Was listening to our local sports talk show driving back from lunch. The host was giving practice notes from yesterday and at the end of the list he says, "And Jake Holland was granted 4 more years of eligibility."

I called the show and told them I didn't have much time because I was waiting on the tow truck to come get my car out of the ditch.  And that I expected them to pay the tow bill.

I'm firing off a nasty email to management about the offensive humor and I expect the host to be suspended indefinitely.

AUBURN, Ala. - Wide receiver D’haquille Williams’ reputation preceded him to Auburn. He was the nation’s No. 1 junior college prospect, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound wide receiver with the kind speed, hands and athleticism that make get the attention of NFL scouts.

Williams, who signed with Auburn last December, practiced for the first time with his new teammates when the Tigers began spring practice on Tuesday. And it didn’t take him long to get the attention of the veterans in the secondary.

“He’s a competitor,” senior cornerback Jonathon Mincy said. “He’s going to talk. He’s going to get in your face. That’s something you want from your wide receivers. We are going to go out there and compete with him.”

Asked if he returned the talk in kind, Mincy grinned. “Definitely,” he said. “We’re not going to talk about it.”

Senior safety Jermaine Whitehead said it is clear that Williams and freshman receiver Stanton Truitt have game-changing ability.

“He reminds me a lot of Sammie (Coates),” Whitehead said. “He can get vertical fast, but also can put his foot in the ground and make plays across the field. Truitt is going to be a good guy, quick with his feet and great hands. There is a lot of confidence out of both of those guys. They are going to be able to help us real fast.”

Senior Trovon Reed practiced at cornerback for the first time Tuesday after spending his first three Auburn seasons at wide receiver. One of the more popular and well-respected players on Auburn’s team, he earned more respect from his teammates.

“He looked good,” Mincy said. “He looked like he’s been playing corner for a long time.”

Whitehead welcomed the move.

“I always liked Trovon’s energy,” Whitehead said. “When he played offense, he was the guy I went at to get pumped and have a good day. Now he’s on my side of the ball. It’s going to be a long year for the offense.”

Here are the numbers for Auburn’s five newcomers: 1 Williams, 10 Truitt, 52 C Xavier Dampeer, 24 S Derrick Moncrief, 47 TE Chris Laye.

Reed has switched from No. 1 to No. 25.

Auburn will return to the practice field Thursday for the second day of spring practice. Saturday, the Tigers will practice in full pads at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

SPRING NOTEBOOK, DAY 4: MARSHALL PASSES ON TARGET
March 25, 2014

AUBURN, Ala. – Senior Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall vowed to take his passing game to a higher level, and his teammates say he’s done that in a big way through four days of spring practice.

"I’m seeing an NFL caliber quarterback already," senior wide receiver Quan Bray said. "He’s making throws he wasn’t making in the spring last year. He’s leading us and being that guy we can lean on, and he can lean on us."

Bray says Marshall, who arrived from Garden City (Kan.) Community College last summer, led the Tigers to a 12-2 record and the Southeastern Conference championship. But Bray says he’s even a more consistent and confident player now

"He knows everybody and we know him," Bray said. "He’s to the point where everything is clicking. He knows the offense. He’s throwing the ball where he’s supposed to and making the right reads."

Junior wide receiver Sammie Coates says Marshall will do big things on the field.

"Nick is throwing the ball real well this spring," Coates said. "He’s making great reads. He’s going to shock the world with what he does."

As Auburn won nine consecutive games en route to the BCS Championship Game last season, Marshall and departed tailback Tre Mason dazzled defenses with the zone read. Tailback Cameron Artis-Payne says Marshall will do that and more in 2014.

"It’s just him being comfortable and knowing his reads right away, going through the progressions quicker," Artis-Payne said. "He’s hitting on more deep balls than he used to. I think he’s going to have a really big year."
--Phillip Marshall

Corey Grant: Full speed ahead

Running back Corey Grant isn't the biggest guy around, but that won't stop him from showing he's not afraid to mix it up.

"That’s one thing I do want to do, establish myself, because you know it’s a question if I can run between the tackles, I want to get that established throughout spring and going into the fall, letting everybody know I can do that."

That said, Grant said he doesn't mind being called the "speed guy."

"I like that. It’s kind of to my advantage, my speed is a little bit more of me than power, but I accept that role and like that role," Grant said.
-- Charles Goldberg

Cameron Artis-Payne says he can do it

Tre Mason rushed for 1,800 yards last season. Cameron Artis-Payne said he could have a big year, too.

