Title: Unofficial Draft Day thread...
Post by: chinook on May 08, 2014, 02:44:43 PM
brought to you by :hop:

I'm thinking Ford goes in the 1st.

Quote
Dee Ford is not backing down.

The flashy defensive end out of Auburn will enjoy his night with friends and family, and his expectation of a first-round selection in the NFL Draft. Tonight, Ford believes, serves as a brief coronation after impressing scouts in the offseason at the Senior Bowl and in workouts.

"Our family has been through a lot and it's just another opportunity to excel for my family," Ford said. "It means a lot for me, but it's just clarification to get to work for me. It's not a time for me to celebrate. It's a time for me to get more motivated. I've got more to achieve."

Whether Ford, who co-led the SEC in sacks last season, is picked late in the first round remains to be seen. He's on the fringe in many mock drafts, and many still believe he will be picked in the second round on Day 2.

"I've been hearing about first round. I never hear anything about second round," Ford said. "Maybe that's just all I hear."

Ford utilizes his strength and speed to maneuver around tackles, but there are questions about his durability and consistency defending the run. Some scouts see him as a linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, but after the NFL Combine in February several teams expressed interest in keeping him at end.

"He's versatile enough to fit at either," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said on the eve of the draft. "He's so explosive. He was one of the best pass rushers in our league, if not our best, so he's got a chance to be a really good player at the next level. He's a tough guy."

The 6-foot-2, 252-pound Ford also likes to talk. South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney might be the best prospect in the draft, but Ford believes he's a better pass rusher than Clowney.

"You can see these things on film. Go watch the film," Ford said at the NFL Combine. "It's a lot of intangibles you need to have to be a great player, you can't just look at the fact he's a physical specimen. I think the NFL should have learned about that by now."

Ford has not backed down from his comments, either. He strengthened his case with a strong performance at Auburn's pro day after he was scratched from workouts at the combine when doctors discovered an issue stemming from a back surgery he had in 2011. The issue was not serious.

Ford visited the Houston Texans, who examined his back, after the combine. He has since worked out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons. The New Orleans Saints and Cincinnati Bengals have also expressed strong interest in possibly drafting him.

"The biggest thing is the off-the-field intangibles that they love the most," Ford said. "All the crap I talk is actually true, you know? All teams are really loving me and I've just moved that much higher on their board. Things are looking lovely, man."

Quote
Jake Holland has no illusions about his place in the NFL Draft process.

The former Auburn linebacker, a three-year starter at middle linebacker, knows he's not likely auditioning to hear his name called in May, knows it's a long-shot for him to be drafted.

All Holland wants is a shot.

"As of right now, I don't see myself getting drafted," Holland said. "It's working to see, after the draft, how early can a team call me and say, hey, we want you to come work out with us."

Holland, who first got a chance to showcase his skills at the College All-Star Bowl in Greenville, S.C. in mid-January, headed into Auburn's Pro Day on Tuesday knowing he had a lot to prove in terms of athleticism.

"This, right here, was really my biggest interview," Holland said. "I talked to a couple of guys, they wanted to see what my times were. I felt like I put up some pretty good numbers right now."

Holland, a Pelham native, measured in at a shade over 6 feet and 237 pounds, turned in a 4.70-second  40-yard dash, a time that would have tied him for third at the NFL Combine among inside linebackers with California's Khairi Fortt.

On the bench press, Holland did 20 repetitions, and along with his vertical jump and broad jump, the other two numbers released by Auburn -- the school didn't release shuttle times -- that figure placed him somewhere in the middle of the pack.

So far, Holland feels like he's made a good impression, leading his team in tackles at the College All-Star Bowl and proving that he can play either inside linebacker or outside linebacker in a 4-3 defense. At the College All-Star Bowl, Holland spoke to a couple of teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers, in preliminary meetings, although he said he hasn't received a formal interview yet.

Holland's not a pure pass rusher, so his best fit in a 3-4 would be on the inside after making 46 tackles as a senior in Auburn's 4-2-5.

"Versatility is a benefit to me," Holland said. "In the All-Star Game I played in, I played a little Will linebacker, just to show that I can play both, and I was pretty productive out there, too."

Holland has thought about the possibility that his time in football might be coming to a close. He's still taking classes in building science, the field he'll pursue whenever his football days are over.

Before that happens, though, Holland plans to pursue an NFL opportunity with everything he's got.

"As of right now, my focus is to get to the NFL," Holland said.

