Title: Da Braves
Post by: Thrilla on April 07, 2010, 02:55:29 PM
Who thinks they have a shot this year to bring it home for the best manager in MLB's last season?

I was at the season opener and despite Derek Lowe sucking and my vision being blurred from too many beers, the bats looked good.  Everyone was chanting "Let's go Heyward" before the young phenom hit it 440 ft to right center field during his first MLB at bat.  That moment ranks in my top 5 most exciting moments ever during a Braves game...the crowd went wild...just can't imagine how it must feel at 20 years of age and doing that.  Plus all the hype leading up to that at bat...it was simply awesome.

All around, I think that they may have an honest improvement offensively speaking.  Pitching is what I worry about...you can count on Hanson and Jurrjens to bring the pain, but Hudson, Lowe, and that Japanese guy don't give me a very warm and fuzzy feeling.

At any rate, the glass is half full at this point.  16-5 is a damn fine score for a season opener.  We'll check 'em out again at 7:10 Eastern tonight and see if the ball will continue to roll.

Correct.  That being said Lowe, Hudson, Jurrjens , and Hanson could keep them in the race.  Does not measure up to Philly's staff, but solid.

I grew up in ATL and have never seen a Braves crowd like that when Heyward went yard.  It was nice to see someone pump life into this program.

If healthy....good shot.  However, too many of the guys that they will be relying heavily on are up there in age (Professional sports wise) and a lot more injury prone.  Chipper, Hudson, Wagner etc.  All these guys have been missing significant playing time in recent years.

I don't like the Dempster matchup though.  Stats may show different but it seems every time I watch, he eats the Bravos lunch.

Escobar is finally starting to hit and Prado/Heyward at 1/2 are producing like a mofo.  Not sure how much longer Glaus is going to stay healthy, but Hinske has done a decent job so far this season.

Bravos 12-4 in the last 16 games and is currently up 7-1 over the Pirates going into the 7th.  Martin Prado has another 3 hit night for the 3rd time in the last 4 games.  Braves bats are alive right now and everything seems to be going their way.  Pitching also looking solid.  Lowe has worked 6 so far giving up 3 hits and 1 run.

McCann has sat for the last two nights and backup catcher Ross has 3 doubles and 5 RBIs in those games.  Ross is proving himself to be more than serviceable and it will go a long way towards the end of the season with McCann getting adequate rest.

Braves sweep the Pirates.  5 in a row, 15 of the last 19.  The combination of Prado and Heyward in the top 2 spots over the last 10 days have been unbelievable.  29 hits, 17 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

Phillies roll into town for a 3 game series starting tomorrow with a .5 game lead over the Braves.  Braves will have a tough time with Hamels, but they get Kendrick and Blanton in the other two.  Hopefully they can get 2 out of 3 before the long road trip.

We've got election crap going on.  I've purchased some tickets for the Detroit series coming up at the end of this month.

Braves take game 2 from the Phillies 7-3.  Troy Glaus put another one out driving in 3 for the Braves.  He's absolutely killing it right now.  Yunel Escobar finally starting to come around also.

Braves can sweep tomorrow with Lowe going up against Kendrick.

The rain screwed us on the pitching match-up.

Not Hudson's best stuff, but he battled to get to 6-1.  The rain delay was probably to blame.  Would love to see him get an All-Star selection.

The key is at least splitting the series with the Dodgers.  They are also playing great ball right now, so going 2-2 against them on the road will be a huge success.

I consider 8 IP and 1 ER a damn good start. He seemed to have pretty good control all day today.

Going back and looking at the box score, only giving up 6 hits in 8 innings is a very good start.  Maybe him being in trouble in two innings distorted my view of the game.  I thought for sure he was going to get touched up with the bases loaded and one out in the 3rd.  Aside from the 3rd and 8th innings, it was a damn good start.  So, I stand corrected.

The sweep against the Phillies was a great way to end the homestand.

Yes it was.  Only wish Troy had hit that ball just a touch harder.

Best part about it?  You can booze past the alcohol cut off time.  It comes in especially handy for extra innings games.

I refuse to make any comments about the Braves as it appears that by doing just that, it helps the team.  It's tough, but I will prevail.

