Russell Wilson arrived at Auburn last night and will spend all day with coaches today discussing offense, scheme, etc.

schadjoe Joe Schad
Russell Wilson could soon be in position to try to emulate some of what Cam Newton did in his one year on The Plains

Former NC State QB Russell Wilson has an off day today. Visiting... Auburn.

I didn't ever watch NC State. What kind of talent are we talking here?

Looks really good against ACC defenses. A "do-it-all" kind of guy.
Decent arm. Quick. Not that strong. His biggest drawback is that he's short. Only like 5'11 or something like that.
I wish he could have come to Auburn in December. If he had time in the spring, he'd be the perfect transition from Cam to Frazier/Pike.

This. I still like the idea of the guy coming here....if it happens. Whether he's the second coming or not that great, it can never hurt to have a guy on board with a ton of starting experience against D1 competition. And the fact that he had one year with Playa of the Year credentials means he's got to have some decent skillz.

Am I the only one that doesn't like this? Show some confidence in the guys we already have there. If not, whats to stop some stud HS QB from thinking that if he signs with Auburn he will be sat for a transfer QB. We have enough talent at QB to get us through this year with a winning record and then hand it over to Frazier or Pike. Just seems a little win at all costs to me.

The problem I have is that Trotter is still just such an unknown at this point. The guy may set the world on fire and I really believe just about anyone with reasonable talent can light it up in Malzahn's system. But....what if he gets hurt? Mosely? Now, I'm not feeling too confident.

I'm witcha.

At this point, I say give him one of the 73 available scholarships and see what he can do. He's only good for a year anyway.
-
Sorry injuries happen, and seasons continue. This just seems shitty. You can't always have a Kodi or Caudle there, and this will eventually blow up in our faces.

I don't see this as being an issue after this season. Unless Pike pulls the old switcheroo this year, it won't affect recruiting long term. After watching Mosely at the A-Day game, I would be scared shitless if something happened to Trotter (who just happens to be playing on two surgically repaired knees, by the way). This is just a nice insurance policy imnsho.

Humble down, bitch.
Was Tyrik Rollison a happy camper when this staff brought in JUCO stud, Cam Newton? Was Trotter? Is Frazier happy about 6'5" Zeke Pike coming in? If Trotter is the better player and fit for this offense than Wilson or Frazier or Mosely, he'll play. The best guy should be the man whether he's a senior or not. There's nothing in this that says Russell Wilson will step in and be the #1 guy if he does sign. We are waaayy down in numbers and have two totally inexperienced QB's on the roster and a true freshman coming in. I say load up as much talent as you can at every position and the ones that can't cut it or don't like it....quit like a Goode and sign with Terry Bowden at UNA.
-
I certainly don't have a problem with this guy coming in. It would mean more competition and competition makes everyone that much better. Or, one can always transfer like Rollison did.
-
Or he could come in and compete well but just barely lose out. Then he could stand up and give a speech and then spend the rest of the season at WR.
-
If a player's scared of competition they shouldn't be playing D1 football.

No shit.
If Trotter and Moseley get antsy and want to transfer, then peace out. This is division one football!

So yall are ok with this shit of bringing in a hired gun for a one and done? It just feels dirty and it won't be long until we are known as rent a qb U.

Cam Newton?
Same thing with Caudle and Trotter.
Wilson is no Cam Newton.
But Caudle, Trotter, and Moseley are not winning SEC quarterbacks.
Wilson can provide instant experience and athletic ability.
This is very much a transition year as our defense is young, our o-line is young, and our running backs are young. Bring in Wilson to see if he can help us get 8 or 9 wins and then work towards 2012.
I don't see how it could hurt especially since we already have Frazier and Pike (presumably) in the bag.

I'm going to change my stance a little on the Wilson situation, if it happens, I'm DEFINITELY down with it. It tells me that our Coaching Staff ain't gonna settle on "rebuilding year", they're ALL IN....So am I. I'm still not sure about him being successful against SEC defenses, but he does have more experience at QB than Chris Todd, Kodi Burns, Cam Newton, Neil Caudle, Barrett Trotter & Clint Moseley combined...so, that's a huge positive.

I'm changing my mind on the subject after hearing similar opinions on Finebaum from so-called AU alumni that negatively fueled what would have been an outstanding idea had it been Alabama checking Wilson out. I thought it might prove disruptive but if Gus Malzahn wants this guy I want him too.
That's all of the fucking persuasion I require.
-
The bammers aren't happy that Auburn could land Russell Wilson, their ringleader Paw is basically showing his hand by putting the "AU alum" tag on a couple callers that aren't happy about it. I'll say this, if Auburn is doing something to upset SPuat, then Auburn doing something right.

You know it's pretty special when the entire premise of Paw's show is about hating Auburn.
Finebaum and Friends is a more accurate title.

