Title: Any Tourney Surprises?
Post by: Snaggletiger on March 14, 2011, 11:03:42 AM
Every year there are teams that get in and those that don't....that make you

This year was no different.  Some observations.  UGA over Bammer.  UGA may have played a tougher OOC schedule but they only beat one NCAA bound OOC team..UAB...by 2 points. Lost to Notre Dumb, Temple and Xavier...and lost to the Tahd twice in the last 8 days.  I would have preferred both be traveling for an NIT first round game.

Two teams that probably played as tough a schedule as anyone, Meat Chicken State and Tennessee.  Kudos for scheduling tough but you were both 19-14.  University of Meat Chicken goes 20-13.  Nope, shouldn't be in it IMO.

And could any league in history get more undeserved love than the Big Least?  11 engraved invitations to the Dance?  ELEVEN?  Every year, this league is pimped like they're a collection of the NBA elite.  They haven't won the big prize in 7 years.  ESPN shows a Big East game every night of the season.  Very athletic conference but so what?  Eleven teams?

Its seems one of the sexy picks to go far is San Diego St and Belmont. I can't help but think BYU will make some noise too even though their sexually active Center is off the team. He is busy pounding something else right now. I think there will be several surprises early on but it will be mostly the usual suspects as it gets weeded out. I also think Ohio St is overrated. Don't get me wrong, they look good, but I think they will choke.

I was paying attention to Belmont's draw because for some strange reason, I've sort of, kind of, semi-followed them this year.  They don't really have any notable wins but they've got a solid club.  Very big inside and can shoot the lights out.  I was looking at them as a team to make a little noise early but I don't like the Wisconsin match up.  Now, you have to understand...the fact that I hate that match up menas that Belmont will blow their doors off.  In about 25 years of getting in March Madness pools, I've won ONCE.  I'm usually out of it by 2:30 in the afternoon on opening day.

Werd to your mother.  How they got in is beyond me.  Must have been on name recognition, like Michigan State.

Seriously though, I like their chances of making it to the Sweet 16.  Kind os surprised at how they struggled in the ACC tourney after how they closed out the season.

Yeah, I was very disappointed in that last performance.  Pretty awful really but that always happens when they try to play a Dook-style outside game...especially against Dook.  I don't know what on earth Roy Williams was thinking.  But, I got to hand it to Dook they have a very strong team this year especially.  We'll see how well they do against some other strong teams outside of the ACC.

As to the Tarheels I expect them to go back to the usual inside game which ought to get them well-advanced.  They are a very young team after all and still working on tactics and game rhythm.  (I'm not ready to get my pitch-fork out yet!)

And they did win the ACC Regular Season outright against a much much more experienced team.

And Roy Williams did win Coach of the Year.

So I'm ok with that; no matter how far they advance it's been a good year (not a great one).

I was listening to Sporting News Radio this morning and the host was playing the CBS March Madness theme song you hear at every commercial break during the tournament.  He was making up words to it and I was lol'ing my briefs in the car.  Even the last part where he sang, Coach K is gay and Duke really sucks.  Funny stuff.

Now that is pretty funny.

Speaking of CBS sports nothing irritates me more when they have Mike Gminski on as the color commentator for any Duke/ Carolina match-up; he's about as unbiased as the shiny-suited, slicked-back-hair Syracuse grads on ESPN.

What kind of slaw, red, mustard, mayo, vinegar based?  These are important details before I start to hate on someone putting slaw on a BBQ sammy.   Have you ever been to "The Pit" in Raleigh.  Ed Mitchells place, he is a legend.

Vinegar-based, of course.  But some places I like use a Mustard-vinegar base.  I prefer a slaw that is not sweet.

I hate to say it but I can't recall visiting The Pit before unfortunately.

That slaw recipe sounds great!  Appreciate the recommendation.

Yeah, sweet slaw is an abomination, as is sugar in cornbread.  I like most other slaws though, I just can't put vinegar slaw on a bbq sammy.  I have actually tired a tomoato slaw that was really good.  I just don't have the recipe and the guy that made it serves it at his restaurant and will not give it up.

Don't know how I'd compare IF....I had the intraweb skillz to properly submit a bracket, but I'm still doing pretty good.  Better than most years for me.  This is a great tourney, by the way.  Tons of down to the wire games. Meat Chicken came back and had my Dukies on the ropes.  They threw a 1-3-1 at Duke and rattled the hell out of them.  Several crappy possessions down the stretch and they lucked out on not going to overtime.

