Title: No Craft Beer Thread?
Post by: wesfau2 on October 08, 2015, 07:22:26 PM
Color me shocked that my in-depth, 10-second search found no such thread.

Obviously these small shops are my preferred beer makers.

Found one today that will fucking wreck you:  Green Flash's Green Bullet.

It's a triple IPA (you read that correctly, 10.1% ABV 100+ IBU....only available Sep-Dec so get on it).

These guys said "Fuck the American hop shortage/prices" and went with all New Zealand hops.  The result is a citrusy, tropical fruit (mango) front end, a nice bitter back end and none of the alcohol wallop of a DIPA.  So smooth you will not realize how quickly you're drinking it.

Get some.  Now.  It's fucking delicious.

Okay so, since ur boy is coming down...is this a brew you pick up retail or is there a particular establishment pouring it up?

The Green Flash website tells me that Modica Market stocks this delicious product.

If they're out, you'll have to trek into Sandestin/Destin to visit Chan's or Beach Liquors.

Also, World of Beer (spit) at the Commons is pouring it on draft.  If you're willing to come to town, I'll swallow my disdain (teed that one up for you editing miscreants) for this establishment and join you there for a few.

Yes it is.  And I sought out and hooked up with the male who started this thread last Friday.  Took his recommendation and picked up a carton of 4.  This is the commercial description:

"A full-bodied Triple IPA, Green Bullet combines New Zealand grown Pacific Gem and Green Bullet hops. Significant pine and citrus hoppiness hit the palate at first sip, accentuated by tropical notes of mango and pineapple, ending with a moderately aggressive, bitter finish."

I'm not sophisticated enough to put those words together.  I would have said great flavor with hints of fruit, but the finish was a little bitter for my taste.  But here's the thing.  At 10.5%, the bitterness goes away very quickly.

New Belgium Fat Tire is a very smooth amber ale.  Solid choice.

Back 40 has a coffee stout called Trade Day.

Samuel Smith's nut brown ale, for those brown ale peeps.

There's a brewery here in Dothan that's really taken off in the few short years it's been open.  Folklore Brewery and Meadery.  They've currently got 6 different high gravity beers.  Very popular in the Wiregrass area.  One really good Pale Ale.

interesting a wheat beer is "very hoppy" much less "hoppy"

I had been hitting the Sweetwater 420's and IPA's recently and decided to switch it up.  Tried Samuel Adams Crystal Pale Ale and was very pleasantly surprised.  A good bit lighter and not nearly as full flavored or bold as the Sweetwaters.  Definite hint of citrus, possibly lemon. I believe I'll have to pour one up this evening.

Temps in upper 70's right now, throwing some deer jalapeno sausage on the grill and having a few of these.

Picked up a sixer of Ballast Point's Pineapple Sculpin.

Love the original....love love the Grapefruit...sorely disappointed in the Pineapple.

The smell is amazing and sets you up for a big letdown in the taste.  Not bad...an average IPA, but the fruit flavor is flat and a little off-putting.

Maybe I expected too much based on the prior iterations of this brew, but I wouldn't waste the time/effort/money to grab this.  $16.49 a six is robbery on this one.

Enjoying a Murphy's Stout on a Friday. Minus the burnt flavor of a Guiness this is still one of the best and I can only imagine what the real deal is like on tap. And for the authentic black and tan I have it on good authority that it's a Harp Lager and a Murphy's just so you know. Now kiss my ass.

One of my favs as an all around brew is Anchor Steam. It is top flight and the best bet to be a hit at any gathering among those that are accustomed to the mega brewed swill. It's a 5.6 with all the qualities of a solid beer for leisure or thirst and a goto at jmar's.

The UK are extremely heavy on roasted malt in their beers. Especially Scotland. Suck it up buttercup.

FYI - Black and Tan is an American invention. Just like how we "celebrate" st Patrick's day by getting drunk, listening to drop kick murphys, wearing green and acting like idiots.

Not really "craft" I don't think but found this one at teh Kroger in Auburn....

Tap Room 21 - Copper.

I will be going back to this well again. Super good. I'm big on a rich, Amber lager and this one hits the spot. Smooth as hell. Great taste. Nothing fancy just good. Not water but not heavy either. Reminded me a little of a few of the German lagers like st Pauli girl but also like Smithwicks on the red/Amber side.

I can't ever recall celebrating St. Patty's and I'm 4/10's Irish. And I like the burnt malt. Just not all of the time. I got my b&t info from a native of Edinburgh. Maybe he was just yanking my chain.

Jumbo must have deleted his post as I recall that he liked Good People's Bearded Lady which is what I'm currently drinking alternately with a Lazy Magnolia So. Pecan Nut Brown while smoking a butt. Both pretty good beers although Bearded Lady has been discontinued due to the unavailability of the hops...something about a mega brewery buying them all up.

Just happy we have unrestricted choices in styles. My favorite IPA is Bell's Two Hearted Ale. And I enjoy the Double IPA's too although I'm of the opinion that it ceases to be beer once the alcohol is so prevalent.

Other dislikes:
Thin beers and adjunct beers.
Our forefather's knew what sugars and fruit worked for each region. The hops, types of malt and yeast strains were limited. And if ie. cranberries were so fucking great (beyond being a good antioxidant) they would have fermented and drank a truckload of it.
The best way to counteract these defects is to try them on draft...far better results and enjoyment. Abita Purple Haze is a nothing beer from a bottle but on draft it's quite refreshing. Same goes for numerous others.