"I definitely feel like with those carries that I could do something similar. I could put up those types of numbers," Artis-Payne said.
-- Charles Goldberg

An interesting ride for Quan Bray

Wide receiver Quan Bray has arrived at his final Auburn season, and he marveled Tuesday at what he has seen and experienced.

"It’s a blessing to make it this far," Bray said. "A lot of people don’t get this chance. I’ve seen a lot, been through a lot – a coaching change, a 3-9 season, the next season going to the national championship. It’s a blessing to see a lot of different things in life."
--Phillip Marshall

Therezie: Going fast good for the defense, too

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn has vowed to add more tempo to his hurryup, no-huddle offense, and senior Star Robenson Therezie says that’s good for the defense, too.

"It’s very important," Therezie said. "We run against our own offense ,and it gets us in shape and helps us recognize what the next play is going to be. The pace doesn’t affect us now. I can remember when Coach Malzahn first got here and the pace was difficult. Now we’ve caught on to it and it’s good for us."
--Phillip Marshall

Moncrief makes and early impact at safety

Junior college transfer Derrick Moncrief was getting snaps with the first team at boundary safety from the first day of spring practice, and he has captured the attention of his teammates.

"He’s done a good job," senior Star Robenson Therezie said. "He’s learning faster than any other player that has played that position. I feel like that position fits him. He can learn both free and boundary. He can be a guy we can count on to replace some of the veterans we lost last season.
--Phillip Marshall

Coates says drops are no longer an issue

Junior wide receiver Sammie Coates was plagued by drop passes through his redshirt freshman season and early last season before going the final seven games without one.

He said Tuesday those problems are in the past.

"It’s behind me," Coates said. "I know if I do drop one at practice, it happens. I can’t let it bother me like I used to do. I know I have to move on and just keep making plays."

AUBURN'S ELLIS JOHNSON SAYS DEFENSE ON MOVE THIS SPRING
March 27, 2014

Charles Goldberg
AuburnTigers.com

AUBURN, Ala. -- Ellis Johnson says he's ahead of the game this spring in his second year as Auburn's defensive coordinator.

There's no need to spend time installing a new system this time around. He did that last year.

This spring, he says, has been devoted to putting the right players in the right positions, like flipping linebackers Kris Frost and Cassanova McKinzy… and he says he's not going to let a rash of injuries sidetrack him from his appointed rounds.

"We've still got a long way to go, both from the standpoint of our improvement and from the standpoint of number of practices," Johnson said. "We do have a few guys making some positive steps, but, right now, we still have long way to and a lot of time for guys to make those moves."

There are plenty of wildcards because of injuries. Johnson said defensive end LaDarius Owens and linebacker JaViere Mitchell aren't practicing because each have a broken foot. Cassanova McKinzy is slowed by his bruise. Star Robenson Therezie is practicing despite a broken hand. Defensive back Josh Holsey limited as he recovers from ACL surgery. Defensive lineman Elijah Daniel is limited because of a groin injury.

The injuries have opened the door for others and experiments. Defensive tackles Gabe Wright and Montravius Adams are getting a look at defensive end.

"It really hasn’t been much of a luxury as it’s been a necessity," Johnson said. 'In addition to being very thin at defensive end in spring practice, we also got Elijah got a groin the very first drill of the very first practice. So we’ve actually got Montravius and Gabe working out at defensive end more as a necessity than as an evaluation. Both of them do some pretty impressive things out there, but we need their depth and rotation in the interior line. So I don’t foresee that being permanent, but it would be good that if we did have some unusual rash of injuries next year or something occur, those guys have got the ability to maybe go out there and help us."

The injury to Therezie at the Star position has allowed last year's spring standout, Justin Garrett, to spend time there as well as inside linebacker. He had won the starting job at Star last season before a foot injury, and then another foot injury, cost him much of the fall.

"Justin has been very unselfish in moving in, moving out, moving in, moving out," Johnson said. "It’s been probably hard on him to learn both, but he’s had a good spring so far and right now we can’t afford to move him."

Johnson said defensive back Mackenro Alexander has "made a lot of improvement. He came in without the advantage of spring ball last year and he really never got caught up as a true freshman, but spring ball is really helping him."

Junior college transfer Derrick Moncrief has also done well.

"Moncrief has been an extremely pleasant surprise," Johnson said. "When you get a junior college player who’s not played in your system you always wonder how long is it going to take him to make the transition.

"I think at this point he is way beyond all of the new safeties. I say the word 'new', meaning those that we don’t already know about."

His experiment of flipping Kris Frost to Will linebacker, and Cassanova McKinzy to the Mike linebacker, has gone well.

