Mulligan's in Marietta...this story was on all of the local (and apparently some national news) yesterday:

Curious’ shirt choice
Critics call tavern’s Obama design racist
By Jay Fitzgerald
Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - Updated 1m ago
The Curious George cartoon character is getting dragged into the presidential race again in an ugly way - and Boston’s WGBH-TV isn’t happy.
A Georgia tavern owner has been selling T-shirts showing the cartoon monkey happily eating a banana with the words “Obama in ’08” written underneath.
The tavern owner, described as an “ultra-conservative,” has since seen his Marietta, Ga., establishment picketed by outraged critics who say the characterization of presidental candidate Barack Obama as a monkey is racist.
Well...it IS racist! Bunch of damn racist bigots!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution jumped on the story yesterday, while the popular online Drudge Report featured the controversy on its heavily trafficked Web site.
Curious George, created by the late longtime Cambridge residents H.A. and Margaret Rey, is a beloved figure among kids and adults alike across the country - and especially in Boston.
And I should care about this because...?
WGBH, which co-produces a “Curious George” children’s television show, isn’t happy with George’s use against Obama, an African-American.
“It’s offensive,” said Jennifer Welsh, a spokeswoman for the PBS-affiliated station. “We would never grant permission for this.”
But it wasn’t clear yesterday what could be legally done about the T-shirt being peddled by the Mulligan Food & Spirits owner, Mike Norman, who has called his product “cute.”
A spokesman for Boston’s Houghton-Mifflin, which owns the book rights to Curious George, couldn’t be reached for comment. A spokeswoman for NBC Universal, which owns the film rights to Curious George, also couldn’t be reached for comment.
NBC Universal and WGBH co-produce the “Curious George” TV show.
This isn’t the first time Curious George has been dragged into the current presidential race.
Earlier this year, loudmouth radio jock Rush Limbaugh apologized on air for laughing at a caller’s comment that her daughter thought Obama looked like Curious George.

I'm in.
-
Guess where I'm going to lunch? By the way, I'll be packing as I normally do. If you hear anything about "shots fired" in Marietta, it's just me clearing a parking space.
As I said before, there's no criticism of Barack Obama that wouldn't be construed as racist. There’s no touching this guy. You can’t say anything about his appearance. You can’t say anything about his policies. You can’t say anything about his history. You can’t say anything about his education. You can’t even call him by his full name.
Liberalism is a Mental Disorder.

You got that right GarMan!
This place is actually on Whitlock just east of Marietta Square. I've driven by it a few times but never been there. It looked like there were quite a few Bikers hanging out there yesterday (from what I saw on the local Fox news broadcast)...I thought that was particularly funny because the reporter interviewed an African American Biker dude (Black Pistons M/C, maybe?) and he was laughing in her face about people thinking the Curious George T-Shirt was "Racist"!
By the bye, Gov. Perdue signed the enhanced Concealed Carry law today so we should be able to carry our "heaters" into this joint (and Diamond Dave's) now.
-
You guys going there for lunch today? Let me know, and I'll meet you there
-
I would wear that T and I am a conservative. Does that make me a racist?
-

I have a conference call at 1:30 PM, but I should be there around 2PM. I've never been there before, but I'll try to sit at the bar and wear a black Cigar Aficionado cap. You game?

Alot of black voters will vote for Obama because he's black. Hillary will get some because she's white or a woman.
The difference will be argued, and it has already started, that white voters are doing it because they are racist.
Politics suck.

Let me know how the place is...maybe I'll stop and have an adult beverage there after work. Didn't know you were in the Upper Georgia TigersX group "DnATL" but I guess that should've been obvious by your nickname.

Yes. Racist Bigot!

Quick update...
- I didn't see anyone outside protesting anything...
- They ran out of shirts, but they expect more on Friday.
- It's just an old biker bar.
- I was the youngest guy there until DnATL showed up.

This place is an old Del Taco/Taco Bell building that been converted into a hole-in-the-wall bar. I think the median age in the building was 60, and that's including me at sub-40. Many of the folks sitting at the bar actually had walking sticks/canes. Some of those who didn't clearly needed one.
One of the old guys walked up to my table at one point and went off on this rant about yesterday's protesters. I could barely follow along, but he was definitely a hard line Conservative. Apparently, he was also pissed that he couldn't find a spot to sit at the bar. The place was packed when I had walked in... He also had to park in the lot next door, which he clearly wasn't happy about.
Good times!

I didn't smell any vinegar, but I thought that I caught a whiff of strawberries at one point.
That may have been the crusty cougar sitting at the corner of the bar. :gig:

Sounds like the free advertising on the local/national news has bought in enough folk to piss off the regulars by fucking up their habits...well...old folk don't like change!

By complete douche, do you mean a guy who would say "I'm in", and then not show up?
Or, were you the guy out back begging guys to give you a ride so you could practice your "weinie bite"?

Actually, I have recently changed brands of douche, and I just looove this new sour cream and onion variety from Trader Joes
And true to his debates with AWK, GarMan is definitely not a fan of the fist

I hate that I could not get over there (I'm on the East Side today) but I'll be on the N. West Side on Friday...I'll plan on stopping by there for a beer lunch.

I figured the liquid out of a fresh bottle of Ron Baccardi and a new can of Coke was safe enough, but I don't think I'd eat there unless I had a pizza delivered in the parking lot.

They may have a few Nacho Bellgrande's left in the back that they could warm up for you - 1987 was a good vintage.
Saniflush also refuses to eat there, since he did not swallow during his wienie bite practice runs.

Man if you will eat something Jeffie attempted to cook nothing in that place should scare you.

True dat... This place was on par with DDs, but in some ways, it looked a little dirtier. :puke:

Leaving tomorrow morning for my own upper Georgia meeting. Gonna get together with a few friends at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta to check out some guys named Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmitt. Heard they played a few classic tunes.
Hope they serve ice cold beverages there. Concerts tend to be a bit better with a few frosty ones.
-
Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta
That's actually in Afro-retta - down off of Lakewood
When the Eagles opened the new Broncos stadium in August 2001 (pre-9/11), your buddy Henley dedicated "Already Gone" to Dubya. Well, Dubya is still in office - which just proves that old idiot libbie rockers should just shut up and play.
-
Just about all of the so called stars should just shut their big fat yappers and stick to what they do best.
-

Nobody called me out on this? I got Lakewood / HiFi Buys Amphitheater confused with the Verizon Amphitheater (Atlanta version), which is in Alpharetta. I figured he meant Lakewood, and got the name confused with Birmingham's Verizon Amphitheater at Oak Mountain. Too many Verizon Amphitheaters- I'll just blame Bush for confusing me with all these corporate naming rights.

Just got back. Incredibly nice area. Great venue with unreal sound. I think it's brand new...no? The Eagles played for 3+ hours and absolutely nailed it. Good times. Only drawback...$8 drafts. What the fuck is that about?

They must have gone to the same Marketing school that the great folks at Six Flags attended.
