Surprised the Aussie didn't win the punting job.

What a coincidence. My thoughts exactly!

Middle of our OL scares me. Not sure Kim and driscoll don’t get steamrolled by the better front 4s in the league. Washington’s DL is a rough way to get your cherry popped.

Hey just cause you said it first through private channels, doesn't mean I wasn't thinking it.  Besides I have said all along that OLine was my biggest area of concern.

Everything I've read on Driscoll has been over the top positive. Coaches and players have gone out of their way to sing his praises, talking about how physical and aggressive he is.  The things that makes me feel better about him are that he's got 20 starts under his belt, 5 of which were against SEC teams.  Plus, he's been going up against one of the top D-lines in the country every day at practice.  For me, I'm more concerned about Tega Winnebego.  I hope like hell he's progressed from last year, because he just wasn't very good.

One noticeable thing about the running back and 4 WR positions.  The back ups are a redshirt freshman and 4 true freshmen. I'd say that bodes pretty well for the future.

By James Crepea (https://connect.al.com/staff/JamesCrepea/posts.html)

Auburn has been settled on it starting offensive line for Saturday's season opener for over a week, but that doesn't mean there isn't any potential for moving parts or need for contingencies.

Kaleb Kim's status as the starting center is somewhat tenuous given how both coach Gus Malzahn and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey both spoke of the imminent return of Nick Brahms to compete for the job.

If No. 9 Auburn were to need to call upon a backup at center against No. 6 Washington on Saturday, Malzahn believes Brahms could be called upon despite his limited practices this month.

"I think that question will probably be answered better at the end of this week, but I'd like to say Nick can do it all right now," Malzahn said. "He's only practiced for about two weeks. Tucker Brown is also a guy who's had reps at center and I know we'd feel comfortable with him going in there. As far as Mike (Horton) playing center, I don't know if we're to that point. But Nick Brahms would be our best solution."

Keeping the other four starters, Prince Tega Wanogho Jr., Marquel Harrell, Horton and Jack Driscoll in their positions means the top backups at guard and tackle are what would dictate Auburn's other contingency plans along the line.

"We're always looking for three tackles, three guards and two centers," Malzahn said last week. "That's the comfort zone for me going into each season and think we're close to getting that figured out.

Given his experience, redshirt-junior Bailey Sharp is not only the backup left tackle but likely the top backup overall if either Wanogho or Driscoll were to get hurt.

The coaches have confidence in Austin Troxell though. He's the backup at right tackle and could get the nod over Sharp if Driscoll were to go down.

"Bailey Sharp and Trox, both those guys we feel confidence in that if one of those (starters) went down," Malzahn said.
Calvin Ashley is the backup at right guard but also the clear No. 3 guard overall. Since Horton played left guard last season, if Harrell were to go down he would likely slide over and Ashley would come in.

"We're bringing along Calvin and Calvin is immensely talented, and each day we find something for him to get better at," offensive line coach J.B. Grimes said earlier this month. "In my mind right now, Calvin Ashley, he is battling like crazy to be in that lineup, and each day we've got to take steps to get him where he needs to be."

Grimes knows much of Auburn's success will be dictated but how his group performs this season. He's also well aware that it likely won't be up to only the starting five to get the job done over the course of the season and is stressing to the backups that they need to be prepared should opportunities arise.

"I said this years ago back in 2013, but you don't just throw an offensive lineman into the grease and pull him out like you do a piece of fried catfish," Grimes said. "You got to put him in the oven and you've got to bake him for a while and then you pull him out."
This really doesn't make me feel any better about Kim.

Why do I feel like it's 1998 again?
Some scientists would say it's just your consciousness hanging its head out of a port hole from the windmills of your mind or something very similar...but actually it's cyclical.

Gus typically shortchanges a position group. This practice of under- recruiting various groups used to be strictly aimed at the defensive side until linebackers were seen running away from ball carriers.
Then we got Kevin Steele and all of that changed.

Fastforward-varoooooom!
Ok this is the third team J.B.Grimes has been with since he left us over two seasons ago to coach with his son for one season.
During that time Gus saw fit to employ three transfers, two that actually started and played very well.

Remember now it's a given that this certain position group likes to find "5" to "gel" into a bonafied SEC-ready unit.

Also means underclassmen get fewer reps.

This group is shakey. Has been for many months.

We have reason to feel very positive about this season just have some doubts about this group is all.
One positive sign I will be looking for (aside from Stidham remaining upright) is our fullback blowing through ahead of the ball carrier. This is generally a pretty good indicator that we are carrying out assignments up front.