Bye bye, Yunee.  You had such promise but you blew it with your poor attitude and terrible first half this year.  This was a good pickup for the Braves.  As stated in another thread, we needed to include some minor league prospects to get a big bat in the lineup, and that's exactly what Wren did.  However, I'm not so sure about trading 5 players...although I haven't been sure about Wren's moves before and he's proved me wrong.

Quote

Braves get Gonzalez; Escobar to Jays

The second half hasn't begun yet, but the Atlanta Braves made a trade Wednesday to try to stay atop their NL East perch.

The Braves acquired shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who has 17 home runs at the All-Star break, on Wednesday in a five-player trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Gonzalez

Atlanta sent shortstop Yunel Escobar and left-handed pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes to Toronto and received Gonzalez and two minor leaguers (shortstop Tyler Pastornicky and pitcher Tim Collins).

"This trade improves our club for the second half of the season," Braves general manager Frank Wren said in a statement. "We have been looking at ways to strengthen our club offensively and Alex Gonzalez is a proven veteran player who gives us added power. He is a winner and a solid offensive presence in the lineup as well as a quality defensive shortstop."

The Braves currently hold a four-game lead over the second-place New York Mets. The two-time defending NL champion Philadelphia Phillies are in third place, 4½ games behind Atlanta.

Gonzalez, 33, is batting .259 and had 50 RBIs for the Blue Jays. His 43 extra-base hits at the break were tied for fifth-most in the American League.

In 12 major league seasons, Gonzalez has 131 home runs. He is a career .248 hitter.

The 27-year-old Escobar is a career .291 hitter but is struggling this season with a .238 average. Last season, he hit .299 in 141 games, achieving career bests in home runs (14) and RBIs (76).

Reyes, 25, appeared in just one game for the Braves this season. In 41 career appearances (37 starts) he is 5-15 with a 6.40 ERA.

Pastornicky, 20, has a .258 average, six home runs and 35 RBIs for the Jays' Class-A Dunedin club this season. Collins, also 20, has a 2.51 ERA in 35 appearances for Toronto's Double-A team in New Hampshire.

I don't know much about Gonzales, but Yunel had been pissing me off for a few weeks now.  His shitty attitude and almost causing Glaus to break his wrist in NY sold the deal for me.

I was thinking of possible moves and SS was #1 on the list.  Pumped about the second half.

As am I.  Gonzalez already has more homeruns this year than Yunel's career best.  I can only think of two areas where Yunel may be better:  defense, and batting average.

I agree with you that it was a great trade. Escobar's toxic attitude was killing the clubhouse and dugout. Check out this scathing article from Mark Bradley:
Quote
Yunel Escobar was slow to learn to be a professional. How many times do you have to be told to hustle before it’s clear you just don’t care to do it?

No one can suggest the Braves didn’t give him a fair chance. He played 446 big-league game for this club, and his excesses worsened over time. And it’s one thing to hang on to a problem if the problem is hitting and driving in runs, but at age 27 Escobar had ceased to manage that.

Even with the Braves in first place, this was the right move at the right time. We shouldn’t worry about the absence of Escobar roiling the waters. He was always the guy most apt to upset the others with his disregard for the game and its conventions. He was always the Brave the others could count on to carry himself least like a Brave.

A tiny example: On a Sunday afternoon earlier this season, Escobar drove a ball in the gap in left-center. His hit brought home the go-ahead run, but somehow he managed to get thrown out at second base on a ball so perfectly placed that it would have been a double for anybody else in the big leagues. (Put it this way: Sid Bream would have made it.)

Escobar got thrown out because he watched the flight of the ball and admired his work, as opposed to running hard. The Braves noticed. The Braves always noticed. As one man in the clubhouse said afterward, exasperation in his voice: “He has been told time and time again.”

This is a happier clubhouse than it has been in years, and not just because the team is in first place. Because these guys like and respect one another. The one guy who didn’t fit — and who was never going to fit, no matter how many chances the Braves offered — just got traded. “In the short term, this really improves our ballclub,” Wren said, and it improves it not because Gonzalez is a greater talent but because he’s a real pro.

Addition by subtraction, I believe it’s called.

Yeah, I realized my mistake when I listened to 680 AM last night on the way home.  Sounds even better now.  Jo-Jo failed to impress me at any point in his career with the Braves.

Damn good move, but where do we put Omar?  The guy has to play.

