New Auburn men's basketball coach Tony Barbee appears to have wrapped up his first, abbreviated recruiting class.
Power forward Luke Cothron, a Huntsville native who now attends Flora Macdonald Academy in North Carolina, has committed to the Tigers and will sign shortly.
The news was first reported by Bryan Matthews' on his outstanding Auburn blog.
Another Huntsvillian -- forward Josh Langford -- signed with the Tigers last month.

Tide closing in on coveted hoops recruit Luke Cothron

Cothron.jpgForward Luke Cothron averaged nearly 30 points per game this past season (Photo courtesy of HighSchoolOT.com)It's no secret that an underwhelming first season on the court has only heightened the importance of a first full recruiting class at Alabama for basketball coach Anthony Grant.
Grant signed two players in November, and eight days before the beginning of the sport's late NCAA signing period, Grant appears to be nearing his biggest commitment to date for the Crimson Tide.
Red Springs, N.C., power forward Luke Cothron, a 6-foot-8 player who is rated by Rivals as the nation's 33rd-best prospect for 2010, has narrowed his list to Alabama, Auburn and Marquette, according to an update today from Rivals' basketball recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer.
That news eliminates formidable powerhouses Kentucky and Tennessee. And as Meyer notes, Cothron has visited Alabama but has yet to visit Auburn or Marquette, which is a pretty clear indicator that the Tide is in good shape. Another important note: Cothron is originally from Huntsville and grew up an Alabama fan.
"There are several things I really like about Alabama but the biggest is Coach Grant," Cothron told BamaOnline.com in a recent story. "Ever since the first time I talked to him I have really been impressed with what he has to say and the way he runs his program. It also doesn't hurt that Alabama is the home-state team for me and a team I grew up pulling for. I have always liked the fans at Alabama and the atmosphere they can create when things are really going good.
"A lot of people talk about how the fans at Alabama and Auburn don't get excited about basketball but that's just not true. They are just like any fanbase, they love a winner."
Cothron committed to NC State originally but chose to reopen his recruitment, and he's the kind of player who could contribute immediate on a thin Alabama front line.
They didn't want him anyway.

This is great news.
You might want to edit your thread title, though.
Just sayin'.
-
It's just a good thing they backed off because he has grade issues.

I like to put women on a pedestal. High enough where I can see under her dress.

Coach Barbee, in the month or so that he's been at Auburn, has done more in recruiting the State than Coach Lebo did his last TWO years.

I think you guys are being harsh on Lebo. He clearly wasn't given enough time.

Auburn coach Tony Barbee comments on signing of forward Luke Cothron
By Evan Woodbery
May 07, 2010, 6:45AM
AUBURN -- Luke Cothron is officially an Auburn Tiger.
The Huntsville native and North Carolina prep school standout signed a letter of intent to play for new coach Tony Barbee on Thursday."
"Luke gives us a different level of talent," Barbee said in a university release. "He is an immediate difference-maker for us along the front line. He is a guy who has the ability to score in a variety of ways, inside and out. He has a knack for being around the ball, which makes him a great rebounder."
Cothron joins Josh Langford, who attends Huntsville's Lee High, as the second player in Barbee's abbreviated first class. Barbee inherited six signees from former coach Jeff Lebo, but two players opted to go elsewhere and were released from their letters of intent.
Cothron is listed at 6-9 and is expected to play power forward in college. Rivals.com ranks him as the No. 45 overall recruit nationally and 11th-ranked power forward.
"(Cothron) wants to be a part of a winner in building something special," Barbee said. "He is going to go a long way in helping us reach those goals while at the same time, we will help him reach his."

So what happened with this guy?
Academic issues. Clearly we don't have people changing grades and taking tests for players. Has anybody ever been declared academically ineligible who signed with that other shit eating school?
Okay, I get academic issues. But he went to Connecticut. He went to New Orleans. He's going to Idaho. (and if he was homesick in Conn, just wait until he gets to the 'ho). But there's a Scarbinsky article out there where he says Baylor and Alabama are the schools he would look at if he ever spends enough time at one place to get re-eligibile-ized.
When it comes to reconsidering AU? Scarbinsky says "not a chance."
Just curious why.
