Just saw this
Justin Hokanson @JHokanson
Auburn announces that CB coach Phillip Lolley will move off the field and into an administrative role. Search for his replacement has begun.
I guess Lolley is out. I wonder who we will get?

So, Thigpen to LB's and bring in new DB coach?

So, Thigpen to LB's and bring in new DB coach?
Doubtful, since VanGorder is a LB coarch by trade. I am hearing they are looking at Willie Martinez to come in and coach the DBs.
-
Will it be Willie Martinez (http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/02/the_search_is_on_auburn_gene_c.html)?
-

I thought that too but moving Thig to LB's would give VanGorder the freedom to roam around each position. Who is the guy that was under him at the Falcons that was let go?

Alvin Reynolds. Another name being tossed around is Mike Gillhamer http://www.fightingillini.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/gillhamer_mike00.html (http://www.fightingillini.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/gillhamer_mike00.html).

I like this Gilhammer guy better than Martinez.
Too bad it's not up to me.

Of course, if this search goes like the last two have, Mike Ditka will probably be announced as the new DB coach in about 3 weeks.

Well, now that you have mentioned Mike Ditka, we know he will not be the new DB coach.

I heard Martinez as a name last night, but as Buzz said, I don't think anyone will have a clue until it's done.

My first thought on this was that CGC might have nudged Lolley towards the desk....kind of like a step towards retirement, and already has someone in mind.
Hoping anyway.
If not, we'll probably have a replacement right before the spring game.

My dad was asking me about this last week. Skreets local barber shop talk from the Stevenson folks was that he is going to a desk job and getting ready to retire in a few years. I didn't realize this until the other day and can't verify, but the move to Director of NFL Relations was his idea b/c his wife had cancer and it would keep him home more.
I don't know what happened to Lolley, but at one time I was convinced he was a damn good coach.
-
at one time I was convinced he was a damn good coach.
You were correct.
-
You were correct.
I know his HS teams used to whip ass on a regular basis and hit with bad intentions. In 2001, 02 and 03, we had some damn good DB's. I want to and do give him the credit for that.
Speaking of who might be a replacement, would anyone want Travaris Robinson to come home? Only one season under Tubs at TT, but he is a AU man?
-
I don't think anyone will have a clue until it's done.

How sad to have neiko thorpe as the last guy on your resume...
Actually Neiko would be on Thigs resume. Which concerns me. I haven't seen any improvement in our safeties in the past three years either. Will the new guy be a CB coach and Thig still coach the safeties? Waiting to see how it all shakes out.
EDIT: I guess Neiko would be on both of their resumes, since Neiko was a CB before moving to safety.

CB or safety - he was never in proper position anyway, so he might have been playing both at the same time...
-
Neiko got confused and thought he some kind of hybrid corner-safety-backer..in the nickel package.
-
Yall got this stuff figgered out. I'm sending your resumes to Chizik.

Guy called local radio show and said, "We already have a Big 12 caliber Defense for all the guys that are talking about Willie Martinez." I thought that was a pretty valid point.

On February 13th, 2012, Martinez was hired to coach the defensive backs for Auburn University. The move reunites him with Auburn's Defensive Coordinator Brian VanGorder. The two coached together for several years at the University of Georgia.
Meh. Was he fired at Oklahoma? My understanding is that he "resigned" much in the same way Ted Roof "resigned".
-
He and Van Gorder worked wonders at Georgia. And he supposedly is a great recruiter.
I like it.
-
Coach Martinez (DB Coach), Coach Thigpen (LB Coach).....BOOM!!!!

Stoops wanted to bring his brother in at OK, so Willie was given leave to pursue other options, which are apparently at Auburn if the no name skreets are correct...

WM = good/decent DB coach
WM = NOT a good DC

A good position coach doesn't always make a good coordinator, like THS said, him and the stache used to wreck shit at UGA. I will take him.
Coach Martinez (DB Coach), Coach Thigpen (LB Coach).....BOOM!!!!
Heard the same thing last night which makes me happy. It puts Thig back to what he has always coached and it give BVG the ability to be a roaming coordinator.

He and VanGorder worked well together at UGA, so hopefully they can find a good spot for Thigpen now.

I don't recall Oklahoma's secondary being forces of destruction. Especially not in that OK State game...
-
The good news is that a dawgie fan posted earlier on ITAT that Martinez was a proponent of coaching the DBs to play the receiver's eyes...not to look back for the ball. The learning curve won't be as difficult at least...
-

If what wench is saying is correct (and I think it is), he would have been already halfway out the door at the time of Bedlam. A good coach can look bad if the chemistry isn't there, morale is low, etc. We, as Auburn fans, should know that as good as anyone. His entire body of work is pretty decent. Notice, I didn't say excellent coach, I said good/decent. He is an upgrade over what we had. And BVG certainly is an improvement.
BVG/WM > Roof/Lolley
EDIT: I see where WM's secondary at Oklahoma was ranked #23 nationally in Pass D Eff. It was top 20 before the Okl State game. Auburn was 86th.
-
My opinion has pretty much been stated by others. Maybe the guy just feels better as a position coach who knows but I will say that he has done pretty well for himself in that position. You take that and add with the fact that Thig can go back to coaching the LB's and that the VG/Willie combo is together again, I certainly think we will see a VAST improvement in the Auburn D.
-
Are we allowed to use the term Coach Taco here?
-
Wait he has worked with Van Stache before? I thought coordinators weren't allowed to bring in their own people?
WTF is going down on the plains?

