Title: Great Start
Post by: Snaggletiger on November 22, 2010, 01:15:32 PM
Hey, I know AU is just 1-3 but not even Kobe and the Lakers could survive a murderer's row like our Tigers have faced so far.  Duke, I love ya' and glad you're #1 but you know good and well you'd be way down the pecking order if you had already faced:

North Carolina.....asheville

Samford & Son

Campbell Camels (Yes, they're the Camels)

Middle to Lower East Upper Tennessee State

Wow....just wow!!!

Well...there's certainly no shame in losing to North Carolina and Stanford to start the year.

Not saying this to make Auburn sound any better because it looks like their level of proverbial suckage is legit.  But, it looks like we could have another Butler or two or three if the early OOC games mean anything.  I don't think I've ever seen so many small schools and mid majors knocking off the big boys on a nightly basis. It's not one or two games, it's a whole bunch of games where the David's are whipping the Goliath's.

There's some theory I've got on the level of greatness the Football team has is a direct contrast to the amount of suck the basketball team will have, and vice versa.

1998-99?  5-6 vs Sweet 16
2003-04?  Nall Ball vs Sweet 16 run (But I would argue the football was disappointing that year)
2004-05?  13-0 vs no post season
2008-09?  5-6 vs NIT Final Four
2010-11?  12+ win season vs lol

If we win 1 in Sec play Barbee wins coach of the year.....
Title: Re: Great Start

And yet, in the purest rivalry ever known to collegiate sports, Alabama vows not to let Auburn take home the crown of suckage in the state by getting their asses handed to them in the form of double digit losses on a nightly basis.

Seriously.  2 fucking teams in the SEC are without winning records.

Watched the second half of last night's game with South Florida.  Just a suggestion on the Basketball Iron Bowl trip.  You may want to peek in at the arena, take a few mental notes....then leave to start drinking heavily.  This team sux beyond normal suxage.  It's a new level of sux.  As a matter of fact, when the game was over last night, the announcer said simply..."This is not a very good Auburn team".

The fact that anyone would even remember it to begin with, after all of the alcohol, will be an achievement in itself.

Walk around...take camera phone pics so you'll be able to refresh your memory later.  Here's Sani with a beer in front of the arena. Here's Wes with a beer in the lobby.  Here's Sani again with another beer standing at mid court.  Here's Garman asleep.  Here's a pic of Wes' ass as he runs out the door with a beer being chased by the security guard.  Here's Sani with a statue of some sort in one arm...and a beer in the other hand.

Affirmative..however, I've negotiated for some free Conference Center thirsty towels and 2 days of Continental Breakfast 15% off on your next stay. I'm working on having them throw in a Swedish Massage if you book in the off season.  (Don't think I can work a happy ending into the deal.  You may need to bring extra cash)

Tigers Solid In Victory Over USC Upstate, 68-54  hahahahah

Auburn - Earnest Ross scored 16 points to lead four Tigers in double figures as Auburn defeated USC Upstate 68-54 in Auburn Arena on Tuesday. Frankie Sullivan added 14 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals in 28 minutes in his third game back from injury.

Auburn (4-7) scored 11 straight points to break open a 39-38 lead midway through the second half to take control at 50-38 with 9:58 remaining. In the decisive run, Sullivan nailed a 3-pointer and Earnest Ross made two treys for the Tigers. USC Upstate (2-9, 1-1 Atlantic Sun) never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

"It is huge for the psyche on the team," said Auburn head coach Tony Barbee. "Those guys have been giving me everything that I have asked for in practice. They have worked hard. They are getting after it.

"I told them I hope Santa puts some more patience under my Christmas tree. I hope Santa puts a little toughness and grittiness and some meanness under their trees because we are lacking in those areas. We have to get some of that to compete against some of the teams coming up on our schedule."

The Tigers pushed their lead to as much as 16 on a break-a-way slam dunk by Allen Payne with 42 seconds to go. In the second half, Auburn shot 55.6 percent from the field, 4-of-8 from 3-point range and 15-of-20 (.750) from the free throw line while outscoring Upstate 39-28.

The game was close throughout the first half until Auburn scored five straight points, all by Josh Wallace with a 3-pointer and a layup, to take a 27-20 lead five minutes before the half. Wallace finished with a career-high 13 points and four assists. Upstate closed to within 29-26 at the half.

"It feels really good," said Sullivan. "you are not going into the break thinking Coach is going to run you to death when you get back because you didn't play hard enough because you were focused on going home. We actually put it together before we went home, and it is great to get a win."

