Title: HD Camcorders...questions
Post by: Thrilla on November 25, 2009, 11:38:06 AM
So I have camcorder that records in HD.  I have a shit-ton of footage on there and now it's time to transfer it to some media to share.  I don't know where to start, so if anybody has experience with this, your advice would be appreciated.  I need to know:

A) What program you use to burn the movies from your HD camera to a Bluray disc.  It may be as simple as inserting the data card from the camcorder into a laptop and burning it, or using a USB connection or mini-HDMI to connect the camera to a laptop.  I'm wondering if I can also burn the movies to a regular DVD?

B) What programs are good for home movie editing...before you burn them to any type of disc.

I'm looking at putting together about a year's worth of home movie footage of my 13 month old as Christmas gift to the grandparents, so I'd like for it to be somewhat edited (like when I start cussing when he's getting into the toilet, etc.)  I was thinking of burning them regular DVD's, and making myself a Bluray.  I literally have no idea where to start...so thanks and I'll hang up and listen.

All stories of infidelity and child pornography aside.....

No technical gurus able to chime in on this one?  Guess I'll rely on self-guided research and the advice of the friendly Best Buy agent.  I'll post anything useful I find.

The last one I bought was 7-8 years ago, was a Sony and was damn good but I'm sure WAY out of date by now.

The one I had did video and still and used a removable memory stick that I could plug right into the tv without having to fuck with a bunch of wires and such.

From what I've seen, this is going to be similar to the route I will go.  Memory stick out of the camcorder, into the laptop, then figure out the program to use...I'm going to start with Windows Movie Maker to see where that takes me.  Then, edit, finalize, and burn.  Not sure about burning to a rewritable Blu-Ray, though (if they even exist).

Hell if you are already gonna have it in a digital format I would look around for ways to keep it there in lieu of burning it to anything.

You got a blue ray burner?

I read up on the HD cameras online a while back. just go online ans start searching for the best HD camcorders and software. In about 200 hours, you'll have a good idea.

Update.

There is no way (that I've found) to burn a Blu-Ray with HD recorded material.  The only way to watch HD home videos that are recorded in HD on an HD television is to use either a mini-HDMI cable or USB cable to hook up the HD camcorder directly to your HD television.  If you're going to burn it, you have to use a movie maker program (on my new laptop, it runs Windows Movie Maker, although I'm yet to try it out) to edit the videos once you connect your camcorder to your computer, then burn the edited videos to a standard definition rewritable DVD.  I will be going the burning route here in a little while, and will update on how the movie making process works.
