Greatest Athlete of All Time Bracket
http://sports.espn.go.com/sportsnation/feature/index?page=greatestofalltime#top
Bo is closer to Roger Federer than logic and sanity would dictate.
Will likely get creamed next round against Muhammad Ali.
-
The fact that his competition (Roger Federer) even has 29% of the vote is a travesty.
-
No Jim Thorpe?
-
Ali a great boxer and showman? Sure. Can't touch Bo or even Deon on pure athleticism. I'd throw Mark Allen and Carl Lewis in that elite crowd too. You could probably include Hershel, Earl Campbell and Jordan too.
I've always looked at Ali and Jim Brown as overrated.

The problem is how do you really define or answer the question of who qualifies to be considered one of the greatest athletes of all time? Bo was a freak of nature. Worked out very little but was physically gifted enough to be elite in more than one sport. I think the very fact that Bo excelled at 2 sports at that level, puts him right up at the top of the heap. But, as the article points out, as great as Bo's accomplishments were, did he ever have to push through a 4 1/2 hour match in the heat against another elite athlete? I've always considered professional tennis players some of the best overall athletes in the world. If you've never played much tennis or paid close attention to what all they really do on the court....the incredible number of athletic movements they have to make and the length of time and conditions in which they do it...it's hard to appreciate it.
Is Michael Phelps one of the best? He just swims, right? But he's the best in all the strokes/movements, which are very different from one another. Why would you take a guy who can run a football well over someone who is at the top of their game doing Iron Man Triathlons, where they swim and bike and run literally for hours. I heard a debate on sports talk yesterday about who is/was the better basketball player...Jordan or LeBron. Magic Johnson weighed in saying LeBron is much bigger, much faster, much stronger...but Michael would beat him 10 out of 10 times if they went one-on-one. When you see guys like LeBron at 6'8" and 265 pounds, flying through the air, doing acrobatic dunks, doing power moves against guys much bigger, handling the ball like he does and draining long range 3's....how could he not be considered one of the greatest "athletes" of all time? Do you measure it by wins and losses? Does that factor in? If so, do we deduct points from Bo?
Don't get me wrong, I put Bo Jackson up against anyone who ever competed in any sport. I just think it's too hard to put everyone in one big group, given the diversity in what they do, and try to pick the best.

Agree. Which is why we must vote to prevent this injustice. Bugg be damned.
-
I looked at who IS included, and who is not, and it's a joke of a competition/poll no matter how you define "athlete".
-
Perhaps it's no surprise that Roger Federer fell to Bo Jackson, but how did it happen? "Federer fell victim to the draw," says Sport Science host John Brenkus. "He actually ranked in the top five in nearly 40 percent of all the categories in our metric, but he couldn't overcome the juggernaut that is Bo Jackson."
Which, to me translates to, "Bammers voted against Bo in droves."
-
No Jim Thorpe?
No injuns allowed.
-
http://definitivedose.com/sports/general/greatest-multi-sport-athletes
This is as good a list as I have seen. Thorpe was considered the best at least until the end of the '70s.
Can't argue Jackson or Sanders as finalists but it just depends on the criteria as JR mentioned.
Jim Brown was considered the best NFL runner ever, even some years after he retired. Very few would argue that. Then along came O.J. et al.
I've gotta say tennis is as demanding and grueling as any individual sport at the level of a Federer.
And like Snag's said, you have to be some kind of freak to master all of the various swim events like Phelps.

Lot of people don't know that Jim Brown was one of the best college lacrosse players of all time too.

That "northeast" division is pretty fuckin' weak.
Willie Mays
Jackie Robinson
Pele
Tony Hawk
If there is justice in this world, the final two will be Bo & Jim.

Tony Hawk? So, Tony Hawk is in the same contest regarding athleticism that Bo Jackson and Jim Thorpe are in. Is Carrot Top in this thing too?

Hey, Carrot Top is one buff ginger. I guarantee he's one hell of an athlete not on steroids.

Bo used to stutter...Ali stutters now.
-
Bo used to stutter...Ali stutters now.
B-B-B-Bazzzzzzinga!!!!!

And has more moves.

Bump.
Bo's up again.

Gretzsky advancing past Lewis is a travesty.

