"Blinded By The Light"--Manfred Mann's Earth Band (Bruce Springsteen)
"Wild Horses"--The Sundays (Rolling Stones)
"Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)"--Stevie Ray Vaughan (Jimi Hendrix)
Feel free to add on, or not...

Faith No More's cover of the Commodore's "Easy" is the correct answer.
-
G-n-R's cover of "Sympathy for the Devil"
Train's cover of "Stay with Me"
Jimmy Buffett - "Stars Fell on Alabama"
-
Does it get any better than Tom Jones covering Prince?
I think not.
I think I'm gonna' dance now.
-
Dave Matthews cover of "All Along the Watchtower"
Shinedown's cover of Simple Man.
-
G-n-R's cover of "Sympathy for the Devil"
Never heard this. Can you send it to me?
The Jane's Addiction cover of this song is awesomeness.

Velcro Pygmies cover of ___________, originally sung by ___________.
Now take off those panties and bras and prepare to get a sucker shoved down your throat!

Should be in the mailbox.

Agree with DMB "all Along the Watchtower" and would add "long Black Veil" from them as well.

"Uncle Penn" - Original by Bill Monroe, covered by Ricky Skaggs
"Third Rate Romance, Low Rent Rendezvous" - Original by The Amazing Rhythm Aces, covered by Sammy Kershaw
"Whiskey in the Jar" - Original by Thin Lizzy, ass kicked by Metallica
Don't know if this counts, but
"Walk This Way" - Original by Aerosmith, covered by Run DMC/Aerosmith
Worst cover by someone I usually like,
"Uncle John's Band" - Grateful Dead, covered by Jimmy Buffet
-
Agree with DMB "all Along the Watchtower" and would add "long Black Veil" from them as well.
Dave Matthews Band is for fags. The only thing they should cover is their heads as they leave the stage.

On this we can agree.
Dave had his place back in the day, though. Playing "Satellite" on the guitar is a guaranteed panty dropper.

To those above, let me add:
Black Magic Woman (Santana from Fleetwood Mac)
Cocaine (Clapton from JJ Cale)
New York Groove (Ace Frehley/KISS from Hello)
Cum On Feel the Noise (Quiet Riot from Slade)
Me and Bobby McGee (Janis from Kris Kristofferson)
Hard to Handle (Black Crows from Otis Redding)
Hound Dog (Elvis from Big Momma T)
Proud Mary (Tina from CCR)
Pretty Woman (Van Halen from Orbison)
Hide Your Heart (KISS from Bonnie Tyler)
Twist and Shout (Beatles from The Top Notes)
God Gave Rock and Roll To You (KISS from Argent)
Lenny Kravitz did an interesting cover of Deuce (KISS), too, if you're a Kravitz fan.

FINALLY...some other people who don't think Dave Matthews is freakin' god. As a quasi-musician myself, I totally understand the talent and originality. But the music itself sux.
-
"Live and let Die" Original by McCartney and Wings kick ass one by G-n-R.

Aside from being an absolute pencil-dick, Dave Matthews is only a quasi-musician at best... I find the guy absolutely annoying.

Speak the truth brother.

I like him...good on the guitar, his band gets to do a lot of their own stuff in his songs, he writes his own songs, and he is a good lyracist. I liked him a lot better back in the day. He hasn't come out with anything remotely decent since "before these crowded streets. Busted Stuff was good, but the original Lily White Sessions was a lot better...
I like his old music though. We have hashed it out over on the other site before and if you don't lke his music that's fine...but to say he is just an average musician is dumb...
And yes, I play the guitar a little bit...very little...so I know what it takes to play some of his songs. You can't get through most of his songs with G, C, A, and D or power chords...which is a good thing...
-

You're right. Average gives the hack too much credit.
Mealy mouth fuck. Musician my ass.
BTW, I caught on to your meaning in the above defense of DMB (Dickless Musician Bastard). But you're not going to win any points even if he IS one.
-
he is a good lyracist.
No, he is not a good lyricist.
-
No, he is not a good lyricist.
But he IS racist. I get it.
-
big river (covered by hank williams jr.)
-
What song writer do you think is a good lyricist...you can't just say he's is not without giving a reason why he is, or an example of who a good one would be. Kaos, you like a band that plays loud power chords, wears spandex and wears make up....I think that's gay...different strokes and shit...
-
We've been over this KISS vs. DMB debate countless times, and let the record show that when given that choice, KISS 1,000 times over.
"Dave", as his fans affectionately call him as if they know him personally, has a mouth full of cocks at all times.
-
I have no problem with you thinking KISS 1000 times over...none at all. But to say that DMB is not a good band and that they are not good musicians is just stupid...
I don't like Opera or a lot of Broadway musicals, but to try and say that they people that do each are not musically gifted would be an equally stupid statement.
-

