Title: Pre-Dick-Shuns Week A
Post by: Snaggletiger on August 31, 2021, 11:22:40 AM
Finally, the Predictions have come back to the X.  If ya’ smeeeeellllll what the Snags is cookin’, I’ma lay this knowledge down on your jabroni asses.

#19 Penn State @ #12 Wisconsin.  I know nothing about these two teams except that to me, Sandusky U is the LSU of the Big 10….overrated. Speaking of knowledge, or lack thereof, I couldn’t name one player on either team. The Badgers are higher rated and playing at home.  That’s how I’m picking this one.

Wisky:  30

PSU:  21

LSU at UCLA:  I spoke my piece on LSU in another thread.  Just not understanding all the love being thrown their way.  They travel to the Rose Bowl to face a UCLA squad that has sucked the last couple of years.  The were 3-4 last year and gave up 43+ in three of those games.  They do have a game under their belts after throttling Hawaii this past Saturday.  Plus, they have a very experienced QB in Dorian Thompson-Robinson, even if he’s been underwhelming at times.  I would say UCLA will have a home field advantage, but there were only about 8 people in the stands for the opener.  Still….and this is just wishful thinking…..

UCLA:  28

LSU:  24

Fuck Georgia at Clemson:  Not really “at Clemson”.  The game will be played in Charlotte, NC at, I believe, the Panthers stadium.  Every FUGA fan thinks the college football world will be on bended knee after this season, worshiping at the Bulldog water bowl.  They are talented, indeed, but I’ve read they are hurting at receiver and may be missing some key guys.  Clemson comes in with tons of talent as well, led by some big ass QB named BJ Ukalayleeboogeboo.  No really, that’s his name.  Trust me.  More wishful thinking.

Clemson:  27

FUGA:  25  (Yeah, I have no idea why I put 25)

Miami at Bama:  Yes, I’ll take Bama in this one, but I honestly hope it’s a horrendous night for the SEC’s top dogs.  As Lane Kiffin said, those boys out in Vegas don’t build all those billion dollar casinos by not knowing what they’re talking about.  But damn, the last spread I saw was 18.  For those of you versed in the ways of teh bets, isn’t that too much?  Anyway, I think D’Eriq King covers that just being under center.  Dat boy good.  Our local sports talk show announced Bama’s depth chart yesterday and I didn’t recognize three names on it.  But every year, we think the task of reloading is too much, and Lord Saybinz just keeps on putting high priced talent on the field and never misses a beat.  I see a close one, though.

Bama: 35

Miami:  30

Akron at The University of Auburn:  We are the Tigers.  They are the Zips.  Zips for chrisshakes.  Coach Brianz Harzinz debut causes universal War Eagle chub.

Aubren:  56

Akron:  10

On another note without predictions.  Somewhat ironically, Gus Malzahn’s debut with UCF will be against Boise State on Thursday night. I believe I know what I’m doing that night.  Also, we get some Monday night foosballs when Louisville and Ole Miss clash in the Chicken Filets Classic.

Thoughts?  Predictions?  Light-hearted casual conversation?  Espresso?

they didn't build all those building in Vegas being right all the time.....

They built them by being right more than wrong. They are wrong quite often. 18 is about right to me on Bama/Meeeyami. Miami, Texas, Georgia - the 3 musketeers of the "were back! OMMAGGERDD" club.

I will try to keep things organized. Brian will be happy when the NFL is here. Alan will surprise you at least once. Josh will relate everything to Bama or the Raiders. And Lindsey will look hot.

Chryst has something working with daddy Barry's old team.  Franklin seems to be fading.  I like your pick.

I think LSU is going to be laughably bad this year.  Chip Kelly is a shitty coach, but even he is better than the O.  I like your pick.

I think the Canes pull an upset here.  Fuck bama.

Yeah, this will be a "name your score" game...and I hope Harsin piles it on, Spurrier-style.  Give the fans what they want: offense.

I could live with it.  If I was a bettin' man, I'd definitely be jumping on that 18-19 point spread.  I can see Bama winning despite replacing so many.  They do it time after time there, Cyndi Lauper.  But there has to be some hiccups with all the newbies.

This also has the feel of a game that the kids would look past (given Tha U's mostly mediocre existence since '02) to their detriment.

Diaz, Lashlee and T-Rob can whup that azzzzzz!

Also, did not realize that Ed Reed and Mike Rumph are now on staff there.  Smart move.

UAB looked good from late 2nd quarter on.  Guess they will find out exactly what they have when they roll into Athens.

