Iowa leads list of five teams that could land surprise spot in college football title game

Quote
Dave Curtis

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Ask Kirk Ferentz about his team's BCS and national championship chances and, well, cue the coachspeak.

Several of the Hawkeyes' offensive weapons: From left, Jewel Hampton, Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher.
"That's so far away," Iowa's 12th-year head coach said Friday.

Yet in another breath, he's raving about his fifth-year starting quarterback, his star-filled defensive line, and the deepest set of Hawkeyes running backs and receivers he's coached. Throw in a favorable schedule – Ohio State, Wisconsin and Penn State all come to Kinnick Stadium  — and Iowa leads Sporting News' list of teams that could surprisingly crash Glendale, Ariz., for the BCS championship game.

Here are four other sleepers capable of landing a spot in the title game Jan. 10:

Pittsburgh
Why it could happen: Its defensive line should dominate, the Big East isn't exactly the SEC and back Dion Lewis has Heisman potential. Don't forget the motivation from last year's 45-44 loss to Cincinnati with the Big East title on the line. "It will be with us until we do something to change it," tackle Jason Pinkston said.

Hurdles: Sept. 2 at Utah, Oct. 9 at Notre Dame, Dec. 4 at Cincinnati

Oregon State
Why it could happen: Brothers James and Jacquizz Rodgers are the Pac-10's top playmakers, veteran defensive tackle Stephen Paea is vastly underrated and the schedule features Pac-10 heavyweights USC and Oregon at home.

Hurdles: Sept. 4 vs. TCU (Arlington, Texas), Sept. 25 at Boise State, Dec. 4 vs. Oregon

Florida State
Why it could happen: The Seminoles have a Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback in Christian Ponder, the ACC's best offensive line and an ACC schedule missing Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech.

Hurdles: Sept. 11 at Oklahoma, Oct. 9 at Miami, Nov. 27 vs. Florida

Auburn
Why it could happen: A slew of returning starters, plus dual-threat quarterback Cam Newton, should make the Tigers the SEC's best after Alabama and Florida. An easy schedule helps—no Florida, with Arkansas, LSU and Georgia at home.

Hurdles: Oct. 16 vs. Arkansas, Nov. 26 at Alabama

Now a woman who'll kiss on a very first date

Is usually a hussy

And a woman who'll kiss on the second time out

Is anything but fussy

But a woman who'll wait 'till the third time around

Head in the clouds, feet on the ground

She's the girl he's glad he's found

She's his Shipoopi

Shipoopi, Shipoopi, Shipoopi

The girl who's hard to get

Shipoopi, Shipoopi, Shipoopi