"Some of it, physically, has been very good. Kris has made a real quick transition and has looked really good," Johnson said. 'Cassanova has been bothered by a bruised bone in his hip and he has not been practicing very much. The three days he was healthy and full-speed out there he had some really good practices.

"If I had to throw a guess out there right now, if both of them were back to full-speed I would probably leave McKinzy at the Mike and keep Frost at the Will. Today’s practice Kris played both and as the practice went on he rotated at both spots. I would like for them to continue to do that. "

Only said that they were off the field, so he wasn't actually on the field (football, hay or intramural) when said issue occurred. Spring football, not AU related.  Listening to the Troy beat writer this morning on the radio recapping Troy's spring and he was asked about Erique Florence.  His response was, "I don't know what happened but let's just say Erique didn't last very long at Troy."

AUBURN'S J.B. GRIMES: 'GREAT BATTLE' AT LEFT TACKLE
April 1, 2014

By Phillip Marshall
AuburnTigers.com

AUBURN, Ala. - All-America left tackle Greg Robinson is gone, working toward the riches that will come when he is a high NFL draft pick in May. Back on the Auburn practice field, junior Pat Miller and sophomore Shon Coleman are competing to take his place.

After the seventh practice of the spring Tuesday, offensive line coach J.B. Grimes said the race is too close to call.

"Great battle," Grimes said. "Both of them are hooked up. Both of them are rooting for each other. I love the way they interact with each other. I think it's a great battle, and both of them are really good football players."

Miller started the first three games of last season at right tackle before sitting out a suspension for an issue that had been resolved in the summer. Avery Young claimed the starting job and still has it.

Four starters - sophomore guard Alex Kozan, senior center Reese Dismukes, senior guard Chad Slade and Young - return from last season's Southeastern Conference champions. Thirteen offensive linemen are on scholarship. It's a refreshing change for Grimes, who joined Gus Malzahn's staff just more than a year ago.

"I think it's going well," Grimes said. "The great thing you have when you have a lot of the same players and the same coaches is that you are talking in the same language. At this time last year, I was talking in a different language and they were hearing in a different language. It was utter chaos about half the time."

Last spring, Grimes spent most of this time trying to teach players to understand where to go, who to block and the technique they should use to do it. It's different now.

"A year ago, I was coaching how to get in a stance and how to take a first step," Grimes said. "What I'm coaching primarily now is the second step and a third step. We've made a lot of progress, because we've graduated to further down the field."

Redshirt freshman Deon Mix has been often praised as spring practice nears the halfway point. Grimes said junior college transfer center Xavier Dampeer, sophomore guard Will Allen and sophomore tackle Robert Leff have also taken major steps forward.

"I'm really pleased with the way Will Adams is coming on," Grimes said. "He's getting more reps. I'm pleased with Robert Leff. We really like Xavier Dampeer. We think he can be a very, very quality backup to Reese Dismukes and be ready to step in."

SPRING NOTEBOOK, DAY 7: VALUABLE LESSONS FOR DANIEL
April 1, 2014

AUBURN, Ala. – Sophomore defensive end Elijah Daniel finally wore pads again in Tuesday’s practice, the seventh of the spring for Auburn.

Daniel, a 5-star signee from Avon, Ind., was injured on the first drill of the first spring practice of his life. His high school did not have spring practice.

As a true freshman, Daniel played defensive end and moved inside in passing situations. He said he learned he needed to change his body to reach his potential. He worked overtime with strength and conditioning coach Ryan Russell.

“I’m going to be a lot better,” Daniel said. “I know I’m going to be a lot better. I’ve adjusted to how everything works. My conditioning is way better. That’s the biggest thing.”

Daniel said he learned valuable lessons last season from senior defensive end Dee Ford, who is projected to be a first-round draft pick.

“That’s the one thing I really look back on the season and recall,” Daniel said. “He was my roommate for trips. I learned a lot about how he got where he was. I’m going to try to utilize the same things he did to make myself a better player. He always said it starts with Coach Russell.”

Frost likes Harding’s move to linebacker

Junior linebacker Kris Frost said Tuesday the move of Khari Harding from safety to linebacker looks to be a good one.

“He has good body size to play linebacker,” Frost said. “He’s fast and he moves well. His drops are really good. It’s good seeing him there. We get to learn from him at the same time he is learning from us. We are just glad to have him in our group.”
--Phillip Marshall

High school coaching clinic starts Thursday

Auburn’s annual high school coaching clinic is scheduled to begin Thursday and go through Saturday morning’s scrimmage. Some 900 high school coaches are expected to be on hand to hear from Auburn’s coaches and from some of their own.

