Title: carl's jr.
Post by: chinook on January 30, 2009, 03:30:08 PM
not that carl's "jr.", jen...

anyhoo..keeping with my under-rated theme from a day or two ago...

the 6 dollar guacamole burger is very underrated.

now that i think about it, does carl's jr. exist in the southeast?  i believe hardees might be synonymous.

Here in the South, we have Hardees and no guacamole.

The Mickey D's Quarter Pounder w/cheese is still the staple of any proper diet.

Double Quarter Pounder actually.  I like sticking toothpicks in them, and then serving them as snacks at parties.

Best fast food fries?  All things being equal...fresh out of the grease and adequately salted...

McDonald's

McDonald's

Here's a question I've asked in my column before.

How come if you go into McDonalds, the fries are choked with salt despite the easy availability of salt shakers, but if you order at the drive-through you can't find the first crystal of salt on the fries?  And they don't give you any.

So you drive off, taste the first fry and it's dry and cardboardy.  You either eat them anyway or turn the fuck around and go inside, which defeats the purpose of the drive through anyway.

Why?  Can anybody answer why drive-through fries are salt-free 95% of the time?

Best fast food fries:  McDonalds

Best Fat Food Heart Attack Fries:  Krystals Chili Cheese Fries

Worst Fast Food Fries:  Burger King by a mile  (what the hell is that pasty aftertaste?)

Financial  issues. All you have to do is check your sack (pun intended) and ask for salt if they have not supplied it.
Used to most chains threw handfuls of salt, ketchup, napkins and maybe a peppermint into each order. There was a lot of waste and extra expense in doing this. So they quit doing it. It's still there if you request it.

But why do the ones in the restaurant not need any salt at all while the ones you get at the drive-through are salt free?

I've never had to salt a fry when dining in.

one theory...

the drive-thru employee must hear kiss softly playing while you place the order.

they think this person is an old fart and needs to watch his blood pressure.

Not usually lumped in with the fast food restaurants but Captain D's fries make me moist.  Especially when there's some "cracklins" scattered around from the fish batter.

By the way, one of the old Captain D's here in Dothan went up in flames last week.  I don't imagine it had anything to do with excessive grease build up.  Naaaa...

You prefer the Cap'n over Long John?

The thing I used to love was Hardee's chicken.  Don't know of any Hardees making the chicken any more.  So I have to settle for Jack's.

Jack's fries with the seasoned salt are pretty tasty.

Balanced meal?  Jack's regular hamburger, order of fries, two-piece chicken basket (all dark) with a biscuit.  Large Dr. Pepper and fried lemon pie.   That's good stuff there.

You must not have kids.

You don't drive through McDonalds when you have small children and there's a glistening Mini-Disneyland looming over the parking lot.  Climb right up in Mayor McCheese's ass and slide out the Grimace's colon after traversing the Hamburglar maze.  Oh yeah.

Jack's are softer.  They got that going for them.  Seasoning is about the same.

And yeah, I prefer the dark chicken meat.  Give me two thighs and a leg any day over a fat breast.  And a mess of livers, too, if you can find them.

Seriously?  I'm a liver afficionado.  I've always steered clear of fast-food livers, though and never tried KFC.

I've been known to drive into ghettos in unfamiliar southern cities looking for that converted house that says "Bertha Chickan Shax"  on a painted wooden sign above the door because I feel certain that the livers there will be exemplary.

Found a place in Tuscaloosa just off the projects on MLK Drive that was nothing more than a block building with a tin roof on it.  Served livers and collards.  They knew me by name there.

The good thing about KFC livers is that they are always fresh and made to order.  I don't think they sell a lot so when you order them they make them fresh.  They are made with the KFC secret recope breading and are delicious and hot out of the fryer.

There's a place in Aliceville (across from Jack's, actually) that serves good livers.  Will try to remember some other places I've been.  I never hesitate to get the gas station ones sitting under the heat lamps.  Always get a single just to try it.  Some places try to pass gizzards off as livers.  I'm not having that.

