BREAKING: Butch Thompson to be Auburn's baseball coach

Matthew Stevens, Montgomery Advertiser 11:10 a.m. CDT October 22, 2015

AUBURN – Butch Thompson has agreed in principle to become the next head baseball coach at Auburn University.

Multiple sources close to the situation confirmed to the Montgomery Advertiser Thursday morning that the Mississippi State pitching coach and Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs came to a verbal agreement late Wednesday evening. Thompson has notified Mississippi State officials of his intention to take the head coaching position and is currently on his way to the Auburn campus to sign the contract.

Thompson, 44, will be taking over the program from Sunny Golloway after he was dismissed with cause on Sept. 27.Thompson is more than familiar with Auburn after being the Tigers pitching coach for three seasons (2006-08) under head coach Tom Slater and has spent the last 14 seasons as an assistant in the Southeastern Conference. Each of Auburn’s three recruiting classes with Thompson on staff were ranked among the top 20 in the nation, including a No. 5 national ranking in 2007.

Thompson is noted as one of the best pitching coaches and recruiters currently in college baseball, especially the southeastern part of the country. During his seven-season tenure at MSU under head coach John Cohen, Thompson has involved in the development of 23 undrafted players out of high school into Major League Baseball draft picks. He was named the 2014 National Assistant Coach of the Year by both Baseball America and the American Baseball Coaches Association.

“Butch Thompson is not only one of the most elite coaches in the country – he is one of the best human beings I have ever known,” Cohen said after Thompson was given the honor. “His never-ending dedication to his craft, his loyalty to our program and his devotion to this university is why he is so deserving of this distinguished award.”

Thompson has recruited and developed 22 Division I All-America selections and 29 all-conference honors and his best recent recruit is arguably Oakland A’s starting pitcher Kendall Graveman, who last year became the ninth player Thompson tutored to pitch in Major League Baseball. Graveman, who had 21 starts this season before being put on the 60-day disabled list, verbally committed to Auburn, despite growing up a diehard fan of the University of Alabama, because of his loyalty to Thompson and followed him to Mississippi State when Cohen hired Thompson in 2009.

In a post-game media conference following MSU’s fall season, Cohen addressed the news that Thompson was a top candidate for the vacant head coaching position at Auburn.

“Nobody deserves to have that type of opportunity more than a Butch Thompson," Cohen said to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger Wednesday. "We’re cheering for him. We don’t want to lose him. I’ve told many people at Auburn, you’d be crazy not to hire this guy. But I’m going to be the happiest guy in the world if you don’t."

The Montgomery Advertiser confirmed last week Auburn did bring Thompson on campus on Oct. 12 to interview for its open head baseball coach position. Former Clemson head coach Jack Leggett also interviewed with Auburn officials that week as well. Auburn has conducted interviews earlier this week and local reports have suggested those candidates are Florida State assistant coach Mike Martin Jr. and Virginia pitching coach Karl Kuhn.

Sources close to the situation confirmed to the Montgomery Advertiser Thompson spoke to Jacobs, the Auburn baseball search committee and various head coaches including football coach Gus Malzahn, men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl and Auburn softball coach Clint Myers.

Sources have also told The Montgomery Advertiser that Thompson would consider reaching out to former Auburn All-America selection, 7-year MLB veteran and current SEC Network baseball analyst Gabe Grossto join his staff as a full-time hitting coach.

Jacobs announced in a university release on Sept. 27 Golloway was being fired as Auburn’s head baseball coach with cause but did not reveal the nature of the violations in the statement. Jacobs told reporters on Oct. 1 that he wanted to get the program through fall drills, which are going on this week, before commenting on the head baseball coach search.

Jacobs announced that assistant coach Greg Norton, who played in Major League Baseball from 1996-2009, will be responsible for Auburn’s baseball operations until a new coach is hired.

In a phone interview with the Montgomery Advertiser, Golloway said he didn’t understand why he was dismissed from his position after two seasons with the Tigers program. Multiple sources have also confirmed to the Montgomery Advertiser that Auburn placed associate head coach/pitching coach Tom Holliday on paid administrative leave at the same time they dismissed Golloway.