Familiarity pays off for Auburn’s defensive players

For the first time in his Auburn career, linebacker Kris Frost has the same defensive coordinator for the second consecutive season.

During Frost’s redshirt season in 2011, Ted Roof was the defensive coordinator. Brian VanGorder took over in 2012, but was not retained when Gus Malzahn was named head coach. Ellis Johnson took over and is back for his second season.

“It’s hard,” Frost said. “When you first come in, you have an outlook on how it’s going to be, and it changes. When you are a freshman, you finally get the feeling you are adjusting to that coach. Then it changes, and it’s like you are starting all over again.

“The adjustment to these guys for all of us was good. We had a bunch of players that just wanted to get the job done and were hungry to make plays. It’s all about how much work you are willing to put in and how well you understand the game.”
--Phillip Marshall

Veterans lead the way for the offensive line

Auburn offensive line coach J.B. Grimes sees familiar faces all around. He sees players who played for a national championship.

“You know what they can do already,” Grimes said. “You know what they are capable of doing. I think that’s the biggest thing. You just went through 14 football games. If they’re not quite doing as well as they can do, you can call them out on it. If they’re doing about as well as they can do, you understand.”

AUBURN, Alabama -- When Jerraud Powers arrived in Auburn to play in the Jason Dufner Charitable Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic this week, he made plans to stop by Auburn's spring practices on Tuesday, taking a look at the program for the first time in a long time.

For the first time since he was drafted in 2009, Powers felt welcome in the Auburn football offices again.

In the time since he was first hired more than a year ago, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn has opened the doors back up to former Tigers, particularly those in the NFL.

"Not to throw any shade out there to the past staff, but with Gus leading us, it seems more open to the former players, the alumni, guys in the league," Powers, a starting cornerback for the Arizona Cardinals heading into his sixth year in the NFL, said. "He wants those guys to come back, train, talk to the players, come back, help with everything. It's just going to help the program."

Powers headed up to the Tigers' facilities on Tuesday, taking advantage of Malzahn's open-door policy to meet the current staff, talk a little football and get a first-hand look at what the program looks like now.

But it's more than Powers. In Auburn's run to the national championship last season, several Auburn alumni with NFL resumes showed up to watch from the sidelines, and in the case of Bo Jackson, build a relationship with players like Tre Mason.

"We would welcome all of them," Malzahn said. "We're a true family, and we want to make sure that we have great relationships with our former players and our current NFL players, too."

In some cases, Malzahn has invited former Tigers to motivate his team.

Freshly retired after 15 seasons as a standout middle linebacker in the NFL, Auburn legend Takeo Spikes returned to deliver a pregame motivational speech to the Tigers before their win over Ole Miss last season, bringing a sense of Auburn's tradition to the current roster.

Auburn Spring Football: April 1, 2014
Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn watches work outs Tuesday, April 1, 2014, during spring practice at the Auburn Athletic Complex in Auburn, Ala. (Julie Bennett/jbennett@al.com)
"I thought it was a marvelous idea," Spikes said. "Not just me, but bringing in former players so guys can relate. I'm a firm believer, as a player, whenever you're living in the moment at that time, you have to pay homage to the guys that came before you."

Spikes kept going to Auburn games when he could, traveling to watch a season that turned into the biggest turnaround in the history of college sports.

"He keeps in touch with all the guys," Spikes said. "And he's always said he's got an open-door policy, at least to me, anyway. It's good to be able to have that relationship with him."

Now, during the offseason, Auburn's current NFL players have their own chance to return to campus. In addition to Powers, Sen'Derrick Marks, the former Tigers defensive tackle about to play his sixth season in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars, made his own trip to the team's facility this weekend, part of his own trip to play in Dufner's classic.

A lot like Powers, Marks appreciated the chance to meet the staff and talk football with the group leading his former school now.

"It's good, talking to the staff, seeing what they're doing, just to get insight on Auburn, feel again a part of it," Marks said. "I felt like, since I've left, nobody reached out to ask me to be a part of what was going on. He wants us to be involved."

Nearly all of Auburn's alums watched last season from afar, in some cases, like Powers, trading barbs with teammates who came from other SEC schools, like Cardinals' cornerbacks Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu, both from LSU, and safety Rashad Johnson and cornerback Javier Arenas from Alabama.

For years, Powers had seen the way other schools welcomed NFL alums back to campus in the offseason and wondered why Auburn didn't do the same.