I thought so too.  QB was incredibly accurate, but that may have been because the pass catchers were going 7-11, open all night.

Finebaum had an LSU beat writer on yesterday.  When asked how he thought they'd do this year, he starts with, "They're as talented as anybody in the country...."  WTF???  No, they're not!  In 2019, they had a solid defense and a huge, experienced O-Line.  What was as talented as anyone in the country was Joe Fucking Burrow, Clyde Edwards Eclaire and that bunch of stud receivers. They have nothing like that on this squad and Ed Orgeron doesn't have Joe Fucking Brady designing plays in the passing game.

I think I'm gonna' head down to Baton Rude this October and represent while we beat that ass.

UCF
Dillon Gabriel is no Nick Marshall.
The first scripted drive looked great until the 100 yard pick six.

We will see if the same ole Gus shows up.
I saw a miracle. Short crossing route to the tight end for a 20 yard touchdown.
Defense looks like a no tackling AU defense. They did get better. Big Kat looked good against a weaker opponent and Domio made some plays.

I swear I thought I was watching AU from the past. More talent but coached horribly.
Gus got lucky again.

I am so glad he is gone.

36-31 with :15 left and he had to punt it. Again cannot close a game out on offense.

All of that ^^ how many times did auburn win where we felt we really lost? That was the ucf game. That rollercoaster ride. That ineptness 80% of the game. Bad opponent.  First game and they executed flawlessly.  Can’t ask for more.  Does it prove anything?  It does in the sense that teams have a totally different Auburn to prepare for.  Another cupcake to fine tune before heading up to Pedo Stadium.

As godfather said yesterday, with Gus the goober that game is probably like Mercer a few years ago - 20-10 heading into the 4th with starters still in. I like what I saw. And I mean more than the cheerleader pics I sent to several of you.

Yes, the opponent was astoundingly inept.  Yes, this is the sort of game wherein Auburn should empty the bench.  That said, there were still a lot of things to like about what we saw Saturday:

1) QB1 is named Nix and that battle with Finley couldn't have been remotely close.  Finley looks the part and throws a dart, but he's slow and inaccurate for now.  Bo looked confident, calm and completely in charge.  The only thing preventing a perfect day was Kobe Hudson (on a slight overthrow that he gave no effort to catch and another pass right in his hands.)  Still 20/22, 275, 3/0 is a pretty nice outing...in a half and three minutes.

2) Bo was assisted in his solid outing by an OL that allowed 2 TFLs, 1 QB hurry and 0 sacks.  A quality day by the beef up front.

3) The other factor in keeping Bo's jersey clean, and due in large part to item #2, was the RB play.  Tank and Worm are known entities (I submit that Shivers may be the hardest hitter on this team...no disrespect to Nos. 9 and 0), and it is bringing me some measure of relief to see Hunter & Jackson look capable with the rock.  As a group, they rushed for 10.5 ypc and 275 yards.

4) Not to be lost in the shuffle, the WR corps decided to show out a bit.  Bo spread the ball to 9 different receivers, including...and you might want to sit when you read this...FIVE PASSES TO A TIGHT END!  I mean, we might get a NOI because I'm not certain that's a legal strategy.

5) Turnovers can take the wind out of an otherwise beautiful sail, but not a single offensive player coughed up the ball yesterday.  Of concern, however, is that the defense failed to capitalize on 4 Akron fumbles and our vaunted secondary failed to produce a pick.

6) Defense...we knew they were talented, but they seem to have a different energy this year.  My armchair theory: they know that they no longer have to drag an under-performing offense across the finish line every week.  The D Line was active and deep.  This group has gone from a question mark to a strength in my book.  Snags tried to temper my enthusiasm by reminding me of the opponent, but the light seems to have suddenly come on for TD Moultry.  He was running sideline to sideline and if he loafed any, I certainly missed it.  Seemed like a far cry from the player we all knew and loathed.

7) Overall team look/energy: I gotta give 'em an A+.  Maybe it's the honeymoon phase with the new staff or just the joy of pounding a cupcake into submission, but the team looked like they were having fun and supporting each other.  Also, underrated is that fact that the team incurred 3 penalties for 25 yards...helluva a polished look for a season opener.

TD had 7 tackles, 3 TFL and one sack.  My beef with him has been he just plain looked slow.  Harvinz said after the game he’s “got that motor”, which to me, means he’s relentless.  I hope the light came on for the guy.

TD had 7 tackles, 3 TFL and one sack.  My beef with him has been he just plain looked slow.  Harvinz said after the game he’s “got that motor”, which to me, means he’s relentless.  I hope the light came on for the guy.
He didn't look slow Saturday.  Like a different guy altogether.

