Title: Who would you cast?
Post by: Kaos on April 03, 2011, 12:22:19 AM
This is where I pick a movie I think was great (or at least good), we pretend they're going to remake it (which is probably inevitable) and we set the cast.

Today's move is

Cool Hand Luke

Primary roles to cast:

Luke (originally played by Paul Newman)

Dragline (originally George Kennedy)

Captain (originally Strother Martin)

My choices:

Luke - Bradley Cooper

Dragline -  Jeff Bridges

Captain - Samuel L. Jackson

Other convicts:

James Earl Jones (maybe as a boss instead),  Malkovich, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi, John Gooden, Joe Pantoliano and Johnny Depp (who should be in every movie).

I think with a movie like this you would have to keep in mind the place and time that it was depicting.  1960's Southern prison farm would not allow a black man to be in charge so Samuel L. Jackson would be out unless you want to invoke the Hollywood tradition of Rule of Cool (if it's cool it doesn't have to be historically accurate, logical, or physically possible).

Luke - Edward Norton

Dragline - Michael Clark Duncan

Captain - Christopher Walken

Boss Paul - Ed Harris

Who they probably will cast

Luke - Ryan Reynolds

Dragline -  Channing Tatum

Captain - Liam Nielson

Other convicts: Martin Lawrence; Eddie Murphy

Who I'd like to see cast

Luke - Wahlberg

Dragline - John Goodman

Captain - John Voight

Others - Lawrence Fishburn, Buscemi (could also be the captain)

This is a difficult thread....

Also, there aren't very many guys around that could play Luke.  The Newman types are a thing of the past.

That was the hardest choice for me.  You need the All-American looking guy who could play the anti-authority part without looking like a complete tool.  That's why I went with Norton.  I started to go with Depp for that, but I just couldn't imagine him being the low key guy who was still the man like Newman did it.

Newman was "cool."  He was cool in every movie he ever made.

Norton?  Too cerebral.  Talks too much.

Depp?  Too goofy.  I wouldn't take him seriously.

Wahlberg?  Meh.  But I chose him because if he didn't say much, he'd at least look the part.

The next movie we do should be The Good, The Bag, and The Ugly.

I got nothing because any remake of this movie should cause those remaking it to be horsewhipped repeatedly.

We're all forgetting the most important part.  Lucille the car wash girl.

Step the fuck back. If you are gonna get someone to step in Paul Newman's shoes, it better be someone with more clout than Bradley fucking Cooper. Think Liam Nesson/Tom Hanks level. You insulted me in a major way. Paul Newman's grave just measured on the Richter scale.

I like the above choices, but would have to go with Tomothy Olyphant for Josey.

But since it is one of my favorite movies, I don't think Clint is replaceable.

That's kind of the point.  I'm picking movies that should never be remade.  True Grit was one of those.

Arthur should never be remade.  Neither should Footloose.  Or Red Dawn. Or Fright Night. Or Commando. Or Porkys. Or The Warriors.  Or Mad Max. Or Yellow Submarine. Or Heavy Metal. Or Poltergeist. Or An American Werewolf In London. Or Robocop. Or Fletch.

All of those are in varying stages of remakedom.

Sick.

I'm reaching for movies that won't likely ever be touched, though.

As for Olyphant?  I like the concept, but I don't think he's got the stare.

K, what about Mel Gibson to play a part? You mentioned Mad Max and I thought that Mel could contribute. He already has a damaged public image which could help bolster his part and he has that rough around the edges look and raspy voice. I certainly think he could play any part given to him.

You choose your own cast.

All the old goodies are being remade because there is no original creativity in Hollywood anymore. Simple as that.

Arthur. One was enough.

Red Dawn. Not even they knew it would be a cult hit. How can you recreate the chemistry that Red Dawn started for all of those actors? You can't. It will be just fluff. We'll hear a new generation run around yelling "WOLVERINES", but it won't be the same.

Fright Night. Another of those movies that just popped up as a favorite. Do you really think when they created that they thought it would catch on like it did.

The others have been made in different forms already. They are copycats. But the originals are still the best.

As for Robocop, I think they are on like Robocop 16 by now.

I think most classic/cult originals should not be remade. Remaster it. Digitalize it. Whatever. But you can't stuff the genie back in the bottle. And then expect to jerk it out again.

True Grit was just a name they stuck on new actors. The actors tried, but there can be only 1. (oh wait. That is highlander. Are they remaking that one too?)

Josey - Ron Perlman (I could totally see him as a hay-seed farmer turned revenge minded killer)
Lone Watie - ??
Laura - Pick someone skinny and blonde who can act scared
Redleg - Ray Liotta ( I have trouble picturing him out of city surroundings, but he can pull of the evil)
Fletcher - Dennis Quaid

In honor of the season:

Let's recast The Ten Commandments

Parts to cast:

Moses:  Charlton Heston
Ramses: Yul Brenner
Nefretiri: Anne Baxter
Dathan: Edward G Robinson (least believable Egyptian ever)
Sephora: Yvonne Di Carlo
Joshua: John Derek

My cast:

Moses:

I got nothing.  Nobody has that kind of presence.  Can't think of anybody.

Really?  You can't think of someone more Moses-like than Charlton "White Gentleman" Heston?

Any brown guy with thick black hair and a speech impediment would suffice.