All of that has changed under Malzahn.

"With the old staff, it just seemed closed," Powers said. "Gus is completely different. I love the direction this program is headed."

From what I've read, I like the move of Khari Harding to LB.  Listed at 6' 224, he's got more than enough size to play the position and Malzahn has said since he signed him that he's one of the hardest hitters he's ever seen.  Definitely need to establish some solid depth there, especially with Come on, Swain's status in limbo.

Should be a 30 yard penalty for laying out our receivers, since they never catch the ball anyway

It's a new day my friend. All b.s. aside, I'm expecting more consistent catching of the ball this season. We had some big catches last year but def missed some key easy catches. Those will happen but we had too many.

I think DQ is a game changer and a guy like this will open things up for Sammy and others.

IT'S PRACTICE AND BEYOND FOR AUBURN'S PASSING GAME
April 5, 2014

By Charles Goldberg
AuburnTigers.com

AUBURN, Ala. -- Nick Marshall couldn't wait for spring practice to begin working on his passing game, so he called his receivers together and off they went to get better.

The Auburn quarterback had been playing pass-and-catch before spring practice 2014 ever began.

"He's really starting to be a leader now, so he got the receivers together, he'd tell us the time and date," said receiver Tony Stevens.

It shows, said fellow receiver Ricardo Louis, that Marshall "cares and wants to get better."

The spring reports heading into a Saturday scrimmage on Marshall have been glowing.

"His leadership is very strong," Stevens said. "Last year, he wouldn't do the things that he does now, like go up to the line and tell them, 'hurry up, hurry up.' Now, I can see that he is very settled in the offense, he can just tell everybody what to do now, like how flat he wants us to go on routes, or how deep we should go. He's really very comfortable."

That's Nick Marshall. The receivers? They're getting better, too, with the addition of junior college transfer D'haquille Williams and newcomer Stanton Truitt and the natural growth by Stevens, Louis, Sammie Coates and the other veterans in Gus Malzahn's offense.

Stevens called Williams and Truitt "outstanding."

"Truitt, he's very fast. He's got speed like Sammie and Ricardo Louis, and he's just out there, getting it in every day mentally and sometimes in there physically. Duke, he's a big body. You just give it to him, and he's going to go up there and get it. That's what we need in this offense. Playmakers."

"There's a lot more competition," Louis said. "We have a lot more developed, experienced receivers out there. That just helps the whole receiving corps coming together."

Auburn led the nation in rushing when it ran for 4,596 yards and averaged 328.3 yards per game last season. The Tigers passed for 2,422. Could there be more balance in Auburn's future? How much tinkering do you after blasting through with a school-record 7,000 total yards?

"This year, I think it'll be more like everybody eats," Stevens said. "Right now, we've got so many weapons on offense from the running back position to the O-line to the skills. You can't just stop one of us, then you've got plenty more receivers in the slot, or at running back."

Stevens figures he's ahead of his game after begin slowed last spring with a hamstring injury. Now, he says, "I'm trying to come in and compete with Sammie and Duke and try to get better every day."

Stevens is going against a one-time fellow receiver these days. Trovon Reed has made the move to defensive back.

"He's got a veteran's mindset. He likes to talk, and I really think that's what we need, somebody that can get in our head so we can stay in the game mentally," Stevens said.

More scouting reports? How about quarterback Jeremy Johnson?

"He's very good," Stevens said. "A hundred-miles-per-hour fastball, that's all he knows. He's been good, though. I can see he's transformed from last year. He knows how to read the coverage now, and knows where to throw it at, so he's gotten very good."

On receiver Dominic Walker...

"He's learning the playbook day by day. I think he really pays more attention now than last year, because I think he probably knew he wasn't going to play," Stevens said.

What about Stevens?

"He has a lot of big-play ability," Louis said. "He shows a lot of flashes of making big plays in practice. The more hard work he puts in, he'll be a great receiver."

What's getting me all giddy is that we seem to have home run threats everywhere. Not just "the guy", like Tre was last year, but THE GUYS.  Receiver, line, backs - it's a target rich environment. Stop our run? There's Duke. Focus on the pass? Our QB will run for 20 yards. And on and on, combination after combination. With so many moving parts that are all equally talented, plus Gus's mad genius ability to scheme, we could frustrate the hell out of some people next year.

Yeah, sunshine pumping. But I'm getting a great tan anyway.

For real. This upcoming season could be the best QB & WR combination offense that AU has ever seen. Everybody would assume that the opposition defenses will be focused on Auburns running attack.

The woopiggies will not be happy come August 30th.