BO kicking ass right now...Float like Holland...Sting like a Tiger
-
This must not have made it's rounds on the Bama message boards yet.
Bo is crushing Ali.
Definitely thought this would be a tougher match-up than Roger fucking Federer.
-
These seedings are stupid. No way Bo and MJ should be matched up in the semi's...
-

Should be a Jim brown/Bo final. Anything less is shameful. Personally wanted a Bo/Lewis final but apparently the hockey gods hate Carl.

You think Bo beats MJ? Not saying he shouldn't, but I'm not sure he will.
-

Not sure of that at all actually. Thats just what I personally think should be the final. It's a shame Jesse Owens also got overlooked.
-
This poll is stupid anyways because it doesn't really specify. If you are talking about overall athlete you can't beat Bo....the guy was a All Star in 2 major sports.
Michael Jordan IMO greatest basketball player of all time. How the fuck are you supposed to compare the two?
-
You think Bo beats MJ? Not saying he shouldn't, but I'm not sure he will.
I think so because of the framing of the question.
Greatest athlete of all time.
Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. (I will slap the first motherfucker to say it's LaBron.) Greatest player of your sport is be considered in the entire equation, certainly, but not the main criteria, IMO.
How much athleticism is involved in your sport, and how much you are able to translate that to other athletic activities should be the main factor, which is why I go Bo every time.
Jordan probably beat out Phelps mostly due to the fact that he did play Baseball professionally as well, although, clearly not as well as Bo did as his second best sport. Isn't Jordan supposed to be a not-too-shabby golfer too?
-

I think MJ is more than the greatest BB player ever. He's in that Elite of the elite athlete conversation too with the likes of Bo, Hershel, Jim Brown, etc. Agree with you that LeBron isn't in either category, best BB player or Athlete. May one day be best ever BB player, but not yet.
-
Isn't Jordan supposed to be a not-too-shabby golfer too?
Yes. But if you consider that his "third" sport, then you have to say that Bo's third sport is track. Where he was pretty damn good (better than Jordan in golf).

Exacly. "Athletes", come in varying shapes and sizes, and with different skill sets. I get how you have guys like Federer or Ali in an athlete conversation, but how the fuck do you compare them to players of very different sports?
-

Can we all agree that Earnhardt, Sr., has no place in this discussion? A fucking driver? Fuck off.
-
Can we all agree that Earnhardt, Sr., has no place in this discussion? A fucking driver? Fuck off.
Yes, and can we agree that a two sport athlete has no place in a popularity contest with those who dominated a single sport. I still say the article I posted on page one of this thread is the best list we have. BTW Bo went from one sport right in to another with limited training nor the benefit of full workouts with his teamates. And a boxer trains how long for how many fights in one year on average...anyone know?

Concur.

Yes, we can agree on that.

In fact, there are several in this "poll" that have no business in the conversation of "greatest athlete ever", even though they may actually be athletes. Tiger Woods for instance. Roger Federer. Just to name a couple.
That said, and as Chad noted, the way the question is posed means a lot. However, I think, based on who they included, when they said "athlete" they meant "sports figure" You simply can't include Dale Earnhardt Sr. in any talk of "greatest athlete ever" not by any stretch of the use of the word athlete.

That was the most I have watched of NASCAR in like......forever. That was only because that wreck was on every channel. Lots of Bud Light was spilled that day.

Hopefully most of those voting realize it best athlete not "most magical basketball highlight maker".
-
24,628 votes Bo leads 75%. Legend of Bo continues!!!
-
This is getting interesting. I'm thinking a Bo vs. Jackie Robinson will be a tough match. If it turns into a popularity contest--which it really is, it should be close. All I know for sure is that Bo is the best athlete I've ever seen. And we are all extremely lucky to have seen some of it in person.

If the world were perfect, this bracket would have just started with only 2 - Bo and Jim Thorpe. Period.

Jackie Robinson? Shouldn't be there.
Barrier breaking does not an athlete make. I can think of 100 greater athletes without spending much time in thought. And no, bicycle boy doesn't make the list.
-
Jackie will be beaten by Thorpe. No doubt about it.
I did think it was interesting though that of the final four, two were from Alabama.

Should've been 3 - Owens.

It's because we Alabama men are born naturally gifted athletes with huge penises. It's in the soil.

