Title: Little Something for my Friend Snaggletiger...
Post by: Tarheel on March 06, 2014, 11:22:04 AM
Especially after watching that Wake Forest/ Duke game last night:

Of course I may regret sharing this as my Tarheels have to travel to that quaint little gym in D'urm this weekend.

It's been so nice around here lately.  Can't you go back to doing whatever it is you've been doing?

Haters gonna' hate.

It is an obsessive, visceral, unhinged, and passionate hatred that cannot be completely expressed in language; I think I'd root for the Witch King of Angmar and all the orcs in Mordor before I'd support Duke.  I think the only time I'd actually cheer for Duke is if they were playing against al Qaeda.

But, having written that, former Duke player (and current Atlanta Hawks player), Elton Brand, upon leaving Duke early in his college career, has been quoted as saying:
"Thank you very much, for reminding me of the reason why I left Duke.
People like you cannot and will not ever understand my situation. I'm sure Daddy
worked very hard to send your rich self to college. While real people struggle.
I would also like to extend an invitation for you not to waste your or my time ever again.
Never being considered a part of your posh group of yuppies really hurts me to the heart.
Yeah, Right!  Because I don't care about you or your alumni."

My dissertation on my hate of Duke could go on, I hate the shiny-suited, slicked-back hair, empty suits on ESPN and CBS Sports who LOVE Duke and always defer to them or Coach K, including the fawning Dick Vitale and Jay Bilas and Mike Gminski...

And to quote from Ian Williams from his famous column, "Why I hate Duke" published in 'The Daily Tar Heel in 1990:
"...
Now I realize that school spirit is a pretty goofy thing to some people, but I’ll tell you something: I hate Duke with an infernal passion undying. I hate every leaf of every tree on that sickening campus. I hate every fake cherub Gothic piece of crap that litters the buildings like hemorrhoidal testaments to imagined superiority. When I see those Dookie boneheads shoe-polishing their faces navy blue on television, squandering their parents’ money with their fratty elitist bad sportsmanship antics and Saab stories, I want to puke all over Durham.
...
G*d bless them Tar Heel boys!"

G*d Bless us indeed.

Infinitely more love for Duke than I do Bama.  If Bama were playing Al-Queda, I'd go get an Orange and Blue Turban.

to use Snags' words....UNC was "resting the starters" right?

These teams and coaches obviously know that they MUST bring their 'A game' when meeting one another.  I love the Tarheels but they just didn't do this on Saturday.  They've beat Duke before at Cameron; while the home court advantage is a real variable factor, especially there of all places, I don't particular factor it as high for Carolina playing there so that's not an excuse.  They weren't playing to the high standards expected of a Tobacco Road team that is among the winningest programs in the nation and they got pummeled.

On another note, as much as the rivalry between the two schools is touted and magnified by the students, alumni, athletes, media, etc. at the end of the day we both know that we make each other better; that is, the challenge and motivation is always there to improve and progress because you don't want to loose to the other (and they are going to be great).  Perhaps its a respect that is never spoken or admitted.

Was gone all week and barely able to keep up with what happened.  Glad Duke got the split and then made it to the ACC Finals but Virginia is just the class of the league right now.  I think the NCAA seedings are about right for UVA, Duke and UNC given their respective seasons.

Virginia has one of the most complete teams in the field.  Great outside/inside play.  Duke can shoot it from all over the court and are very athletic.  No inside game at all, which killed them against teams with length like Kansas, Zona' and the Heels. Tarheel can correct me if I'm wrong but I think Carolina would be hell if they had anyone besides Paige who could fill it up consistently.  There are no dominant teams in the field so any of these could find themselves in the Final 4.  Florida certainly deserves a #1 seed but come on....it's the SEC.  They're going down.

Fair analysis all around.  My Tarheels had some disadvantages this season not the least of which was missing P.J. Hairston along with Reggie Bullock and Dexter Strickland, good, seasoned players all; made for a rough regular season which hit some lows and highs...and lows again.  Virginia was remarkable this year.  Anyway, looking forward to the fun that is always March Madness.