At best, he'd make a good lounge act in a cheesy, worn-out bar. That's it. That's probably what encourages people to buy his overrated crap.
-
Dreams I'll Never See - Molly Hatchet (from the Allman Brothers). Without a doubt the only instance in which the Allman Brothers were outdone.
Totally agree with Kaos' pick of Pretty Woman by Van Halen.
-
Leavin' on a Jet Plane - John Denver (original by Peter Paul & Mary) He wrote the song for them, but then he recorded it later...
WORST cover for me is Jimmy Buffet's Brown Eyed Girl from the original by the one and only Van Morrison.

I am a huge Jimmy Buffet fan, but he butchered another classic when he tried Southern Cross by CS&N. I felt sorry for him when I heard it.
-
Jimmy Buffet is just on nostalgia tour now - he cannot sing anymore - the voice is gone
-
I have always been a fan of Johnny Cash's version of 'Hurt,' originally done by Nine Inch Nails. The video makes the song to me:

That's not the only band I like. My musical taste is eclectic and runs the gamut from Prince to Kanye to McCartney to Molly Hatchet.
I also recognize that Paul and Gene aren't what you'd call top notch song writers and their vocal abilities leave much to be desired. But the total package works, there are some great songs buried in their catalog (true KISS fans really don't care all that much for RnR All Night), and if you understand what's going on, there's nothing gay about it. I admire the fact that Gene figured out a way to take a moderately talented band, find a marketing hook and make himself a millionaire many times over while he build a 35+ year career.
Dave Matthews, on the other hand, is a namby-pamby fag.
-
And back to what sparked the side-argument:
"All Along The Watchtower" (Bob Dylan) was best covered by Jimi Hendrix. Hands down. A billion other hippie bands have done it in the style of Dylan, and all of them suck. Including The Dave's.

"Don't You Forget About Me" - Billy Idol

Quite agree.
Although, anything by Dylan covered by anyone else -- whether that be NKOTB or William Hung or William Shatner -- would be an improvement on the original.
-
"I Shot the Sheriff" - original by Bob Marley remake by Eric Clapton

This is DMB version with Warren Haynes as a quest. Much better IMO. And this isn't even in the top 5 versions I have heard of it.
I am not denying that Hendrix did the song well...it is just not my style. I like him, but I would rather listen to the DMB version any day of the week.

That is the absolute gayest shit I have ever seen in my life. You like that homosexual queer fag's STYLE better than Hendrix?? What the hell is wrong with you? What color panties do you wear on Tuesday? Do you prefer tampons or pads during "that time"?
Wow. Speechless. That is just a godawful rendition of that song. Somebody should have come on stage and kicked that fucking Matthews fairy in the nuts when he started mewling a song that by rights should be burning up some amps. What a fucking homo.
I agree Chad, that is pretty good. t is just a preference of mine, but I like to hear more than drums, a bass guitar, and an electric quitar in my music...
Yes, you appear to prefer fags caterwauling in your "music". I cannot tell you how much his version of that song blows gigantic monkey nuts. Hendrix should crawl out of his grave, yank off a thigh bone and beat that cocksucker to death with it. It is one of the worst things I have ever heard. I can't get over how stunningly hideous that was. The fucking Pickle Surprise guy is better and less queer than that.

Metlallica's version of that song with awful.
Just thank God that Dave Matthews didn't butcher that one, too or we'd be "treated" to a video of him bellowing and wiggling his knee through the whole damn thing.
If I ever was held at gunpoint and forced to go to one of his concerts, I'd take the risk and the bullet, get me a shovel and start whacking that chump repeatedly in the face. My reaction to his garbage is almost as vitriolic as my response to anything crimson.
-
DMB. Loved in coffee shops from one end of Tuscaloosa to the other.

Metlallica's version of that song with awful.
Actually, I agree with you. It was "With awful". Despite the thread topic, I was just trying to recall famous songs that were covered. I hate that song no matter who does it...period.

