When did we exchange "funny" for "obnoxious" and call it a day?

Definitely has potential, but could take a serious turn to shit town as well.

I'm leery of Ferrell these days and I'm not very optimistic about the new Anchor Man.

That said, he surprised me in Everything Must Go.

Surprised me too.  As shitty as he is at comedy, I was amazed he was even shittier at drama.

I'm trying not to get sucked into the hype.  I liked Anchorman.  Anchorman 2 could very easily suck monkey balls.

They can't regurgitate the same jokes, but how can they avoid that?

Good way or bad way?

I saw this about a month ago and liked it more than I thought I would. It was a nice change of pace not seeing him act like a frat boy.

In a good way.  Your review was exactly how I felt about the performance.

Kind of the same way I felt about Jim Carey when he did Truman and The Majestic. They can both act decent when they want to.

I used to hate, hate, hate Jim Carrey.  I thought he was the most idiotic, lowest common denominator crap around.

His performance in Liar Liar swayed me.  There was plenty of slapstick and silliness, but his character was pretty earnest in scenes with his son.

I gave Carrey a second chance and grew to love the guy (with the exception of Ace Ventura sequels and The Mask). The Truman Show was a pretty fucking brilliant performance.

This X 3.7  Ace Ventura..I watched once.  That was all I could stomach.  But he's shown a ton of versatility since then.

The guy has a talent at acting, improve and impersonating - its just a matter of if he chooses to showcase it. Unfortunately most of the time he hasn't flexed his muscles. Like Wes said, when Carrey is good, he is great - Truman, Liar, Majestic. He can be extremely sincere and its believable. Ferrell could be heading down the same route although I don't think he is as versatile as JC. I did like him better in Everything Must Go. It wasn't Old School, Talladega Nights, Stepbrothers or even his cameo in Wedding Crashers. It was different for him. I was really wearing thin on the silly shit.

To add to that, some of his animated roles are damn fine work.  I grew up watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Carrey starred as the The Grinch in the remake.  They couldn't have cast anyone better to play that part.  And staying on the Christmas theme, Carrey did the voice overs for a lot of the characters in A Christmas Carol.

1) Will Ferrel cracks my shit up. Period. I didn't see Kicking And Screaming, so I can say I've enjoyed everything I've seen from him. The Other Guys is as underrated as comedies get. I remember a universal hatred of Anchorman when it was released. People didn't know how to take it. It was advertized as a straight comedy, and it played that way in parts, but it would jump back and forth to absurd. I loved it.

"I woke up on the floor of some Japanesse family's living room, and they would NOT stop screaming!"

"I woke up this morning and I shit a squirrel. The hell of it is, the damn thing's still alive. So I've got this shit covered squirrel down there in the office, and I don't know what to name it."

"I'm sorry, I think I ate your chocolate squirrel".

2) All this talk of Jim Carrey's acting chops and no mention of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? Blasphemy. His best film by a long shot. Another movie that I remember meeting similarly bad reviews that I loved was Cable Guy. People didn't know how to handle Carrey in a dark comedy role. An early Judd Appatow film, by the way.

"Oh my God! Oh my God! My twin brother has been shot! I think it was an Asian gang or something... There was this guy, he looked Asian... and he was speaking another language, I'm pretty sure it was... Aaaasian."

Great movie.  Just re-watched it.

Can't believe I overlooked it.  Love that movie.  Carrey was brilliant, but I'm a sucker for almost anything by Kaufmann.  Put Gondry on the camera and I'm hooked.

Criminally underrated.  Did not know that Apatow did that.

I meant to mention here that I did see Land of the Lost and can still say this. Universally hated, but I laughed consistently throughout.

I'm on par with most people of taste.  if you check the Rotten Tomatoes about the only place I'm way off is Eternal Shitstain, but I simply hated that pretentious piece of shit movie.  it was awful.