While true, there's also a thing called team chemistry, and the fact that the guys that have been on campus, have worked hard in THIS PROGRAM, WITH THESE TEAM MATES. Bringing in a guy that everyone knows is only good for one season, that has been playing in another program, and you have no idea how hard he's worked, or what kind of guy he is...it can have a negative effect. You never know how that will work out. It's dangerous. I've heard a few coaches talk about bringing in transfers and JCs. It's a risky business. You can't build for the long term that way. And yes, I know we've been recruiting well and that shouldn't be an issue, but just saying. The guys on the field, coaches and players, know if Trotter or Mosely have what it takes to play at this level. If they think either do, especially Trotter and Mosely, then bringing in this guy may not be dangerous. Everybody knew there was a void at QB last off season...Cam worked out. If that's the general feeling again this year, then this could work out too. Still, risky.
-
Cam Newton?

Same was said about Todd. He performed well, and that team's shortcomings in 2009 were largely Defensive, not QB.
Bottom line: you have NO WAY to know that.

Have to agree...but, you can't compare Newton to Todd. It's not fair.

Did someone compare Newton and Todd?
-
Yeah, what the fuck ever. No way in hell you can make any call on Trotter or Mosely.
-
Did someone compare Newton and Todd?
Not directly, but I was just sayin'.
-
Not directly, but I was just sayin'.
Not even indirectly or by inference.
THS made the proclamation that Trotter and Mosely are not winning SEC QBs. I noted that the same was said about Todd prior to 2009, and they even had a body or work to use as evidence from 2008. He wound up setting AU passing records, and the offense was a top 15 offense. The team was mediocre, but Todd was effective.
-
And before someone tries to put words in my mouth and say I'm saying Todd or Moseley will be great...I'm not even remotely predicting that either. But it's stupid to proclaim a kid can't play, when he's never played a meaningful down in the SEC.
-
I'm not sure if this says anything about Trotter/Mosely or not. Everything I've heard/read is that the coaches really like Trotter and are still reserved on Mosely's ability. Bottom line for me is we have two unproven QB's and a true freshman to work with in the SEC. If nothing else, this is insurance with having a pretty talented guy with tons of D1 experience on your roster. Like was said earlier, if the coaches want to give him a look, gotta' trust that. Maybe they aren't too comfortable facing this season with what they have.

I'm just going to go ahead and say it. After watching them both going against the green defense during the A-Day game, I can say that in my professional opinion Mosley will not take a meaningful snap unless something happens to Trotter.

I agree mostly, as long as it's pretty clear after spring that they weren't impressed with Trotter and Mosely.

Wilson's best season statistically was 2009.
224 Comp. 378 Att. 59.3% 3027Yds. 8.0 YPA 31TD 11Int 147.8 Rtg.
That was on a 5-7 ACC team that played the likes of Gardner Webb, Murray State, Wake Forrest and Duke to whom they lost!
His best season for wins was 9-4 (5-3 ACC) last season.
Kid's a good athlete, and may be better than what we have, who knows? But I wouldn't be all giddy about him off his body of work in the ACC.
-
And he has a limited body of work vs SEC defense. They opened vs SC in 2008 and 2009. 0-2. Lost 34-0, and 7-3.

Anyone that is giddy about this possibility is just kidding themselves. I just think since there are about 60 remaining scholarships to give anyway; and knowing that beyond Trotter, the prospects are slim at QB, it is worth giving him a shot...at least for added depth.

No problem with bringing him in to COMPETE. Bring him in as the #1 with it as his job to lose...NO.

I doubt any of our staff sees it as his to lose.

Nobody, but that's essentially what they did with Cam. All I'm saying on Wilson is A: I don't think he's anything to get all moist about. Bring him in and let him compete, and hope for the best. B: This move always has the potential to cause other players that have been on campus paying their dues to get pissed. No, they shouldn't but it has to suck to be working hard with your team, then suddenly some guy t'fers in and takes your spot. Good coaching and personnel management certainly helps, and having good leaders on the team too, but it's risky all the same.

We don't need him anyway. We've got two Chris Todds ready to step in and compete!

There is a huge difference between coming in five months ago and coming in now.
I have come full circle on this being a bad idea.
-
He's playing Class A ball right now. If he decides to show up in time for summer practice he's gonna have to forgo some salary. If I was him I would tell all the coaches recruiting me I'm sticking with the sport that is paying me some money. After all, he's not even close to being a pro prospect in the NFL is he?

He would rather play pro football than pro baseball. His dad was the last player cut from the Chargers in 1981 or so and the kid wants to live his dad's dream. The old man died a few weeks/months ago.
From what I have read about his family, they are successful in whatever they do. This is not a shady deal of any sort.
All that being said, I am ambivalent on the whole thing. I will take the "wait and see" attitude...unless I don't.

NOI want a Tony Richardson every down type in case we aren't putting up the numbers in the air. A short yardage specialist won't do at Gus' pace and neither will a 6'3" or 6-4 TE/HB. I thought Curry might have gotten a shot but that idea vanished and with an all but new OL this should be important.
Get crackin'!

Wisconsin is Wilson's best bet. He can walk into that gig. But he will have to beat out three guys that are dead set on starting at Auburn that know the No Huddle. I have already turned the page on the drama that almost was. We will be just fine without him.

Yes, it must be nearing time for it to fall.

Judging by what I have read, I'm gonna go out on a short limb and say Frazier will be the starter when the '11 season begins.
Rumor mill says RW has decided in opting for Wisconsin because the Auburn coaches wouldn't guarantee him the starting position.
....and the inevitable hammer of course.