Except for 2009, when UGA was mediocre to teh suxxors on both sides of the ball, his defensive numbers were pretty solid. Even in 2009, they weren't Auburn/Roof like suckage.
-
Wasn't he a pretty good recruiter for UGA as well....that means something doesn't it? I mean I know recruiting isn't important and all...
-

He's not much for the X's and O's. Martinez will bring in the Jimmy's and Joe's.

Correct. Even as a DC he wasn't "Roof" bad. I remember his D's having a habit of giving up long plays in crucial times.

Son, when ya blitz - one side's band is gonna play. Understand son?
-
Dear lord, we pray that we may win this game today. We ask that you give us the strength and the courage to win our 2nd straight state championship. We ask lord that nobody on our side is seriously injured. We know that we are the best team. We ask that you allow us to win this game. The lord wants you to put your foot on their balls and believe in it, because that's what wins football games. Not jumping offsides like a bunch of wimps and faggots.
Alright lift your heads boys, prayers over. I talked to god. I'm thru talking to god, now I'm talking to you. You're gonna be out there in front of your families, the student body, every girl you ever had a hard on for is gonna be out there today but you will not be going to no sock-hop tonight boys, you will not get no honey on your stinger if you don't go out there and bust your ass. Because this is it. This is the big one. I want you to taste it. I want you to smell it son. There's winners and there's nothing else. I don't give a shit what those pinkos over in Russia say. You want to be a loser you go live in Russia. I'm not a loser. I'm a winner. I'm an American. Who wants to be John Wayne? Who wants to grab a root and hang on? Who wants to get a mean on? Get a mean on son. Let me see you get a mean on son. Now who wants it? I want to know, who wants this? Who wants to get a mean on? Who wants it? Let's go!
-
You kind of look like a combo Liberace meets Prince's mom. But it's groovy!
-
Son, when ya blitz - one side's band is gonna play. Understand son?
That you, Wayne?

Coach...Coach I think I broke my dick.

Rub some dirt on it and get back in there

Since you're not going to speak, you WILL rub my feet.

Who said that? Who the fuck said that? Who's the slimy little communist shit, twinkle-toed cocksucker down here who just signed his own death warrant? Nobody, huh? The fairy fucking godmother said it

From an OU sportswriter:

Happy about Mike Stoops? Then take just a minute and be sad about Willie Martinez
1/16/2012 7:51:00 PM
Lost in all the fervor over Mike Stoops’ return and Brent Venables (possible) departure from Oklahoma was the untimely exit of a good coach, a good recruiter and a good man.
Willie Martinez hit the road. Bob Stoops was careful to call it a resignation. Said Martinez would pursue other opportunities.
But semantics aside, Martinez is the first assistant coach Bob Stoops has fired in his 13 seasons steering the Sooners’ immense and frequently unwieldy vessel.
Clearly, Stoops has done it right. Until Martinez, everyone who left Norman did so for a head coaching job, a coordinator’s job or something in the NFL. That’s an extremely rare accomplishment in a business where four or five years is considered a lengthy tenure. Bob Stoops deserves major plaudits for that.
Stoops comes from a coaching family. Loyalty is his signature characteristic. Image — the image of doing things the right way, of treating his fellow coaches the right way — is paramount to him.
The 48-year-old Martinez didn’t deserve to become the first to fall under Stoops’ axe. Not by a long stretch. It’s just the way the lava cooled after Mike Stoops was fired at Arizona. There was nothing he could do about it. With two years tenure in Norman, he fit the last-hired, first-fired mold anyway. The heat that came down on his defensive backs this past season didn’t help.
I interviewed two new Sooners this weekend, a pair of defensive players, who told me they might not have chosen OU if it weren’t for Martinez.
And these are two guys the Sooners need in their immediate future: junior college cornerback Kass Everett and junior college defensive end Chaz Nelson. They both could start next season in positions of immediate need — positions where the Sooners’ two most reliable defenders held things down for two seasons.
Thank you, Willie. Now hit the road.
I’m not being critical of Bob Stoops’ employment practices. Not at all. I commend Stoops for his loyalty. Above all, this is a statement about the painful nature of the business.
It’s also a given that when Bob Stoops’ defense is struggling and his defensive guru brother is looking for a job, somebody’s got to go. Just the way it is.
For my part, I always enjoyed an opportunity to interview Martinez. A seriously strong handshake, a powerful, even booming voice, a laser gaze with a touch of compassion. And when I talked to him, I always left knowing more about defensive back techniques than I ever thought I could.
But I’ll let others, people who knew him well, paint a more complete picture.
Immediately after chatting with Nelson on Sunday night, I interviewed a couple of guys who have worked alongside Martinez the last two years and have gotten to know well both he and his family (Martinez and his wife Kim have a son and two daughters, teenagers/young adults).
The coaches I spoke to are sad to see him go. Although I will protect their identities, I can say they gave him an all-encompassing endorsement.
“We’re gonna miss Willie,” one coach said. “He’s a great guy. A really great guy. A good family man, too. That’s important, now. I mean, he’s a hard worker, a good football coach, a great recruiter, a great guy to have around. A really nice man. And listen, the guy knows his stuff.
“But he’ll be all right. He’ll land somewhere and he’ll do great, just like he did here.”

Surely you aren't saying Wayne Hall > John Wayne? But it is close.
Actually, Phil Bennett coined the phrase about the band playing but I know Bowden said it a lot as a coach. Did Wayne say that too? Maybe a 'dadgum' would have emphasized the Bowden-ness.

That would be about the only non X rated thing a Dye coach said during a game or practice.

Coach Martinez is another defensive coach with strong ties to the State of Georgia's defensive stud kats....as well as strong ties to the central regions of Florida.