The only thing I can come up with is rotating out with Chipper, and rotating out left and center fields.  It's tought to take Chipper out as he's a veteran and leads the team, but he will need breaks weekly.  The other times Omar will need to be in the outfield.  Heyward should be back tonight for the start of the second half and will lock down right field once again.

I love Bobby, maybe not as much as the Asian persuasion, but WHAT THE FUCK is he thinking playing McLouth?  This motherfucker is 1-15 since being activated from the DL.  Worse?  0-7 with runners in scoring position.....including grounding into 3 inning ending double plays with the motherfucking bases motherfucking loaded.  FUCK ME!!!!

Send the asshole back to Gwinett and give me Blanco back.  Melky can play center.  Diaz can play center.  Omar can play center.  Why in the fuck do I have to look at McEasyout 4 times a game?  Are we trying to get back to .500 ball?

Last night was on the infield.
Title: Re: Da Braves
Post by: Token on August 07, 2010, 10:19:09 AM
Last night was on the infield.

No way.  He plunked the first guy and put the tying run on with no out.  By doing that, he put the defense in a position where they made two bad plays.  If he doesn't give a free pass to the first batter, Gonzalez doesn't made an error (on a ball that would have been a tough out at first anyway) trying to keep the runner out of scoring position.  He then leaves one up in the strike zone to Uribe (who damn near hit it out of the park) which moves the hit batter to 3rd.  That put Chipper in a position to have to make a throw home instead of 1st on a ball that also would have been a tough out at first.

Bottom line.....Wagner doesn't put yet another batter on first with no outs, that whole inning plays out differently.  Gonzalez and Chipper both got an error, but only because they were put in a position where they would have had to make an incredible play to save the inning.  You can blame it on the infield.  I'll put it on Wagner, who picked up another blown save.

With the way this team plays, with the cheap shithead we have for an owner, with the absolute dearth of any prospects in the farm system, I will be dead and gone before any possible opportunity arises for the BKG to bite me in the ass.

Not to mention that THIS season, every time I use the happy nanner dance, they win.

I honestly don't get how the Bravos can sux it up like they did last night or better yet, have games where they just don't hit that much.  To me, this is the best line up they've had in foevah, from top to bottom. They should have double digit hits every night with the exception of the occasional great pitching performance.

Last night wasn't about hitting.  It was about T-Ball defense.

3 more errors tonight.  Luckily, Brooks came in late and hit a 2 run homer in the 9th to take the lead.  Then, Billy Wagner shut down the Astros.  He must have heard me bitching, because he's been bringing it since I cursed him for 25 minutes the other night.  99mph FB to a 83MPH curve is nasty.  BUT, if we can't get the defense figured out, it won't matter if he can throw 125mph.

I respectfully decline to agree.  His other foot was already on the bag when the first leg came up and off.  Not to mention that the ump had ALREADY signaled an out before that happened - the ump really rushed the call and blew it.  Trust me - it got dissected ad infinitum on the Astros broadcast.

Thanks for supporting my point, Taylor.  Road game or not, you guys are first in the division - you should have whipped the Suckasstros like a mangy yard dog.  Instead, you lose by 6 one night, and then have to struggle like crazy the next night to finally beat a team in the ninth inning that you should have swept easily.

If the Braves are having trouble with the Suckasstros, then the post season does not look too promising...

And FUCK YOU for talking bad about Baggy.  The hitting is certainly not any worse since he got back in uniform, and if anything it's better.  Bags is DA MAN.

Luckily, the Astros remembered how bad they are in the top of the 10th and just gave up 6 runs, included a pinch hit grand slam by McCann.  Hopefully, Saito won't pitch as dreadfully as Wagner did in the 9th.

But we both know if Carlos Lee went to the Braves, he'd hit .472 with 75 HR and 257 RBI the rest of way, since you've been pissing off the BKGs.

Yes, and yes.

I like Derrick Lee. He was a decent player and I think a change of scenery would do well for him. I think he could help the Braves.

Matter of fact, if the Braves get Lee, we may not lose another game!

I don't give a fuck if he hit for the cycle every game.  He and his salary would be gone.

I googled it - there were legitimate rumors (MLB.com, etc.) that Carlos Lee might be considered, but the news articles are now indeed saying Derek Lee.

Dammit.  If the BKG were gonna fuck with me, then getting my hopes up and dashing them cruelly would certainly count.