GH seems to be coming up with some good finds and I'm taking notes. That said...I will take a tall shot of most anything on tap before I order a pint. Cheers!

Just polished 2 Sweetwater IPA's while taking an hour to catch some rays and tan the flab.

Got a 5 lb. beef tenderloin chilling in a bourbon and brown sugar marinade.  After a 7 hour soak, it'll go on the Big Green Egg while Scalloped Parmesan New Potatoes bake in the oven.  There may be another IPA or 3 consumed during cooking.

Catawba Brewing company's Brown Bear is a solid choice for a brown ale.  Also went to Cheaha Brewing in Anniston Friday night and had their Nutbrown ale.  I likes my browns.

I'm a fan of Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale for a change up every now and then.  Newcastle is my standard.  Not very adventurous I know, but I've always loved Newcastle.

I'm sure I've already posted this but I'm too lazy to go back.
Samuel Smith Nut Brown
Cheaha Brewing challenge nut brown
Good People Brown Ale
Back 40 truck stop honey
Catawba Brewing brown bear
Cigar City Maduro brown ale
Founders Sumatra Mountain Brown
All of those are SOLID brown ales if you're looking to mix it up a little.

Very few have the distinct nutty flavors as Samuel Smith.  Just bought a carton of "Hopslam Ale Double IPA".  Know nothing about it other than it's damn expensive and my buddy who owns the Lick Her store told me they make one batch a year and he can't keep it on the shelf when he gets it.  Waiting for the proper moment to pour one up.  Anyone ever socialized with a Hopslam?

Forgive the quote function bitch slapping of Snags in the post above.  I blame the new site. Even though I love it.  Just went on Beer Advocate for a review of Hopslam.  Mostly mid to high 4's out of 5 and this review below gave me a serious heads up on what to look for.  I never seem to gleen the same sensations as these folks do, but I have to admit, when I read it, I want to take that first good pull and see if the description matches up.  BTW, I have a feeling (If the review is spot on)that Wes would dig this brew. Random review below:

I’ve drank this beer numerous times, but it’s not until I try a fresh can from across the country that I feel the need to rate this beer. Here is my best shot.
Look: pours smooth amber orange with a nice head yet still quite clear. Little to no Haze.
Smell: Pungent smell of citrus, pine, earthy, and resinous hops in what seems to be mostly flavor. Not the sharp clean scent of a dry hop, but rather a plethera of hops covering a strong honey malt smell.
Taste: Strong, bitter, and in your face. To those that may feel this is a turn off, trust me, this is not. This is a high gravity beer, so expecting anything “light and breezy” would just be a novice mistake. This beer has been hopped in a wild and Cluster f***ed of a manner to balance the dry honey base and full carmel malty body.
Feel: In all, the beer lathers the palate with warm, carmely honey notes, and yet the string of a complex bitterness. The high abv definitely lingers, but for a beer this big that is a moot point.

Overall, definitely my favorite beer from Bell’s. Coming from Michigan, I am uber critical of beers, but I am glad to see that the high demand from across the country has still proven to the success of this beauty!

The Hopslam is ok...but (and I can't believe I'm saying this) it's over-hopped.  For a Bell's IPA, get the Double-Hearted.

IPAs are an acquired taste in many cases. If youre not a craft beer guy they can come across very badly on first taste. India Pale Ales have a very strong floral taste and high alcohol content.

The craft beer revolution has brought lots of IPAs into the public eye.

My go to lately has been Lagunitas IPA. Very smooth pale ale with just the right bitters.

I don't want to know what bar is serving #1.

Sounds like the Dell Ranch in Smiths Station.

Just as an aside. If any of you are vexed by brown ales particularly Samuel Smith's Nut Brown, you might want to consume it before imbibing the Taddy Porter. JMO but there's a slight sour present that splits a traditional stout and a really good brown ale.
"Taddy" fits the bill hands down.
Check it!

My LITE tastes the same as it did in college. And Kroger has it for $10 a 12 pack of tall boys.

But I must say, for a fancy shmancy beer like yours, that ain't a bad price for the bigguns.

When in PCB, I like to go to Patches pub(east end of Thomas) and get a nice pizza and drink $2 tall boy LITES. Thats a fair price.
On Wednesdays, we old people hit up Beef O'Brady's for some cheap wings and $6 pitchers of Yuengling. See. I can get fancy too.

I ain't snooty pard.
I buy a case of Bud Lite or Moosehead or a twelve of Yuengling when I pick up my porter, pilsner or stout just so I don't have to go back again for a week or so. Also have to buy a couple of cases of water so I won't be knotted up with leg cramps during my sleep.
Old fucker's have to irrigate.

Monday Night Slap Fight.  Any reviews on this IPA?

Since I was driving, I had cut myself off after a couple the other night at a restaurant.  We had a table full, and one of the guys had ordered this.  I asked him about it, and he offered a pull.  All I could say was, Holy shit that's good.

I'm trying to track some down locally in a 6'er.  Anyone had a Slap Fight?

Back when I was in kindergarten, I used to be the Slap Fight king.  I know you are, but what am I?   Good times!