If he drops below 2, I'll be shocked. Still holding out the glimmer of hope Houston takes him.

I'm thinking Ford goes in the 1st.
The Saints are going to take Ford 27th if the Bengals don't take him one pick earlier.

That's what people in South Alabama who know AJ are predicting.

It would surprise me if he goes between the 2nd and 3rd pick. He's too big a boy to fit in there.

Big night for Auburn football.

Greg Robinson goes 2nd.

Dee Ford goes 23rd.

The magic of Malzahn's first year is still taking effect.  This time last year, we were thinking 3-4 years until Auburn was rebuilt.  Now we have two first round draft picks to go with out SEC rings and BCSCG appearance.

Kind of a mixed bag of responses.
The Rams boards I have been watching are all pretty happy about getting Greg.
The KS boards seem to all be scratching their heads on the selection of Dee.
I am not a pro ball aficionado so I am not sure if their head scratching is justified however after watching their playoff game last year against the Colts, it seems that with another decent pass rusher they would have won going away.

They have two pass rushers but both were hurt that game. Dee is going to play OLB for them. I'm happy for him.

Rams made out like bandits last night. Top OL and DL in draft.

The best part is that after two first rounders with at least three more all but certain to be drafted to go, we will not be hurting a bit next year by losing them.

Also, it was the first time since 2008 that Alabama did not produce a Top 10 pick.

However, they did also become the first team in history to have at least 2 first rounders for five consecutive years.

I don't understand all of you haters out there. JFF is not over-hyped. He can play the game. Sure he has a big ego, but a lot of NFL QBs have big egos. It is almost a necessity for that position.

HE will probably play before many of the other QBs drafted. And unlike one unnamed crimpsun turd, JFF will actually see the field during his career.

How long or good will that career be? Who knows. All I know is every turd fan is all over his ass because he is better than the aj. And some of you sound about as butthurt. What up with that?

I thought he was overrated when they were talking about him being a top 5 pick.

I think Clowney as #1 will actually prove to be the most overrated pick of this draft.

The Clowney pick was de ja vous all over again for Houston.  But, it's hard to pass up a freak athlete like that and hope it doesn't burn you.  The guy can make incredible plays but I think you can go right at him with plenty of success.

As for JFF, agreed.  Later in the first round was where he should have gone IMO.  I think the guy can ball and if he'll do what murderer...err, Ray Lewis...said and learn to slide when he gets out of the pocket, he might be pretty good at the next level.

bammer sports talk this morning was saying that the Patriots were going to trade with the Texans and draft aj with the first pick of the second round.  Said that billichek (sp?) had talked to mini him and is 100% sold on aj being able to replace Brady when that time comes.  Guess we'll see, but if I were the Pats I'd keep freakishly tall Mallet cat and let aj go try out as a walk on somewhere else.

Clowney is one YouTube video of decleating a weak ass Michigan player. That's it. It carried him to #1 overall in the draft. He spent most of last season injured.

I don't think he's total human garbage, but I would have taken Dee all day before Clowney. Wouldn't have taken Clowney until very late in the 1st at best.

There is nothing about AJ's game that says he can play in the NFL. It is a lot easier to look good when you are surrounded by superior athletes. When all you have to do is heave the ball to your freak WR's, it looks easy.

What sucks is that I kinda like the Texans and they were not in need of another defensive end.  That position is not the reason they sucked like the Astro's last year.

See, I hope this happens because the Texans are fucking DESPERATE for a QB and drafting AJ would make me want to puke.

Our local sports guy is the first guy I have ever listened to who absolutely says exactly what he thinks without giving a good gorram about courting the local powers that be.  (Over the past three years he has specifically referred to the Astros and their owner as a trainwreck, a waste of money, terrible, not worth watching, badly managed and on and on... I love this guy)

ANYWAY, he commented last night that although Clowney was the "popular" choice to blow the first overall draft pick on, the Texans didn't help themselves because we are so fucked at the QB spot.

He also went on to talk about the Cowgirls and snickered that "the Cowboys are desperate for defense so OF COURSE it makes sense in the Cowboys organization to draft an offensive lineman!!"  He and the other anchormen had a major chuckle over that.

Like I said - LOVE this guy.

Quote

JFF had freakish WR's all over the field as well.  I don't particularly find that his accuracy is amazing.  He has the ability to do some amazing things with his feet, but at 6' 200lbs that shit doesn't last long against NFL type talent.  NFL is a totally different ball game, it is timing more than anything else.  You have to make split second decisions.  I don't see him having the ability to do that.