I wouldn't worry about the BKG, any of you.  They've got a permanent locker in the home team locker room at Busch Stadium.  Going to be our 4th straight loss today, and the Giants are coming to town this weekend.  Today's loss might be the final nail in the Cards season.

So we picked up Derrick Lee for a couple of minor league pitchers.  Not too bad of a deal there.  However, I don't like moving Glaus to 3rd.  I like the Conrad/Prado combo at 3rd.  Any thoughts?

I am of the same thought, but what do we do with Glaus? Bench player? Utility? I think hes too decent of a player to not be in the lineup regularly.

Let him split time with Lee at 1st, and help keep them both fresh going into the post season.

Glaus has been placed on the 15 day DL and will move to Gwinett upon returning.  Braves organization along with Cox and Glaus think it's a good idea for him to rest his knees for two weeks and then move down Gwinett to start taking balls at 3rd base.

Getting him rested up will be huge come late September.

Glaus' weak arm at 3rd was why the Cards didn't resign him.  He had shoulder surgery in 2008, and in 2009, couldn't make the throws from 3rd to 1st.  He's a good guy, and I hope he can get arm strength back.

And cubbies?  Fuck off.  Why couldn't you make this trade before Derrick Lee beat ass on the redbirds.  Fuckers.

Apparently D. Lee is strongest during the last couple months of the season.  All stats point to him being a strong finisher.  I'm iffy about Glaus going to 3rd...see Jarhead's comments.  I'd like to see a healthy rotation of Glaus, Lee, and Conrad for each infield position, with Prado and Infante becoming your everyday players at 2nd and 3rd.  This could really work in the Braves favor...but not before I sacrifice 7 virgins at the feet of the BKG

You play Lee daily as with Fred McGriff and spot play Glaus in matchups v. LH pitching as the situation calls for. I like the Conrad-Prado combo too. I'm just proud that the Braves were on top of this one for a stretch run. The Phillies aren't going away. If you have Chipper in the lineup with Lee the dynamic changes in how teams have to pitch against you. It's still a tough line-up and just a shame we won't get to see it as it was intended. So we see Glaus' reduced PT as a position player was already in the works.

What the F'n F is up with the Braves?  Holy schnikies.. The Butt-Pirates knock them out of first place?  They've scored a grand total of 1 run in 2 games against the Pirates.  This has been a long, slow and steady slide since the All-Star break.  What looked like a safe lead for at least a wildcard spot is now down to about a 2 game lead, if that, over San Fran.

Hey Bobby, it's your last year, the last few weeks...do some of that managing shit or you're going to go out on a real sour note.

Chief Jay Strongbow makes his way to the squared circle to do battle with Assassin #2 in the New Brockton Armory.  It was a non-title match that took an unforseen turn for the worst when Assassin #2 pulled a foreign object from his boot and lacerated Strongbow's forehead.  It looked as though Strongbow might recover to pull out the win, until the referee was briefley knocked unconscious by an inadvertant elbow and Assassin #1 took advantage of the opportunity to throw his partner a heavy metal garbage can stored under the ring.  #2 cracked Strongbow across the head and discarded the trash can just in time for the ref to regain consciousness and count Strongbow out.

Strongbow has vowed revenge and I wouldn't want to be either of the Assassins when next they meet.

Besides, we got the Nationals coming up. The fucking NATIONALS. They SUCK. Their best player is out for the year and they just drafted an over rated 18 year old bust. They are horrible and there is no way they stay on the same field as us. Besides, we have Hudson pitching tomorrow night and there is NO WAY that he loses. I feel a no hitter coming!!!

Also, the Giants have Chicago coming up and they are the worst. Their franchise sucks and so do their fans. I mean, 1907? Really? And you expect to beat the Giants? No fucking way.

Naturally, I will be at Turner Field for the pre-game ceremonies for Bobby Cox appreciation night this Saturday before the 4:00 PM first pitch.  Should be a hell of a show and an emotional weekend for the best manager in the bigs.

This team drives me nuts.  They picked a poor time to cool off, but things are heating up again vs. the Marlins.  They still have missed too many opportunities to put runners across the plate when men are on 2nd and 3rd.  They are not yet back to Championship Caliber, and must get there soon.

Beachey?  When you're playing the best team in the NL to make it into the playoffs?  Beachey?

