Title: HTC EVO
Post by: wesfau2 on August 04, 2010, 03:56:57 PM
I can't find one of these fucking things to save my life.

Sprint doesn't have them.  None of the local independent Sprint stores have them.  Best Buy quit selling Sprint and Radio Shack doesn't have any.

No one knows when they'll get more or how many they'll get when a shipment does arrive.

Anyone have tips/tricks on getting the ridiculously hard to obtain EVO?

I guess that's what I have to do.  I just don't understand the bottleneck.  It has to be intentional.  It doesn't really help them out, though, because it just pisses me off.

I have a Droid Eris by HTC, but I really want an Incredible. Basically the same phone, I know, except the Incredible has more ass behind it. Plus, I think the Incredible will see more OS upgrades since it has the processing power to handle more stuff, whereas I think the Eris is pretty much stuck with Android 2.1.

Was truly the last place I looked.  Hate dealing with them.

I'm a little leery that something is going to fuck up.  They had 3 choices: 1) buy a phone ($549.99); 2) Add a line ($199.99); 3) upgrade your phone ($199.99)

I opted for the upgrade, but kept getting questions about porting my number and it looks as though they're trying to establish a new account with Sprint.  I may have screwed the pooch (accidentally closed a 7 yr acct), but we'll see.

Doubt it.  Looks like you have found a loophole to me.  Sprint will probably make it right if teh walmarks fucks it up.  It's funny though everyone is saying how large it is and out of curiosity I put the calipers to my HTC Hero.  They are almost identical in overall size, just a different shape and more screen.

Just talked to Sprint.  They can make it all ok if walmart fucks up.

Now, as long as WM isn't blowing smoke up my ass about the phone being in stock (and taking my $18 for overnight delivery), I should have a new toy by Saturday at the latest.

Yeah, its def the cats ass. They should be rolling out Android 2.2 here shortly. Mine had 2.1 when I received it and its not bad by any means. The kicker with the Incredible is the Snapdragon 1 Ghz processor. Holy fuck....I took a test drive on the Moto Droids and they just didnt impress much. The Droid X is extremely clunky and the processor didnt seem as fast. I didnt dig the physical keyboard either the Motos had.

Just got a call from a very personable and friendly Wal-Mart rep who informed me that the EVO is OUT OF MOTHERFUCKING STOCK.  Mine should ship sometime around August 30.

We should hire her just to be our few groups cart girl.  This is going to be serious business.  We can't be waiting on some poor employee's soul to hit us once or twice.

I see gulligans happening.  Lots of them.

I had no time to devote to the phone after delivery.

That is not a complaint, just a statement of fact.

I'm working with the phone to get familiar.  It is sleek and beautiful and slutty.  And way more advanced than me....so if you have tips, post those motherfuckers.

Apart from my phone dumbassedness, it is pure sex.

It does.  That's my only real complaint so far.

Drove from Destin to Tampa yesterday and didn't use the phone very much at all, but had to recharge when I hit the hotel to be able to use it while at dinner.

So....tips on extending battery life are very much appreciated.

Make sure you are running "Advanced Task Killer" it's free from the marketplace.

Turn the wifi hotspot off unless you are using it actively would be my first two suggestions.

This.  Also make sure the gps is turned off.  If you're in a spot or time that you don't need for it to be searching for emails, you can turn the mobile network off.  You'll still get txts and calls, but it'll chill on the net until you're ready again.   There are also extended life batteries available also.

Androidcentral.com

Droid-life.com

....good sites for info.

A few things you can do......

Change the screen brightness in your settings. Unless you are a blind hobo, you should still be able to see it fine if you turn it down halfway from where it is stock.

Create WiFi, GPS, and Mobile Network widgets. Create a Bluetooth widget as well if you use it enough that you would need to toggle it on/off. Your phone might be different since it is an EVO, but they are both HTC, so try:
Long press on an open spot on the screen you want it on>HTC Widget>Settings>Pick the widget you want placed on the screen

Leave them off until you need them, then turn them back off when you don't. It's just a matter of hitting that widget to turn on/off. I always turn the network off when I'm not using it. I don't need to know the second I get an e-mail, and I don't give a shit that somebody just sneezed on Facebook. If you are the same way, there is no reason for the internet to be running on it while it is in your pocket.

As kind of a redundancy thing to keep the phone from going on the internet:
Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks>Uncheck "Enable always-on mobile data"
Again, it might be a little different since they are different phones, but.....

A good way to see a numeric percentage of battery life:
Long press on an open spot on the screen you want it on>HTC Widget>Battery
I can't remember if this came stock or if I had to press the "Get more HTC widgets" thing, but it is handy. My phone has been off charge since 7AM and is at 68%. I haven't used it much except some texting, but I am in a room where I barely get reception, so it's searching for signal alot.

Not sure if you're using this yet, Wes, but if not....

You need to check out Swype for your EVO.  It's an alternative keyboard, and it rocks out over the standard one.  Pretty quick and easy to get used to, but look it up and check it out.  I think you'll like it on your EVO.

Can't find it in the market searching "Swype".  Might it be known as something else?

Also, does anyone have problems with the time stamps on their texts getting all fucked up?  My outgoing texts show the correct time, but incoming are all out of whack.  Makes it tough to follow a convo when one is drinking.

Just got the Samsung Vibrant yesterday, and Swype is one of it's "selling points."  I am getting used to it, but it seems like a great idea so far.  This phone is badass, and is supposed to be their answer to the EVO.