In a media statement, Golloway’s attorney called the decision by Auburn “outrageous” and threatened possible litigation if a settlement on severance compensation couldn’t soon be reached between the two parties.

'TRADITION, PASSION' LEADS BUTCH THOMPSON TO AUBURN
Oct. 22, 2015

Butch Thompson, left, and Jay Jacobs hold the jersey that tells of the hiring of Auburn's new baseball coach

By Charles Goldberg

AUBURN, Ala. — Evan Crawford listened to Butch Thompson on Thursday, and, like back in the day when he was a hot pitching high school prospect, he was ready to commit to Auburn like he did in 2006.

"He had me again. I was ready to re-sign. It was great," Crawford said.

Auburn introduced Thompson as its baseball coach Thursday, bringing in former Tigers' pitching coach who brings a reputation of integrity and recruiting prowess after spending 15 years in the Southeastern Conference.

Thompson, who was Auburn's pitching coach from 2006-08, is coming from Mississippi State, where he spent the last seven seasons.

"I think it means good things in the future for Auburn baseball and the people around the area. It's always good to have a genuine good person leading a portion of the athletic department," said Crawford, who pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012.

Director of Athletics Jay Jacobs formally introduced Thompson at a press conference attended by athletic staff and former and current players.

"It was amazing to me the number of former players, not only just at Auburn, but at other institutions, that called me about Butch," Jacobs said. "Not only about his character and integrity, but how great of a teacher he was, and he was the kind of guy we'd want our son to play for.

"We actually got calls and emails from players on major league baseball teams of players that Butch had coached."

They endorsed Thompson, who will sign a five-year contract that will pay him $350,000 annually.

Jacobs said Thompson could take Auburn "back to its greatness." Thompson replaces Sunny Golloway, who was dismissed in September.

Jacobs said he asked: "Who is the best person for those guys over there in that clubhouse right now? Then you begin to think about what qualifications do you need to have to be a successful baseball coach at Auburn."

He said "character and integrity" led him to Thompson.

"I'm honored, humbled and blessed to stand here today as head baseball coach at Auburn University," Thompson said. "Auburn has meant so much to me and my family over the years.

"I wanted this job because of Auburn's tradition, history and passion. Auburn has one of the finest fan bases in the country. I feel all the ingredients are here."

Thompson met with the team Thursday afternoon, soon after he arrived on campus.

"That was important, that was our first calling. I basically told them, 'It's OK. It's going to be OK,'" Thompson said.

"My plan is to love them up, coach them up and develop them so they give every ounce of their ability to Auburn University."

Thompson missed fall practice, and has only a few weeks before the Nov. 11 signing period begins. Still, he said, "we will not give the season away, next week away, tomorrow away, today away, a pitch away."

He said he'll hit the recruiting trail "immediately, maybe as soon as tomorrow."

"I'm excited about what the future holds. That future starts today.

"I know what an SEC player looks like. I have an opportunity to coach first-rounders, as opposed to coming and trying to figure it out."

Mississippi State coach John Cohen wished his former assistant well.

"We are proud and happy for Butch Thompson, and there is no one more deserving of this opportunity," Cohen said.

Scott Sullivan, who coached with Thompson at Auburn, watched the press conference.

"It's a great day for Auburn baseball. Coach Thompson is a tremendous man of integrity and character, and to have a man like him leading men, who happen to be baseball players, is reassuring."

Sullivan said having a former Auburn coach return is a plus.

"Once you get a part of Auburn, it stay with you for a long time. There's a hunger and desire. It's like when you leave home, there's no place like home, and there's no place like Auburn."

Former Auburn and big leaguer Gabe Gross said "that's a man I can get behind."

"Auburn baseball means a lot to a lot of people. I don't think you can overestimate the pride I took in playing for Hal Baird and playing here for Auburn baseball. There's no reason whatsoever not to get back there again," Gross said.