The reality is this team looks like they're on life support.  They went from mid-season and having what looked like one of the most potent line ups in the majors (With the way they were playing at the time) to a team desperate to scratch out a run any way possible.  They were losing series to the likes of Washington and Pittsburgh and the Phillies just pwned the Braves.

When O. Infante played that grounder like a 3rd grader yesterday, I just knew it was over.  Then Wagner gets rocked by two guys.  I hope the euphoria of making the playoffs gives this team a positive tude' heading out to the land of teh gays.

With Prado out, the Braves are done. It was just nice to get back to the playoffs for Bobby his last year. I am satisfied to be honest. I didn't expect the World Series this year.

Agreed.  Making the playoffs was all I was hoping for the longer the second half of the season wore on.  I'm in no way speculating anything about Alex Gonzales, but when they signed him, I was stoked.  Big stick from SS and all around quality player.  The down turn started right there and lasted the rest of the season.  Not blaming him, it was just that an acquisition I thought would put them over the top turned out to be the the beginning of piss poor baseball.

No shit.  I'm usually the last to give up hope on the season, but I'm fucking done.  I didn't expect them to get past the Phillies IF they beat the Giants, but fuck.  They can't score a Got Damn run.  Hanson hasn't pitched a bad game.  Lowe pitched a great game last night.  The Braves offense have fucking SUCKED since the first of September.  And why the fuck is Melky and Diaz playing over Hinske?  Doesn't matter now, cause I'm fucking finished.

Even if they get to the WS, I refuse to fucking watch.

Oh hell no.  Can't hurt at all and this guy has been legit for years.  He's one of those guys that every time I see him play I wish the Bravos would get him.  They've had no real pop in the lineup for years.  I guarantee that if they can get McCann in the middle of some real sticks for protection, he'll hit 30+ with his swing.  Just think if Heyward kicks it in and you see him and Uggla and McCann and maybe Chipper, if he comes back strong.  Put Prado right ahead of them and I may get wood.

Kimbrel was money last night.  Great job there, kiddo.

How anemic can one team with this much talent be?  Like many said above..."With this line up?"  As far as the regulars go, Freeman had a solid year at .282 but he was up around .300 a month ago and tailed off badly.  I'll give Chipper credit for a productive season at .275 which is not bad for someone 57 years old.

McCann went from a solid .300+ hitter, carrying the Braves at times, all the way down to .270 after his injury.  He did squat after that.  Nada.

I think most people expected Prado to bust loose after last year.  Nope...260.

Your starting SS, who has always been a decent hitter for average and who normally hits 20+ homers.....241

Hey Jason....uumm...you might try NOT setting up your stance in the on deck circle.  I know you're 7 feet tall but at .227 that shit ain't workin'.  Kapeesh?

Can we finally Brooks Conrad to hit the fucking bricks?  Please?  Did he get a hit this year?

After saying all that...is Terry Pendleton still the hitting coach?  Might be the first place to look.

A team BA of .280 is frickin' stout.  Congrats man.  Ass rape the Phillies and take it all.

A couple of the "Unwritten rules" issues came up yesterday.  First, even though they did jump out to a 7 run lead, I don't think the Yankme's tried real hard to do Boston any favors.  Was I wrong in hearing they threw 11 pitchers against Tampa?  The Phillies did the right thing in bringing the heat against the Braves.  They could have easily rested the starters for the playoffs but that would be a slap in the face to the Cards.

Second, Jose Reyes gets a bunt single and takes himself out?  All about stats there Jose?  Braun took the high road in his comments but you know what he really felt. John Kruk said it for him.
Title: Re: Da Braves

I think with Philly, they had a direct impact on who they played.  If the Cards get in, they play the Cards.  If the Braves get in, they play Arizona.  Maybe they felt the match up with the Cards is more favorable than the one with the DBacks, so they thought it was a must win.

With the Yankees, who ever gets the wild card, they play Detroit.  I don't have a problem with them not throwing Rivera in the 9th.

And I totally agree about Reyes.

Last night was about an exciting night in baseball as I can remember.  Flipping between channels once the pitch hit the mitt, so I could see the pitch in the other game.  Drove my wife nuts.

She should have been playing with your nuttz while you flipped channels.  Didn't I hear where the Cards were one of only 2 teams that had a winning record against the Phillies this year?  I'd like my chances going in while you guys have momentum and hitting .280 down the stretch.