Kenny Gabriel added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks for the Tigers while Tony Dukes led the Spartans with 13 points and Torrey Craig and Chandler Hash had 11 points apiece.

Auburn shot 46.3 percent from the floor for the game, 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from 3-point range and 74.2 percent (23-of-31) from the foul line. The Tigers' defense held USC Upstate to 36.2 percent shooting from the field and 29.0 percent (9-of-31) from behind the arc.

Auburn has eight days in-between games as it returns to action against Georgia Southern on Dec. 29 at 7 pm Central in Auburn Arena.

Auburn wins overtime thriller against Georgia Southern in matchup of Division I bottom-dwellers
Published: Wednesday, December 29, 2010, 10:44 PM

By Evan Woodbery/Auburn Bureau, The Birmingham News, Press-Register, and The Huntsville Times

AUBURN -- At the beginning of the overtime period, Auburn coach Tony Barbee approached players who had slumped shoulders and exhorted them to perk up.

"There were heads were hanging and I could see it," Barbee said. "I told them, 'We've got five more minutes to win this game. This is winning time.'"

The Tigers overcame what would have been one of the most dramatic collapses in recent school history to regain their composure in overtime and defeat Georgia Southern 88-84 Wednesday night at Auburn Arena.

The Eagles used a 15-0 run to cut Auburn's lead to 10 in the second half. GSU outscored Auburn 51-24 in the second half after the Tigers led 52-25 at halftime.

The game was a matchup of two of the nation's worst teams, one from Southeastern Conference and one from the Big South. Both squads were limping through bleak seasons and were ranked near the bottom of 345 Division I teams in the ratings percentage index.

Yet they produced a game that was riveting in its own way.

Auburn (4-7) was dominant in the first half, shooting crisply, executing fast breaks more effectively than at any point this season and playing solid defense.

The Tigers seemed to be cruising toward a blowout, but Barbee anticipated a closer second half.
"At halftime I jumped on them pretty good," Barbee said. "When you have a young team like that, they go into the locker room and take a big sigh of relief and say, 'This game's over, and we can just go and mess around.'"

Instead, the Eagles (4-10) methodically worked their way back into the game. GSU hit a barrage of 3-pointers against Auburn's zone and forced 15 turnovers in the final 20 minutes.

"In the second half we got too complacent with the lead," said Kenny Gabriel, who scored 15 points off the bench.

Earnest Ross had a game-high 20 points, while Frankie Sullivan added 17 points and five assists. Rob Chubb had 12 points and eight rebounds before fouling out.

Barbee announced after the game that sophomore guard Andre Malone had left the team over the Christmas break.

Malone was averaging 11.7 points per game, second only to Ross.

"Andre thought this was not the right fit for him, and I agree, so Andre's going to look for another place to play," Barbee said. "He just felt it wasn't the right fit, and I agree."

Barbee said one of the concerns expressed by Malone was seeing his minutes "dwindle" with the return of Frankie Sullivan from a knee injury.

"I want guys who want to be here," Barbee said. "I wasn't going to beg him to stay."

Barbee dismissed concerns about missing Malone's production: "There's a leading scorer on every team in the county, even those who haven't won a game."

Auburn has a day off before hosting Grambling Friday at 4 p.m.

Evan Woodberry doesn't do us any PR favors, as usual.

Who drove him to the Arena?

It's not Woodberry's job to paint a pretty picture.
I saw nothing in his article that was not true.

I am continually reminded of this when I think of AU basketball.

As a beat writer, I feel like it kind of is.

I want to roll my eyes at the :wartim: coming out of our beat writer.

I guess really anything he puts in the papers remotely negative about Auburn, even if it is undeniably true, is magnified to me by the fact that he's a bammer grad that constantly puts digs in where he can.

That's fine for Joe Schmo sports writer, but I'm not cool with that from our beat writer.

See this is where we will agree to disagree.

When Auburn pays his salary then he can write about all the rivers of chocolate flowing down Magnolia Avenue, but until such point and time he has no responsibility to sugar coat the truth.(nor should he)

We rake media people over the fire pit for not doing fair reporting. Why should this be different?

I have noticed how this team seems to be making slow but steady improvement since beginning SEC play.  They were down 174-6 at half to LSU.  Kentucky only had them by 93 at intermission and now on the road in Starkville, they fought back from a 19 point early deficit to only lose by what...19?

Baby steps.