Is he an amazing college football player... yes.  So was Ryan Leaf. So was Darren McFadden. So was Tim Tebow.  I don't see it, I think what makes him amazing... speed and the ability to make things happen won't be there in the pros.

I also hate it when announcers ooh and aah continuously over a single player.  Not his fault but I don't like it.

I also think he is an smug asshole, so there is that.

Severely OVER -hyped!!!

Hater.  Oh yes you are.

The hype on JFF at the college level was all deserved.  He may be a polarizing figure but what the guy did in his short career was off the charts.  He was a human highlight reel.  But admittedly, he had just as many detractors as the ones pimping him when it came to evaluating his NFL stock.  There were a ton of people saying he's too small.  No mechanics.  His style will never fly at the next level.  He's got an attitude etc.

I don't know if he'll make it or not.  I hope he does because he's fun to watch. Now AJ?  I hope he gets the STD's and his dick rots off.

He also went on to talk about the Cowgirls and snickered that "the Cowboys are desperate for defense so OF COURSE it makes sense in the Cowboys organization to draft an offensive lineman!!"  He and the other anchormen had a major chuckle over that.

Don't bring sanity to the haters. I bet he sucks as bad as that no talent Russel Wilson does in the NFL. Damn short QBs who use their feet to buy time. Damn them...

JFF reminds me a lot of Jim McMahon back in the early 80s; we'll see what he can do without having that damn freak of a receiver he lobbed to ball at in college. That dude saved his ass more than anything I've ever seen before in the game.

It'll be interesting to see what he can do in Cleveland.

I agree he should have come back...for his degree.  If he already has it, he should definitely have gone.  He wasn't going to accomplish much more with another year.

No running back is going in the 1st round unless it's an Adrian Peterson potential.  There are too many prospects in the later rounds that are serviceable NFL backs.

That's what you get for being a douchebag.  He was part of the problem in the locker room this past season.  He will point the finger at everyone else, but some of his interviews that I have watched over the past few months convinced me otherwise.

Yeah don't blow off the Senior Bowl because you don't like being called a game manager. Jimmy Garrappolo says thanks though.

And every Texan fan just broke out in a cold sweat. Unless the rumors are true and they really are going to try and develop Case Keenum into an NFL level QB.

I hope our defense can score lots of points.

No kidding.  That guy made some money at the Senior Bowl.  But really, I'm not so sure that the results would have been much different had McCarron played.  Maybe I'm missing something.  Aaron Murray and Tajh Boyd are still on the board. Not sure why.  What I do know is that if McCarron retains his douchie attitude, he's going to fall flat on his face in the NFL.

They are supposedly talking with the Pats on trading Ryan Mallett.  Which would make sense with the Pats taking Garoppolo in the second round.

So far:

Greg Robinson went 2nd overall. Exactly where he was projected.

Dee Ford went 23rd overall. Slightly earlier than projected.

Tre Mason went 75th overall in the 3rd round. He was projected to go late in the 2nd, early in the 3rd. Ended up going almost a full round later than expected.

Chris Davis was projected to go in the 4th Round. Still on the board with only about 20 or so picks to go. Disappointing.

Jay Prosch exceeded expectations significantly. Was barely projected to make the draft. Most thought he wouldn't, but if he did it would be at the very end. He went pretty early in the 5th at 211 overall.

Parkey & Clark were thought to possibly go before it's all said & done, although they were longshots, but that's looking unlikely as well.

Some notables to end the draft:

AJ drafted to some shit team in a late round.  Will now be on track to take over Jay Barker's spot on the Opening Drive in the next five years.  He'll cohost with Greg McWhateverFuckHisDoucheyName

Zach "Here's Your Future, Jacob Coker" goes in the 6th to the Texans.

Aaron Murray gets snagged by the Chiefs.

Michael Sam goes to the Rams and he made sure everyone knows he's still gay by making out with his white boyfriend.

Some thoughts:

- My Saints did okay in the draft.  Picking up Brandin Cooks was a huge get and worth the trade.  Jean-Baptiste and Fortt are good pickups but I doubt anyone knows who they are in five years.  I'm pissed we drafted Sunseri.  I'm very happy we picked up Powell.  Ronald Powell was the #1 high school prospect a few years ago and still has the physical tools to be a dominant player even in the NFL.  He was a huge get for a 6th round draft pick as if he doesn't get his shit together, it won't hurt the checkbook.