VCU is coming out of nowhere.  They freakin' crushed Purrdew.  And did anyone see the back and forth between Pitino and Sir Charles?  Barkely has been saying the Big East is overrated..clap, clap, clap ,clap, clap....overrated...and Pitino's feathers got ruffled

Was wondering if tarheel was as nervous as I the last 5 mins of the unc/wash game? Many chances to put it away. Sloppy rebounding. Unc went to the outside too much. Thankfully it was Washington not Duke or Kansas or it woulda been bad trouble. We'll have to play better outside d to advance past 16.

And on Texas losing.....bwahahahaha....... :haha:

Regretfully, I'd missed it (shocker I know) but I had another, more important commitment.  I don't know why in the heck they are playing the outside game!  It throws-off the entire tempo.  That NBA-style strategy with Carolina frustrates the heck out of me.   I just want to yell out stop trying to play to the cameras and do what you do best in the inside!  Getting my blood-pressure up this afternoon!

Why does UNC have a goat as a mascot?

It's a Ram.

The story goes back to 1922 or so; one of the football players back then was nicknamed "The Battering Ram".  The school did not have a mascot so someone suggested a ram and the rest is history.

Would you like my input on that issue?

Now that is always a better story than the less-than-exciting reason for having a Ram as a mascot.

The 'Tarheel' is most well-known as an attribution made about North Carolinian's by General Robert E. Lee himself saying that North Carolinian's stick to the bloodiest of work as if they have tar on their heels.

There is an even older use of the name dating back to the American Revolutionary Battle of Stony Point where North Carolinian Continental Line troops were used by Gen. Anthony Wayne to lay down a fiery and withering assault against the British at the battle to divert their attention from a surprise flanking maneuver.   The battle was a complete success for the Americans and General George Washington himself congratulated the troops and Gen. Wayne saying the success was due to the North Carolinian's holding the line against the British as if they had tar on their heels.

There are other stories about the etymology of the name 'Tarheel' but these two are favored.

I know you're being facetious but for the benefit of others not in the know on this issue the 26th North Carolina Regiment advanced farther at Pickett's Charge than any other Confederate unit and paid a terrible price for doing so; by then end of the third day of fighting the 26th had 90% casualties in dead and wounded, the highest of any unit North or South in the entire War.

North Carolina offered up for sacrifice more of her sons than any other state of the old Confederacy;  the first soldier killed in the war was a North Carolinian.  North Carolina regiments made it farther into Union lines at Gettysburg AND Chickamauga; North Carolinians captured the last Union battery, made the last charge, fired the last volley, and surrendered the last man at Appomattox Court House!

*edit:
I should also make a point to mention that the University of North Carolina is the oldest State University in the United States.

I had noticed that too!  :)

I knew between that and mentioning Pickett's Charge we could give him some grief.

Well, as a post-script to this year's NC2A Tournament I was not entirely surprised at the UCONN win; however I was surprised at how amateurish Butler looked against them in the final game after having fought to get that far in the tournament.  Maybe I'm being too critical but that is how it looked to me.

Two things that I noticed and I can't remember which talking head it was, UConn picked the zone apart once Butler went to it and the other, how in the fuck to do only shoot 18% or whatever it was?  I know some was good D on UConn's part, but jesus.   Had they shot 25% they would have won.

Worst final in foevah.  The 25% take might be right on.  Didn't watch the first half because I was on the road.  The second half looked like Butler was getting their shots but couldn't hit squat.  As many talking heads have said, they need to get this thing back to some more reasonable sized venues, as opposed to shooting against a back drop of 70,000 people.  Not saying that was the whole reason for poor shooting but it had to contribute to it.

What the fuck are you talking about?  You think they change the size of the court for larger venues?  Maybe the rim is smaller.  Do they use a larger diameter ball?

As bad as this game was it was not as bad as the insufferable analogies used by cBS's Jim Nantz at the end; "Uconn is top dog..." and "Uconn is Best in Show".

You are correct; it was 18% and 3 in 31, 2 pt shots.

To add my own analogy, I liked the "David and Goliath" build-up to the denouement but the outcome was anything but Biblical.

It was biblical.  The game fucked us all.

I'm sure David Frei and Rachel Maddow are feverishly working on their basketball analogies to use during at the next Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

That Alaskan Husky should be named Kemba, because she's a real walker.

You're so right, Rachel. The Terrier group is up next and I'm sure we'll see one from this group in the Final Four.

Ha Ha Ha David, you're really in the zone.

I ALMOST put 200.00 on Butler straight up and another 100.00 on the O/U (over 130) Monday afternoon in Vegas. Way glad I didn't.