I haven't been reading this thread, but just skimmed through it and I will have to agree with WE on the subject of Dave Matthews!! "Dave" (as chad put it) is what I call "musically talented", just like Hendrix, Santana, Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, etc... Just because you dont like the music does not mean that you can not appreciate his talent...and yes he is talented!!! I fucking hate oprea, but the people that can SING oprea, I think are very musically talented and I appreciate that!
I am not being a smart ass when I say this but, please someone explain to me how Dave Matthews is gay??? Is it because a majority of his following is female? Is it because he doesn't play Power chords and fucking blow fire out of his mouth (btw, i think is pretty bad ass and marketing genious)...I am just curious.
I like a lot of bands with Zeppelin probably being my favorite, I just don't understand why listening to "Dave" is gay.
-
Fuck me with a rusty chainsaw for not anticipating the suck into which this thread would devolve...but, there's no unringing that bell.
If you want to talk about shittastic covers, then talk about Jessica Simpson caterwauling her way through "Take My Breath Away", which did the near-impossible...took an otherwise garden-variety pop song and made it utterly unlistenable.
Also, Celine Dion should be forcefed about 832 cheeseburgers and then given a pan of Ex-lax brownies for covering "You Shook Me All Night Long"...horrendous.
-

Let's be careful there. Listing "Dave" with all of those names in the same paragraph is like equating Richard Simmons to Arnold Schwarzenegger...

I suppose that both are talented, if that makes you feel better...
I am not being a smart ass when I say this but, please someone explain to me how Dave Matthews is gay???
As they say, he was probably born that way, but I wouldn't want to speculate any further than that. It's probably a birth defect of some sort. Some would argue there's a gay gene.
I just don't understand why listening to "Dave" is gay.
We used to hear the same thing about Culture Club and Boy George, Elton John, George Michael, Village People, RuPaul... The gay community has adopted little "Dave" as another one of their favorite boy-toys. It doesn't make you a bad person, just a gay one!

I can't really argue with you on that one. Back in the day, when I may or may not have partook in certain recreational activities *cough* Marley just wasn't one of the ones I chilled out to. Mostly listened to Jimmie Hendrix, Greatful Dead, The Doors and the Animals.

Korn hasn't been the same since they lost one of their lead guitarists -Brian "Head" Welch. Then their bad ass drummer David Silveria left. Now it's just the three of them (Jonathan, Munky, and Fieldy) and instead of kicking ass like they used to, they rely on computerized bullshit beats and sounds to accompany a lot of their music.
I was a huge fan and always loved how their guitars sounded (a couple of octaves lower than any other band could produce) but they lost me after 1999's Issues. I still have bought every album up through See you on the other side hoping they would kick ass again, but they haven't. I haven't heard anything off of their newer "Untitled" album. I will say that I saw them in concert in 1998 and they absolutely brought the house down. Jonathan Davis even brought out the bagpipes and kilt and fucking got crazy on it (you could only know how it goes down if you heard it before) and to this day it's the best metal concert I've attended.

I'm thinking (now that I've researched this) of buying their last live DVD with the entire band together:

It should kick ass since all the original band members are still playing and there's lots of good old school songs they played.

While we're on the topic of metal, I thought of this cover that I've enjoyed-
"Land of Confusion" by Disturbed
Originally by Genesis...and the original is still my favorite MTV video of all time, with the puppets and all.
-
I was a huge fan and always loved how their guitars sounded (a couple of octaves lower than any other band could produce) but they lost me after 1999's Issues.
Issues was the last KoRn album I bought. I lost it. Didn't care.
I have a couple Mp3's from all their albums since that release, but they're not great.
Although, if you've never heard the studio-recorded mash up of Coming Undone with Lean Wit It Rock Wit It by Dem Franchise Boys, it's pretty kickass.

Have stolen purchased it yet. I've heard it on Project 9-6-1 quite a few times, however. It kicks some ass.

Great pick. Always have liked STP's version better. Something about the way they bend the acoustic guitar strings during the song. And the tune reminds me of a mushroom filled unicorn world that Scott Weiland lives in 28 days out of each month.

Thanks for posting that statement. I couldn't even begin to explain it that way, but that makes perfect sense.

There are few. Check the Under the Covers I & II by Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs; covered well but lacking the raw sound of the originals.
Robbie Robertson's Golden Arrow over Rod Stewart is a prime example.
Any original over Rod Stewart, except the two or three of his own.
Stewart made a living off covers.

Kind of reminded me of when Korn (rock/alt) covered Word Up (Cameo - pop)....and their version was much better than the original as well. Hell that one is probably somewhere in this thread already. Couldn't remember if it had been mentioned previously. But it be good.

Anybody who was around Auburn in the mid 90's knows that the best cover of Word Up was by Phoenix.