- The Cleveland Browns are the Mississippi State Bulldogs of the NFL.  You know how Dan Mullen was the hot coach ready to take Miss State to new heights and suddenly Cam Newton goes to Auburn, Hugh Freeze gets hired at Ole Miss, and Miss State despite being vastly improved from the Croom days still has to deal with 5-6 loss seasons?  Yeah that's the Cleveland Browns.

- As much as I dislike CJ Moseley for his commitment switch and the fact that he played for Alabama, I think he'll very soon be an NFL star.  Incredible football player.

- The Buffalo Bills had a terrible LT draft in the 2nd round and a good one in the 7th.  I think Cyrus Koundjiro has bust written all over him.  He was burned by speed rushers and it's only going to get worse in the NFL for him.  But then they got Seantrel Henderson in the 7th.  Now, Seantrel is an idiot with tons of off the field issues, but he has the body and ability to be a starting LT for a long, long time.  Great pickup for a risk in the 7th round.

- I'm not a fan of Kelvin Benjamin going to the Panthers.  I honestly thought they Panthers would trade up in this draft to get one of the big time receivers on the board.  They could have also traded up to snag a top offensive linemen.  Instead, they waited until their pick to choose a guy that had one good year of college football.

My Draft Notes:

1 - I was on the fence with Manziel, but after being force-fed his ugly mug for three and a half hours on the first night of the draft, after hearing the constant talk about him on the TV and radio since Thursday and after watching that assclown come out waving the money sign when every other single player who walked to the podium that night did so without showing his ass?  I hope he's a spectacular, craptastic fail.  I hope he ends up on the same Cleveland Brown trash heap that claimed so many other quarterbacks in the last 20 years. I will be actively hoping he gets his dook pushed in.

2 - I didn't know 3/4 of the people who were drafted and didn't much care.

3 - When the Panthers drafted that jerkoff from FSU, I said that I hoped Cam never threw him a single ball. But then I realized it wasn't his fault he played on the same team coached by that douchebag Fisher and the crab-stealing imbecile.  I used to sort of like FSU, but the behavior of Fisher and Raper after that game ruined the 'Noles for me.  They can all die in a fire.

4 - The Texans crapped the bed.  Clowney has the tools but his motivation and work ethic is crap.  I think they had to take him because nobody wanted the first pick.  For every great play he made over the last two years, he took four other plays off and didn't do squat. I wouldn't have drafted him.

5 - Dallas. Really?  I hate the Cowboys but their defense was spectacularly bad last year.  So they draft an overrated offensive lineman -- who was a significant reach for the first round. Their next pick was an undersized end from Boise. They scrapped together a bunch of no-name late round defensive picks, but nothing that is going to improve that team right away.  Jerry Jones has become Al Davis.  Or worse.

6 - Raiders drafted well I thought.  Haven't been relevant in a long time and I miss the Raiders being good.

7- Back to the Panthers. I don't think they improved themselves much either.  I wasn't that impressed with Kofi Anan Ealy or whatever his name was from Mush-oori.  They didn't get a receiver that could stretch the field. And yeah, they have a "stable" of backs but all are on the downswing.  The offensive line didn't get any better despite there being (apparently) 481 offensive linemen available.  There's nobody there to take the pressure off Cam and he's saddled with the most pathetic excuse for an offensive coordinator in the NFL.  Shula is abysmal.  When this team underperforms next year (and I firmly believe it will) much of the frustration is going to be wrongly directed at Cam.  He doesn't need much, but he's got nothing to work with and it's going to be rough for him.

Zach "Here's Your Future, Jacob Coker" goes in the 6th to the Texans.

Aaron Murray gets snagged by the Chiefs.

Mettenberger went to the Titans.

And rebuilt knee or not, I was wishing for Murray. The kid is a gamer. He is five times the QB McTatts thinks he is.

I am stoked like crazy that we got Prosch. Best pick of their draft if you ask me. Glad to have the AU connection too, since Ben left.

I know nothing about Savage - he started at Rutgers, went to Arizona then wound up at Pitt. From teh innerwebs:

Quote
His play was erratic no matter where he went, but Savage has a lot of fans in the coaching and scouting community for his big arm and traditional NFL skills. Greg Schiano, his former coach at Rutgers, believes that Savage has the skill set to be a star at the next level.

Guess anything is better than what we have now.

"Only 4" will be used against us but it's hard to talk down the #2 overall pick and two first round picks. That's the only reason I pay attention to the draft. To see how it can influence recruiting.

There should be a few more after this next season.