I agree JR shouldn't be there and I don't feel 80% of other names belong in the conversation. It's terribly subjective when it comes to who is the better athlete and this is really nothing more than a popularity/name recognition/athletic accomplishment contest.
I agree with GH about if it comes down to it, my list has Jim Thorpe vs. Bo. But since it really comes down to the aforementioned in reality (despite the name of the contest), I bet JR makes it close on his accomplishment and name recognition.
Where did you move to Alabama from?
Native Alabamian, Native-American in my blood. Generations of long schlonged men in my family. I don't like to brag about my huge dick, it just came up in the conversation.
-

Seems like a case of bitching about something before it happens, and then it never happening. You and my wife should join a support group for this.
It will be Bo and Jim obviously. If Bo is kicking Jordan's ass this much, it's obvious that justice is being served. And Jordan deserves to be in the conversation, he just doesn't deserve to beat Bo (or Jim).
-
Bo in the finals. Although they said he barely squeaked by Jordan...tha Fuck?
-
This is a fine specimen of Alabama-black snake.
.....but it ain't no goddamn beaucoup
-
Bo in the finals. Although they said he barely squeaked by Jordan...tha Fuck?
Probably want to keep it dramatic...
Weird because they recognized him beating the shit out of Ali, who I would have thought would have been tougher competition.
Yet Federer, legitimately did give Bo a run for his money, which is asinine, but I firmly believe can be attributed to bammers on teh intarwebz.
-
.....but it ain't no goddamn beaucoup
Don't shit me, man!
-
Bo has the luxury of having a number of fan bases in his corner. Besides Auburn, he has Raiders fans, Royals fans (both of them) and possibly even some stray White Sox fans voting for him. I don't see how anyone takes him out.

Bo final against Brown. Votez.

"Allegedly" threw rocks at. You do know that he can still chase you down with that fake hip, don't you? Do you want to be taken out by a rock? Personally, I believe he is innocent.

So Bo won, naturally.
But now ESPN is running a "Who SHOULD have won?" poll.
We voted all week, but now they want us to vote again.
Bo is currently losing to Michael Jordan, whom he beat head-to-head.

Haters hating in the video.
Also, Dennis Dodd is livid.
https://twitter.com/dennisdoddcbs
Will only post his tweets, not all the hateraide he retweeted.
So now Bo Jackson is the greatest athlete of ALL TIME? Hoo boy.
Bo played more than 116 games three times in MLB career. Played 4 seasons in NFL. Greatest athlete of ALL TIME? Jim Thorpe is freaking.
Bo Jackson greatest athlete of ALL TIME? Shaun White feels slighted.
Jackie Robinson might have something to say about Bo being the GAAT.
Bob Gibson too.
Don't you have to play sports for -- you know -- a long time to be considered greatest of all time?
Just in: Mario Mendoza greatest shortstop of all time.
Bo's commercials were greatest of all time.
Jackie Robinson. Tell me I'm wrong.
Can't be GAAT and treat one sport as a "hobby".
-

-
fudge that noise. Bitch move by ESPN running another poll.
I don't understand why they are pissy about it. Didn't they just raise Bo's cred with that awesome 30 for 30? If I remember correctly didn't they kind of imply that he was a larger than life superhero?
-
I think it's nothing more than a PR move. It's a way to let the most vocal detractors of the results vent. I maintain the vote was primarily a name recognition contest anyway. It just so happened that the real best athlete won. I think the timing of the 30 for 30 prob helped Bo a lot.
I think it was Dodd that tweeted something about the longevity of Bo's career, questioning if an athlete needed to have more seasons than Bo to be considered. Being really sarcastic about it. To me, the fact that he accomplished more in his short span than most with many times the length of career IS one of the main reasons he is the best.
-
I guess this poll will remain open for a week, leading up to the show it was set up to promote which runs this Sunday at 2:30.
Bo's still in the lead, in case you're wondering.
-
Jim Thorpe is the GAAT, this poll voting is for the GAAT behind Jim Thorpe. Love Bo, but he's no Thorpe. Also, I was a huge Earnhardt Sr. fan, but he does not belong on the list, neither does Tiger Woods (Dwayne Johnson and Curt Henning would've been better selections).
-