Boardude, 48 here.  Although, I've been told by many I don't look one day past 46.  You know, been workin' out and all that.  One daughter 18 starting at teh Planes in the fall and an 8 year old boy keeping me young as hell. has anyone ever had Raisin' Canes chicken fingers?  They are the best i have ever eaten - yes, even better than Guthries - with a side of crinkle cut fries and a large Dr Pepper - and they have Sonic ice too.  They have the orangey special sauce stuff but I am partial to their wonderful honey mustard.  How they got started and what the guy did to raise the money is a great story - you should check out his website.

Captain D's is a rare, guilty secret - fish and shrimp only tho - the fries and hushpuppies are nasty.

Mc D's has the best fries PERIOD.  And Kev, they must just hate you - I get salted fries at our drive thru.  As of this writing, my kids do not know that you can go inside a McDonald's for anything other than to pee - I told them the play area was just a decoration... so far, they are buying it.  Our McD's is next door to a Sonic, so I go thru McD's get two small hamburgers, no oinions, and a large fry, then pull in to Sonic for my Dr Pepper.  I hate the ice in a McD's drink - flat ice waters down your drink immediately.  Sonic ice is the ultimate.

We FINALLY got a Krystals on my side of Houston about two years ago - 5 regular Krystals no onions, no fries, no drink - it is also next door to a Sonic, and I would rather make two stops than have a nasty watered down Dr Pepper.

I miss the Hardee's Big Cookie... *sigh*

There is a place in Huntsville, TX - Mt Zion Missionary Church - that sells BBQ out of their kitchen.  Can I get an AMEN! and a HALALUJAH!! for the brothers and sisters who done brought more than one honky soul to the light.  Damn fine eating.  Not a lot of ambiance, but who gives a crap - the food is a sin itself.

Oh, and chinook - thanks for the clarification on the carl thing.

Now my exhausted self feels the gentle arms of Ambien easing me down in to relazation and sleep.  It turns my keyboard keys into marshmallows...black marshmallows with white leters on them... and to continue on like this usually gets me in trouble, so bon nuit, ma freres... you know, I love you guys, each and every one of you, except maybe the bammers, but BHM is growing on me, and rws keeps coming back for his licks, so you gotta respect that gumption.  And the pork rind boys have become almost like kin - backwoods redbneck inbred kin that you don't necessarily invite over to Sunday dinner with the pastor, but are more than welcome for a large outdoor crawfish boil where the other guests will eventually wind up as drunk as the Arkies are when arrive.  So yeah, I love y'all, you buncha miscreants. Even those of you who are displeased with the Wench at this time - it's all good... and so is this buzz... good night, good night, parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night til it be morrow... ;)

I am hoping that all the bad shit (greasy burgers, booze, beer, cigars, bbq...etc..etc..etc) that I consume will cause the enviro whacko's to have a massive coronary.

BTW, I do eat vegetables, potatoes, beans, all that good stuff, as a matter of fact tomorrow for lunch my wife will be cooking meatloaf, mashed potatoes, purple hull peas, and peach cobbler.  See, two veggies and some fruit.

Damn!  I think I'm inviting myself over to your house for supper!

At least it's home-cookin' instead of fast-food, fried, junk.

I would imagine that if I ever get to meet some of you X'ers one day that you will more than likely would be welcome anytime.

All kidding aside I would say that about every X'er that I've personally met; and I have absolutely no connection with Auburn other than my long-time friendship with Saniflush.  It reminds me of a quote from Pat Dye in a short book of letters and essays of Auburn folk...he wrote, "This is a book of Auburn stories, written by Auburn people.  If you are an Auburn person, you will love this book.  If you are not an Auburn person, this book just might make you wish that you were."