The Perception of #10 Bo Nix

In a day and age where loyalty and commitment to a college football program is at an all time low, you would think it would be refreshing to have a lifelong die hard at starting quarterback. Especially one following in his father’s footsteps. In today’s need for instant gratification, and an overflowing transfer portal, somebody that truly “rides for the brand” should be respected on a higher level, right?

One would think so, but it is not the case with Bo Nix for many Auburn fans. The perception of #10 amongst the Auburn fanbase is one of the more puzzling things I’ve experienced in my Auburn fandom.
Throw the numbers out the window. We’ll get into those later. A five-star QB recruit commits to Auburn and starts as a true freshman. Immediately, the perception was this had to be some sort of mistake. Joey Gatewood is literally Cam Newton. What is Gus thinking?
Sadly, it then shifts to, “well, Gus is on the hot seat and only starting Bo to save face with the powers that be.” Yeah, some people actually went there. The only thing Bo does is go 9-4 beating all SEC West opponents with the exception of national champion LSU, losing by a field goal because the stripes swallowed their whistles.
One bad decision in the Swamp in his first true road game cost Auburn the Florida game. One bad throw to Harold Joiner cost Auburn the Georgia game. But there was that classic win over Pac-12 champion #6 Oregon, and None were sweeter than sending Saban home after yet another loss to a 9-win Auburn team.

“Yeah, well the Auburn defense really won those games!” Oh, so like JT Daniels for Georgia, right?
Everybody was excited heading into year two. The only problem was that Covid-19 decided to be a thing. That obviously forced a 10-game, all-SEC schedule. Auburn replaces all but one offensive lineman from the 2019 unit. They lose the staples that had been the heart and soul of the team in Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson, amongst others on the defensive side of the ball.
Oh yeah, they also hired Chad Morris at offensive coordinator. So, Bo inherits an unprecedented pandemic, a brand-new patch-work offensive line, an inexperienced defense, and a new offensive coordinator. What could go wrong?
Let’s talk about scheme. Gus Malzahn’s offense has undoubtedly been magical at times. The formations, motions, zone reads, jet sweeps, and RPO’s were taken to an entirely new level like the college football world had never seen at the time. Sprinkle all that eye candy with some fast tempo and you had the Gus Malzahn magic that we all loved.
However, all that magic had one major flaw. It lacked any sort of established route tree. When plan A wasn’t working, Auburn never had much of a plan B when teams forced them into obvious passing situations. There were never any progression reads.
Jordan Rodgers had a worrisome, yet amazing breakdown of this on film. The scheme lacked multiple reads, checkdowns, and safety outlets. Seth Williams and Anthony Schwartz were both quoted during this NFL preseason as being behind on the basic knowledge of routes. Seth Williams was one of the more athletic wide receivers to ever walk through the tunnels of Jordan Hare Stadium. He was cut by the Denver Broncos reportedly on the basis that he understood the wide receiver position “at a high school level.”
I say all of that to get this: Bo had one primary read. If that read wasn’t there, he didn’t have progressions or check downs. He wasn’t put in situations to be successful. Combine that with not having any time to throw the football and you get what we saw last season.
Here we are in Bo’s third season. We are now in the Bryan Harsin era. Nix is on his third offensive coordinator in as many seasons. However, there are some major differences in this season compared to 2020.
We are back to our standard schedule. Fans are back in the stadium and there is a sense of normalcy. Auburn is returning all five starting offensive linemen from the previous season. The defense should be as good, if not better than it has been since 2017. And oh yeah, there’s that Tank Bigsby guy in the backfield.

After the throttling of Akron 60-10, the one thing I took away was how calm Bo looked in the pocket. Was he under pressure? No. Were most of his throws to wide open receivers? Yes. I did see one thing I haven’t seen, though. I saw Bo going through progressions.
First read, second read, and third read touchdown throws all happened. Yes, Akron was horrible, but the things you wanted to see were there. This is not a new Bo Nix. This is the same guy that’s always been there. He’s being coached up. He’s being put in situations where he has options and can have success.
He’s having fun. This is the year.

anyone blaming Bo for the last 2 years of dysfunction has not been watching very carefully. He was a 5 star for a reason. He has been successful at every level since he was 6 years old. We all know what the common denominator was through the years and it's gone. My hope was just that Bo wasn't too far damaged to repair for Bobo and Harsin like so many QBs of the past have been.

Allofdisratchere.