"I feel very strongly his leadership and knowledge of the game of baseball is the right place at the right time."

Jonathan Schuerholz brought baseball credentials to the search committee. The former Auburn player who is the assistant director player development in the Atlanta Braves organization said the hiring "means we have a man at the helm that exemplifies what it means to be an Auburn man. He's a man of very high moral fiber, very high moral character, yet at the same time has a tremendous amount of baseball acumen.

"It's very important of where the history of this program was at one point and where it's going to go. What we have done in the past, what Coach (Hal) Baird did in the past, and Coach (Paul) Nix before him, they were able to put together winning ball clubs that represented the university on the field and off the field, and that's something I know Butch takes to heart. He's seen it. He's been a part of it. There's no doubt he's the guy who will do this again for us."

Auburn, Ala.--New Auburn Tigers head baseball coach Butch Thompson wasted little time making a splash hire for his staff as longtime Kentucky assistant and current Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year Brad Bohannon was named to the staff on Tuesday.
“As I started the process of putting the staff together, I knew I wanted to begin to construct the identity of what our program will look like,” Thompson said. “I am looking for men who are above reproach and who are going to be builders of men. On top of that, my goal with Brad’s hire was to bring in an experienced SEC field coach and also the best recruiter in America and I think we accomplished both.
“It is my hope that everyone at Auburn University will join me in recognizing that we hired one of the best assistants in the country. This hire speaks volumes about Auburn’s commitment to baseball. There isn’t a program in the country that wouldn’t be excited to hire Brad Bohannon.”

A 12-year assistant at Kentucky and one of the main guys responsible for the best run in school history for the program, Bohannon is known as one of college baseball’s top recruiters and it has shown with the production in the Kentucky program since his time there.
“I’m really excited to be at Auburn,” Bohannon said. “This is a special place and a special opportunity. Having been in the league for 12 years, I have a really good idea of who Butch Thompson is as a person and as a coach. When it all comes down to it, it’s all about the people you work with and I’m working with a good one and I’m excited to be at Auburn.”
In his 12 seasons the Wildcats had 68 players drafted, including five off last year’s team. A year earlier A.J. Reed was named the national player of the year by every major publication and was drafted 42nd overall by the Houston Astros.
Bohannon's 2013 crop of talent had a total of 15 players that had been drafted in their careers, the second-most in the SEC (Vanderbilt - 18), and ahead of Florida and South Carolina (12). In addition, Bohannon sent nine of his 2013 players to either the Cape Cod League or the USA National Team, tied for the NCAA lead.
Bohannon had a big hand in turning around a Kentucky program that was the first SEC team ever to go from `worst-to-first' in one year, claiming the school's first SEC Title in 2006. The 2006 campaign saw the Wildcats win a school-record 44 games and host the school's first NCAA Regional Tournament. The 2007 club finished with 34 wins and the 2008 club totaled 44-wins and an appearance in the Ann Arbor NCAA Regional Championship game.
Most recently the Wildcats set a school record with 45 wins in 2012 and the first SEC Championship in school history.
During his time at Kentucky the Wildcats have had the No. 4 recruiting class in the country in 2008 and the No. 6 six class in 2009. In 2006 class was No. 21, the 2007 class was No. 31 and the 2010 group was rated 16th. His 2012 newcomer group was ranked No. 25 and included the first consensus freshman All-America selections in program history, Austin Cousino and Reed.
The 2013 crop of newcomers on the UK roster was ranked No. 11 by Collegiate Baseball. Bohannon's 2014 class earned a No. 25 national ranking by Baseball America and his 2015 group was tabbed as the 14th-best in the nation by Collegiate Baseball.
In addition to his recruiting prowess Bohannon works with the hitters and outfielders, a role he’s expected to continue at Auburn.
A native of Rome, Ga., Bohannon worked at Wake Forest for two seasons before his time at Kentucky. He worked with John Cohen at Kentucky from 2004-08 before being retained by Gary Henderson.