You prefer the Cap'n over Long John?

if i had a choice long john for sure. oregon has a long john silvers within a short drive but no captain d's in oregon.

i just noticed mcdonald's is now offering sweet tea in participating locations. sweet tea does not exist in dining locations on the west coast except my kitchen.

also, mc d's, at least in the pac nw, is giving starbuck's a run for their money by offering coffee drinks both hot and cold.

The Plantation House.  Mmm mmm...

When you been in my restaurant?

Some new owners took it over a few years ago.  They added a cajun flavor to the menu.  It's the best it's ever been.  They do a great job.

If you're ever there on Sunday, do the buffet.  Fried chicken, ham (or roast beef and gravy), mashed taters, corn, squash casserole, limas, field peas, a couple other vegetables I can't recall, rolls, cornbread and dessert.

Sweetest tea I've ever had.  I crave that tea.

I have had many people, even some bammies tell me that they love going to a game at Auburn.  They have said that they were treated better there than all the other places they go.  One guy told me he was amazed at how much good food and cold beer he was offered by strangers.  I told him that is pretty common and then told him to look up what Scott Van Pelt had to say about his gameday experience for the AU/UGA game.  He told me that was exactly what it was like and he couldn't have described it any better.

The best seasoned fries ever have to belong to Milo's
That's what I'm talking about! Milos is the best all around fast food joint in the Birmingham area. I'd straight up kick an old woman in the puss for a pill cup full of that brown sauce.

Ummm....I'm going to have to...uh....disagree with you there, Peter.

Milo's is the most overrated shit on the planet.  That sauce makes my dog vomit.  My dog thinks that ass is haute cuisine and she hates Milo's.

My family has had farm land down there, which is now exclusively hunting property, for 50+ years.  Its near the intersection of Benevola Rd and 14.

Perhaps I shoud be asking you what your doing in MY restaurant  :poke:

All kidding aside though, your right.  I've never had a bad buffet experience.  That place is the tits.

I'd go all Jim Fowler on that dog. Milo's sauce is great for fisting.

I know where that is.  Hell, man, I used to live fifteen minutes from the Plantation House.

I ate there when it sucked, even.

It's been through some owners, but the folks who have it now are awesome.

My wife's dad used to have land down on Lubub.  I never hunted, just not my thing, but I'd go spend weekends in an old .... uhh.... searching for proper term... African American house they'd propped back together down in the woods.

Small world.

Haha, yeah well a few years back we actually went on hiatus cause my old man got a hamburger steak with a side of food poisoning but yeah the most recent times I've stopped in its been great.  Probably can attribute that to new ownership like you said.

Lubub flows right through our property actually.  Divides it almost evenly in half matter of fact.

Haha...heard 'em called worse by the original proprietors.  Welcome to the deep south.

I bet you $100 I know who owned it when he got the hamburger steak poisoning.

I used to love that hamburger steak with the fries.  Then for a while they got really bad before the ones who owned it then sold out.  We went to church with them.  One night I got one that was freaking gray and smelled like somebody had rubbed it up and down a cat's ass.  I didn't eat any of it. My wife wouldn't let me send it back because she didn't want to offend the folks.  We quit eating there until they got out of the and let somebody else have it.

It had gone down pretty seriously at that time.  Bill and Polly brought it back and then the folks who own it now turned it into a quality place again.

If any of you do your own deep/pan frying, try a breading by House-Autry. They have a medium hot that gives a little spice that is great. I fried up some deer tenderloins and served it with gravy and the kids loved it. Makes fried pork chops seem like a taste of heaven. This breading is so light that it does not fry off. Give it a shot.

And you liver folks, God bless you. I just do not eat the insides. Had a guy cook up the deer heart fresh the other day. Everyone who had it said it was damn fine. I just couldn't do it.

Church's fried chicken always got me going. And Captain D's is soooo much better than LJS that it is not funny. My kids HATE LJS' shrimp and love CD's. But it may be that our LJS is coupled with a Taco Hell.

Any business that had Aunt Ester pimping for them has to be good.
