wes...I know you think he's doing this on purpose. But I aint buyin it.

Now...onto the topic at hand:

I've been on the fence about this hire since the rumblings started, and I've decided that I hope it happens. Nobody goes 17 straight seasons with 20+ wins by not being able to recruit or coach.

Scratch Tubby Smith off Auburn's list? Sure sounds like it.

Tubby Smith.
Minnesota coach Tubby Smith issued a very firm denial of any interest in any job, including the vacancy at Auburn.

Here's the extremely long and sort of stream-of-consciousness quote from today's Star-Tribune.

"Well, it's sort of [that] in this business, (having your name mentioned for other jobs) beats the alternative, that's how I look at it. It's a distraction, but you have to use it as a positive, and that's what I'll do when I go in to talk to players and recruits: 'Who would you rather be playing for, son? Somebody that's going to get the job done?' ... and I'm not being arrogant or being boastful, I'm just saying.

"There's no truth to it. I'm not a candidate for any other job. I always talk about the joy -- happiness is very temporary, so you have to be, because I'm not happy now because we lost our last games, so I'm preparing for next year as hard as I can prepare.

"I'm going out and I'm selling this program, selling the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, that we've got people here on our team, we've got administration [that] is backing us, we've got things in place, we're preparing to build a new practice facility. That's what I came here to do, and certainly I'm a guy that wants to fulfill my responsibilities to this program. You're right, it can be a distraction if you let it, just like anything else. External distractions, I tell our players a lot, 'Hey fellas, we have to limit or eliminate as much of that static and external distractions [as possible]. If you're ever going to be successful, you're going to have to learn to just dismiss it, fellas, and not pay any attention to it.' "

Denials happen a lot in the coaching biz, obviously, but Smith has now rebutted the Auburn rumors twice since his team was eliminated from the NCAA tournament.

Even if he's not off the list entirely, it might be wise to move him down a few notches.

We'll have more on the search for a new men's basketball coach all this week.

Not saying this isn't true or won't happen....but he said these same type things at UGA and Kentucky before he bolted. It could be genuine this time but its hard to tell when someone has done it before.  As Kaos loves to hear: Only time will tell.

I don't see ANYTHING in this statement that leads me to believe he is not thinking of coming to Auburn. He just uses the same, "I am focused on MN, W ehave a new practice facility, I have the support that I need, yada yada yada".He has not denied actually coming to Auburn. Until he does that, it's all coach speak.

I mean, really. Winters freezing your ass off and never getting to go outside. Or great southern weather where you can recruit without snow tires. And a chance to stick it to UK and UGA again. What more could he ask for? Oh yeah, a new arena.

As much as I would like to believe it, I cannot. Too much apathy surrounding the program scares big names away especially when the heads keep chirping about the current salaries at a football school and Frankie Sullivan the only returning starter. It's actually a better situation to come into when there are looming sanctions but talent available. Go for the Rifleman and a degree to be named later. Ask Larry Bird what kind of sport basketball is and let 'em fix it on the run.

Ah, I skimmed over the "as early as" portion of the post.

As early as Monday, as late the Monday following the apocalypse.

I have been hearing very small murmurs that JJ wants to pull another Chizik out of his hat. So he has been quietly talking to Mamadou N'diaye. The rumor is that N'diaye will be surrounded by a basketball savvy team of interpreters to help get the players motivated. This will at first seem to be a terrible hire, but after AU wins the SEC west, fans will love the hire........

Mamadou has been trying to revive the basketball program at Zwimbabwe Jr. College in Kenya. He has a 12-47 record in 2 years but that's not indicative of his coaching prowess.  Everyone knows that ZJC is a basketball waste land and their facilities pale in comparison to those of an SEC program.

I for one would go to the airport in Opelika to greet Coach N'diaye and Mr. Jacobs.
