean, they are a Top 10 Program.

He didn't say they have been for 50+ years.

This last year, they were in the National Championship game, and ended the year at #3, only because TCU remained undefeated. They were #1 for most of the year.

Just sayin.

For real. When I saw that article a while back on how much of an influence Knight has with the Oregon program, I actually got scared for them...ok, not really scared but you know what I mean. If this guy was running the show in the SEC like this, his team would have been canned twice by now.

Ducks coach Chip Kelly said he was also unaware of any violations. Kelly attributed the rumors to the program’s recent national success. Said Kelly, “We’re going to have to endure some of this.”

Yeah Chip, you can bet your ass on that one.

NCAA has a chat with top Oregon signee
Posted by John Taylor on March 3, 2011, 12:29 PM EST

ESPN radio’s Colin Cowherd created a bit of a stir, to say the least, a couple of days ago when he revealed that he’s caught wind of rumors that “a major program in this country is going to be outed very soon for major recruiting violations.”

While Cowherd did not reveal the major program, the speculation soon began to point heavily in the direction of Oregon.  In fact, ESPN sources told our buddy Brooks of SportsByBrooks.com that it was indeed the Ducks to which Cowherd was referring.

Two days later, an item that may or may not be related to the rumors Cowherd’s heard — and, to be fair, we’ve heard as well — has surfaced.

In a tweet posted to his Twitter account early this morning, Oregon signee De’Anthony Thomas stated that he spoke to the NCAA on Wednesday.  Thomas didn’t get into specifics, but, based on the “caps lock” button getting stuck, it didn’t sound like he enjoyed the experience.

“JUST GOT. OUT OF A MEETING WIT THE NCAA PEOPLE MAN IT FELT LIKE I WAS TALKING TO THE POLICE,” Thomas cyber-shouted very early this morning.

So, is this a part of the process of the Oregon football program being “outed for major recruiting violations”?  Not necessarily.  As noted by Bryan Fischer of CBS Sports.com in a tweet in response to the “uh-oh” vibe Thomas’ tweet induced, “[t]he NCAA speaking to Thomas doesn’t mean there’s violations going on in Eugene. They’re just speaking with him, do it w/ many recruits.”

The back story behind Thomas and his recruitment, though, makes this development a very intriguing potential data point.  Thomas, a five-star recruit who was the No. 5 player in the country according to Rivals.com, was long thought to be a very solid verbal commitment to USC.  The weekend before signing day last month, however, Thomas took an official visit to the Ducks, fueling speculation that he was leaning away from the school in his own backyard — he went to Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles — and toward the Trojans’ Pac-12 rivals.

Despite the fact that he did not publicly renege on the verbal he gave USC in May of 2010, Thomas announced at a press conference Feb. 2 that he had indeed faxed his Letter of Intent to Oregon, completing one of the most stunning flips of the 2011 signing period.

It was certainly a staggering and unexpected development for Lane Kiffin & Company, losing such a talented player from, literally, their own recruiting backyard.  Certainly, Kiffin and/or someone associated with the USC program wouldn’t have been so incensed over losing Thomas to a conference rival that they would’ve turned… no, no way.  That simply would not have happened.  Impossible, I say.

Again, Thomas speaking to the NCAA does not necessarily mean that the rumors connecting Oregon to potential recruiting “issues” are accurate.  It is, though, one helluva coincidence.

In reality, this is no different than the NCAA talking to the folks in Louisiana regarding Auburn.

They. Do. It. All. The.Time.

It's part of their standard process.  Now, though, people are looking for targets.

There's a VERY high probability that select Alabama recruits were contacted and asked the same standard questions.

Uh yeah. That' the ol left side telling the right...anyway you get the picture. I'm content with a relative period of peace and tranquility among programs and investigations by the NCAA.

Just  :poke:

But yes, tranquility would be nice but don't hold your breath in this day and age. In years past, it would be like, "I can't wait till fb season so this dumb shit would die down". This last year fucked that up.

That boy good....MmmHmm.
